This was the year after their win, and were on as Guest Champs. I always hated how the judges kidnapped their guest performance! All in all, I prefer the new remake for many other reasons -- it's so much fuller and balanced, and oh, so tight!
Agreed! I found it interesting that the year before, when Pentatonix came back (during Home Free's season), the judges did not take the stage. I'd be curious to know who's idea it was...
I absolutely agree that the show was all about Austin and Tim but I felt it was such a shame that Rob and Chris were pushed into the background. I absolutely adore Rob's smooth sound and people always downplay Chris. I love Home free because there are 5 Mega talents and no Mega egos. It is always what will advance the sound the furthest. ❤❤❤❤ And oh yes Adam is an absolute freak!
Thanks for the double feature! I had not seen this version from the "Sing Off". The judges & host kind of took over. I much prefer Home Free on their own. I love this great classic song from Ben E. King back in 1961. The Home Free guys did an awesome version as always. Love their arrangement on this cover. Great vocal leads by Austin & Rob. Tim's bass really stands out for me in this one. And Adam's tasteful vocal percussion is on point.
I am always surprised at the artists you do not know....lol. Jewel is amazing and definitely worth checking out. Nick Lachey's boy band was popular at about the same time as N'Sync and Backstreet Boys. There was actually a Christmas special with members of all of them as well as a couple from Boys 2 Men that I saw either this past Christmas or the year before. This video was from an episode of the Sing Off the year after Home Free won.... t because Ben Folds was a judge when they won....not Stump
Since Shawn Stockman was such a fan of Austin's during the Sing Off, it was great seeing him join in with HF and the other judges, then standing next to Austin at the end.
When I first saw this, it immediately rocketed to number 2 on my favorite Home Free songs list. I think it's one of the best things they've done. The bell tones behind Rob. The harmonies. The perfect percussion. So gorgeous. I didn't really care for the one from Sing-off. That one seemed like the judges were trying to prove that they could keep up with Home Free. Sorry. Didn't actually do that.
Adam does an amazing heartbeat, so that is my guess. And they probably double tracked the water drop. And he got to sing, too!! I am regularly amazed at how well they can meld, given how different they can sound from each other. Rob and Austin together - oh my. They handed off lead seamlessly, too. And that last "chord" was pure Home Free.
I'm so glad that Ben E. King's iconic song has been brought back to life for new generations to appreciate. No theatrics, no glitz in their new release - just a beautiful song, with terrific singing, harmonies & beatboxing. If you haven't yet seen Austin's originals "Remember My Name" or the audio "I'll go first" (the latter on Austin's channel) - you're missing wonderful stuff! Thanks for playing this & your comments.
@@nancyholter5646 I only heard that one once or twice, and I wasn't in a situation when I could really listen to the lyrics....but I did like the song. I have to really give it my full attention.
Their new version is so very incredible! They have come so far! I can never get enough of them. I am sure Ben E. King would be so very proud! Love your reaction!
Thank you for this reaction. I love the comparisons, it shows the difference between the “show” and the versatile, well put together version that is pure HF. I love that they selflessly share the spotlight. Forever a Home Fry!❤❤
Enjoy your HF reactions so much! I’ve heard that Austin was first attracted to HF by Rob’s voice, so I’m sure he would agree with you. I LOVE it when those 2 sing together “whenever you’re in trouble…”
I absolutely adore the Ben E. King version of this song but I think I might prefer the Home Free version, at least the 2023 version. The Sing Off version felt very much like...ok, if I say "MeatLoaf and Friends" does anyone know what the heck I mean? Because it felt like "Home Free and Friends"...almost like they were an after thought. Finding out through the premiere chat that this was the year after they had won makes a LOT of sense. Don't worry about not knowing 98 degrees, I believe (again, from the premiere chat) that they were bigger in the US and a late 90s, early 2000s boyband - so, you know, when you were 6-10 years old...maybe not your thing! They were in my own era of "not into boybands because that's too mainstream" thing so I had no idea who they were! LOL Thank you for this double reaction DJ, I really love the way you do this without comparing the artist to themselves too much. It is very respectful and I know that I appreciate that fact. This was a great reaction, you always put a smile on my face 🙂#HerdMind
This is my favorite track on their new album. We are even treated to all five of them singing in that last verse until Adam starts beatboxing again. Great reaction as usual.
Home Free took an already great song and did their magic on it and made it spectacular. So beautiful it gives me that electric shivers feeling. Best cover on the album as far as I'm concerned. I find myself listening to it over and over. The performance with the judges was just meh. Home Frees' version hits right to the heart. Didn't need anything but Home Free because they are platinum talent all on their own.. Highlighting just 2 of the guys on the show defeats the very reason they are so phenomenal. The fact that their strength is in how broad, varied and unique each of their talents are and together they are a power house.. Adam is capable of some of the most unique and creative sounds that are musically genius in the context of the songs. His heartbeat sounds and water drop are prime examples. If you notice, the water sounds come when the lyrics reference the sea. He's very clever. Great reaction.
I agree with you 100% DJ. First one was too gimmicky even though HF killed the background and you could really hear Tim. Thank you for hearing the water drop….I’m assuming it’s Adam (I don’t know how he does it). One of the few reactors to hear not only the water drop but also comment on Tim’s low notes. Love this one. Those harmonies are exquisite. Loved the bell tones and the slowed down part near the end. Good one DJ!!!😍🥰
Let's just take a minute to realize how difficult it would be to do the synchronized bell tones while all of these famous singers are coming onto stage to sing & the crowd cheering. Omg, the distractions!👏👏👏 And they could have layered in the water drop sound. So, who knows.
