and the tuning is perfect!
James Berlo look up drummerboy1999
freakin crushed it like a red solo cup at a frat party. very nice dude!!!!
BrandonGH5 Ha, ha, ha! I never cease to be entertained by the wonderful comments people leave here. This one might be one of my favorites. Thanks so much, Brandon!
You win the prize for best response.
These drums are turned great. Of course, a lot of how good a drum sound depends greatly on the talent of the drummer. This man can play his ass off.
Those are very kind words, Avelino! Thanks so much for the nice comment.
Yeah! Don't buy a drum dial, it's useless
The tuning on the snare... just absolutely perfect. Spot on Bonham signature sound!!
The ideas and attitude of your opening solo were dead-on! Thanks for taking the time to conduct this comparison!
Billy Leva Thanks so much for the comment, Billy! I really appreciate it. It was definitely a fun video to put together. There really aren't enough videos of Stainless Steel drums out there (from what I've found)...
The 79 looks and sounds way better personally. Thanks dude
I love the old Ludwig tom mount. My first Ludwig's were early seventies silver sparkle that had the same mount. Pretty crude looking, but it never failed me in 5 years of practice, gigs etc.
Things ICONIC never grow old. YOU'VE made this TIMELESS!!
Thanks so much, Ted! I'm really happy to hear you dug it, and I really appreciate the kind words! I promise there will be more of this kit coming soon!
Dude... You sound just like JB great job
+Ronny Swift Thanks so much, Ronny! I really appreciate it, brother!
Derek, that is absolutely my most favorite kit he used, they are Beautiful n Brother u sound dynamite luv ur videos keep em coming, .I'm trying Brother 👊 U Rock Pal!
NOT.... left foot was all over the place come on
@@chetweeds6882 I suspect you're the only one that heard that...
@@KickItLikeBonham You are amazing. I met Bonham 2 times In Philadelphia ‘
OMG! Amazing drumming and jaw-dropping kit! WOW!
I would say this is probably the best drumming video on UA-cam a very gracious considerate and knowledgeable host ,some outstanding playing and two of the baddest drum kits on the planet and the sound Quality superb. PS forget the drum dial tuner you don't need it, your tuning by ear is spot on.
+lynsuefa Reading your comments is always a good pick-me-up! Thanks, my friend. I always appreciate it. I'm hoping to get this kit back in front of the camera very soon. I'm also excited because I found out that these drums will be making their live debut at a Led Zepagain show in December when we do a show dedicated to the 1977 tour! I can't wait!
I can listen to this all day everyday and play along!! Fantastic playing sir!
Great stuff, brother! Immaculate sounding kit and fantastic playing.
I really appreciate it, Glen! Thanks so much for the nice comment! I'm excited to get this kit set up again and record some more videos with it!
Great job on this video! I watch this about 4Xs a year. Thanks!!!
i could listen to this all day
Chriso110 I'll test UA-cam's time limit on uploads and see if I can accommodate your statement in a future video...
They sound super amazing! Great chops too!
Very nice work! Your tuning video was very spot on as well. Keep em coming!!
Fel Torres Awesome, Fel! Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I'll keep em' coming.
Drums sound beautiful. Cool crossover fill patterns too!
always super perfect an a blast to watch an hear you play especialy when i feel depressed. you always bring up my spirit when i feel down
Robert Thibodeaux That means a lot to me, Robert! Thank you, my friend!
great video... demo sounds sooo sweet!
your crossovers are a thing of beauty.
Very good Bonham work. Love watching and listening to it loudly.
That's awesome, man! Thanks so much! I have to admit to making sure I listen to these videos on decent speakers at a louder volume before I publish them. They have to pass that earth-shaking test before they go live 😄
Fantastic tuning/micing of the kits. The high pitch tuning that Bonham used makes the drums sound almost funny w/o the micing/mixing. I just found and purchased a S.S. Bonham kit with the 10x14 that also includes a 12 and 13in toms. The owner bought it NEW in 1977. And I prefer the resonance from the original bearing edges to the re-issue edges. Also, from what I have learned, the shells on the r.I. are thicker than the vintage originals. Dude....you make that kit sound the way it should. And your playing is so reminiscent of Bonham that's its scary good!!!! Peace....
