Fun fact: The scene when Danny and the T-Birds see Sandy for the first time as a hardcore made-over Pink Lady at the senior carnival towards the end of the film, was their true reactions. The actors were not allowed to see Olivia Newton-John in her made-over bad girl image, so the shocked looked they had on their faces was their real reactions.

Wrong... The audio was recorded on the same day he died and the Elvis line was always in the song. Elvis was planned to be the Angel in the movie but turned down the part. So they put the scene in as a substitute (not sure if it was in the original stage production though). The fact that he died on the same day reportedly weirded out all of the cast members that did the recording.

The "random man" who performs Beauty School Dropout is Frankie Avalon who was a teen idol in the 50's. This movie came out in the 70's but was largely geared to those who had been young in the 50's so they would've recognized him definitely. I think Frenchy refers to him in some way earlier as well, but can't remember.

He lettered in track (basically he did really good/went to meets probably won some races too) that's why he's not wearing his leather jacket at the end he's wearing his letterman jacket.

so my theory about how danny acts around sandy is that he's never experienced a proper love in his life. he's used to being a tough guy who has to act machismo around people in order to be respected. but sandy shakes that, she makes him feel soft and empathetic and so he doesnt know how to portray that side of him so he continues to act the only way he knows how which is why he continues to fuck up. he's not used to someone rejecting everything he's been conditioned to know as normal.

Went to Australia to visit some of my Mum's side of the family and whilst I was there, I kind of started dating my cousin's best friend. We were there for a month. Had a first kiss at sunset and everything 🤣. We "broke up" the day before I left because doing long distance would have been too hard (14 hour time difference), and still talk to this day via the power of social media. I say "broke up" in quotations because we never really became boyfriend and girlfriend officially. He's currently single and still friends with my cousin, and jokingly refers to me as his first love. If I remember correctly, and I could be super wrong cause it’s been a while, but the movie was written by a couple of guys based on their own high school experience in the 50’s. So it’s not hard to see how it’s aged since then from that perspective of the Greaser’s all being bros and the girls usually being very catty until the end. In a lot of media over the years we tend to see women portrayed that way around each other more often then not, even when it wouldn’t really make sense. I grew up when Aaron Carter cheating on Hilarie Duff with Lindsay Lohan or whatever was a big deal, and even at that age was wondering why no one was pointing the finger at him 🤷🏻‍♀️
Even in the 70’s when it first came out on Broadway I’m sure there were differences in how it was viewed vs how it would have been viewed in the 50’s itself and even more-so now but there’s also a lot of things that can be related to as well as just a touch point on how we’ve evolved over time or even haven’t in some cases, how things like trying to slip and “aspirin” into someone’s drink has been a thing since before some of us were born. Or even changing for a guy you don’t realize isn’t really worthy of you, which in context it’s still high school with your first real boyfriend or girlfriend so you never really know until you go through it.

exactly!!! when i saw this movie when i was like twelve, i hated it. i thought she changed for him and that was the message. but they both grew and made changes and compromised because they were willing to work for one another and i think there's something beautiful in that. to say "omg she didn't need to change for a man!!" and to say that the ONLY message of the film is to change for a man is really over-simplifying things lol i'm glad i rewatched it when i got older and could see the other layers. like with ferris bueler. i was like "omg this dumb bad kid is skipping school and being a menace." now i see it as "omg this is a film about a boy who is struggling DEEPLY and his friends spend the entire film reaching out to him in love and support and that's what the film is about." it's fun to go back and rewatch things as you get older and see them with a deeper mindset than before.

Hmm I would like to argue that Danny made more than enough mistakes with Sandy, and yet, SHE was always the one who tried to reach out to Danny (as if she was the one in the wrong??). Yeah sure Danny put on the jacket at the end, but his effort was very miniscule compared to Sandy. I mean she picked up smoking LMAO AND he took off the letterman jacket right after she showed up!! I would agree that they BOTH changed for each other IF the movie showed Danny making an equal amount of effort to change. But it seems more one sided to me, and THAT'S what bugged me

@@SophiaPhannn Fair argument, but I'm gonna counter it and say ... just as Frenchy so eloquently stated, "Men are rats, listen to me, they're fleas on rats, worse than that, they're amoebas on fleas on rats." And that's a man!
Teenage boys, 'cause as ridiculous as it is all of these characters are high school age, including Danny. He's a dumb 18-year-old boy. Perhaps, like Sandy, I'm too forgiving of Danny's mistakes. I like to think that he learned from those mistakes and they lived happily ever after.
It's the 50s so they probably got married soon after high school and punched out a few kids before the age of 25. Jinkies!
I can't even say to look up the deleted scenes for the 'fill in the blanks' between the dance and the drive-in cause they do not exist. But I imagine Danny called her the next day, apologised, and then asked her on a date to the drive-in. Sandy being 'Hopelessly Devoted' gave him yet another chance cause young love... A scene like that would be nice, but then the movie would be as long as Titanic, so you're forced to use your imagination to fill in the holes.
P.S. It's hard to dance with a cardigan on! haha
P.S.S. No matter what, it's a great and classic flick and we can all agree on that ONJ stole the show!

