"I only want to kill you or be killed by you." The respect for the both masters but the sarcasm is still there. Beast is just a legit battle maniac. Such a badass character.
Three reasons why the protagonist hits the beast. 1, The protagonist was always pretend to be a bad guy because he was shamed on himself when he failed to be a good man. 2, 1:34 Real meaning from landlady is "If someone have to sacrifice himself for the justice, I would rather be that one" (The original translation in subtitle is not accurate. ). After hearing this, the protagonist's righteous mind has been ignited. 3, He saw the beast surprisingly attack landlord/landlady after surrender, which is pretty shameless behavior. As a consequence, he tried to help the landlady/landloard by hitting the beast. Even he knew very well it is useless, but he is showing his attitude that he is be on the righteous side.
That is definitely funny, but it also carries a deeper meaning to the action .... It means he would hit him again, just because he fought disgracefully (since he cheats in the end, says he gave up but then does a sneak attack)... While his question was exactly "why did you hit me" he doesn't even realise!
just to add a note for those not with a Chinese culture background. "lion roar" is informally referred to the yelling from a wife like a lion, when she is mad, angry, or want to bully the husband. It matches the female master role in the movie perfectly.
This movie is probably the closest we could ever get to a live adaptation of anime. It has the PERFECT mix of anime comedy, physics mixed with real life.
Although the Lion's Roar definitely steals all the attention, the moment at 4:15 is such a clever touch. Knowing that the wife is not as flexible as the husband, he immediately help her. Nice save, great writing by the writer.
Rewatch the end, after the hero sets down the frog dude, and he comes back with the same poison dart, he disarms the dart and sends it flying away, and the fight ends with the frog man dropping to his knees and sobbing Right before he does, we see the hero from frog man's point of view. Shadowed out and black from the sunset, but the symbology is that the hero has advanced so far that the villain _can't even see him anymore!_ The same dude whose senses were so attuned that he could detect the presence of the "Fabled Lovers" in a crowded room, an entire room away, but now he can't even clearly see this one person right in front of him, *that* is the level of skill the hero is operating on.
3:42 is my favorite part of the scene. The way he says "the lions roar" out of excitement and then laughs maniacally while jumping to the landlady. Just shows you he's been itching for that good fight and has a lust for battle.
I love the fact that both sides "win" this fight in their own way, neither one by actually being more individually powerful or just "stronger". (even if the beast is the strongest single character in the scene) The Couple win by working together, using their best skills to counter the beast long enough to do damage to him. The Beast wins by feigning surrender and pulling a hidden trick. Goods win through cooperation while evil wins with trickery, neither one is shown to be truly stronger than the other in this scene, its what I love about it.

These two people hide their real personality till the end, they are very emotional and understanding but in society they behave as if they constantly fight, they lost their only son in fight tournament and hide their pain by behaving like jerks in public, they finally take care of the main character and helps him become ACE WARRIOR
The Beast is easily in my top 10 bad guys of all time. Something so cool about the idea of a balding, middle-aged guy in flip-flops being a bored martial arts genius who kills people for fun.
I like the moral of this story : 1. The Gang attack Pig Sty Alley because Steven and his fat friends started it 2. The 3 men in disguise, The Coolie, The Chef, and the Tailor step in to help the denizen from being killed by the Gang 3. The Gang wants revenge and hired Assassin's, the Harpist to killed the 3 kung fu master. 4. The Land Lord who vow to never fights and lived in peace, forced to step in to help fight the Harpist, but they were too late to save the Coolie, the Chef, and the Tailor, they all died from fighting the Harpist. 5. The Gang still want revenge, freed the Beast from Mental Asylum Prison to kill the Landlords. 6. Steven then step in and clean his own mistake by starting this war, protect Pig Sty Alley, Defeat the Beast, and make peace with him. There's so much to learn : 1. Revenge will only breed chain of hatred - Destruction - Vengeance. In the end innocent people died. 2. It takes only a small pebble to create an avalanche, just because Steven stupidity, he created a war ... 3. Oil and Water will never mix, the good and the bad people can't coexist. 4. Money, Booze, Women, Power, all of this doesn't matter when you are close to death. See when Steven almost died from the beast Attack he draw a candy.... all he wants is to protect and to be with the girl he loves, his dream to be on the bad side because he thinks bad people always winning .... deep down he knows he never truly wants to be bad. 5. You have to clean your own mistake, Steven start this war, he finish it, he ends it. 6. Great Power comes with Great Responsibility.
