My advice for Chihuahua and other small breed dog owners is to litter train your dog, in which is much easier and faster to do. As you don't have to worry about whether it is snowing, raining, too hot, or too cold outside, and about dedicating the time to let them out. You won't have to worry about leaving your dog at home alone for an extended period of time. Lastly, because my Chihuahua never leaves my home, I don't use poisonous flea and tick solutions or heart work pills. All of which are harmful for your dog. I also don't have to worry about my tiny Chihuahua being attacked by a bigger dog outside either.
I will be listening to the man with 24 Chihuahua... had Chi's since 1960s? I wish he would right a book! Finally truth about Chis! The long coat came from crossing with Poms and other long coats. Of course that affected the temperament. The key is to study the puppies carefully and chose for temperament! I raised 2 children who are now 50+. Their personalities were very different and evident in infancy. Same is true for animals.
I loved my Chi she passed away 3 weeks ago at just under 16 years. I'm heart broken. She was perfect, never had any Behavior problems and loved everyone she met. I carefully trained her to do many tricks and socialized her well. She went for a 20 minute walk everyday and a couple other shorter walks. Lots of toy tossing in the house. She died with almost all her teeth due to me having them cleaned regularly. She did have collapsing trachea and that was horrible and terrifying at times. That problem really needs to be carefully bred out of the breed.she did shed quite alot for a little 5 pound dog. I always kept her leashed I was never able to train a reliable recall outdoors. Don't hesitate to get one unless you have allergies, they do shed. I ended up with dog allergies and need to change breeds to a poodle or no house dog at all 😪
@@laranani the dry kibble , no grain ,it contained only fish and sweet potatoes plus vitamins and minerals. She also had small amounts of raw chicken from our home flock and no salt sardines packed in water. She was on this diet for her adult life. i have 3 chihuahua they get along really well. each has VERY different personality. My first one was family pet he is 14 yeas old already. My husband use to laugh at me for owning them before dating but now he wants to retire on a farm with many chihuahuas lol... one chihuahua is shy and barely barks at anything and always cries for attention. Very smart and just watches you on the side. one chihuahua is shy only to stranger but very playful with other dogs and once we gets to know you. Loves us more than food. She will never follow stranger one chihuahua is so friendly that our trainer asked if he wanted to become a support animal. he goes up to little girl and just kiss them etc. He will follow stranger if they offer steak lol
We have two a boy (Poncho) and a girl (Nola). They're not related, but they are cute together. We got them through Pet Smart rescue dog called Cindy's Paws.
2 x 15 min is most likely enough, but mine needs 2 hours. 90 mins total in walking and at least 30 minutes of activities besides that. He is very fit and muscular, and I must admit I like it this way.
my little 4lb chi walks off leash by my said has id say about a 90% perfect recall, i say 90% because any skunk or cat and all bets are off. He would walk forever given the choice. and I wasnt aware about the dental issues until recentl so we are training to accept teeth brushing. and just learned from this video they are not bag dogs, though mine isnt, he is in the winter for travel, but outside of winter hes never in a bag.

@@barbarariley3488 I trust my chihuahua 100% around large dogs, I just have to read their body language first. My tiny chi jumps out of the way, dodge paws, let others know if they are too intense, and everything else he needs to. They're fast, nimble, and tough. And they get along with bigger dogs in a great way if you loosen up and allow them to.
I lost my 13yr old chihuahua early this year. I’m devastated she died from a heart attack. I would love another, not ta as areplacement but because I loved her so much, I just don’t know where to start
I think the guy meant walking at the dogs pace. Jogging with a chi is a bit risky, at least with males who can cross your path because of a smell. And in addition to the minimum 2 x 15 mins, you should expect your chi to need play time with toys and you, learning and repeating tricks, searching for toys/treats you've hidden, and such. They are smart, and can easily become bored/depressed if they're not stimulated. How much of these things a chihuahua needs vary a lot, but they all need it.
I have a now 5 year old Chihuahua who is amazing with children. My tiny 18.month old nephew to even more rambunctious toddler ages - she is so sweet to them all. All dogs are different and it is the responsibility of the owner to decide what age of child should be around them. It is extremely irresponsible to label all Chihuahuas as bad for children. You sound like someone who probably tells people to not own pit bulls as well. Just because you may not be a responsible and competent owner doesn't mean the rest of us are. Please make these decisions based on individual dogs rather than breeds. They are the number one dog left to the horrors of the dog pound and you telling people stuff like that is very damaging to people adopting the breed.
''It is extremely irresponsible to label all Chihuahuas as bad for children.'' I disagree. This is a very reasonable, extremely responsible precaution. You will always need to train children how to be around chihuahuas, not the other way round. Not all people know how to handle any breed of dogs so precautions are always there for people. Dogs will have their own temperaments and stature/strength that are breed-dependent and we can't change that (just like how pit bulls can hurt or kill when they snap; they're bred to be aggressive and even if they remain mostly calm and are with experienced pit bull owners, they're still unpredictable), that's why humans are the ones who should be careful. Your toddler nephew may be good with chihuahuas but that doesn't apply to every child, thus it's responsible to assume chis are bad for kids assuming that most children are not careful when handling fragile chis. To solve dog pound issues, humans should stop breeding dogs for sale and buying/adopting dogs they cannot handle to later let them go or return them to the pounds, period. Aggressive and extremely ill dogs will need to be humanely put down if no one adopts them to prevent stray dog and cost-related problem, unfortunately.
He is right though. I’ve seen several crushed and broken legged chihuahuas because they lived with children. I have grandkids and even though they love mine so much they all need to be watched constantly (like a hawk) because they can be seriously injured very easily and it’s not fair to the dog.
How old are you chihuahuas? Because I have 2 and don’t get along anymore. Female is 7 years old and the male is 5. Maybe bc the male always humps her and she doesn’t like it. They are both fixed as well and they are short hair. And they aren’t related.
@@Officialmarysosa lmao maybe the fact shes fixed has caused the problems. She clearly doesn't want to mate and never will. You should have stopped at just fixing the male and theyd get on fine
If in uk.....check kennel club website for list of assured breeeders. I assume American kennel club does the same. Otherwise, contact breed club near where you live.
Please look to your local humane society! People are "gifted" Chihuahuas very often which makes them the number one dog found in dog pounds where they will be put to sleep. Having a rescue is literally no different than having a dog with "papers" as long as the dog's personality and temperament is the right match for you and your home and family.

Hands down there th best
I have 2 chihuahuas and a five year old child and they get along great.
I think if a child learn to be careful.with.the dog they do fine around kids. But if the child is rough that is not good.
The biggest problem is if the child drops them, their legs can easily break from a fall. Never leave a child alone with a chi, we use to say.
