Honestly, my biggest problem with this is it doesn't look like it'll be comfy for when I'm singing loudly or shouting. It looks like it hugs a person's face to the point that moving your mouth a bunch would be very bothersome.
It's hard to really think of a better, socially-accepted, design for this. They could go for a look similar to Bane's mask, but that presents a problem of restricting your breathing.
If they combined this and a VR headset into a sick looking motorcycle helmet type thing where you're completely immersed in a game then yeah but those two should not be two separate pieces 💀
this is more like a "i live in my parents house and am not allowed to scream" product than a "i own a lot of extra money and want to prove my wealth in public" product
The office I work in has a sound box that you can move to during a call or meeting to be loud in there without disturbing others, but we only have one and I’m sure this is way cheaper. I want to speak loudly for the person I’m having a meeting with, but I don’t want to disturb my coworkers. I could totally see myself using this

The idea of having a private conversation like this isn't the worst thing in the world, I'm kinda hyper aware when people are listening to my calls and such, which can be off putting. But the design literally looks like a ball gag.
With COVID, it seems kind of interesting to model a microphone with a face mask design. If this was more inconspicuous, you could definitely get away with it and it would actually be quite nifty.
I actually agree. I’m often travelling for work, and I find myself talking about confidential matters regarding my company, and if it’s true that w/o context risks are minimum, to have a way to have private conversations…it would be cool. And if it became practice common areas would be mor quite 😂
to be any good it needs to cover the nose too at the bare minimum. Just like face masks the air and vibration from your voice goes out from your nose too. That's why you sound funny if you pinch close your nose while talking
the insurance call center my mother works for just bought a bunch of these and is now forcing people to sit two to a desk. No more concerns about customers overhearing other phone calls.

That noise would muffle other noises, effectively making it so you wouldn't hear what you shoot it at. Not sure if they ever finished the idea, but it was a think back in 2010-2012

I think the core idea definitely has merit. I know a streamer who had problems with playing horror games in stream because their neighbors would get mad.
Counterpoint: a lot of equipment in videogames looks stupid even in futuristic settings, you often have to sacrifice fashion for utility or vice versa. Reality and fiction aren't too far apart.
@@blujaebird The problem with fanny packs is that pockets are more convenient and backpacks are more versatile. If something is small enough for pockets, those are definitely the better choice. If they're too big for pockets, you're going to need a backpack for other cases anyways so just use that. Aside from extremely niche scenarios, when would you want to buy and use a fanny pack over either your pockets or a backpack?
The idea sounds nice for the late night gaming sessions, because I always forget to keep it down and I'd wager the neighbors next to my apartment are probably not the happiest about it.

3ft gummy worms are cool and all, but this gizmo has actually existed since the 1940s and is called the stenomask. it has seen regular use every day since its invention in the 1940s. see the courtroom stenographer talks into it as the courtroom trial stuff is happening and then later they type out a transcript based on it rather than some jank-ass keyboard. it's super useful! this device doesn't even credit the original though, presumably because it's not cutting edge that they saw one of these ancient devices and put bluetooth and a couple straps on it.
The absurd design aside , the concept itself is nice for those that really need it such as loud households or having to talk for a work meeting while your s.o or your child is resting , even if it's just for gaming the intention seems good on the surface to have the freedom to converse without bothering others around you. But they should really work on the design more...making it look more like a facemask would work since it would be really customizable then and bane's mask seems like a banger idea from charlie.
The reason for its design is because it has a large sponge-like cover on the inside that helps to muffle your voice so it doesn't sound all distorted, as well as to serve as an easy to remove and clean part, since your mouth is undoubtedly going to be spraying all kinds of germs all over that thing. You can't really achieve that with a mace-mask design.
Callcenteres/Support can really benefit from this because whenever you either get a call or need to call support you can hear people talking in the background...

As someone who games at night and tried not to disturb my sleeping family this doesn’t seem like the worst idea. But the design makes me rather just buy a couple foam pads and sound proof my room
Throat mics are already a thing. You can basically whisper and still come through. This could also work with a more normal face mask with a mic in it, to let you talk with some privacy, maybe you couldn't shout into it and expect privacy but the cloth itself would muffle you a bit for normal speaking volume.
why do that when the stenomask exists already and has existed since the 1940s? it's not a new technology at all, the people behind it have simply invented putting straps on the thing!
Charlie you gotta buy one and record a Podcast episode with it. If the sound quality is amazing it might be great for people that don't have a recording room.

