John Bonham Drum Lesson: Dazed & Confused (Danmarks Radio).

  • I think the first time I witnessed Bonham play the first three fills in the Danmarks Radio version of "Dazed and Confused," I had my entire existence rocked off its fault line. Napster had just become a thing (circa 2000-2001), and I was trying to scour the depths of the world wide web for any live Led Zeppelin material I could find. With the simple search of "Live Led Zeppelin," I was quickly exposed to the "Listen To This Eddie" performance of "The Song Remains The Same," and the entirety of the Danmarks Radio performance. Needless to say, it cemented John Bonham as the Zeus of all drummers in my mind, and now twenty years later, I'm sitting here in my garage making a video about that mythical performance.
    Here is the original Danmarks Radio performance: • Led Zeppelin: Live on ...
    Some poor saps might argue that the visual element of seeing Bonzo perform these fills is what makes them seem cool, but after countless years of downloading and listening to bootlegs ala Presence's fantastic site (RIP Jason Peterson - the contributions you made to the world of Zeppelin will resonate until the sun swallows the Earth), the musical quality and ingenuity of these fills definitely stand on their own. To some degree, it ruined a lot of performances of Dazed and Confused for me, because I would listen in hopes of hearing even one of these fills thrown into the performance. Alas, the brilliance of Bonzo was in not having to repeat himself; his fearlessness, creativity, and respect for the instrument and the music that he was playing would almost always lead to something new and exciting.
    I apologize for any harsh cuts in this video. I ended up babbling for over an hour when I filmed this, and in the effort to chop it down to some manageable length, I had to make some concessions in the quality of the cuts. Still, I hope it serves it's purpose and helps fill in any gaps or answers any questions you may have about his amazing performance!

    When is the next video coming Derek?

    • @KickItLikeBonham
      @KickItLikeBonham  3 роки тому +5

      Man, I hope as soon as possible! It's been an interesting concoction of variables on my end for 2020; My wife and I had our second kid, we moved into a new place, and I had to have back surgery. Needless to say, my output on the UA-cam front hasn't been nearly as a prolific as I was hoping for this year.
      Still, the list of topics for videos is 1,000 ideas long, so now that I'm on the better end of recovering from surgery, I'm going to start to see what I can put together. For example, one idea I've had for a loooong time would be titled, "Zen and the Art of Drum Maintenance." Basically, the Green Sparkle kit I have needs a lot of tender, loving care after hundreds of shows of abuse. I thought it might be beneficial to put together a video on the different ways of taking care of the various parts of a drum set, remove rust from hardware, what kind of sealer wax to use to keep hardware protected from oxidation, etc, etc. Basic stuff, but maybe beneficial for new drummers.
      The other facet will be putting together the new garage to record. I was incredibly sad to leave the old garage behind, but the new one is actually a little bigger, and so my hope was to spruce it up and make it as nice as possible - wood laminate, sound-proofing the walls with sound board, insulation and solid sheet rock. That's all stuff I can do myself, but I'm about five weeks away from getting the thumbs up from my neurosurgeon to engage in heavy lifting again. I'm so excited to get going on that though, so I'm trying to do what I can where I can.
      I had anticipated some amount of these setbacks, and was trying to build up a stockpile of covers I could upload while I was down. The goal was: Drum cover WITH music uploaded on Monday, drum cover WITHOUT music on Wednesday, and then a lesson on the song that was covered on Friday. Of course, that didn't quite pan out the way I had hoped; the most I was able to get done was just putting together a cover for 'Ramble On.' I'll get back to it all as soon as possible, but at least I can leave you with this for the time being:

      @@KickItLikeBonham Thanks for the reply. Geez what a year for you, especially since you didnt even mention and or include the pandemic. The green sparkle kit video sounds like an extremely good idea since you seem to be the only one who actually do updated videos showing of the vintage Bonham Ludwig kits. Would definitely watch that. Hoping too see a yank of new videos soon, but take your time, you have left so much good content to keep us entertained for a while. I would also LOVE to see you break down more of his live fills like you did in this video. Best regards.

