Looking at this whole scene again, it just finally crossed my mind that the landlady was giving them chances to escape while distracting the assassins. Just like how they escaped the beast with just a few seconds of distraction But the 2 kungfu masters were too eager to fight. Maybe thinking they had a chance to win
This was a beautifully shot movie. The poetic way the spear master moves as he fights his way forward is brilliant, it almost looks like he was dancing and having a grand time! One of my favorite scenes in the movie and that's saying alot because the entire move is awesome!
His name is Yang Guo. Yang Guo is a character in Condor Heroes. Condor Heroes is a Chinese novel released in 1959. This film is a parody of Chinese novels
@@Yangpeiling-de-zhangfu Rio was referring to the spear master not the taichi master. and yes i do think non-Chinese are missing a deeper layer of comedy hidden in their names 杨过 and 小龙女 that makes me love this movie so much because i love 金庸 novels
There was actually some character development after this scene. As Donut was dying, he told the landlord and landlady that he never saw such a powerful technique exist like Lion Roar. The Landlady apologised for being too passive and not interfering early to save their lives because their son passed away and they preferred to lead a quiet life instead of showing off as martial artists. Donut said something like having great power meant that you could not run away from your responsibilities to protect others when innocent people were in need of your help. The three masters (coolie, donut, tailor) gave the landlords a lot of courage, despite being much weaker than them. After all, they were the first ones to stand up to the Axe Gang. Because of that, the landlords made the life-or-death decision to confront the Axe gang directly in their home territory and even faced the Beast. Their relationship also improved after that (previously, the male landlord was a huge pervert who liked to explore other ladies’ bodies).
Not anime. This movie is wuxia movie. The couple in this movie are named Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu. Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu are characters in Condor Heroes. In this movie, Xiao Long Nu can use the Lion Roaring move. Lion's Roar is Xie Xun's move. Xie Xun is a character in the novel Heavenly sword and dragon sabre released in 1961
This movie was SO refreshing to see when it came out. It's still my fave example of a perfect movie. The heroes don't look like stereotypical heroes--heck, they don't even look like they could physically handle being heroes. Not only that, but it's very hard to predict how the plot will progress. Sure, there are some things that you can assume ("ooh, evil gang is gonna get pwned by 'hero' ")--but how it's gonna get there (and who is gonna get it along the way) is VERY hard to tell. Not only that, but it's FUN and silly while also having moments of unexpected sh*t getting real. Just, absolutely perfect.
That terrific touch at the end where she does the impression of Bruce Lee in Way Of The Dragon. Flawless film. Saw it on the big screen at Leicester Square.
6:46 His moves in this part are just magnificent. He's just floating in the air like in water. He's not fighting, he's just absorbing and reflecting the energy making all the moves of the opponents useless and harmfull for themselves
The hardcore thing of this battle is that I think the blades are not supposed to be seen, it is there for the audience to know how it works but they are invisble and they are fignting blind, ironic given the blindness of the enemy as well, which makes sense since they are fighting against sound which is the musicians strongest sense. So that is the reason why you only see the swords briefly, I know some people may argue that the blades are indeed visible since Donut starts to block them with their spears, but as you can see in 4:01 it is not until the sword gets close to him that he gets to doge it, as if he's only able to detect it at close range, and the part 4:19 also makes it clear that Donut is not focusing on the sound of the music as if he needs to do that in order to know where the attacks are going, and during the entire battle Donut keeps his eyes on them and not the swords and he uses the spears to block the incoming attacks by brandishing them in all directions without looking at the swords because HE CANNOT SEE THEM, just as in 4:29 he jumps forward with his remaining spears in front of him scattered as his attempt to cover more space and block what he cannot see and in 4:35 you can see how close the cuts get to him as if he doesn't know or can see the swords, and that is why his goal is to reach the instrument cause he cannot see the attacks because the attacks are sound. 7:59 I say this part is self explanatory, they can't see the soldiers but they are just a representation of the attack, for me all they can see is the trails of dust from the attack so that is how they are able to tell an incoming attack 1:58, just look a their expressions is that of total blindness which I think is the irony of this fight. (1:52 - 2:16 - 2:46 - 3:12 - 3:57 ) 4:11 look at the Tailor in the background he is trying to see 3:38 this is the only part that tells otherwirse but as I mentioned before it seems that only at close range they are able to detect the attack but that doesn't exaclty mean they can see like we do with the swords, and as I mentioned before, Donut seems to be blocking out the music in his concentration to deflect the attacks and they might be able to see the trail of dust so is not entirely invisible.
@@chaoluncai4300 I had the same doubt if theh both were blins or just one of them, or if it was that they have good hearing and can tell where people are like some kind of Daredevil thus making it seem as if they are not blind, mahbe they are partially blind or maybe they are not at all? Is there a wiki with official information? Heh
9:23 I know what she said. She said: “One condition… never come back… if you don’t… you will face her fury that you will never forget… you got that!” After he nodded “yes”. When she place her thumb under her nose, she said: “Good!”
Actually she was saying: “👆You ☝️are not 👍my 🤜🏼🤛opponent”. Meaning: you are no match for me. The word opponent is translated in Chinese as 对手(duì shǒu). Literally it means “opposing(对) hands(手). So she used this gesture 🤜🏼🤛 to express “opponent”.
People will mostly praise the action and comedy, but the deaths here are so emotional, including the next scene where they hear the last words of the spear master.
I loved how the only source of music that comes from this battle is the music that is played by the harpist. That was until when the landlord stepped in and the music stopped and played another theme indicating that the assassins are facing strong opponents.

