- By request, and in celebration of my 50th birthday today :-)
Lyrics:
[I. TOGETHERNESS (Instrumental)]
[II. CROSSFIRE]
Julie's sick and tired of her job n'all the reasons lately
She took it out on God and laid her soul to hell and let the baby die
Julie's child was born without a need or a reason for being
She took it as a message from a real and a distant life
Shirley gets to help her with the child though she's strung out on crack
time
Shirley never knew what it was to be held in real love
Together getting high to get to mess up their night
Anything to get up so they're losing their mind
Just to get high, breaking out from this life, gotta get them a drug to
get higher
Julie gets to walking out and drags the child, says 'come on'
How we'll walk in the dark of the morning
Car is screaming round the corner, drugged to heaven, guns are loaded,
locked in vengeance
Who shoots the child?
Watching in the ghetto is the spine and the cruel of the gang life
Sign language of the get go you get in the gang life
Fear the only law, fear is all we hear about,
Feed us in the raw, fear is all we fear about,
Listen, get up, quickly get up, get up
It's the answer to punishment given you
Don't give us reasons,
Caught in the crossfire dying
God give us reasons,
God get a reason, God give a reason
Why lay dead a child's life?
[III. THE GIVING THINGS]
That talk is just a worry and a worry in a man
That life is just a worrying and getting in a mess
That deal is just awakening his spirit to be giving him
The pleasure of the giving things within
This day is of a meeting of the manner to be borne
And like a ship you come safely to the shore of love eternal
[IV. THAT IS]
That talk is just a worry and a worry in a man
That life is just a worrying and getting in a mess
That deal is just awakening his spirit to be giving him
The pleasure of the giving things within
That word is in it, that talk is in it
This day is of a meeting of the manner to be borne
And like a ship you come safely to the shore of love eternal
That beat is of the wanting of the where you're going
That street talk is the basis of the push and shove
They never told you that you have the right
The spirit of the angel, angels sing "Shaava, shava shava-Shaava"
They be waiting for you, they be asking for you
We depending on you, we depending on your healing of the structure centre
Until you reach and touch your own redemption
They never give you a reason, they never give you a reason
They never give you a, give you a, give you a, give you a reason
[V. ALL IN ALL]
All in all the wisdom call, you shall be young, you shall be free
Watching for the signals that come easily
Take it as a point of love, a reference place to where you are
Every step a step to set you free
All for the sake and the calling of light
Ask as you give, as you measure in time
All in all this will to give, this sacrament, this need to live
Take it as a step to bring love easily
All in all the wisdom call, you shall be young, you shall be free
Waiting for the waiting to be free
Talk is the easy end, everyone heard
Ask as you seek the clear, ask and you can
This play is of a myriad of conscience sitting
This day is of a special way of love relating
This sight is in it, this way is in it, the dream is of the positive to
make you
Wonder
How did heaven begin?
This time is in it, this thought is in it, this light is in it,
When you see, you get it
All in all the wisdom call, you shall be young, you shall be free
Take it as it comes so easily
We'll be there beside the sign, the wherewithal, this will to be,
Bringing all the love that's meant to be
All in all we shall be young, we shall be free, we shall be there
All in all this time is meant to be
[VI. HOW DID HEAVEN BEGIN]
These days are just a worry to the children of the world
These days are just a worry to the children of the world
How did heaven begin?
How did heaven begin?
[VII. AGREE TO AGREE]
Don't imagine any way, so any fool can take away the drugs and the
pressure
Asking for the level where a world divides its answers
To the gang lords of evil life, they can't show you how
Look upon this life as just a picture you are painting
There is a reason for this being
Look upon this place as just a part of all that is
It is a spiritual part of being
Live with the power, you can be the strength it is
Walk among the living, you can be the strength it is
To give, to live, this hope, comes through,
It takes the trust to agree this agreement
Live for the breaking free
Live for the breaking freedom
Just let it come through come through
I've been an ardent Yes fan for over 40 years. No other band or musician has shaped my life the way those guys have. It is weird to think just how profound their influence has been.
To me, this song stands proudly alongside their very best work from the 70s.
The opening section is as beautiful a piece of music as I could ever hope to hear, from anyone, in any genre. It is like being offered a glimpse of heaven.
God bless all Yes fans, young and old!
The greatest show on earth ✨️🎶🙏🎶✨️
Agreed. I think I've seen them more than any band, and they we amazing every time. Haven't seen them since the last division of Jon and/or the death of Chris. But wow, how they roared.
