Like glass, the bearing was too hard to bend, thus it fractured. This why the hardest metal isn't always the best metal when designing armor. A thick layer of resin backs ceramic trauma plates to reduce this effect. This provided a great visual aid to illustrated this principle. Great video!

Being so hard also makes them brittle, that's how the first one broke. Most armor is soft enough to bend without breaking but hard enough to resist impacts

The split was epic and the rest were crazy as well,i expected the AP cores to somewhat stick and break into the bearing, but i guess even the SLAP would have ricochet off this one due to the curved surface.
The Finnish Hydraulic Press couple blew some ball bearings before with high pressure press and those metal shrapnels were flying with high velocity everywhere. @@TheTeehee11111 your correct in that the remaining energy is disbursed in the fragments but that's how the round was designed. Most frangible ammo is designed for stopping power and not penetration, the fragmentation of the projectile is how it's done. That being said that's the reason why the first bearing split the way it did, the shock from the energy of the bullet found a weak point and split the thing in twain as opposed to the other ammo that was more penetration than stopping power and tossing the bearing off the stand.

@@7150285Pure tungsten is much softer and can still be machined, but tungsten carbide is extremely hard and brittle.
Pure tungsten is soft enough to not shatter on impact and still has high density like lead. Combine that with being harder than most armor(armor deform first), it's extreme melting point(stays solid while the armor melts at the point of impact) and its self sharpening properties, it's just about the perfect material for bullets. The only thing that might be better is depleted uranium because it heats up on impact and ignites on contact with the air after passing through the armor

Amazing how the finish on the steel inside the ball looks more like broken tempered glass, once you smashed the side off with the Raufoss!
