Tesla Model Y in the Snow - How does it handle?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- Rare snow in the Seattle area, took the 2021 Model Y Performance out on in the snow. Added the aftermarket Tesla 19" Continental All Season tires to handle the winter. Enjoyed a few parking lots and winter roads.

Wow! What a smart testdriver...snow conditions, white vehicle, and he doesn't even clean his front lights off!
Tesla drivers for ya. If you need a car that can literally drive itself you're probably not a very good driver at all
@@yodog250 nothing wrong with the Tesla. But yes, the driver is questionable.
@@yodog250 Most ignorant comment I've seen on UA-cam all week- and I've seen some doozies.
I’ve navigated through treacherous Canadian snow storms for 20+ years now so a lot of experience here. I think experience is an issue in this video. I have no issue with my Tesla in Canadian winters thus far.
I've been living 20+ years in the tropics so it sure is... lol.
You might want to use a snow brush to clean your windows and headlights next time. Also, preheat the car as mentioned in other comments.
You can get a ticket where we live (Canada) for driving with that much snow still on the hood. At speed it can blow off in one big chunk and startle the driver behind you. The fact he is driving with the headlights totally covered and the windshield still a mess speaks volumes.
@@comeaujo you can get a ticket here in Seattle with all that snow on your car as well. The local news stations had to remind people that it's not safe to drive with snow covering your headlights and your windscreen.
I was just going to post the same thing.
For sure a good way to ruin wiper blade inserts.
Thanks Karen 😂
The car handles exactly like any other all wheel vehicle equipped with SUMMER LOW PROFILE PERFORMANCE TIRES...
I think he has the Tsportline rims on it. Those look like that Uberturbine rims from the factory.
I'm getting my model y in February in Norway and we are required have proper winter tyres. Mine will be equipped with Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3's and I can promise that we will not be getting stuck under any circumstances.
I drove a Tesla Model 3 through my high school parking lot late at night with my cousin and brother that had 7 inches of fresh snow on the ground while it was still snowing. It really felt like there was nothing there because it did such a good job plowing through it. The other people in their Subaru who were also drifting in the parking lot with us didn’t have the luck or fun we had and kept getting stuck. As we left we passed by them and they yelled “I love your Tesla!” and we waved and I played the Santa Mode and drifted out of the parking lot. That was a fun Christmas.
You never ever should use your wiper blades to clean heavy snow off your windows.
Unless of course you like to replace them after putting cuts in them that turn into streaks on the windshield.
Newbie winter driver enjoying first snow like a puppy. Clueless, but cute.
Nailed it. Been living in Thailand past 25 years, so forgot most of this winter stuff.
3:30, while he was spinning around backwards i was waiting for him to hit that pole. With those tires and inexperience he was lucky to end his romp in the snow without incident.
Bryan - you're supposed to scrape your windshield with an ice scraper before you travel. Also - wipe the snow off your headlights? Is this your first time in snow?
@@Scorpion-vh8lj I think you meant to say "buy all season tires not all terrain tires". I believe he is using all season tires. The performance is what I expected. If you want better performance, you need winter tires
@@Eric-xh9ee in recent years they have developed All Weather that are actually really good in snow, while All Season are mediocre all the time. All Season don’t have the snow tire symbol as described.
@@brendykes6599 it must depend upon the country. Where I live, I often see all season tires that are rated for mud and snow. I've never heard of all weather tires only all season and all terrain tires
@@brendykes6599 I googled what you were talking about. I see. Where I live, most people just use all season tires than switch to winter tires. I still think it's probably the safest option but maybe all weather tires would work for mild snow conditions
@@Eric-xh9ee I was all prepared to buy All Weather until the tire guy at Costco mentioned that I’d need something better if I went up the mtn to the ski area a lot. I’m an avid skier, so I got Continental VikingContact 7. That (& some angels) may have saved us on the cross country trip we just took.
Seems to operate just as good as most vehicles the same size. in same conditions.
0:13 Depends how long you pre-heated the car for?