They multitrack. That's how Adam Rupp was able to beatbox AND 'poit!' at the same time. Also, those insanely high bell-tones are probably Austin and Rob, so they had to have multi-tracked those as well.
The song became all about the judges singing😢 They didn't do this to PTX when they returned the 1st show of the season following their win. The newest judge just did scream-singing.🤪 EDIT: loved hearing Tim's bass, Adam's percussion & the lovely HF harmonies in the background which are wonderfully front and center of HF's remake released a couple months ago.
THANK YOU 👍‼️…I agree with completely ‼️‼️😡….i thought it was a collab…… Hmmm 😡…. Kidnapping the performance was Tacky ‼️ I love Home Free’s performance waaaay BETTER 💗🔥💗‼️
The one with the judges is way too busy for my taste. It was a much better listening experience for me with the newer one. I do enjoy seeing others takes on it though
I have to admit that I was a little disappointed that Home Free didn’t either get to sing Stand By Me by themselves on the Sing Off, or give them a song to sing by themselves. At least towards the end the guys were able to step in line with the judges and Austin got to sing at the end. It seems like the show gave a little more attention to Pentatonix. They got to sing by themselves as guests on the finale of the show when Home Free won. They did get to sing with Jewel, though. As far as the newer rendition by Home Free, it’s incredible. I love it!
Jewel and Home Free did Have Yourself A Marry Little Christmas. And it was great Jewel was out front and the boys were the instruments and harmony. The judges sang with other groups songs during the 2014 season. They tryed to keep it fair between the groups. This was the year after Home Free won they were guest champions . Voice play won that year in 2014. 2012 PXT, 2013 HF, 2014 VP. The three best accapella groups won three years in a row. My opinion of the winners are 2013 HF, 2014 VP, 2012 PXT.
Agreed. The Sing-Off version was ... a poor attempt to have the previous season's winner but gimmicked with the judges. HF looked like the producers had an afterthought. (Not their performance, but have they were treated -- back row, backup vocals, short verse...) Anyway, I do love their 2023 version; it's beautiful!
You should also check out their even earlier version from 2009 (before Tim and Austin). The bass is Elliot Robinson and the high tenor is original member, Matt Atwood. Rob has the entire lead for this version. Stand By Me (album: Kickin’ It Old School) - ua-cam.com/video/N_kJ55FdNkQ/v-deo.htmlsi=FbJtuhCAK5clRo2K
That popping sound can be done by basically starting with your lips closed and then opening them quickly while softly breathing in. At least that's how I do it. It's kind of an air pressure thing.
This performance was not in season four, the season that Home Free won The Sing Off. This performance was from season five where Home Free was showing up as the reigning champ. It wasn't part of the competition. That is why Patrick is singing with them. Patrick replaced Ben Folds as one of the coaches in season five.
Just in case nobody has said yet in the comments, it's pronounced phonetically Nick La - Shay, with the accent on the second syllable, just so you know. I'm not a huge fan of his, but it's okay! He did well. As usual, love your reactions and love how you're so authentic every time. PS I feel very strongly that Rob Lundquist and Adam Rupp are the most well-rounded musicians I've heard in a long time. The water drop sound and the heartbeat is Adam Rupp. Also, I will have to look it up again, but I'm pretty sure that the "Stand By Me" performance with the the judges that you watched was the year after Home Free won and then they came back to sing a song with the judges. I may be wrong, but I think that's how it went.
You call them water drops, but they sound like bell tones to me. If you listen closely to the first version, you can hear them. Easier to hear in the upgraded version!
I don't remember this from the show and I think it might have been like when they were trying to get the next season pumped up to be picked up for a full run. Austin's hair wasn't that long during their run for the gold. Also Patrick Stump (???) not sure who that is, Ben Folds was the 3rd judge when the guys won. My local channels - well semi local - didn't pick the show up for that next attempt at coming back so I don't remember it at all. I agree tho that it seemed like the judges were the focal point in that clip.
I’m afraid that the judges hogging the stage detracted from the Sing Off performance. Home Free’s solo performance is much better. Rob’s singing is superior to that of the judges. Adam’s beatboxing is fantastic. Austin and Tim? Fill in the superlative.
Imo the judges and host egos are too big to share the spotlight with lesser known artists. I'm guessing it was NOT home frees call on it. Also the sing off was a competition show they wanted to win so they did what they had to do even if they maybe didn't agree.
This was the year after their win, and were on as Guest Champs. I always hated how the judges kidnapped their guest performance! All in all, I prefer the new remake for many other reasons -- it's so much fuller and balanced, and oh, so tight!

It's Nick "Le-shaaayyy". He was also the host of the show. 😂❤
Nick Lachey was from a boy group that also had his brother in it called 98 degrees.

The perfect song for Homefree to cover.❤🎉 They KILLED IT❤
Austin's voice has matured so much.
In my humble opinion, Home Free blew the judges away! This version is just stunning and classic Home Free! Just love these boys! ❤ #HomeFree
That closing was a classic Home Free Harmonizing ending...so beautiful. Dylan you still got I WANT CRAZY to do....and it's awesome bro
He did it a few weeks ago. It’s in the playlist and his reaction is great! Go check it out❤
@@terimingle8957 as usual UA-cam didn't get me a notification, so I missedit. It's for the new version, right?
The best part of the sing off version was Austin and Shawn at the end. But the new version is absolutely stunning! 🤙
I love this positive tone! We see the same with "When A Man Loves a Woman" the tone leads the song. This is a perfect song for these guys.