Kevin R. Thanks, Kevin! I tend to agree about the vintage shells. I decided to stick with the re-issues and sell the vintage kit (to help cover buying the re-issue kit), and while I'm still REALLY happy with the new set, part of me still really itches for the 70's shells. That's no fault of the newer drums. I just really like the idea of having the original shells. I'm happy to have them in Bonham sizes now, as finding a 70's 14x26 in the configuration that Bonham used, for a reasonable price, was not happening. Still, I'm fortunate to have either one, and will keep making the best out of them that I possibly can...
that was a labor of love bro. A+++ work
That is a great video, with a lot of information and great drum playing with that. And your voice is fine!
overdriven56 I appreciate it, as always! I definitely prefer having the drums do the speaking. I don't have any problem with my voice in everyday conversation, but I feel like I'd put myself to sleep if I had to listen to me for 30 minutes...
Your interpretation of Bonham's style circa 77-79 is extremely accurate. Loved it!
Incredible stuff as always MojoRisn, your prowess and sound never disappoint. I've said it before, I'll say it again, best drum channel on UA-cam.
+MrBabyrang Thanks so much, my friend! That's as nice as compliments come in my opinion, and it'll keep me striving to be the best I can be in all of the videos moving forward. All the best to you!
Watching these videos are so awesome as a drummer and a huge Bonzo fan because you get to see all the things Bonham did when he played. its like the footage you wish they took of him back in the 70's so you could actually see what hes doing and duplicate it, and you nail like every song. I thought his sound could never be duplicated and only played but never with the same feel. But you're the first drummer ive seen to totally get that distinct Bonham sound and feel
I'm framing this comment on my wall! Thanks so much, man. I very much agree with you about wishing there were more footage of Bonham available. When I first saw the unedited footage from Australia 1972, I got a little teary eyed at the footage they shot of Bonham, especially at the end of Dazed and Confused and Moby Dick. If you've never seen it before, search for 'hefty derigible' here on UA-cam and enjoy.
I know I've said it before, and I'll say it again, but the kind of support you just showed me definitely keeps me doing my best. I'll keep giving these videos everything I've got.
Great playing and I love that drum kit....looks as good as it sounds...kudos!!
Awesome vid! Back to school with Mr.Mojo, All subscribers get Music School credits for watching this vid. Greatly appreciate all the details you gave on the vintage kit. As for the drum show, Sweeet! All the hi hat work was crazy. You never hear hi hat variations like that. Of course the tom fills and ghost notes are always superb. I am always left with something to try after your vids. Thanks Man, keep them coming.
And I'm always left wanting to spend the rest of the day trying to put together something new in the hopes that you'll leave more comments. It's a good cycle to get into...
Both fantastic sounding kits to my ear. Great playing!! I must confess, I'm not a drummer, but stumbled upon your channel recently whilst looking for a drums only cover of "travelling riverside blues". Your cover is spot on. I subscribed straight away and watched most of your other Zep covers and I think it's the closest overall feel for the great mans playing I've come across to date! You have some very tasty kits at your disposal but as a bass player I have to say it's the Acoustic amp sitting to your left that I'm drooling over!! ;-D
Great work man, keep the Led coming, I'm listening and playing along over here in England! :)
mlc4069 Ha, ha! Those Acoustic amps and cabinet will hopefully be popping up in a little more in the not-too-far-off-future. A guitar player I've been working with for a little while has been working on assembling all of Zeppelin's backline, so we're hoping to put together a project that utilizes all of it. My garage gets to be the storage facility for all of it...And thank you so much for the nice comment! I'll definitely keep them coming...
Well done video, really love your tunings and playing.
I really appreciate it, Chris! Thanks so much for leaving the nice comment. I promise I'll keep giving these videos my best efforts!
My first set in 1983 was a used 1979 Ludwig 5 piece stainless steel....thanks for this video man.
My pleasure! Do you still have that kit?
@@KickItLikeBonham No, I . Stopped playing in roughly 89 joined the the Marines and that was that. I gave them to my best friend who still has them....didnt think I would play anymore until a couple of years ago lol.
forgot to say, you play very well and you have always pretty nice drums to show =). I wish I'd have a ludwig like you present on each video !! peace and keep drummin !