0:37 Depends how long you run the defroster on the front window, like any other car?
0:51 Depends on what tiers you have..
1:35 Depends on what level suspension you got?
Let see how well it will clear the snow off the windshield. Uhhh like every other car guy. Jesus.
I would say all the issues were just user error... First, you wipe the snow off your car and save your windshield wipers, don't be lazy. Also driving around with a hood full of snow explains a lot too. I could imagine with the tongue it might be hard not to peel out on a hill but still.
We had snow here in MN yesterday and it handled quite well on snow-packed roads. My wife drove it today and said it was fine on snow and icy roads. One thing is that the car does notice the reduced traction and subsequently reduced the regen braking.
Was coming down a snowy mountain road and wondered about the regen braking - hoping it would not put me into a slide.
If those are the Continental tires I think they are they got really poor reviews for use in snow.... so that would make sense if you can't get up the driveway. The Michigan cross climate twos are great in the snow and wet roads
its snowing everywhere
I didn’t watch the videos at first, just listened. Sounded like the car wasn’t preconditioned or defrosted before testing: sound of frost on windshield with wiper wiping test. The car has preconditioning features from the app. People might want to know about those features.
About the slide/trouble getting up a hill…winter rated tires? Makes a massive difference. Easy to make any car look bad if the wrong setup is used.
I could make a motorcycle look bad by letting it fall over when I parked it, and not mentioning it doesn’t have a kickstand. Doesn’t make all motorcycles bad though. 😜
Nice video!
Always preheat: no need to clear the car and no stuck handles :)
With real snow tires (e.g. Nokian) it’s very hard to get stuck…
You need to preheat the car every time its fozen, unless you want to ruin the window elevators and wipers.
Yep, I've made this mistake once and it ruined my wipers. My current wipers are over 2 years old, and still fine as long as I make sure to preheat my car if it's icy out.
Looks great! I had the stock 19" All Seasons on my Model Y LR, which are marked with the Mud & Snow icon, on my big road trip. I hit snow in the Sierras between Sacramento and Reno, the Rockies going east out of Vancouver, the Prairies from Moosejaw to Regina and lastly from Detroit to Toronto and the car and the tires were just fantastic, never once lost traction. There's a setting on the big screen to reduce initial power and extra traction and I definitely had those turned on.
Did you have any downhill moments where you wondered if the aggressive regen braking could cause a traction loss?
@@Bryanbkk No, that never even came to mind. I was very delicate on the go pedal though.
My Performance Model Y is on its way, and I'm really considering buying the Gemini/winter tire package from tesla. This video is helpful, ty
The Tesla dual motor (performance/Long range) are top notch when it comes to snow. The issue from my experience is usually EXPERIENCE DRIVING. Even regular all season tires navigate well in snow.
Tidbits:
1. Pre-warm Car
2. Clean exterior Lights
3. Ease on the pedal to allow dual motor and traction to kick in.
4. Have fun!
Awesome dude! I'm getting my MPY in Seattle in 4 days!
Might still have snow!!
you should have tried Slip Start mode. I think in may disable the traction control. Spinning a bit may help clear the tires and let you keep more momentum up the hills.
The car is more than capable. Weakest link is the tires
That is honestly the case for most cars lol.
Exactly, all seasons are no comparison to real winter tires. Since I have a m3p and summer tires on most months, it just makes sense to get real winter tires for the winter. It's rather silly to make a video about the model y performing in the snow, when the only factor that matters is the tires. You can watch vids of Tesla's doing ice racing circuits with studded tires. Obviously the low centre of gravity, wide wheel base, traction control and others put it in the upper echelon of winter cars one could get. Get proper tires to match it.
All Season Tires are not Snow Tires. Having ran both, I can tell you it's night and day difference.
Very true
Winter driving takes practice like anything. Suggest you clear your windshield with a brush don’t put so much load on your wipers, put decent winter tires on, shovel your driveway ;)
For hills in winter, you want real winter tires. Nokkian are the best, but any winter will do. A set of winters is cheaper than an accident.