      If I want to make a rock band and make it successful but u know CLASSIC ROCK MUSIC is dying in this generation so how to make a rock band successful in this generation
      I'm feeling very for this generation as it does not have sense of classic 70's and 80's rock music etc I wish I could live in that era

      @@rainsong7327 I'm not the most qualified person to speak on that matter. I've heard second hand that there are differences between sparkle wraps from the 60's and 70's versus modern wraps, but it sounds like they're minimal. And unfortunately, I can't recall seeing a vintage green sparkle next to a modern green sparkle to know. The drum shells I have are vintage, but it's a rewrap with a modern green sparkle. I know this isn't really answering your question, so I'm sorry for the long-winded response. Hopefully, someone with more experience will see this!

      I try not to bury the beater, although I'm sure it happens from time to time. From the few shots of Bonham's kick technique I've seen, it doesn't look like he buried the beater, either. I think a lot of what he did on the kick was dependent on the beater bouncing off the head and then his foot catching the pedal at the right time to string together multiple hits for whatever beat he was playing.

    See I told you it was going to be epic, 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍nice kit by the way Is it just the Ritchie ring for dampening on this kit or are you using a felt strip also? Iv always wondered about the bass drum sound on good times bad times if it is a 22 slingerland filled with news paper? Iv not heard anyone get that “ sound “ from their kick. Anyhow random thought comment over🙃keep up the good work excellent lesson.

    • @KickItLikeBonham
      @KickItLikeBonham  4 роки тому +1

      Hey James! I do have a felt strip on the batter head and the Ritchie ring on the resonant head. I noticed that that's how Bonham had this kit dialed in, so I decided to try and do the same. In regards to Good Times, Bad Times - that's a great question! I'm guessing it was some amount of mixing / engineering to get that soft 'woof' sound they achieved on the kick. Maybe some kind of compression, along with the 22" kick and the way he had it tuned? One of the things I'd like to do is set up an old Super Classic kit (13/16/22) and play through that first record with the drums tuned up as closely as I can to the first record. All in good time...

    Hey man any tips for playing the dazed and confused crossovers? When I do it they sound like doubles with a delayed kick instead of smooth triplets.

    • @KickItLikeBonham
      @KickItLikeBonham  4 роки тому +1

      I would recommend focusing on whichever hand you hit with last, whether you're leading with your right hand or your left hand. If you focus on making sure the transition between that last hit on the tom and then the hit on the kick are solid, it generally helps me balance out the triplets to be consistent. Give that last hit with your hand just a little more power.
      This is one exercise that does benefit from slowing it down to the point that you can play them consistently and then gradually increasing the speed. Sometimes, playing something slow doesn't really work when you speed it up (and vice-versa), but this is one that I think does work pretty well at slower speeds translating to more consistency when sped up. That being said, you can also throw caution to the wind and decide to play the triplets for say...one to one and a half minutes, sloppy or not. Don't stop if they are sloppy, but instead, try and think about what part of your body is dragging and making them sloppy and then try to balance that out WHILE you're still playing them. If you're still relatively new to the drums, this process can be a little challenging. However, it's something you will develop more naturally with experience, and certainly something to focus on developing sooner than later so that you improve faster.
      The last thing I'd recommend is finding some way of recording yourself to hear what it actually sounds like from a little distance. I think there are apps you can download for your phone that will compress the audio so that you're not overloading the mic, and will allow you to hear things more clearly. There's no substitute for being able to listen and review what you're playing after the fact so that you can give your brain a chance to process what you're supposed to do outside of the time you're actually sitting down and playing the drums.
      I hope some amount of that is of benefit to you, Tyler!

    What's the purpose of having the tom mounted on the kick and having it on a stand? I knew Bonham did that and I always wondered

    • @KickItLikeBonham
      @KickItLikeBonham  4 роки тому +1

      I think for added stability. Bonham may have been paying tribute to other drummers, like Ringo, who used the Rogers mount on their Ludwig kits, as well. But I think, overall, it helped keep the rack tom in place. In particular, playing Moby Dick / Pat's Delight and slamming the drums with his hands probably caused any number of small to large mishaps that were frustrating and inconvenient in the midst of playing, so adding that mount was the easiest solution at the time.

      @@KickItLikeBonham It's an odd thing altogether as on a drum kit you get your weaker hand (left if your a righty) to do the most complex things (grace notes, etc).