One thing I love from this movie is that the MC usually wears grey from the beginning. Changes to black when he joined the axe gang. Shifts to white for his redemption arc.
The translation says "Paris and Helen of Troy", the famous couple from the greek epic of Trojan War But what they actually says was "Yang Guo and Xiaoliongnu" which is the famous couple from Chinese martial arts novel "Return of the condor heroes", the 2nd novel from the condor trilogy by Lois Cha The differences is that their special moves which is the Taiji and the Lion's roar are attributed to another characters, Lion's roar is the signature move of Xie Xun the golden lion from Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre novel which is the 3rd part of the Condor trilogy, and the Taiji is the move from Zhangsanfeng the founder of wudang in the same novel And what's ironic os that the killer beast's signature technique which is the toad skill is actually the signature move of Ouyang feng who is Yang guo's godfather
I have rewatched this movie for a lot of times but just recently realized that when the landlord lady said: 自古正邪不两立,我不入地狱 谁入地狱 (Righteous and evil has never aligned, somebody has gotta do the job to save the world), the word has sparked the protag to be with justice
It bears reminding that "Helen of Troy" fights while also smoking. The first time you meet her, she's doing her hair and collecting rent. The second time you meet her, she's trying to wind down for bed. She NEVER wants to be inconvenienced for things like gang violence. She's basically trying to enjoy her early retirement. Helen and Paris are just two lovers trying to live their lives peacefully. They are also metaphors for the trials of marriage: the man must be ready to compromise and support his woman, the woman must remain strong for the man. Their Kung Fu styles also mirror this: he's flexible and can divert force with his body, she uses her grounded and explosive force to blow problems away. Woman's fury supported by a man's flexibility creates a strong team with few weak spots. So when they fight, they are also very well coordinated--like in marriage. Neither is stronger than the other. You notice how Paris never gets angry when she hits him. He just laughs it off and continues to defend her.
Actually the translation took a liberty for the fictional characters' names here. In the original Cantonese, the landlord and landlady's monikers are Yang Guo and Xiaolongnü, two characters from the novel Condor Heroes by Jin Yong. They are teacher-and-student-turned-lovers (Xiaolongnü, literally meaning dragon maiden, is several years older than Yang Guo and also his teacher/mentor) and the novel depicts how their innocent love and affection for each other grows and how they overcome the prejudices and hurdles to come together at the end, even after a 16-year separation during which Yang Guo thought that Xiaolongnü was already dead. The monikers were also an irony, as Xiaolongnü is described as an ethereal, fairy-like figure and Yang Guo as strikingly handsome, which both the landlord and landlady apparently are not.
This movie proved.. if you have strong characters you like.. they can be any age, sex, whatever.. even the Taylor guy was a femboy/gay..and he was still capable etc.. it really is a don’t judge a book bye its cover kinda story. Plus all the actors are actually good.. and not toxic that sa plus. She was awesome.. and the choice to always have the cig hanging on her lip is so funny.
That part where they delay the Beast enough to set up the bell reminded me of when Vegeta got beaten up holding off Buu so Goku can use the Spirit Bomb lol
I know it's translated as Paris and Helen of Troy, but the actual Chinese name of the characters were Yang'Guo (杨过) and Xiao Long'Nu (小龙女), who were a famous fictional wuxia power couple from one of Gum Yoong's novels, 神雕侠侣, which translates to "The Condor Heroic Couple", with the two characters being the titular Heroic Couple.
The Beast stopped fighting too. He let himself get arrested and put in jail because there was no more challenges. I wonder what he was like in his prime. He would Neo a run for his money
1:51 That 'Shit hit the ceiling bruv' moment! The whole crew shittin pants and silently stepping back once they realized that those 3 Masters are gonna turn the club in to a graveyard now.
Few said shaolin soccer is his best work. But many agree that Kungfu Hustle is. The creativity, comedy, action, suspense and symbolistic in this movie is top tier. He even put a lot of great touch that we unaware of. Hong Kong doesn't lose a legend, the world does.
One thing is that the background music would always take me to places i cant even imagine even when o watched this move the as a child the bgm still was very nostalgic for me . This movie will always have a special place in my heart for china ✨
I am a Taiwanese, let me explain what is the meaning of sending that 'horn'. The horn is the bell in a traditional temple. The word "bell" is the same as the Chinese word "The End". To send a person a bell (that is, the horn, or the clock) means to ask him to die. Stephen's film has a lot of "localized" dialogues and details, especially filled with a lot of Hong Kong Cantonese, if you can't understand the meaning, you will often lose many interesting points.