If I wasn't broke I would already have ordered one of these. Not only am I self conscious about being heard when I record a video, but there is NO noise isolation where I live. Literally I can hear my neighbors talking right now and they live across the street. I do not like to be heard when I'm gaming or recording it affects the way that I talk and triggers my anxiety to know that they can hear me. I don't mind being laughed at on the internet but it's embarrassing when I say something and then I can hear my neighbors talking shit about me and laughing. One time I was having fun not thinking about it and someone threw a rock at my window. I wish it didn't affect me but I can't help it. For me this is an ideal product and I hope they're still around when I manage to save enough money to order one.
The worst part of having that combined with a full VR headset on is that somebody might walk into you and think you got the weirdest Cyberkink 2099 while you won't even notice them looking at you. You will maybe never know this but the person will always have the mental image of your cyborg face. It's even worse if you actually did something kinky alone in your room.
i've heard of stenomasks, the tool used in courtrooms everywhere. it's this exact product but not bluetooth because that would be dumb and also not strapped to a face because that would also be dumb. courtroom stenographers use them to transcribe court proceedings faster than typing! it's super useful.

As someone who was studying music as vocalist, this actually wouldve been so helpful when practicing at home or at school in a practice room. I was always super self-conscious of people hearing me while I was practicing so something like this actually might've taken that stress away from me

Except that has an actual use, because if you're on your way to an audition and have to do vocal warm ups in public, you can actually do full voiced warm ups, instead of ineffective, under your breath ones you might do so you don't disturb others
There's no reason you can't also use this for that purpose. Just because there's a microphone in it doesn't mean that it can ONLY be used for calls. if you need noise muffling, then put it on without connecting the microphone.

I've wanted an item like this for several years - I game at 1-5am, in a full household, because of the timezone shift with my friends. Making it so you can play and converse normally in the middle of the night is legitimately useful. The spitguard thing is a notable criticism.
Yeah hygiene would be my biggest issue. Your breath has natural moisture, and in a small (tiny really...) enclosed space like that, it wouldn’t take long for it to become musty and disgusting. You’d be breathing your own manky breath over and over... sounds grim.
uhhh well...maybe like instead of a muzzle lets make it a mask you absolute dolt. imagine a neoprene type mask that you just wear like a normal facemask that picks up only your voice at a reasonable volume maybe the microphone input not so directly on top of the mouth, and the main dampening bit will be achieved by wearing a mask cause I'm soft spoken asf and when I'm wearing a mask no one can hear me.
I think the concept for this is actually really good, but I think it would be less ugly if it was made into a mask instead of this weird protruding box… and then trying to keep it clean would be a nightmare, especially since a lot of people say they’d love to use this for gaming, which means they’d be breathing into it for hours a day every day, so I can’t imagine it’d be good for the electronic bits or very sanitary either. If it were tweaked a little though I could see this being really useful!
Agree. Think of what’s the most common mask these days - a regular surgical one. Seems like common sense to model it off that so you don’t look so out of place.
Yeah other than the appearance this actually has a few super valuable uses, I personally have a lot of trouble speaking to my doctors/lawyers/anything important, on the phone at home because my parents will deliberately eavesdrop on everything.

You can control your sneezes pretty easily. If you feel one coming you just have to push the tip of your nose up for a second or two and it will be suppressed

It seems really heavy though and could strain your neck, and even if it isn’t the inside of the thing will eventually become close to your body temperature as your constantly breathing and I don’t imaging there’s fans inside the thing, plus what Charlie mentioned with the spit will make it horrible to wear for extended periods of time. That's actually a really good idea, it'd be easy to put on, weight distribution could be better, and more importantly, the extra material could be used to hold more powerful hardware. Kind of makes you wonder why it hasn't been tried yet, because on paper it seems pretty good

There are a few design flaws but I do like the idea of this product for legal and contractual reasons I can't really soundproof my house other than putting carpets and the neighbors have complained about the noise already. I am certainly considering this as an option