00:05:38 just hits different once you know the masters are just holding down because of an old promise, but keep getting pushed by the goons. They know the axe gang is just fodder for them but try to stay aside til the last moment.
A tapestry of exquisite comedy interwoven with creative action. I will forever be in love with the idea of everyday things being used as superpowers, like: - the scream of an angry woman - a musical instrument - a trade skill tool
Ah these also have a pretty deep history in Chinese folk lore. Voice stun is a myth in a lot of cultures. Also it really does work if what you need is a second or two.
I remember when this came out it was the only movie I'd seen that successfully captures the over-the-top fights and characters you see in anime. It *still* might be the best. Same goes for Shaolin Soccer. Stephen Chow is a master at mixing comic book-esque characters with wuxia style aciton.
Marvel's Shang Chi was a disappointment compared to this masterpiece. The whole fight scene was brilliantly done, choreographed so beautifully where it made you so immersed! This movie will always be a masterpiece in my book!
They're COMPLETELY different movies. Completely different genres... completely different directors, studios, actors.... Just because they're Chinese? This comment is so ignorant it's actually embarrassing
I always laugh at the landlord's "tonchi tonchi, mossi mossi"...I remember I watched this movie in the theatre by mistake but it was the best mistake of my life.
Stephen Chow did so amazing with this movie! Everything! The style, the usage of CGI, the comedy, the music, the acting. Everyone was great in the film, the lives they portrayed looked authentic. What a great movie. Its one of a few dozen i make sure to watch every year.
I was a child when I first show in, it was a black and white tv and we played this on a cd player. I couldn't read english subtitles back then. " Shaolin Soccer " and " Fung Fu Hustle " are on another level. I wish Stephen Chow never stopped making movies, all of his movies are pieces of art!
This scene is such a great blend of audio and visual arts. I find it so fascinating that they've incorporated the audio aspect of this scene within the plot and gave a visual representation of it.
Gotta low how since the lovers made an oath never to fight again the first time Landlord actually fights he is doing it so effortlessly, using the foes themselves to inflict damage on eachother. He doesn't use any special tricks like during the Beast fight, he just puts them down in the most peaceful taoist way possible
Eh, no, his special trick is exactly the deflecting of blows. Likewise, he makes no sound when touching the ground, and after they bounce him off, you can see that his motions seem more in line with a floating piece of paper, rather than a physical object. I'm not certain of the actual name, but you could describe it as 'Ragdoll technique'. It's implied earlier in the movie, when his lady hits him or he is in other ways hit by stuff that would definitely injure a normal person, but he just ignores it or pretends to be knocked out. So, it's definitely not as flashy as some other techniques seen in that movie, but it's definitely a special technique he is using. (Alongside being obviously skilled in actual Kung Fu as well.)
It's Taichi and he is a master of it. It's the technique of deflecting or redirecting the energy of the blows of the attackers against them. Obviously, Stephen took liberties to exaggerate the actual art but it's real. Stephen Chow even purposefully draws the Ying Yang symbol on the ground to drive the point home.
@@Yangpeiling-de-zhangfu Yes, i do. And i believe it's doesnt have any real meaning, just for the sake of the meme. yang guo doesnt know taichi and xiaolongnu doesnt know lion roar