I think the “Grease Live!” with Julianne Hough, Aaron Tveit, & Vanessa Hudgens is a lot better because the actors look a tad more realistically their age (everyone looks SO old in this movie except for Olivia) & they mess with the ending to make it a bit less of her just changing for him. Also Carly Rae Jepsen plays Frenchie amazingly in it.
A better more fun & silly musical with Olivia Newton John is “Xanadu.” Yes it’s decisive, but I think it’s amazing in its disco-ness. It’s also not adults pretending to be teenagers. 😹

Then Danny can be shown making friends on the track team and dismantling his notions of toxic masculinity.

LOL! There used to be an over-the-counter medication for psoriasis and the slogan in their TV commercials was, "Do YOU have heartbreak of psoriasis?". The 50s were before my time, but I think they must have still been using that slogan in the 60s or 70s, because I remember it. Anyway, that's why Frenchie asks Sandy if she has psoriasis since she mentioned heartbreak.
The guardian angel wasn't just any "random ass man"; he was Frankie Avalon who was famous in the 50s for his teen beach movies with Annette Funicello and had several hit records. They cast a lot of stars from the 50s as adults in the movie.
I'm not sure, but I think the dance they were doing when you asked might have been the Jitterbug (though I think it originated in the 40s).
The significance to the waitresses was, first, the white haired waitress is Joan Blondell, an actress who was at her peak in movies in that time, so they probably had to pay her more than most cameos, so they probably wanted to get their money's worth. And second, the thin, dark haired waitress on the left is John's older sister, Ellen Travolta. Plus I think it's kinda sweet that the waitresses know the kids well enough that they're rooting for them.

I didn't see it as Sandy changing for Danny. I saw it as for while, she felt unsure about herself feeling like a bit of an outsider among their group of friends and wanted to show there was more to her than the sweet, wholesome good girl everybody saw her as. I think by transforming into the greaser girl, she got a chance to show another facet to herself, expressing her sexy side and inner bad girl that she probably had deeply rooted in her all along. That is confirmed in the reprise of the Sandra Dee song. Plus, during their song "You're the One That I Want" she is the one that is sort of calling the shots, insisting that he shape up, get his act together and change some of his immature ways, because she wants a man not a boy and basically, she has standards. Danny is aware of all of this and agrees he needs to get himself in order if he wants another chance with her. Lasty, I believe Danny taking off his letterman jacket shows that he will never be a preppy jock just like Sandy taking off her greaser jacket and then not knowing what to do with her cigarette at first shows she will never really be a greaser girl.

26:51 I never really thought too much about this reprise until I saw Jojo Siwa & Jenna Johnson do a Foxtrot performance to it on Dancing with the Stars last year. The emotions they gave the characters as they danced made me really appreciate this part in the film/musical. This moment was actually a very beautiful climax of Sandy & Frenchie's friendship. It's not flashy and hyped up like the ending where Sandy & Danny make their relationship official...it's a quietly powerful show of non-judgmental and supportive friendship. I think they'll be friends for decades; long after Sandy inevitably gets sick of Danny's immaturity.
I am still annoyed that it signifies Sandy basically deciding to change to meet Danny almost the entire way instead of him committing to meeting her in the middle, tho. Frankly, if he fell for her as she is at the start of the movie; it was unnecessary for her to "change" anyway. HE was the one presenting false and misleading images of his personality and vibes over summer. Imo, the onus was on him for any changing just becuase Sandy never misled him on who she was when he fell for her; unlike him.
He may have been less guarded and more genuine when away from his friends over the summer, so maybe not all of that summer romance was deceptive. But it's clear he still prioritizes how he appears to his friends over being mature enough to be open and genuine with her. He was SO CLOSE. It's disappointing that he immediately reverted when he saw her makeover. He could have easily appreciated her efforts and still stuck with his..... Anyway, she changed her vibes for the sake of his aesthetic, and he had temporary experience with change, when you get down to it. I wouldn't care so much if it was more for herself than mostly for the sake of "keeping" him.

