Apocalymon was one of those villains that was pure chaos, in the most humorous sense. Like, his goals were probably the most threatening of any enemy the digidestined faced in Adventure, but somehow Etemon, the Evil Elvis Sockmonkey, acted more threatening than an embodiment of extinct digimon.
0:10 I love the raw dissonance between the evil villain, in his madness claw at his own alien flesh leaving a deep gash and green blood to drip down his arms; and his voice line being a whiny kid asking for a regular full slice of pizza
Must say, for the incarnation of purest evil in the Digital World, Apocalymon is surprisingly considerate, considering he not only comes with both hot and cold running water, but he advices the Digidestined to always save their receipts. Even purest evil has standards.
Coming from my country's adaptation (basically a 1:1 translation from Japanese with the same soundtrack) I've got to say this was an immense culture shock. "Why you get the pizza and I get the crust."
Apocalymon is by far one of the creepiest enemies in the Digimon Adventure universe. Being what he is as he is with the power of all the Digimon who had died trying to Digivolve inside of him, feeling their despair, their hate, their anger... and all he seeks is annihilation.
To this day i will never understand why they decided to make the series 1 finale sound like a higher quality Ghost Stories but I will be eternally grateful for it
Apocalymon: I have hot and cold running water, SO WHY DO I WANT PIZZA?! Oh man I'm SO depressed! 'Stabs himself till he bleeds, while laughing maniacally'. The mon clearly has issues.
For those wondering about context. Yes, this is the official English dub. Next some actual lore and context. Apocalymon. The last boss of Digimon Adventure 01. Basically, the prior Digidestined were able to protect the Digital World by setting up a barrier/fire wall, between the worlds when they all became the Digimon Sovereigns and sacrificed one. However, this had a nasty side affect, that made it so the data of Digimon never left the Digital World. Which is why they are able to be reborn in the first two seasons. But it also left the bad data that would be purged in the Digital World. Apocalymon is the combination of all that bad data. Which is what his metaphor about pizza was. The data that creates him is all the data from fallen Digimon who were supposed to be purged. Also, for those also at a loss as to why the Digimon being reborn thing is a Season 1 and 2 thing, and became less prevalent in the following seasons, it is because of missing context from some video games. The character Ryo from Season 3, is briefly seen in a flashback in Season 2. This is because I'm the old Wonderswan video games, you play at Ryo in the prime timeline. But in the end, Ryo travels back in time, and is given the chance to live in two different timelines; creating the timelines we see here in Season 1 & 2 and Season 3. And it is also assumed that his choice to do so also spawn all the other timelines.
Typically, the VA has a script to follow. They don't decide what the character says. This looks like a sad attempt at the dubbers not wanting to scare children, so they changed what's actually being said to nonsensical gibberish.
I still can’t believe this was how they wrote the ultimate final boss. Like, most of the entire show was pretty corny, but this was some next level writing.
I really appreciate how the dub reflects the differences of each culture. Japan has an unexpected blackpill to traumatize kids, and the American one is about eating.
This dub has already shown the Digimon are well aware of real world references, so of course a Digimon born alone from failed digivolutions who went totally insane would say random things like this.
I was hoping you'd include the pizza crust line! At 0:40 it is kind of a cruel villainous way to disregard the protagonists' efforts; to destroy their main weapon and then make a corny joke about it. Even as a kid, while I knew these lines were silly, there always was a sense of sadism to them.

I remember being so triggered as a kid when he was saying all these things, because it was kinda insane. How do you respond to it, and then he breaks your treasured items that help you with saving the world. I thought there was no way for them.
How did you survive the D-Reaper?
@@Kageryushin with the red modify card.
@@Jashley418 eeeeeeyyyyyyyy
They had their receipts still, all is well
The Digivices were still under warranty.
"Wait, what am I laughing at? I'm supposed to be depressed" Golden line right there
I think being the living embodiment of a misery scrapyard will make you a little contradictory. With hot and cold running water
"What am I laughing at, I'm supposed to be depressed!" me watching VTubers
Ahhhh.... So you fell down the rabbit hole too.....
"I am the ultimate evil, complete with hot and cold running water" 🐐
I love how this insane dialogue is the official english dub. I just accepted this as a child. They were just whacky bad guys.
"Why do you all get the PIZZA but I get the CRUST?"
Finally, a villain I can relate to.
Honestly, this part scarred my entire childhood. Dude is a freaking kinky bastard
Scaring kids back in them days
Still not as scary as the spider from the movie.
0:10 I love the raw dissonance between the evil villain, in his madness claw at his own alien flesh leaving a deep gash and green blood to drip down his arms; and his voice line being a whiny kid asking for a regular full slice of pizza
thats editing in japanese footage. that was cut here for obvious reasons.
Diminutive if it can make you smile this VA then went on to voice Xemnas in Kingdom heart XD