+Al R Thanks, Al! I feel very fortunate to have access to all of these kits. I hope to keep sharing them with you guys for as long as possible.
Tearing it up on that beautiful kit! Respect bro!
Thanks so much, Dale! I really dig your stuff, too! Keep it all going!
Sweet solo bro that was sick
really cool...Yer my hero... both kits sound amazing... and your drumming gets better every day... and you were always pretty darn good Bravo MMR!
Thanks so much, Brad. I always appreciate it :)
Fantastic stuff and (especially) playing! I could listen to you analyze drums all day.
LedZepfilm Always appreciated, man! This was definitely a cool project to undertake. I'd love to do the same thing for the modern vistalites vs a vintage Bonham vistalite kit. I have a feeling that will remain a pipe dream for quite a while though...
Are your Vistalites modern or vintage?
LedZepfilm They're the modern re-issues. They're reat, but if I'd known then what I know now, I'd probably get the starlite acrylic shells and assemble them myself. That way I could get the badge in the correct position, 6 lugs on the 10x14 instead of 8, and any number of other little differences...
I love your attention to detail!
MrMojoRisin1967 I here ya on the lugs, opens up the drums sonic quality and tunning range, imo,
this was such a joy to watch and listen to! thanks
12/2020: Wow....a blast from the past, mine. I started playing drums in 3rd. grade.....first on coffee tables, dashboards, etc; first snare in 5th. grade. By 7th. I had THIS kit....in the living room. This was the late 1960's, and my folks thought having a drum kit would keep me grounded and entertained on the homefront; they were right. And playing along to Bonham and Zeppelin was a requirement of the times. We all did....because he was so great. I saw them in concert (4) times; what I really saw was....HISTORY.
Nice playing and great drum sound!
Ludwig’s just have that sound. Awesome playing
That's a fact, isn't it! I've played on a lot of different drum kits in my life, and none have given me quite the satisfaction of a Ludwig kit! I'm happy to read that you enjoy their sound, too! All the best to you!
Tuned up & played like the man himself. Great job!
Thank you! Great job and awesome sets, both of them. They truly sound like thunder!!
Kalle Aalto Thank you so much, Kalle! They are both awesome kits! It is a pretty novel idea to make big ass drums out of a material like Stainless Steel, and I'm very glad Ludwig did.
Such great drumming!! Love that kit too !! Sounds amazing!!
Thank you so much, John! It's a beast to play, but so very satisfying :)
Love the sound of the chromes at the beginning. Warmer than I would have thought.
You are doing a fantastic job. Tear those up man, keep it up.
Great job man, very cool comparison. You did great! Thank you! for staying on point and not much bullshit i appreciate your effort.
great playing man! really solid
Also , A selfish request. I'd love to hear you play "The Wanton Song" on the SS kits.
Thanks
Nicely done! Thanks for this!
+dunnettclassicdrums Thank you for all that you do! It's an honor to be able to play these drums!
Great chops my man! Enjoyed ending part tremendously. Your stick control is not normal haha
Thanks for making this great video! Don't take offense to this. If you take me, you and a bunch of other drummers into your garage studio and play your kit, none of us would sound like Bonham. He was so unique in his style that when he died Zep had to break up. Because he was and still is irreplaceable.
I like the re issue kit much better than the 79 SS kit. Keep up the great work, you're awesome!
Well, his son Jason can fill in John's shoes quite nicely on all the Led Zeppelin songs.. As a matter of fact, he used to play in a band that he himself formed back before he joined Sammy Hagar and the Circle called "The Led Zeppelin Experience" and he was absolutely OUTSTANDING playing those tunes! Today, he can actually play like his late father did back in the '70's! Not surprising, because John taught Jason everything he knows about playing drums and it really shows!
He also jammed with Led Zeppelin as well back in the early 2000's in the "Resurrection Day" videos. If you haven't seen it, then by all means, you should check them out. They can be found right here on UA-cam. I guarantee, you will be thoroughly amazed how well he filled in for his Dad!