Ladies and gentlemen Chris Squire and Yes the greatest show on earth
The intro guitar melody is like a poem. So beautiful. This is why Yes is so amazing.
Nothing compares to what Yes has created. This is just another masterpiece. They say great things only come once in a lifetime. Thats Yes...and my wife. They will be listing to this 100 years from now, and be amazed.
This has the energy of their early years, I love it!
The whole song is wonderful, but the first three minutes are pure poetry.
My mother's name was Julie and I was "born" unable to breathe. (Cinched umbilical so tightly wound, around my neck) I was her first of three children. I am so very glad that I survived and grew to love YES and influence my younger brother to love them as much. We've been to many YES Concerts together; always an amazing, lovely and wonderful time. This song hits home fires, sings to all of us. Thank you for a great upload, so appreciated!
Wow your post moves me to tears. Been a fan since 1982. Their music moves me, its beautiful. So many good songs. They dont make bands like Yes anymore.
My first love was named Julie.
Still miss her. Miss my x wife even more.
I am glad you are alive. Stories like yours are why Yes are a Great Gift to humanity....but not a greater gift than You!
You are That that is. :D
Thank you for influencing your brother my brother influenced me and I'm so grateful. 😊
Your words made my night. I was adopted. I've paid it forward and never looked back. God save America and the world that is on a collision course w futility!
Incredible song. Major props to Jon for tackling the always controversial subject of why do bad things happen to innocent people, by taking us from the streets all the way to Heaven and back. Only Yes could pull this off.
Steve Howe is simply unbelievable!
Yes! That solo at the end is out of this world :O.
A return to Yes brilliance when the band resumed its true Progressive instincts.
I've been a huge Yes fan since the early 70s (when I was in single digits) and I believe this to be one of their very best songs, so there! Alan White is just nailing it here. His groove is unbelievable. That whole "Crossfire" section is just a study in how tight a great band can be, and I like the grittier lyrics.
I so love this song; say what you will about the true brilliance of original drummer Bill Bruford, who's nothing short of a genius, but I think this is Alan White's best YES track period, syncopation is fantastic, and my favorite for drums on a Yes song. The whole band was on fire -- great job on the video here as well.
0:00 to 3:25 That... That is what Steve Howe's all about!
Good One.
I've always said, give YES the challenge to do a 20 minute song and they'll live up to it.
AND it will be greatness! Any band can make a 20 minute song - nobody beats YES! No?
@@nancymjohnson Agree 100% ELP's Tarkus and Karn Evil 9 is close though.
@@jskypercussion Me too. Maybe also Pink Floyd on dogs, atom heart mother suite and echoes. SOYCD is not precisely so satisfactorily long and they don't play it full live. But Yes are kings of long epic songs on 20, 15 and 10 minutes.
This whole song is fantastic, but it's the "All In All" section that totally hits me. Thank you, to the guy who made this, for putting the most fitting and beautiful pictures in all the right places on all your videos (especially this one).
+Luke Forden ALL IN ALL OUR WISDOM CALLS FOR HIS WILL TO GIVE THIS SACRAMENT AND TRUTH FOR THE NEED TO LIVE IN SAFETY .. ONCE A DRUG ADDICT RESORTS TO CRIME THEY BECOME A FELON AND MUST BE INCARCERATED TO THE FULL EXTENT OF THE LAW...WE MUST INTERVENE TO BREAK THE CYCLE OF INCARCERATION.
@RottenRooster08
I agree break the cycle & just say no
This song cements Alan White as one of the all time greatest drummers!!
So true. Its really Alan that I connect with and listen to on this song. Also some of Jon's most incredible vocals.!
AMEN !!!!
You got that right brother like sound chaaser and others " AMEN!!! "
A real full-on epic, yet so under-rated. Love Alan's 7/8 rhythm & Jon Anderson's 'chant', (What does he actually say in that?) followed by Squire / Howe digging their heels in there. Who, after all these decades, can still write such beautiful music like this? Nobody on this kinda scale that I can think of.
Mark Newman-Who? Sadly, not even Yes these days. :(
Its a variation of the Monkey Chant, which Jon has used elsewhere. In this song I personally believe that Jon uses it to describe passing from the physical world to the spiritual world (and back).
@@Robert_St-Preux I was really disappointed by their last album. John Davison is a good enough singer, but he is nowhere near the composer that Jon Anderson is.
This song is from the KeyStudio album which was recorded in 1996 and it way better than anything they’ve done since then .
Im 21 and absolutely in love with this album (the studio tracks from both Keys records) and albums like Relayer, TFTO, Going for the One, The Yes Album, Fragile and CTTE
Love this music so much. The energy of positive emotion and the compositional depth is out of this world.