Don't know if it's on purpose, but I just noticed at 5:11 how they both look in different directions when the window opens (the left one being blind and all).
I absolutely love this film, and I really don't find myself enjoying a lot these days. It's got everything all in one place, and even if you just skip the subtitles and just sit back to enjoy the ride it's great. I think I'm going to go watch this right now.

Another fact: the guy that played the landladies husband worked a lot with Bruce Lee.
I hear many kung fu learners can do that with enough practice. But to do it so steadily like those dudes did in the movie would be incredible.😢
That's some serious core strength right there
This will always be legendary. I remember watching this movie when I was a kid with my neighbors. It was fun reminiscing those days where we all get together just watching and laughing, sitting beside each other.
8:05 smokes cig in one breath thats the true power.
Looking at this whole scene again, it just finally crossed my mind that the landlady was giving them chances to escape while distracting the assassins. Just like how they escaped the beast with just a few seconds of distraction
But the 2 kungfu masters were too eager to fight. Maybe thinking they had a chance to win
not too eager , but just want the harrassment in the village to end
This is not dancing but a common action often played by warrior characters in traditional Chinese operas.
@thfchris I know that it's not actual dancing. I was referring to his graceful movements and the ease in which he does them
There was actually some character development after this scene.
This is the closest we'll have to a movie adaptation of an action comedy anime
Xie Xun is a character in the novel Heavenly sword and dragon sabre released in 1961
Yes!! If only chinese animation incorporate the movie's vibe on their works.
@@Yangpeiling-de-zhangfu now that's a trivia I didn't know, gotta look it up. thanks for the info
You need to watch “everything everywhere all at once.”
kung pow and shaolin socker
The landlord is still sleeping while beating the crap out of them 😆
His name is Yang Guo
He worked with Bruce Lee many times.
Not really. More like he skillfully relaxed.
Not really. He used Tai-Chi, which commonly practiced at a slow-to-sleep pace.
He barely touched them too. He mostly got them to beat each other
All of the characters have distinct and fun styles that I love to see more of. Those assassins were creepy and intimidating beyond belief.
3:36 idk why but his deep breathe in gets me everytime. It's the "I know how this is going go end but I'm going for it." Feel
That terrific touch at the end where she does the impression of Bruce Lee in Way Of The Dragon. Flawless film. Saw it on the big screen at Leicester Square.
19 years later and there still hasn't been a female character that comes close to being as badass as the Landlady.
Meh trinity was prtetty bad ass
was gonna say Beatrix Kiddo but Kill Bill vol 1 came out a year before kung fu hustle 😂
gaz digzy from ballmastrz is pretty badass
6:46 His moves in this part are just magnificent. He's just floating in the air like in water. He's not fighting, he's just absorbing and reflecting the energy making all the moves of the opponents useless and harmfull for themselves
The last part where they were all in the car made me laugh so much.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
if you haven't seen the continuation of the scene, it gets funnier as the boss and his underling are driving off.