Reboot's Digidestined: "Ha, jokes on you we don't need crests in this world"
Apocalymon: "NANI?!"
Back in my day we had to earn ultimate digimon. Kids these days...
@@viralmasquerade at least we learnt how to crash the mojyamon market and fish to immortality in the mean time
@@Belshazzaresque Maybe the real mojyamon market is the friends we made along the way
Apocalymon is by far one of the creepiest enemies in the Digimon Adventure universe. Being what he is as he is with the power of all the Digimon who had died trying to Digivolve inside of him, feeling their despair, their hate, their anger... and all he seeks is annihilation.
Dub Apocalymon: **Exist**
AND THEN THERE'S THIS ***HOLE

To this day i will never understand why they decided to make the series 1 finale sound like a higher quality Ghost Stories but I will be eternally grateful for it

...
Does that mean that the warranty was still good on everyone.
I feel like the dubbing studio knew the concept of this show was weird and just ran with it full force. And i, for one, support wholeheartedly.
Apocalymon: I have hot and cold running water, SO WHY DO I WANT PIZZA?! Oh man I'm SO depressed! 'Stabs himself till he bleeds, while laughing maniacally'.
The mon clearly has issues.
Let's be honest. Those lines made him the Goat of all final bosses
I have this inkling that those metaphors he was dropping were different in Japanese but i so love that pizza one.
He sounds like he got the abridged script on accident.
*THE PERFECT VILLAIN.*
I swear, this dubbing makes this scene partially look like a Adult Swim parody series from the early 2000’s.
"...while i get the crust!?!"
Memories of sleeping before dinner and waking up early in the morning shall now haunt the rest of my days
"WHY DO ALL OF YOU GET THE PIZZA, WHILE I GET THE CRUST??!!"
As a kid I took that seriously, but now that I'm older I can't stop laughing 😂😂😂
It's an effective metaphor
This was just Xavier Renegade Angel in Digimon.
This explains why my humor as adult is what it is.
Well when you are pretty much the physical embodiment of the recycling bin I think you get to not give two s****s
Holy shit, I forgot how much of fever dream the dub of this show was.
"Wait a minute, what am I laughing at? I'm supposed to be depressed!"
Me when I forget all my problems for a split second.
It's a crime I didn't know about this piece of legendary Dub until today
Honestly in a strange way, he is the result of living an entire existence on the internet.
“Chew on this!” **Launches attack**
**Deflected attack** “I’m not hungry!”
It has been over 20 years, and I still remember!
God, I just got flashbacks from seeing those lines XD
Wasn't that the piedmon fight?
This must be the un rated version I don’t remember him making himself bleed
He gives great shopping advice
When you think about it, this dub was pretty much Eggman pissing on the moon before Eggman pissing on the moon
Wow I never realized he looks so much like femto. At least his head, he even does the shoulder scratch griffith always does
"Mom can I have Purple Haze?"
Mom: "We have Purple Haze at home"
Purple Haze at home:
There's the JoJo reference I was looking for
Sounds more like Hermit Purple
I got it when it finished, he’s saying nonsense in which he just doesn’t care about this show the voice actor lol xD
Typically, the VA has a script to follow. They don't decide what the character says. This looks like a sad attempt at the dubbers not wanting to scare children, so they changed what's actually being said to nonsensical gibberish.
@@jedisquirrel True story, the self harming scene was left out of the original dub episode for the same reason
@@jedisquirrel the crust metaphor would make sense to a kid though,
I love the English dub of all digimon seasons. They always add these funny liners even if it’s a random person walking by.
Thanks UA-cam! Digimon's English dub is a blursed treasure.
I still can’t believe this was how they wrote the ultimate final boss. Like, most of the entire show was pretty corny, but this was some next level writing.
"Why do all of you get the pizza, while I get the crust?" Damn, I felt that
I really appreciate how the dub reflects the differences of each culture.
Japan has an unexpected blackpill to traumatize kids, and the American one is about eating.
This dub has already shown the Digimon are well aware of real world references, so of course a Digimon born alone from failed digivolutions who went totally insane would say random things like this.
I don't remember this Digimon. But now I want to watch it all again.
So basically he made a multiverse cause he didn't get pizza just the crust
So that is what a random number generator becomes when it turn into a evil Digimon...
"why do all of you get the pizza while I get the crust!?"
I'm wheezing on this
Pity that EnSabahNurmon there never experienced the joy that is stuffed crust.
You know it's been 10 years since I seen this i still remember that pizza line
I love that Mimi, in the dub, was more disgusted at the line than at the fact that he was cutting his own flesh on his shoulders.