I mean it would be cool to be in you guys's age group... Maybe I couldve seen the "classic" lineup or Patrick Moraz lineup live but at the same time Im happy to be a new generationer. Theres progressive music coming out NOW that Im head over heels over with bands like Xerath, Gorguts and Oceans of Slumber. Prog has just gotten a lot more extreme abbrasive and aggressive in certain circles of musical expression over the decades haha
I've been listening to this band for twice as long as you've been alive but I fully agree with everything you've said. Yes is transcendent. They will give you a lifetime of rewards.
For me three
I am from that generation. I was literally leaning on the stage when they played Portland, Ore. in 1973 or 1974. Fans used to be able to do that. To my knowledge only one other human can play multiple keyboards simultaneously the way Wakeman can (could). Her name is Emily Bear and I believe she is 16 now in 2017.
James, Don't worry about not being from any generation. When I listen to Mozart, Beethoven, Czerny etc , I don't wish I was alive back then, I just appreciate the fact that I can listen to, and appreciate their music in the here and now. Let's hope, thanks to you and those like you, that Yes is listened to well into the future. Best wishes , John.
I was born in 1976 and I am addicted to Yes. I will check out the bands you listed.
YES the best band group of the universe :D. This is ART!
YES took me thru the Universe of love, peace and understanding at age 15. I honestly think it is why I am a good person! Positivity works
Unique, even by Yes's incredible standards. Love every note!
Martin Dytham Agreed! This was as creative a song as anything these 5 guys did together since Tales or Awaken. Just amazing to me they still had it 20 years later!
+Martin Dytham And as is the case with Yes music, there are a lot of frickin notes. ;)
It's a trip
One of my all time fave Yes tracks... powerful everytime
Truly an amazing piece of music!
I agree with the folks who see this as the great lost Yes song on par with their best early work. Reminds me of The Yes Album in places, including some of Anderson's vocals.
I do like this one, especially the end and that mid section symphonic lyrical by Jon. All good. Bass kicks it at the end. Love you Chris.
Most under-recognized Yes song EVER! I've only had time to skim your video just now, but it looks wonderful. Looking forward to letting it rip and really watching it all the way through. Thanks for this effort.
incredible.. just like in 70s... sooo Close To The Edge... is there a word for THIS masterpiece? yes, there is... YES... PS. sound of kick drum is soooo tasty... brilliant and tight!
kinda funny I was listening to CTE , and thinking to myself, that
from SK, into MD, and then this , melded quite nicely ;)
This is That is IS so beyond the 70's. Opinion: "Masterpiece,": YES!
Hot take: Close to the Edge is a cacophonous mess and comparing it to this is an insult to the latter
@@centerflag982 Not a "Hot take" if you don't include the reasoning.
Yeah right. this is right up to CttE quality. I hate that you can't actually find it on streaming services. where the hell is the keys of ascension album
"Like Yes used to be". That says it exactly. This track is the only one in many, many years that sounded like 'that' Yes, to me. The Yes who made crazy, beautiful music like Fragile, Close to the Edge, Tales, Relayer, 'Turn of the Century'....
Hey vzqk...you have the best sound quality and visual videos of YES. I just wanted to thank you.
one of the best Yes's song
The last time they hit this level of realism and honesty was Relayer .
C'est tellement vrai !
please..please..please don't equate this with the masterpiece that is Relayer. It's not close.
@@EastmanD Relayer is super overrated, come at me
Drama was a great álbum too
“Awaken”.
YES touches every feeling!
Perhaps the last of the truly great Yes albums, and even perhaps their finest accomplishment as a band. They learned Rabin's lessons on production and how to arrange, and Keys marks the ephemeral moment where they were able to marry the new to the old for tunes that are gorgeously prog, and yet have the edge on them that the best Big Generator tunes had.
Magnification is great and Fly From Here too..
@@juaniriarte1193 Add "From a Page" to that list, too! 🔥 I put it above "Fly From Here" personally...it's really very soulful
I'm reading the posts below mine and couldn't agree more. Both are some of the most underrated musicians in their own particular genres of work. When you see lists of the top 10 guitarists in the world Steve Howe seems to be consistently omitted and in my 45 years of going to all kinds of different concerts I've never seen anybody play like Rick Wakeman. These guys are the premier progressive rock band for the last 40 years, period. R.I.P. Chris, you are missed.
I'm in a Yes mood today, and your stuff really hits the spot. Thanks.
This is Yes East's return to greatness. They hadn't put out material this good since "Going For The One" and "Drama." Yes West was great too, but different.