Jason is great and definitely fills his fathers shoes well that being said but if I had to pick who sounds closest I’d say this guy is closer
Really nice video, thanks for taking the time to do this, probably the best take I have seen from anyone on John Henry's technique and playing, great job, got to say I like the re-issues better but really not that much difference, would be pleased with either one
Dean Smith That's what I'm saying! They're both fantastic kits, and there's an awe-inspiring aspect to each of them that negates any small differences they may have. I really appreciate the comment, Dean. Thank you so much!
Great playing. Perfectly tuned kit. Love hear you playing it to some Zep covers.
I'm thrilled to hear it, Gary! I actually have a cover of 'Achilles Last Stand' being played on this kit. If you search the channel, it should pop up!
Thank you for making these videos
Wow, sounds fantastic, great drumming too.
rhythmantic - Sal D'Amato As always, thank you so much, Sal!
you are the fourth one, just after John Bonham,Jason Bonham and Dan Zalac, men who have rights to play this great half time shuffle with the spirit, thanks a lot
Man, that kit sounds GREAT! Nice playing too!!!:)
Any guitar play would love to have you as their drummer. Great chops.
+MorningView4 I really appreciate it, my friend! I know there are plenty of guitar players that I would love to play drums for. I am very fortunate to have some incredible guitar players to jam with as it stands, so it's always incentive to keep working hard.
Wonderful sounding kit, looks fab too!
I love the sounds of the drums and your drumming is great too.
Thank so much, Michael! I very much appreciate the kind words!
Seeing this cracks me up since I just bought a tiny Ludwig Breakbeats kit.
As a Guitar Player ,and Led Zep FREAK , there´s NOTHING Cooler than a Great Drum Sound , and EXACTLY this is my kind of great Rock Drumming , This ludwig Kit + Your Skills are Kickin´some asses
+Jimi Hendrix Right on, brother! I definitely really appreciate the support you've shown lately. I'm really glad you're digging the videos. I can't wait to get home and have some time to focus on making more!
Great playing, kit sounds awesome!
Nice freaking chops! Sounds awesome!
Awesome sound dude!
Thanks for the Demo. I used to own a 1979 stainless kit. 24" 12" 13" 14" 15" 16" and I still have the 6.5" Supraphonic. The 15" was the best sounding drum on the kit. Big problem with that kit was that they were very, very difficult to tune. It wasn't until I bought my Gretsch kit in '87 that I had easy success tuning. Maybe I just sucked at it. Anyway, both kits sound great. I, however prefer the vintage kit. I like the 14" and to me, the vintage drums seem to sing more. I also like the very slight buzz in the floor toms. Great job and thanks again!
ua-cam.com/video/g9SrfnrI1H8/v-deo.html Im not that big on the shinny coated heads but its what it came with 1920 s Ludwig 28'' ive got a power stroke 3 and a fyber skin comming when I get it set up ill put another one up thought you might appreciate. strange why they wood drop the bearing edges eh on re issue ,, Be well
Sweet Kit !! Excellent drumming
awesome and thanks for uploading this. I was blown away by the very first groove you chose to play; it has always been among my most favourite things be played. spectacular playing and video. I'd love to know why you chose that groove to start off with :)
peace
Nice control brother. Kit sounds great
Sick. I'm physically nauseated by awesomeness. Nice!
+Jonathan Mitchell Ha, ha! Put this one on the list for one of my all-time favorite comments! Nice one!
Nice SHOWCO shirt. I have a stainless kit from the late 70's and gigged with it for many years. They look awesome with stage lights reflecting off them. I used all kinds of heads chasing down the perfect tune. Clear Pinstripes with muffle rings and clear Ambassadors is what I usually used.
fantastic playing
excelent sound man! congrats!!!
Awesome Drumming!! Both Kits sound great... but the Vintage Kit is my favorite. It sounds a lot more Powerful. The Shells sound better. Probably has to do with the bearing edges. Thanks for sharing.. Bonzo would be proud!
Wow loved the beginning solo
Austin Gaver It's not note-for-note from The Song Remains The Same version of Moby Dick, but I've listened to that so many times that it's tough not to automatically default to performing something like that. Bonham was just so smooth on some of those parts.
I got the reissue vista lites in 2004,they are awesome, just put all new black dots on them, love them. These are great too, nice playing.