This is one of the only few movies that can have the goofiest fight special effects yet can still be 100% taken seriously and it's still epic.

A timeless classic. In a hundred years, this'll still be a great movie
In Chinese, sending a bell as a gift means condolence to the receiver.Because the pronunciation of "sending a bell"送钟 is the same as "condolence"送终🤣
Yea, a smart translation though. It would be lame to add a footnote otherwise.
At least romanize it my guy ...not all of us can speak mandarin
@@luxeternity Sorry man,we don't study Roman alphabets now so I cannot make it romanized:( but i can give a pinyin version (sòng zhōng).Hope it helpful.
in extension, giving clocks (especially the striking hour-types) as gifts were frowned upon in the past
not sure if it's still the same in the modern age
7:53 my fav scene. His disappointment 😂😂😂
“Why did you hit me?” *THOINK* Classic lmaooo
Everything about this movie is just spectacular. In this scene, the first time you watch you're like, what the heck is going on with that bell? Then when she cracks the top off and he holds it up like a megaphone is one of the best cinematic moments ever!
the cgi aged pretty well, even by today standard, i think this is some really good cgi.
All things considered, this was pretty good at its time, albeit not without flaws
😂 Better than she hulk
Definitely. I say it's on par, hell some scenes are better than some Marvel movies/shows.
adding the comedy nature of the film. it fits really well
The movie helps because it doesn't take itself seriously & everything is exaggerated, which makes it a fun movie.
8:42 🤣😂😂 why did you heat me ?
Tik ... 😂😂😂
Nothing like the lions roar. What a classic.
I love the music at 5:30, this movie has a bunch of moments like these and it's just amazing, it's like "oh yeah, get ready to get rekt"
This is my favorite movie of all time. It is truly a masterpiece. The Kung Fu was great and over the top. Some scenes also had me cracking up
Possibly my favorite movie of all time. I can watch it over and over and never get bored. It's such a fun movie to watch.
One of the best scenes in any movie, ever!
1. The green crocodile shoes.
2. The lion's roar with the bell.
3. Music when The Beast starts fighting Paris.
4. The massive punch from the giant fist.
5. Whirlwind from amplified roar.
6. Her chest expanding and cig getting destroyed as she powers up.
7. The pre-fight chit chat.
8. The twist punch that almost sauces Paris.
9. Paris twisting Helen to dissipate the twist punch.
10. The useless tap on the Beast's face with the stick.

The Epic Roadrunner and Coyote running parody
13. The flying cards
14. Protagonist hits the mafia leader's head out of confusion
The husband and wife catching the needles simultaneously.
Nobody can make such a amazing movie ever again , beautiful work must have been a talented movie crew.
I fucking LOVE the synergy and chemistry the couple have. Without a word, knowing exactly what they’re trying to do. Like the bell. It’s, so so good 💖💖💖
😂😂😂 this movie is probably my favorite Kung Fu comedy. Had me laughing in both languages.
I could watch the husband fight all day. His style is so fluid and smooth. It’s like he’s not even trying to
I watched this for the first time at 3AM one morning. I laughed so much I started catching cramps in my abs. My wife was on the phone with her sister and was trying to figure out why I was laughing so much. I started the movie over and she laughed until she had tears in her eyes.
What a beautiful story. Thanks for sharing mate
This movie is an example of how a Dragon Ball movie should have been.
8:46
He did it! The long lost KungFu Art of…… EMOTIONAL DAMAGE!
This was a great movie, to bad a lot of people don't know about it.
I think most Chinese would’ve watch it, due to it playing over the tv screen during Chinese New Year
im indian and i used to see this movie a LOT as a child, i believe many kids my age did cuz a specific channel used to play it almost everyday lmao and i loved it, i never got tired of it
It was once highest grossing movie in China, it is quite popular, every 90's Kid has watch Kung Fu Hustle.
So true,if u ever watching TV during the traditional Chinese New Year with family,
sure u would've watched this.
Thai people love this movie
I watch some scenes in this movie from time to time. The thrill and excitement since the first time I watch this movie has not changed at all.
This movie is a masterpiece. Love from Philippines.
This film never gets old for me. Definitely one of the most pervasively entertaining films I've seen.
Pervasively and persuasively.
I love how at 1:37, when she said the cheesy Line "good and Bad can't coexist"...the hero is all focused and know his destiny
Stephen Chow is not only one of the most underrated creator but also an unrecognized ambassador of Chinese culture.