5:47 I remember I got a goosebump when I saw this in the cinema for the first time.
The way they just appear in the car never fails to crack me up
The hardcore thing of this battle is that I think the blades are not supposed to be seen, it is there for the audience to know how it works but they are invisble and they are fignting blind, ironic given the blindness of the enemy as well, which makes sense since they are fighting against sound which is the musicians strongest sense.
(1:52 - 2:16 - 2:46 - 3:12 - 3:57 ) 4:11 look at the Tailor in the background he is trying to see
3:38 this is the only part that tells otherwirse but as I mentioned before it seems that only at close range they are able to detect the attack but that doesn't exaclty mean they can see like we do with the swords, and as I mentioned before, Donut seems to be blocking out the music in his concentration to deflect the attacks and they might be able to see the trail of dust so is not entirely invisible.
i love how u disect the clips fram by frame, this scene haunted me for a good couple days as a child when it first released lol
btw are they both blind? cuz how at the 1st minute fight that guy knows where donut is if he's blind
Heh
@@LuxCirilo it's confirmed that the guys fought with donuts is not blind, only the harpie player is
wow, nice analysis , and makes sense too
This is probably hands down one of the best fight scenes ever made.
This movie may have been intended as a comedy, but it was an absolute work of art.
9:23 I know what she said. She said: “One condition… never come back… if you don’t… you will face her fury that you will never forget… you got that!”
After he nodded “yes”.
@@angelhero89I guess it makes sense
This was added in tribute to Bruce Lee where he made the exact same action in one of his movies
People will mostly praise the action and comedy, but the deaths here are so emotional, including the next scene where they hear the last words of the spear master.
6:55 The CGI aged beautiful than the current MCU and Disney as a whole LOL
I loved how the only source of music that comes from this battle is the music that is played by the harpist. That was until when the landlord stepped in and the music stopped and played another theme indicating that the assassins are facing strong opponents.
I've never laughed at a movie so much in my life as I have with this one.
This one, until mystery men. That one I almost choked
It's the end that really gets me. The landlord and the landlady suddenly in the car with them, and their reaction to it.
The part where he's trying to throw knives at the landlady, and the chase afterwards, still makes me laugh no matter how many times I watch it
@@landonletterman831 this entire movie is a work of art. My wife was on the phone with her sister at 3AM and I was watching this movie, cramping and in tears from laughing. I made her watch it so she could experience my joy and pain too.

I love the incorporation of so many different feelings from classical chinese music shown by the zither players over their two appearances playing. Its like if you could combine the presence of "ambush on ten sides" the history and feeling of "the conqueror unarms" and the momentum of "King Chu doffs his armor" into a single building movement. Beautifully done by whoever composed.

This scene literally gives me chills. Few dialogue, full of suspense and intense action. I won't lie Kung Fu Hustle is the best martial arts movie I've ever seen.
So funny, and so impressive at the same time. When it comes to power, so many get caught up in the two options fear, or respect, and some want both. This couple have something else, love and respect, both laughter and amazment can be had at the same time with them.
00:05:38 just hits different once you know the masters are just holding down because of an old promise, but keep getting pushed by the goons. They know the axe gang is just fodder for them but try to stay aside til the last moment.
4:07 the spear guy deflecting the notes is essentially just beat saber
Lmao
oh the F i see what you did there xDDD
A tapestry of exquisite comedy interwoven with creative action. I will forever be in love with the idea of everyday things being used as superpowers, like:
- the scream of an angry woman
- a musical instrument
- a trade skill tool
Ah these also have a pretty deep history in Chinese folk lore.
Voice stun is a myth in a lot of cultures. Also it really does work if what you need is a second or two.
I remember when this came out it was the only movie I'd seen that successfully captures the over-the-top fights and characters you see in anime. It *still* might be the best. Same goes for Shaolin Soccer. Stephen Chow is a master at mixing comic book-esque characters with wuxia style aciton.
I LOVE the fact that the fights are essentially exposition. the story choreography tells is amazing
Marvel's Shang Chi was a disappointment compared to this masterpiece. The whole fight scene was brilliantly done, choreographed so beautifully where it made you so immersed! This movie will always be a masterpiece in my book!

I just want a prequel movie of the Landlady and Landlord.
I did not know how pronounce "Hustle" at that time so I kept calling it as "Hystyle"
One of his latest films, the mermaid one, is an absolute masterpiece as well in its own way
This movie is one of the best modern comedy action kung fu movie ever..
After many years, still find this so fascinating.... The sound quality is so good and the fight is so beautiful
@@skim2958 That is only yin part of taichi. It also has the yang part, one of the strongest blow in chinese marterial art