Steve Howe is brilliant on this song as is Wakeman... Story line is dark, but effective in the message... What other band would dare write something so daring to reach out to addicts in need of help... Why do we care? Our children are scared about the future?
the song tells you how fucked up the people are in this country are today, drugs,no fear of authority, raised to be a bunch of spoiled pussies who never had any disipline in their homes and schools, these fuckheads, will be the downfall of our nation, they don't respect anything or anyone,no fucking morals.god will have the last laugh on judgement day, remember, you will all be judged by a supreme being, wake up
Chill out and enjoy the music, mate.
Given your erudite and multifaceted explanation of the current crop of social ills I can see why no one over the age of 8 or 9 would have any respect for you, even if your views, after the removal of your lowest possible level of written communication were removed, had some validity.
Yes, was not the only group from that time to speak out about the social problems we had then. Burton Cummings and The Guess Who released, "Undone." about the tragedy of drugs and my generation then both Cummings and Billy Joel went a step further with, "Stand Tall" by Cummings and, "Second Wind," by Joel both about the needless tragedy of teen suicide. Mr. Cummings is still trying to bring awareness to teen suicide with songs such as, "Take One Away." Just search, burton cummings veritable quandary, here on UA-cam.
Dude. Try to use a period once in awhile...
I like how at 9:58 Alan waits another quarter-note to hit the snare just so it would fit with the singing.
Awesome find
Chris Squire heating up the neck of a Rick for 19 minutes straight.
Are you talking about his Rickenbacker bass or Rick Wakeman
Top 3 Yes song! Gates of Delirium, Close to the Edge... All three are at the top! Whites drumming is his best and the last five minutes of this music is outstanding!
One of the best Yes studio songs ever.
Don't know of any other yes song that makes so explicit a social comment. It is a musical powerhouse that has no equivalent.
Don’t kill the whale. Harold Land.
A song full of meaning... and an awesome video!
Simply an awesome song from an awesome band!
This song is still proof that Yes still had it in the 90's. Also I personally feel the Magnification album is an excellent album. There are a few outstanding songs on there that nail the Yes standard.
The 80s was a serious setback culturally. Suddenly art get mixed up with profits. Most rock bands started to do crappy pop music to chase success. Although I could be totally wrong about this as I was born in the late 80s, but I noticed this trend both in music and movies.
@Dávid Kertész Yes absolutely. You had to pick and choose the good stuff. There was still some really great stuff in the 80's but you had to be more selective. There was a lot of junk as well.
All in all we shall be young, we shall be free, we shall be there. All in all this time is meant to be - beautiful
probably been 3-4 yrs simce i last lstened to this get piece of art. sounds so fresh, like yes used to be. music this is to be treasured, put in a vault so as not to be lost but also to be shown off as what used to be, a great time in music....
"They never give you a reason."
Effing amazing. The music and the video.
I must have heard this a thousand times, but it is really an uncelebrated Yes classic.
The video matches the piece very well also. Thanks vzqk50HD. :)
This song has been dancing in my head all day!!!. Wonderful.

Amazing, only appreciating this almost 20 years later. rock has been dead a long time!
Certain folks have been insisting rock is "dead" for the better part of half a century now... and it has yet to be true.

This song is great - I remember listening to this when I was on the treadmill in Vietnam adopting my daughter - I really wish that I could find a live performance of it.
Yes has never performed any part of it live.
Only Jon could take the question of why do bad things happen and answer it by taking us on a journey to heaven and back trying to get us to view things from God's perspective. Absolutely brilliant.

This song amazed me when it came out because for the first time in forever the five musicians who happened to be in the group at that time were communicating with each other again.

YES is absolutely supernatural!! And this masterpiece is from 1996 am I right? Wow

These days are just a worry to the children of the world.
Thanks for the video magic! The great thing for me being a young teen in the early 70"s was YES concerts! ...Like a ride into something you already LOVE!
One of my favorite Yes songs. Yet I never see where anybody ever mentions it. Alan White is playing that 7/8 snare drum part with Jon Anderson singing the chant on top. This has so many different parts. And who keeps all of it together? White and bassist extraordinaire Chris Squire. I'm shocked that Yes is going to keep on touring without him. When did they become this band that I don't recognize? It was bad enough without Jon Anderson. I'm more than a little disappointed.
drewper73 Billy Sherwood is taking Rick's place on bass. Good luck with that, though he does know the music like the back of his hand!
dabull136 Chris, you mean?