It was designed in Japan for the Eastern world because families there live in a small apartment (approximately 200 - 400 square feet). Even if I talk quietly, it is still very loud at night.
As a smooth brained VR gamer (not metaverse nonsense) who stays in hotels for work multiple nights a week I'll admit my anxiety over bothering other guests through the thin walls has me at least intrigued in this. So I feel like you might be exaggerating it's uselessness because of it's memeable design.
If its useful for you and you want it you should get it. You shouldn't be shamed out of doing what's good for yourself. Also I bet every single big name mocking this product has the privilege of living alone or with a SO
For sure, I know it looks absolutely ridiculous, but it does what it advertises. I have quite a few friends in Japan who have ordered this and tested it out at events and say it works. I play a lot of VR with friends, and end up being way too loud because I'm kinda in another world for a little. I see why people would be bashing the look of it, but being considerate of neighbors, dorm mates, or even family is not a stupid purchase. I don't understand why it's getting so much hate for a product that genuinely solves a problem.

Actually something like this is a really good idea if implemented correctly. My gaming studio also has a friend's setup in there. We play together but we're struggling to tune our mics correctly so voices don't get picked up by the other mic

My roommate sleeps in the next room over and regardless of how much soundproof padding I put, sound will still get through due to the shotty apartments. Doors too high, things walls, windows that are uninsulated, etc. If this was cost effective, I would definitely buy it tbh.

I’m an attorney and while there are several ways court reporters can create records of hearings these days, some use something like this, except this version is cordless. I guess what they use is referred to as a stenomask? I could also see some applications for my work. Sometimes I need to have confidential conversations with clients when others (judge, prosecutor, public, etc) are around… but I couldn’t ever bring myself to strap this on my face in public 😂
Normal adults wouldn't get this, but parents would totally force their children to use these so they play quietly, and japanese audiences would totally rock these since they already are used to wearing masks and care a lot about quietness.

The worst product I've ever seen legitimately advertised was when(I believe) Lysol sold an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser, which in of itself is not a bad idea if it were marketed towards people with certain disabilities or severe arthritis who might have trouble getting sanitizer out of a bottle, but they advertised it as a way to not get germs on your hands. You know, the same hands that are going to be sanitized after you rub sanitizer on them? Just a really weird marketing ploy and I've never seen them anywhere so I guess it didn't sell well.
I would definitely rock this if I was gaming and talking with friends online at night and had someone in my house that was sleeping at the same time. Would never take this outside tho.

The office I work in has a sound box that you can move to during a call or meeting to be loud in there without disturbing others, but we only have one and I’m sure this is way cheaper. I want to speak loudly for the person I’m having a meeting with, but I don’t want to disturb my coworkers. I could totally see myself using this

3ft gummy worms are cool and all, but this gizmo has actually existed since the 1940s and is called the stenomask. it has seen regular use every day since its invention in the 1940s. see the courtroom stenographer talks into it as the courtroom trial stuff is happening and then later they type out a transcript based on it rather than some jank-ass keyboard. it's super useful! this device doesn't even credit the original though, presumably because it's not cutting edge that they saw one of these ancient devices and put bluetooth and a couple straps on it.

The absurd design aside , the concept itself is nice for those that really need it such as loud households or having to talk for a work meeting while your s.o or your child is resting , even if it's just for gaming the intention seems good on the surface to have the freedom to converse without bothering others around you. But they should really work on the design more...making it look more like a facemask would work since it would be really customizable then and bane's mask seems like a banger idea from charlie.
The reason for its design is because it has a large sponge-like cover on the inside that helps to muffle your voice so it doesn't sound all distorted, as well as to serve as an easy to remove and clean part, since your mouth is undoubtedly going to be spraying all kinds of germs all over that thing. You can't really achieve that with a mace-mask design.

Throat mics are already a thing. You can basically whisper and still come through. This could also work with a more normal face mask with a mic in it, to let you talk with some privacy, maybe you couldn't shout into it and expect privacy but the cloth itself would muffle you a bit for normal speaking volume.

If I wasn't broke I would already have ordered one of these. Not only am I self conscious about being heard when I record a video, but there is NO noise isolation where I live. Literally I can hear my neighbors talking right now and they live across the street. I do not like to be heard when I'm gaming or recording it affects the way that I talk and triggers my anxiety to know that they can hear me. I don't mind being laughed at on the internet but it's embarrassing when I say something and then I can hear my neighbors talking shit about me and laughing. One time I was having fun not thinking about it and someone threw a rock at my window. I wish it didn't affect me but I can't help it. For me this is an ideal product and I hope they're still around when I manage to save enough money to order one.
The worst part of having that combined with a full VR headset on is that somebody might walk into you and think you got the weirdest Cyberkink 2099 while you won't even notice them looking at you. You will maybe never know this but the person will always have the mental image of your cyborg face. It's even worse if you actually did something kinky alone in your room.