If you almost never drive in snow it may not be worth it, but if you plan to, winters are definitely the way to go, especially in mountains.
Yep. Nokian for unstudded and Continental for studded (their IceContacts rock).
I'm in Seattle now and will be picking up my delivery in Feb. This is the perfect video as I was just wondering how a Model Y Performance would handle the snow we got on Xmas.
Just picked up my Model 3 Performance in Bellevue today - i was hoping mine was going to come with the all season tires but it came with summer tires. so be prepared to buy or need to buy all season/ winter tires to last through the jan and feb snow we’ll most likely get :)
Make sure you get all season tires for the MYP
@@nickyhoang6113 i’m definitely getting snow/winters for mine just because of the stupid amount of ice on the roads
Buy some Toyo Open Country AT3 tires for it. I promise you'll feel much safer
Google the tires and lookup reviews to other competitors. Toyos are the best for the money my opinion. You don't suffer as many bead leaks either due to newer more efficient rubber used.
I have an FJ Cruiser. In 4×4 in Banff with BF Goodrich KO winter snowflake tires for severe Mountain weather, I still slid down hills. Get better tires. I have studded Nokians for winter.
The only Y I haven't seen parked in a ditch or against a guardrail in the snow
Nice camera work. I like the shots with snow flying off the tire.
Just and FYI Tesla says in storms to put the wipers in replacement mode so they don't freeze at the bottom.
beautiful
Hey dude, try buying some Toyo Open Country AT3 tires for that thing or some Toyo Extensa HP 2's. I promise your sliding issues won't be as bad. Just try them out your next set of tires, I promise you'll be happy.
All season tires are not really for snow use.
All weather tires are the actual compromise tire everyone thinks All season tires are.
Snow tires are the only tires actually designed specifically to drive in snow.
Buy better tires or get your rapid hazard off the road. Your $70,000 Tesla is not immune to the sliding $650 civic.
NICE VIDEO.
Once you have a tesla with the correct season tyre you will get up💯
Hold down the park button while in motion to activated the rear parking brake to throw it into a slide. Lol
Always clean the snow from windows, lights and turn signals before you drive off. It should be the law.
In Norway it is. You’d lose your license for not wiping your hood, headlights or roof.
@@rbkfan200 you probably wouldn't lose your license, just get a fine
Maybe if you had a shovel first and some winter tires you might get out easier
My mom said the same thing. Also was suppose to clean the frunk. 😂
4:24 that was close haha
My man ever heard of winter tires
Lol…. I’ve driven a RWD P85 in the Norwegian mountains for several years. It handled 3-4x the amount of snow in your driveway effortlessly, whereas your AWD Y slid. The difference? PROPER TIRES. And are you seriously not wiping off the snow on your windshield, hood and headlights before driving??
😂yeah people always blame the car and not the tires 😂😂
@@Eric-xh9ee that’s a classic! Hahah, it’s ridiculous how people feel they «need» AWD now. Fair enough that it’s easy to install on an EV, but very few people actually need it. It’s more than sufficient with RWD or FWD if you’ve got proper tires and remember to keep the wheels rolling, not stopping in hills etc..
@@rbkfan200 my dad just put snow tires on his car, yesterday. He doesn't drive much so he said he hadn't gotten to it yet until he got stuck lol. I guess he was hoping we wouldn't get a lot of snow, until we got 20cm two days ago haha. A lot of older people say that you don't need snow tires and they didn't have snow tires back in their day but they're the same ones who say "this vehicle is good in the snow" and "that vehicle is bad in the snow" and then you look at the tire tread and one car has a much more aggressive tread.
I don't understand why you'd buy a second set of wheels/tires and not put a real set of winter tires on?! 🤔
Did you check that the windscreen wipers weren't stuck to the windscreen before you put them on? That's a big factor where we are, as it can strain the wiper motor if the blades are still firmly attached to the windscreen.
Also, did you pre-heat the interior of the car at all? There seemed to be a lot of snow still on the car when you got into it.