02:59 the fact that he can hold off the Beast, even if just for a few secs, is such a bad ass moment, and I don't care what anybody says!
9:15 I just laughed so hard at this part. Great way to end the video. 😂
The guy who played Paris should have gotten an award. He was so real in the film. His facial expressions did so much.
that old dude's entrance still remains one of the most badass scenes. the music fits so well
These two people hide their real personality till the end, they are very emotional and understanding but in society they behave as if they constantly fight, they lost their only son in fight tournament and hide their pain by behaving like jerks in public, they finally take care of the main character and helps him become ACE WARRIOR
Dude, who are you translating this too??
Most of us have seen this movie.

This movie is way ahead of time..... do you agree????
The Beast is easily in my top 10 bad guys of all time. Something so cool about the idea of a balding, middle-aged guy in flip-flops being a bored martial arts genius who kills people for fun.
I like the moral of this story :
1. The Gang attack Pig Sty Alley because Steven and his fat friends started it
2. The 3 men in disguise, The Coolie, The Chef, and the Tailor step in to help the denizen from being killed by the Gang
There's so much to learn :
At 2:00 THAT has to be the greatest kick and block (simultaneously) that I’ve ever seen!
This is the greatest Martial arts movie ever. Love it. Classic. Great, Great, story.
One thing I love from this movie is that the MC usually wears grey from the beginning. Changes to black when he joined the axe gang. Shifts to white for his redemption arc.
The translation says "Paris and Helen of Troy", the famous couple from the greek epic of Trojan War
But what they actually says was "Yang Guo and Xiaoliongnu" which is the famous couple from Chinese martial arts novel "Return of the condor heroes", the 2nd novel from the condor trilogy by Lois Cha
The differences is that their special moves which is the Taiji and the Lion's roar are attributed to another characters, Lion's roar is the signature move of Xie Xun the golden lion from Heaven Sword and Dragon Sabre novel which is the 3rd part of the Condor trilogy, and the Taiji is the move from Zhangsanfeng the founder of wudang in the same novel
And what's ironic os that the killer beast's signature technique which is the toad skill is actually the signature move of Ouyang feng who is Yang guo's godfather
First scene with the flower pot
Ur narrative is just beautifully simplified. Awesome.
Damn. That is profound
That amplified Lion's Roar is GOAT...oh my!
Legendary scene from a legendary movie. Brings back a lot of childhood memories 😊
Pure. Genius. A poetic love letter to the martial arts movie industry.
Definitely one of the greatest fight scene ever
A masterpiece. That's all we can tell.
I never get tired of watching this film... so epic!
I saw this movie when it first came out and here we are in 2024. This movie just never gets old.
7:05 always makes me laugh
That part where they delay the Beast enough to set up the bell reminded me of when Vegeta got beaten up holding off Buu so Goku can use the Spirit Bomb lol
Best. Kung-Fu. Movie. Ever! Prove me wrong.
You are correct check our enter The Dragon it's my second favorite
Nothing comes close
Still one of the best films ever made :p
I know it's translated as Paris and Helen of Troy, but the actual Chinese name of the characters were Yang'Guo (杨过) and Xiao Long'Nu (小龙女), who were a famous fictional wuxia power couple from one of Gum Yoong's novels, 神雕侠侣, which translates to "The Condor Heroic Couple", with the two characters being the titular Heroic Couple.
05:30 the roaring of a lion with a big bell
thats when the beast realised he messed up 😂😂
La reacción del tipo es increíble xD
It makes me wonder how powerful the couple could of been if they never stoped fighting…
The Beast stopped fighting too. He let himself get arrested and put in jail because there was no more challenges. I wonder what he was like in his prime. He would Neo a run for his money
Probably almost as strong as the beast….. whilst together
Fighting didnt pay bills
When the bad guy moves in superspeed when you're supposed to be in bullet time, you know you're in trouble.
1:51 That 'Shit hit the ceiling bruv' moment!
The whole crew shittin pants and silently stepping back once they realized that those 3 Masters are gonna turn the club in to a graveyard now.
There’s only 2 movies I can truly enjoy and read the subtitles. Kung fu hustle and city of gods. This movie is a true classic to me.
There is no better movie
Blazing Saddles...
Few said shaolin soccer is his best work. But many agree that Kungfu Hustle is. The creativity, comedy, action, suspense and symbolistic in this movie is top tier. He even put a lot of great touch that we unaware of. Hong Kong doesn't lose a legend, the world does.
I love how they agree to fight so amicably
5:30 was the moment he realized he's in big trouble😂