Chris specifically said for the band to keep on keeping on and named Billy has his successor. Who are we to judge? Those who've been to the shows say Billy is doing a fantanstic job.
I don't know why people get so uppity about lineup changes in a band that's had over 20 members.
Not getting uppity. I wrote that comment right after hearing that Yes was gonna keep rolling despite Squire's passing. I didn't know he had given them his blessing or whatever. In my opinion, they haven't produced anything worth listening to in this century, so what do I care? Maybe my taste in music has changed. I still love to listen to 90% of the Yes catalog though. I don't listen to anything past the Talk album except for the Keystudio stuff. When Yes came through my neck of the woods playing albums like The Yes Album, Going For The One, and Close To The Edge in their entirety, I really wanted to see that but not without Jon Anderson. Playing albums like that in their entirety was just a gimmick, in my opinion, to fill seats at concerts. I can't blame 'em for wanting to sell tickets. Touring is the #1 way for bands to make money. Not cd sales, number of downloads, or royalties, so I shouldn't be surprised to see them touring until they look like Keith Richards. By the way, Steve Howe doesn't have far to go. I kid. Like I said, it's just my opinion. Peace.
+drewper73 If you haven't listened to anything past "Talk" save for "Keys" then you missed "Magnification" which is a fantastic album, worthy of any Yes fans' appreciation. If you haven't listened to it, I highly recommend you give it a try. This was also Jon Anderson's last studio album with Yes.
SilentWingsOfFreedom I do have the dvd that was recorded while they were on tour in support of "Magnification." I love it. Now that I think about it, I had that cd but I ended up trading it at a record store. "Bad Yes fan! Bad, bad, bad Yes fan!" haha... I also bought The Ladder when it came out and did the same thing with it. I guess I'm picky when it comes to any lineup changes other than the guys who played on the Union album: Anderson, Squire, Howe, Rabin, Kaye, Wakeman, Bruford, or White. Tony Levin can be the bassist for Yes any ol' time. I love his style and the Stick he plays. I like Patrick Moraz's style and I like the keyboardist on the Magnification dvd. I've also never really listened to all of the Drama album. I've heard Tormato but wasn't nuts about it.
That that is a great song from yes like mind drive and footprints music to heart of the sunrise
I really hope that Mr. Howe still enjoys playing Turn Of The Century! I deeply hope to bear witness to that sometime, someday, someway!.........!!!!!!!
David, your videos are an awesome treasure. So blessed tohave your interpretation of this wonderful music.
Perfect. Yes is so good.
Happy 66th Birthday, Rick Wakeman!!!
Always loved this song, so many different parts each brilliant in there own way
Just found You and I am impressed! Thank-You so much for your insight and the lyrics!!
Long time Yes fan who has seen them live 7 times in 3 configurations, love all of their music and the various artists who have been Yes. Saw Steve Howe twice with Asia because he really is one of my all time favorite guitarists.
My first time having the internet at home and I've been spending it watching your work!! Suburb!
Thanks vzqk for these beautiful slideshows, you really reflect the visuals of the music effectively. The Keys to Ascenscion albums are very underappreciated to me. They showcase Yes reflecting the weird beauty to be found in the world of the 1990s. I prefer Mind Drive to this in terms of how much I like it, but I have very strong memories of coming back from New Orleans on a high school band trip to Seattle by plane, leaving at dawn, and That, That Is was the soundtrack for most of the airport. It really works. Especially in a place like America. That was 3 years ago today, haven't been on a plane since then. Now I'm getting ready to fly to Edmonton tomorrow and do it again :)
Vzqk should receive awards for these videos!!!.
Great man, vzqk..! Respect for you, your videos and your favouriste artists... I love Yes and Genesis too!!
Wakeman, my oh my. Wakeman, this is why he is so great. Brilliance.
You and me,both.
I turn 50 today too.
Happy Birthday!!! :)
Igen!Ezt a hangszert így kell kezelni!!!!Imádom a fickót!
Happy 50 to the YES man!
Magnificent ♥️ I am one with the universe 💫
There is no Yes without Jon Anderson
is MIND DRIVE not an amazing testimony as well? True musical gifts to us forever, LOVE ALL THIS STUDIO FROM THIS ERA.... thank you for this video a blessing
Mind Drive has some nice parts, but also has some pedestrian melodies and repetitive music in relation to this song. I do recall Mind Drive got a good amount of love (more than That, That Is) when it came out, but now it seems that this song is recognized as the better of the two.
Live for the breaking free
Live for the breaking freedom
Long gone are the days of great music such as this stellar song!👍

How come I've never heard this song before????