    A) Got so caught up in the competition aspect he didn’t realize Sandy was eliminated, or did realize it but winning had already become his goal

Fun fact: The school dance was one of the most difficult sequences to shoot. It was shot during the summer, in a school gymnasium with no A/C, under super hot stage lights, across the street from a sausage factory. The actor playing Putzie ended up wearing the two Hershey bars he had up his sleeves. While the actor playing Sonny was hospitalized for either heat stroke or heat exhaustion and was out of commission for several days. Also during the race at Thunder Road, the cast had to wrap their feet in plastic wrap due to the stagnant water of the LA River. The only person who forgot was the director who was hospitalized with a viral infection. Also the actress playing Cha-Cha either had or was recovering from pneumonia at the time.

To the comment about changing for a person, "summer Danny" and "school Danny" are symbolism for the diversity of human expression vs expectations. In life we have our work, personal, and interpersonal selves. No everyone we meet or know has access to the fully scope of an individual's expression. For Danny, it's balancing the parts of himself that mean the most to him. From the motor club to T-birds to Sandy, they all have difference expectation of a person and for a "kid" in school, it's highly relatable. Sandy, not only express similar dynamic but the social plight of an immigrant trying to find balance in a foreign country that not only aligns with her nature but her desires expression. Sandy is kind even to those who would belittle her but she accepts that part of herself. She not tries to be with the "simple jock" as expectation of the perfect pair but that too didn't resonate with her because Danny. He was her "perfect" match, the sweet summer lover and the school bad boy who kept himself guarded. He's loyal to the people he cares about and tries to find a place in his life for all of them. That's why Sandy dressed up as the Bad girl, She didn't change because it was still her. It's how she wanted Danny to see more of her personality, she's soft and kind but tough. She too is dedicated to him and wants him to match his effort. She literally has everyone drooling over her but tells Danny, you're the only one I want and willing to put herself fully out there for that. Danny never once asked Sandy to change how she dressed, thought or behaved. It's because Danny loved her regardless. Sandy did imply Danny has to change but in a reasonable fashion... Don't be afraid to show the world that you care about me. That's all they wanted from each other, it wasn't a battle of how they have to express themselves. They were already complicating that part all on their own. They felt inadequate because of the social expectation of their peers. Sandy changed to be Pink Lady worthy, a standard Danny never set for her and if anything try to keep Sandy away from them. Also, the look Rizzo and Danny shared at the bonfire was because Rizzo got her revenge on Danny. Danny and her have a past and for some reason not explained, it didn't work out. Rizzo was hurt by this and constantly trying to have Danny "realize what he missed out on." She didn't realize it was just incompatibility not anything wrong with her or him. That's why there's that tension in the diner and why she was so happy to see Danny and Sandy have that moment. She wanted to expose Danny as a fake sweetheart good guy especially since Sandy is "too pure." It was a misery loves company type of moment for her that with time she learned that Danny isn't fake. That's a part of his expectation and the part that's a sweetheart is real and alive for Sandy. That Sandy wasn't just sheltered and could become Jaded like her but Sandy is a truly kind and caring person despite how people treated her because that's true to her nature. That's why and how they settled everything within the group and accepted Danny and Sandy are a great pairing because they genuinely care about each other. Rizzo and Kenickie are better suited because of their same style of tough "i can't cry in front of you" /" you're my best friend and I can't hug you but I want to" type personalities. volatile tempers. That's why Rizzo help Sandy with the "cig" toss to "be cool" but Danny only wanted Sandy long before Sandy even decided to "change." People don't change their nature or true self expression, they only change their behaviors. Sandy and Danny are still themselves but only changed how the rest of the world could see them, the fuller scope of their personality.

I asked my grandma about this scene. She acknowledged my feelings but she mentioned that a lot of guys were like that, under the impression that they could persuade a woman if they were persistent. She says that it was something she experienced herself and it was seen more as playful than as assault. She told me that she's glad consent is taken more seriously now but she's not surprised that a movie set in this time portrays him that way. Then she made a dirty joke about some of the men she dated and I wanted to puke.

The waitress that said "That's Danny and Sandy" is Ellen Travolta, John Travolta's sister.

The waitress on the left is John's sister. The little blonde waitress (the one who has the scene with Frenchie "your hair looks like an easter egg") is Joan Blondell, a major star from the early 1930s in what I believe is her final role.

Catching all the innuendos as an adult lol. Surprised this was shown in school as much as it was.

OMG! Girl Phan can sing! I'm new to your channel so I didn't know.
This was a great tribute to Olivia. She was a huge part of my childhood. Very few teen boys didn't have a poster on their bedroom wall of her back then. I grew up with her there, so loosing her is very close to losing a childhood friend.
Thank you for this watch along! I really enjoyed your reaction to it. And your singing is on point.

Idk why women think Danny is a cocky jerk, maybe you have to be a guy to pick it up but throughout the movie he's very self conscious and cares far too much for his friends' opinion of him, him acting like a jerk is him pretending to be "cool"