Except that has an actual use, because if you're on your way to an audition and have to do vocal warm ups in public, you can actually do full voiced warm ups, instead of ineffective, under your breath ones you might do so you don't disturb others

I've wanted an item like this for several years - I game at 1-5am, in a full household, because of the timezone shift with my friends. Making it so you can play and converse normally in the middle of the night is legitimately useful.

Yeah hygiene would be my biggest issue. Your breath has natural moisture, and in a small (tiny really...) enclosed space like that, it wouldn’t take long for it to become musty and disgusting. You’d be breathing your own manky breath over and over... sounds grim.
uhhh well...maybe like instead of a muzzle lets make it a mask you absolute dolt. imagine a neoprene type mask that you just wear like a normal facemask that picks up only your voice at a reasonable volume maybe the microphone input not so directly on top of the mouth, and the main dampening bit will be achieved by wearing a mask cause I'm soft spoken asf and when I'm wearing a mask no one can hear me.

I think the concept for this is actually really good, but I think it would be less ugly if it was made into a mask instead of this weird protruding box… and then trying to keep it clean would be a nightmare, especially since a lot of people say they’d love to use this for gaming, which means they’d be breathing into it for hours a day every day, so I can’t imagine it’d be good for the electronic bits or very sanitary either. If it were tweaked a little though I could see this being really useful!

I have parents who chime into every slight discussion I have. I'd love to still be able to talk to my friends without big mother listening in on me. Other times my friends are just wanting to do stuff at ungodly hours when everyone in my house is asleep. I think the product captured a niche of people who live with others and don't wanna be inconsiderate to others

It seems really heavy though and could strain your neck, and even if it isn’t the inside of the thing will eventually become close to your body temperature as your constantly breathing and I don’t imaging there’s fans inside the thing, plus what Charlie mentioned with the spit will make it horrible to wear for extended periods of time. Honestly the idea is solid, but I don’t think it works in practice.

There are a few design flaws but I do like the idea of this product for legal and contractual reasons I can't really soundproof my house other than putting carpets and the neighbors have complained about the noise already. I am certainly considering this as an option

It was designed in Japan for the Eastern world because families there live in a small apartment (approximately 200 - 400 square feet). Even if I talk quietly, it is still very loud at night.
As a smooth brained VR gamer (not metaverse nonsense) who stays in hotels for work multiple nights a week I'll admit my anxiety over bothering other guests through the thin walls has me at least intrigued in this.

For sure, I know it looks absolutely ridiculous, but it does what it advertises. I have quite a few friends in Japan who have ordered this and tested it out at events and say it works. I play a lot of VR with friends, and end up being way too loud because I'm kinda in another world for a little. I see why people would be bashing the look of it, but being considerate of neighbors, dorm mates, or even family is not a stupid purchase. I don't understand why it's getting so much hate for a product that genuinely solves a problem.

Actually something like this is a really good idea if implemented correctly. My gaming studio also has a friend's setup in there. We play together but we're struggling to tune our mics correctly so voices don't get picked up by the other mic

My roommate sleeps in the next room over and regardless of how much soundproof padding I put, sound will still get through due to the shotty apartments. Doors too high, things walls, windows that are uninsulated, etc. If this was cost effective, I would definitely buy it tbh.

I’m an attorney and while there are several ways court reporters can create records of hearings these days, some use something like this, except this version is cordless. I guess what they use is referred to as a stenomask?
I could also see some applications for my work. Sometimes I need to have confidential conversations with clients when others (judge, prosecutor, public, etc) are around… but I couldn’t ever bring myself to strap this on my face in public 😂

The worst product I've ever seen legitimately advertised was when(I believe) Lysol sold an automatic hand sanitizer dispenser, which in of itself is not a bad idea if it were marketed towards people with certain disabilities or severe arthritis who might have trouble getting sanitizer out of a bottle, but they advertised it as a way to not get germs on your hands. You know, the same hands that are going to be sanitized after you rub sanitizer on them? Just a really weird marketing ploy and I've never seen them anywhere so I guess it didn't sell well.