And you didn't even break a sweat!...Nice cross sticking. Impressive!
+Stamp Jockey Thanks, my friend! I really appreciate it :)
I loved the way you tuned it..! Nostalgia :)
The kit sounds great! Nice playing too!
Thanks so much, man!
Been researching several Stainless steel kits, but Ludwig are definitely the best. Great drumming btw.
While I don't have a lot of experience with other stainless steel kits, I can definitely vouch for Ludwig as my favorite :)
Only kit I've had since high school in the 70's. 12, 13, 14, 15 concert toms, 18 floor, 24 kick, 5x14 ss snare. Crushing loud but it still sounds great.
Great Playing , Tone , Skills really enjoy this !
Hey, you sound great both ways. Your voice on your commentary is totally fine. We are our own worst critics. Great job!.
BEAUTIFUL JOB
Beatrice B Thanks so much, Beatrice!
Awesome drumming!
It's nice to see somebody spend a lot of money on great gear and actually know how to play well on it.
Great video!
jon fuller Thanks, Jon! I don't get a chance to play these kits out very often, so I'm happy to share them in any way I can :)
Great playing man!
Jim Eisele Thanks so much, Jim! I really appreciate your comment! I'll keep 'em coming!
Love the little nod to Max Roach at the very beginning
Aye! Such a fun little part to play, and I love how it lends itself to opening up into a solo...
well well , comparisons take time, Ive done a few,, so thx.I am a vintage man through and through , not being bias , but the edges definitely make the dif. really notice it in the rack tom .nice to watch you evolve over the years.. I have recently joined the You Tube community with a channel. and am just learning to edit and small stuff like that. Very well done.
Billy Ray Smith Dude! Billy, your space is seriously impressive! I don't know if the camera makes it look that much bigger, but it looks like you have access to the whole basement of a department store (and enough drums to fill the whole thing). Seriously, seriously impressive. I've really enjoyed checking out your videos. I very much prefer vintage kits as well. I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I now have three modern kits in my collection (including this stainless steel kit), but the majority are still good ol' fashioned 3-ply 60's/70's Ludwigs...
MrMojoRisin1967
WoW! thank you, Yer comments are appreciated as I am new to the You Tube Family, and like all of us am hoping for subscribers and more interaction like what were doin, so thx again.. Ah yes the space,, Ha ha ,... Its actually above my carport like an old truck parts mezzanine thing, a place to hide the body's ya know. Specially built for this purpose, [Vintage Drums]. I have a couple missing links right now but know they will come in time , that being , early 70s green sparkle, Bonham, and perhaps an ol' Slingerland,. Very grateful for your time spent on my site, and comments, I know ya'v heard it before ,but yer Bonham stuff, IMO, Is the best Ive seen. Keep it up, ttys. Billy Ray
Look at that Acoustic 360 in the back - JPJ would be proud.
love the sound of that Ludwig kit awesome dude
Instant subscribe! Great job dude!!!
+Matti Siik (M4Z4) Right on! Thank so much, Matti! I promise I'll keep them coming!
Great solo and great sounding kit.
+steve mackey Right on! I'm happy you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for the kind words, Steve!
Impressive!!! Really enjoyed the video.
CptKrunch Awesome, man! I'm glad to hear it! There just aren't enough videos of Stainless Steel kits out there...
Well, the kit is cool but, the Bonham feel you have is killer.
Great review ... Cheers
Very Impressive playing !! Great comparison
Thanks so much, Bob! I really appreciate the kind words!
hey brother mighty is back .. glad I stopped by, very nice as usual , think last time I was watching it was were gonna groove.a favorite of mine you nailed it ..perfect indeed .... so how have you been love the stainless kit .. I sat down at one in the music store many years ago price was way over 5k.... I remember adjusting the floor toms ......had quite a bit of weight to them...... I'm playing on a rag tag kit now but seeing the Bonham kits you've been playing , I've made my mind up.....I'm getting one ......Do you have anything you want to let go of ???? lol back to this vid very smooth great sound , I didn't notice if you mentioned what heads your using , I was jumping ahead to the drum playing... I thank you for the display of excellence.. The Bonham way -- Mighty..
