also did y’all peep that Oliver’s rock didn’t land in the water because his dad wasn’t actually dead😭?? and also when the butler had trouble closing the curtain it basically foreshadowed the family’s fates😭 the mom gagging, the daughter spilling wine and the father having a mental breakdown I loved THATTT

I don’t think he murdered Sir James- he took the money offered to him and was living a comfortable wealthy life until he saw that James had died. He saw a new opportunity and swooped in on Elsbeth for one final conquest.

I agree. The more I thought about it that made the most sense.

Imo he orchestrated what appeared to be an accident since he wasn’t very lucky, but he knew how to place the pieces in a way they’d fall just right

Nevermind, I was thinking too hard. He definitely oopsed himself. He was OBSESSED with Felix, why wouldn’t he in this kind of film

i like this film a lot more than i feel like i should’ve.
i didn’t initially like the plot, but as i thought about it more, i really did.
this is how i read it:
when it comes to Oliver, people seem to forget something, he’s a liar.
Oliver is the one who narrates the story throughout, as if it were all premeditated and motivated by pure economic resentment, but I think it was all Felix.
Oliver’s original intentions were never about Saltburn, he was infatuated with Felix, obsessed, willing to do anything to avoid rejection and create a connection, when he starts to lose him, he lies to get his way back in.
what sealed Felix’s fate is when he started to see Oliver for who he really was and rejected him.
when Oliver knew there was absolutely no coming back from that ruined image and relationship, he killed Felix.
and I think he immediately regretted it.
Saltburn became the replacement for his infatuation, the obsession, the need.
and Felix’s stone is the only one Oliver touches in the end scene.
damn do I love films that get you thinking.

Oliver is a pathological liar. It’s impossible for him to tell the truth ever. Right down to lying to himself.
In the intro of the movie he says he protected Felix. 🙄 We know he murdered Felix.
Grew up with 2 pathological liars in my life and Oliver reminds me of them. Their first instinct is to lie about even the most innocuous things as they need to feel in control as their self esteem is in the basement. That form of control and manipulation is the ONLY thing that shores up their self esteem. So they have an almost primal NEED to constantly manipulate others as they can’t manage their own emotional regulation.
I wonder if runny eggs actually gives Oliver an upset stomach, or if he just wanted to see what would happen.
I found it fascinating when Oliver was found out, he shrinks. That’s a manipulation too. Distract from getting caught.
His family knows he’s garbage so he has exhausted that pool of victims. Usually when a pathological liar is caught, they just lie and manipulate more, which we see is exactly what Oliver does later.
Their mental steady state is lying and manipulating others. The thing is, at the end, Oliver has run out of people to manipulate. He will have to find new puppets, or he will get unhappy very fast. Saltburn at least is great bait for new victims.
Getting Felix and then getting into Saltburn was probably the first time his manipulations were so successful and that gave him a high he couldn’t give up upon Felix finding out.
I think that’s why his confidence grows so much after he didn’t get caught in the bathtub. He totally loved Felix as much as someone with Oliver’s psychology can. But he will *always* love manipulating more.
Mind, the Catton family were manipulators too, just Oliver was better then them, with scant resources to do it too.
(Felix and his excuse for the shared bathroom is ridiculous. The house that played Saltburn has 127 rooms. There are tons of easily accessible private bathrooms. Just Oliver out manipulates Felix and Felix died for it.)

Sir James' death is not shown so I guess one can come to their own conclusion if Oliver killed him offscreen or if he just lucked out. I think Oliver was attracted more to the idea of Felix than Felix himself. He became obsessed with the idea of being him. Of being all of them. And while Oliver is villain, the Catton's aren't exactly good people either. They like to use the "poor souls" for their entertainment and discard them when they dont need them anymore. Look at the treatment of Pamela for example. So Oliver wasnt totally far off when he told Felix that everyone puts on a show. And Farleigh could see right through him which is why Oliver needed to get him out of the picture, first by framing him as a thief and then making it look like him like he (unintentionally) caused Felix's death by providing him with cocaine causing him to OD.

To me he definitely wanted Felix but since Felix was so obviously straight and comfy in it, he didn’t even bother trying to flirt lol. Relatable but I’m not violent so I’d just straight up say he’s hot, it’s not just the weather.

its implied that sir oliver has killed himself. elspeth says she’s “surprised he waited so long”

    • @lbougie
      @lbougie 5 місяців тому +1

I believe James died of natural causes, probably cancer. Oliver didn’t kill him, he’s allegedly waiting for James’ death so he can seize the moment after 15 years.

Notice how easily the family blames Farleigh? It’s because he’s half black.
Venetia even says “He’s more spoiled then we are.” That’s a common complaint against marginalized people.
Even in scenes where they are seated together, Farleigh is usually seated away from the rest of the family. Pamela sits closer with everyone then him even when she is living there.
    Oliver’s whiteness is an asset.
Oliver reminds me of a successful version of Lori Vallow, and Lori Vallow’s whiteness definitely helped her get away with earlier murders. (Lori Vallow is a real life criminal and many of her murders were financially motivated, but some murders, they literally can’t prove she did it, as she got the victims cremated.)
I appreciate your reaction to how Elspeth was murdered. It seems like Oliver wanted to sleep with her and Elspeth didn’t want to sleep with him, and he can’t risk her rejecting him. (He tried coming on to her earlier and it didn’t work, so he switched to gossip and the replacement son tactic.)
We don’t see what Oliver does to make Elspeth sick, but it’s definitely in the COVID era, as in the cafe scene people are wearing masks and Sir James obituary says it’s 2022.
COVID complications do require a medically induced coma to put in a ventilator. Whatever he did, he made it look like severe COVID I think.
At the very least Oliver can’t SA a coma victim. If the movie did that, I would have left before the end. The way he put her arms around him (manipulating a puppet) and he laid on her chest after she died, makes me shudder. He very clearly wanted to SA her but probably couldn’t for whatever reason. I appreciate someone else noticed. Sexual dominance was definitely a high he was chasing when he saw his pathological lying was finally working. I think that is what motivated his actions in the grave scene. Yeah he killed Felix and had the last word, but he never was able to sleep with him.
I think it’s true he did hate these people at times, which is why he wanted to sleep with (dominate) them.
He was really enthusiastic when one of the girls Felix dumped wanted to sleep with him. He definitely didn’t like her.
I realize why they have the coronation music at the beginning of the movie when introducing Oliver. At the end, Oliver dance starts from the King’s room which is now his room. So… they basically told us the end at the beginning with that music cue.
I love thé use of the music in this movie and I LOVE the bass music they use whenever Oliver does something evil.

Even Venetia said “talk about biting hand”, the Cattons were ungrateful to Farleigh who they love and depend on.
They are passively racists against Farleigh and the black footmen.
      They fed the poor.
He deeply loved his family and he respected them but everything is completely battered and shattered.
I’m devastatingly sorry for Farleigh and the footmen.
Oliver was born as a new child of Saltburn when he cradled Elspeth. A new Catton that is.
Even Oliver lost his obsession with Felix since he finally owned Saltburn to himself in the end and Saltburn is no longer his next obsession because it’s all a dream, he always seemed lonely and hopeless that he doesn’t have a boyfriend to love with, though he’s still evil.
But that’s okay, he will go up on his new obsession, Vanity.

NO. It's definetely more like SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. A Harold Printer with young Angela Lansbury and Michael York. With as many shocking scenes (for the times) and a creepy ending too but very different. It's available for free here on UA-cam. Poor image copy but tolerable.