Thanks for the video.
Good point, that should be standard practice in the future.
thats why Tesla suggests to put the wipers in replacement mode before exiting the vehicle before snow or ice storms.
Next time. Turn off your Traction control. Keeping it on will allow the computer to stop the wheel spin when it senses slippage, and you'll loose traction.
I heard from my model Y owner friend that the regenerative braking is what he doesn't like about driving the tesla in the snow.
Turning on off road mode helps with that.
nah, Its fantastic. If you wanted to (and you wouldn't) you could turn off regen
Your 4 season tires are not designed to perform in snow or below 5-Celcius as 4seasons tires rubber compounds are not designed to grip in low temperatures or snow.
Need winter tires or all season at minimum. And use slip start when stuck
I have a model Y performance that I've switched to Michelin Crossclimate 2's and we're set to have a fairly major event this weekend. Looking forward to seeing if it handles the snow as well as my old S60.
A little more ground clearance would be nice. Adjustable air suspension would be the best option...
Yes, it's been a problem for the MYP and my driveway, would have been grateful for adjustable air suspension.
I mean… is snow not normal there? Those tires just won’t do on fresh snow, first of all. Second of all, running the wipers without preheating and clearing the snow and ice from the windshield is a great way of breaking them. :p
A couple of things to note too is that you should always clear your headlights and hood of snow and ice, that could give you a LOT of trouble in highway speeds. In addition, heating your tires by forcing them to skid down through the snow layer and down to the tarmac beneath will glaze the snow and make it even more slippy. Easy is key. I live in the middle of Norway with long cold winters and has never had a problem with my RWD Tesla
As soon as this person did not preheat the car or have any discussion about the tires he was using.... that's where he lost me. No bueno.
You're driving a white car in snow with no headlights and didn't bother to brush off the hood. Are you from Florida?
Good grief, driving in snow without winter tires !?
One of my favorite things to do is turn off the TCS & gun through the snow covered streets in my '16 WRX. The Subaru AWD system has been so much fun. It's looking like I could get a similar result with the Tesla Y. I'd opt for the performance package, but it looks like it's gonna be pretty fun even with the standard model. Only concern I have is, their extra weight - how does that translate to deeper snow over, say, grass instead of snow over tarmac?
Do u recommend using snow chains? or just all season tires?
Where in Seattle is this?. I’m trying to move out there. This looks like a very good community.
Lol that’s my school parking lot
"Collecting a little bit of snow on there"
You are only as good as the tyres you have on
Well the question on everyone's minds is....How does it handle?
respect for using your car like a car. %99.9 of tesla owners are well you all know .....
All season tires as crap in snow, crap in wet, crap on dry!
2 words: winter tires.
Hello, good video ! But I'm not sure I understand. Have you changed the 21 inch origin rims for 19 inch winter rims with the same appearance? I didn't know it was possible. So there is no problem with the brake calipers like with the Model 3 Perf?
Great footage. Would've loved to know the speed to get a sense of relative performance in bad conditions. But great footage regardless. Thanks
Straight powder is never a true test. Please do another vid if you ever get other winter elements.
Looks no fun in the snow. You can't whip it around at all?
All seasontires are not winter tires 🤦🏻♀️ there's way too much snow on the ground for all seasons ffs
You ran your wipers over a windshield with ice on it. That destroys your blades. (how do you defrost your windshield in an all electric car? is that even a thing?) You didn't shovel any snow before you tried to pull out so OfCourse you got stuck. You didn't clean the snow off your headlights or turn signals. Those are the tools we use to communicate with other drivers or for that matter any of the car windows ether. I will give you kudos for going to an empty parking lot and slide around. Second best thing you can do to become a better driver in those weather conditions. (#1 is put a million driving miles behind you)
Typical Seattle people, driving in the snow with sport wheels and probably tires. Blame it on Tesla as usual! Lmao 🤣
Looks like every other vehicle
You're supposed to preheat the car...Lol
Bryan - even the TESLA RWD is Better than MOST AWD made by LEGACY OEM's.
see - Tesla video - Ice lake Driving.
