  • Blake Edwards' film is best remembered as “Mary Poppins Gets Naked” but Julie Andrews’ toplessness aside, this 1981 satire is one of the most scathing critiques of Hollywood in movie history and features a fearless band of actors who know where all the bodies were buried. Among those classic stars who threw caution to the wind were Robert Preston, Robert Vaughn, and William Holden.

Here's how insane S.O.B. was: I read in a biography of Blake Edwards that he found out the studio was going to pull its support and dump it in theaters, so Edwards tried to buy the movie himself--which is the plot of S.O.B.!
Not only was Robert Vaughn's David Blackman meant to be Robert Evans, but Marisa Berenson played his actress lover sleeping with "Sam Marshall," the same initials as Steve McQueen (Evans' wife Ali McGraw ran off with Steve McQueen after they did Sam Peckinpah's The Getaway).
The final scenes were based on the "Bundy Drive Boys" (Errol Flynn, WC Fields, and others) stealing the body of John Barrymore in 1942 for one last party with the acting great.
I've read that they used Blake Edwards and Julie Andrews' actual Malibu house for the Farmer residence, and Blake's daughter Jennifer plays Lila, one of the hitchhikers (the other is a young Rosanna Arquette).

And the nod of Richard Mulligan/Blake Edwards' "These hands are lethal weapons!"
Edwards was a student of Bruce Lee, during his Hollywood years, hence the Kato and Green Hornet jokes in the Pink Panther movies.

    I unabashedly LOVE this movie!!
My favorite Blake Edwards picture - easily!
Satire has to be vicious , but good satire has to have heart and S.O.B. has it in spades!
Preston, Weber, Mulligan, and Holden made for an easy, perfectly rounded group of heroes.
    "Cully.. We're out of vodka"
"Jesus, Irving I just opened a fifth!"
"Well its only fair I open the next one."
And, of course, "So long pal"
That one hits close to home . Still. All these years later.
LOVE this movie and glad to see there's at least 2 of us Michael!

This was William Holden's last movie. (He succumbed to alcoholism later that year.)
I've heard there's a funny guru in it (Larry Storch).
In the brilliantly catty mystery-comedy THE LAST OF SHEILA Dyan Cannon also played a character with similarities to Sue Mengers!
When Blake Edwards later took his name off the CITY HEAT script, he replaced it with "Sam O. Brown." (Notice the initials.)

Oh, I love this movie so much. That cast! Mulligan, finally getting a well-deserved showcase after Little Big Man. Preston! And it's a hoot to see Robert Webber get all madcap! And so much more... How cool it circled your orbit there, Ms. Winters.

TEACHERS has an in-joke: Mulligan played a lunatic history teacher who illustrated a lesson by dressing up as George Custer, the role he'd played in LITTLE BIG MAN!

I believe this was the last straight comedy that Larry Hagman appeared in (Dallas was ALREADY an international hit by the time this was released). He's hilarious in it too!

S.O.B. was Blake Edwards giving the satire middle finger to Hollywood Studio Executives 😂 ( it would never get distributed by a Studio today, but maybe a Streamer )

Although I'd put this movie alongside Albert Brooks' "The Muse" and Danny Aiello's "The Pickle" in the category of:
Whenever there's a satire about Hollywood, why is the movie-within-a-movie the characters are making always so danged WEIRD?? 🤨

Opinion, maybe, but Richard Mulligan is a better dead guy in this film than Terry Kiser was in "Weekend at Bernie's."
