  • #sharpei dogs. What are they really like to live with? Find out in our latest breed guide video. It's the wrinkles that have made these dogs extremely popular... but can they have too many? There's expert advice from owners and the UK Kennel Club on selecting the right #sharpeipuppies to avoid potential problems. There's also top tips on training a Shar Pei. It seems they're really intelligent and learn fast... but will make up their own rules if you don't tackle training early. There's good news in the dog grooming department - until Sharpeis moult twice a year. Enjoy the video and don't forget to add your comment or experiences with the Shar Pei breed. They're a lovely breed. They're intelligent. They're really loving and loyal. They've got cheeky characters sometimes. Basically, once you've got one you become addicted and most people end up with two - or five like I've got. Shar Peis have increased in popularity over recent years, and it's been a little bit to the detriment of the breed. #sherpeiwrinkles make them popular with some people, simply just for their appearance. And yet, really the breed shouldn't have a lot of wrinkles. It has a loose fitting skin, but the more wrinkled it is the more care it's going to require because they can get infections inside those wrinkles. We don't breed for over-exaggerated wrinkles. They should only have moderate wrinkling over the shoulders. As a puppy they will have more wrinkles and they will grow into those wrinkles - but you shouln't be looking at a puppy that's absolutely dripping in wrinkles, because that is not what they should be bred for. Shar Pei have got a reputation of being quite difficult to train. I think that's because they've got that aloof personality. Having said that, I've had a fair few through my training classes and they have been absolutely delightful to train. They've got to see why you want them to do it. You've got to try and find out what makes them tick a little bit. They're really clever dogs and as a youngster, you really need to give them their boundaries at a young age. So if you don't want them on the settee, don't put them on the settee at a young age because they pick things up really quickly - so we all have to train them at an ealy age. So as long as they're really well socialised, they're good with children, good with people and good with other dogs. It's going to be a very powerful dog. It's not an enormous dog, but it's a powerful dog as an adult. You need to think about getting lots of early socialisation, teaching it about life - taking it out and about - doing all that in a very positive manner so it has a good experience of the life it's going to lead. When you've got a powerful dog you really need to do more than the rest of us - with a smaller dog - so you can control that power when you're out in public. When they're puppies, you don't need to over-exercise them. They grow quite rapidly, so you have to be careful with the exercise. Just moderate exercise - buidling up and then once they get to adult size, and hour a day would be perfect. They're quite laid back dogs. They're very loyal to your family. They have got a guarding instinct - so obiously you don't need to bring that guarding instinct out, it's there. They'll fuss people and then go away because they want their own space. Generally they should be happy, healthy, fun-loving dogs. There's two types of coat - there's a horse coat and a brush coat. The horse coat is a more harsher coat - and these are brush coats. Bascially it's like a once over groom, once a week. You don't need any clipping.

    My momma loved this breed so much. When she met my dad, she had 5.
    She passed that love for the breed down to me. We are planning on getting our first one since we lost out latest one, Max, soon. I just wish my momma was still here to meet the new pup.

    me and my husband got our first dog a Shar pei mashed Moxie, she is only 6months but had learned a lot, maybe more than we wanted.
    within 2 months of having her she learns sit, stay, come, leave it, drop it, a button for outside, and lay down.
    she had now picked up things by herself she knows how to open the fridge, ask for water, and even some cool tricks like spin, dance, high five, through, and roll over.
    she even only ever had one in house potty the first week. got to say we will be getting another soon.

    I remember my good friend's shar pei dogs always barked when the doorbell went off, and if they saw strangers, they did not once ever bark, they just sniffed them to get used to new visitors!
    They just got alerted anytime they heard the doorbell! 😅😅

    In 1986 my friend's dad bought a Shar Pei for 3000 dollars and had it imported from China. When it was a puppy i had alot more wrinkles then i ever seen on a Shar Pei. When it became an adult it still had more wrinkles than any adult Shar Pei i ever seen not only that he had the biggest head with a deep crack on the top of his head like a pitbull with a big rib cage he had a dark reddish coat with dark green eyes and a dark purple tongue. His name was wrinkles and he was very impressive.

    I have a Shar pei puppy he is now about 5 months old hes not the wrinkliest of dhar pei a lot of people come up to me and one of the first things they ask is he a mix breed just because he doesn't have a tone of wrinkles. He is with out a doubt purebred. Im kinda glad now he isn't full of wrinkles its a lot less I have to worry about i was lucky enough he didn't even need to have his eyes tacked. Im thinking now i know why he was the last of the litter to choose from

      Usually because of the way they breath (a bit loud) which other dogs mix with ''I'm about to do something'' and because there eyes are usually very much hidden and other dogs can't see them. Dogs react most on eye's and sounds and Shar pei has it a bit different then others, plus they are not very friendly dog in terms of playing with everybody in dog park, they only mind there own business....

      I've had 5 Shar-peis. Low protein on the diet. That's what causes "hot spots". Stay clear of rice foods. Solid Gold brand has good food, so does Royal Canin. You can also give a single Benedryl pill at meal time. I bathed ALL of my dogs in Palmolive Anti-bacterial dish soap with no adverse reactions ever.

  • @infinitesession5439

    So I've had my sher pei for 4 years now but I always have trouble cleaning her ears. Is there any advice you can give that might be able to help? I've tried cleaning her with inserting the bottle, squeezing cotton balls with dog ear cleaning solution, but both times she always tries to bite me or gets defensive. I've had to put a muzzle on her in order to make her stop biting me aggressively. I just want to make her be less defensive and more open to it if possible.

    • @generationless6942
      @generationless6942 3 роки тому +1

      Don't insert the bottle, always use the soak a cotton ball and squeeze it in that way. Give it 5 minutes, let the dog shake its head to loosen things up, then wipe out with the cotton balls. Then gently use Q-tips but DO NOT go in too deep. If you smell a yeast smell, take him/her to vet immediately for medicine. Whenever you have them sedated for teeth cleaning or anything, have the ears cleaned. Sometimes just wipe out with cotton balls dry, now and then, without a serious cleaning agenda so it gets used to you messing with the ears. (5 Shar Pei experience)

      @@generationless6942 the thing is I've tried all of that but my sher pei just tends to bite back at me. Idk what to do anymore at this point.

    • @generationless6942
      @generationless6942 3 роки тому +3

      @@infinitesession5439 Since she's already on the defensive you'll have to start over. Sit down and have a one to one conversation with her. Talk to her calmly as if she is human, don't try to clean her ears at this point, but stroke her face while talking and gently touch her ears to gain trust. Do that a few days in a row, then slowly introduce the cotton balls, just rubbing them on her face and up to the exterior of her ears, not inside. Be calm, talk gently, and take your time. Talking to your dog as a person does wonders. Good luck.

    • @PaulSmith-vo1ng
      @PaulSmith-vo1ng 3 роки тому +2

      Hi, I have my 2nd Shar-pei, neither liked having their ears cleaned but I have found the easiest way is to cut a finger from a thin rubber glove and place warmed ear cleaner solution inside before rubbing the dogs ear and then squeezing the solution inside the ear followed by a lengthy and vigorous massaging of the outside of the ear to soften and loosen the waxy substance, then stand well clear ! obviously best done outdoors !

    • @melatomic
      @melatomic 2 роки тому +1

      @@generationless6942 this is sound advice, and also what I have don with one of my rescue Pei. They actually love their face being massaged and stroked gently (eventually). Gentle and slow is the approach. Persevere and you will be rewarded.