You give Tesla owners a bad name making ignorant comments like this. You can`t believe that when equipped with the correct tires AWD performs worse than RWD regardless of automaker.
@@Mike-dd8bd - go watch Tesla video - Ice lake Driving.
@@markplott4820 You watched one video and make a conclusion. I am telling you are simply incorrect. Its actually not even physically possible for a RWD car to have the same level of traction as AWD with comparable tires. Beyond what you want.

Need to test that... I was shocked how large they were when they arrived. Weight seems about the same as the 21" Ubers.
With awd teslas, do you have to put it into that mode or does it just do it? Ty.
Im watching a video about how a tesla would work in snow while Im in January and live in Florida making this video useless to me since I don’t travel by car either but oh well
The standard tires are very bad in the snow. I have owned six four wheel drive vehicles since the 80s and every one has only had all season tires with much better performance than the Tesla tires.
I absolutely love the car on dry pavement, but am quite disappointed with the driving on snow.
Glad to hear that. I've been concerned if the $4k spent on the wheels was a worthwhile expense.
@@Bryanbkk Not an owner yet. What do you mean $4K spent on tires?
Couldn't clean the Snow off ur hood and front? Not cool
The most high-tech car at the moment and you don't know you can pre-heat it?
You are killing the wiper blades..... just like with every brand.
...did you download the software update and do the lightshow yet?
Just got it, need to try soon!
Wouldn't matter the snow was on the hood the whole time!
Using non snow tires in snow. Not going to work. Get proper tires, and you have a story to report on here.
First when I got snow on my window shield I clean it by myself not not with the wipers. That is just lazy.
Lmao… you can preheat the car from your phone, OR treat this like an ICE car and get it all wrong.
Clear off your damn headlights! Huge safety issue, first time in the snow? You can't see signals or anything
What tires are these? Continental what? ua-cam.com/video/OL-6m3v3i-o/v-deo.html The pattern looks like the DWS 06 but I am not sure. but the 06 work well in snow for me. I now have the Michelin CrossClimate+ and they feel much worse in snow despite being snow rated.
I live up in northern canada and the idiots in our government decided that EV's are our future so its -50f right now so can any EV owners let me know how their vehicles function in actual winter conditions ?
A Tesla car is a car. If you expected to get up that without shoveling you should have bought a 4x4 pickup.
a 4x4 pick up has no chance against the model Y in the snow.. The Y is fantastic in snow (given appropriate tires of course)
Clear your headlights, dude.
Snow is fresh and powdery will hold on the wheel. Come back later when the weather change and the snow develop some moisture he be spinning not wheeling. Most likely her wheels be skidding. A 12 your old will laugh correct him.
he can only do in some snow condition. Any car can do this in that show it not about Tesla. so, nothing to impress tesla only can do this kid show.
I feel that powdery snow is mich easier to drive on than compacted snow which is like ice. Powdery snow is like driving on fry pavement
I think my Miata is better in the snow with summer slicks
my 99 Honda does better with studded snow tires haha get you some boy
Those tires must be really low quality.
It’s the tyres……..stupid. Don’t care what you have, it’s the tyres.
So, some hipster, that has no idea how to drive in snow is getting an article on teslas in snow? Elon is going to wanna smack this dork.
Not Impressed for the money and that really isn't a lot of snow,
It's the tires. Sporty, performance tires are lousy in the snow. The car doesn't really matter.
@@beltrams So it is the owner's ignorance that is making the car look bad? If you shoot a video of a product at least have the product tooled correctly. Just a thought...
Didnt even clear off your headlights before driving on public roads? That's dangerous af. You should ALWAYS drive with headlights on in the snow, you didnt even clear yours off plus you have a white car. Please stay off the roads in a snowstorm if you're not going to use common sense
Pure laziness, wipe the damn snow off the car, and shovel the damn snow, btw every time you recharge that pos guess what? 95% of coal is still making electricity.
So much cringe in such a short video.
