I have the same problem as you with critters. In the last month I eliminated 10 squirrels, 10 raccoons, 7 skunks, and 2 opossums from my fig patch. I now have built a wire cage 4ft by 4ft by 8ft that I place my fig trees with ripening figs inside. The fig trees without ripening figs stay outside the cage. So far, so good.
I thibk you should head start some of ur figs in ur grow tent. Thats what im going to do from now on. I grew my trees from cuttings pass winter. I topped them at 18 inches and they formed their main scaffolds. All my trees are giving me fruit this year. Some have 40+ like my smith. My champagne and lsu holier stalled until we hit mid july to start making fruit. My 5x5 grow tent can take 12 7 gallons trees and 4 10 gallons trees. So total of 16 trees. Plan to start them in march. My 10 gallons trees so far are VDB smith and soon my english brown turkey. I have an italian 258 and a few others that will definetly go in the grow tent next year. Every fig that rippened i was able to eat it. I have had no splitting or a fig going bad on the tree. Im lucky i guess to not have had bird and pests issues this year. Here in Quebec we are having 2 weeks above 70F and above 55F at night. But mission accomplished so far f9r my first ever year cultivating fig trees. 2 inch trunks with main scaffolds formed in one year.
I wonder why nobody’s introduced the fig wasp to Florida? I’d think they’d survive there. You’d think they’d spread along most of the southern coastal areas and into Mexico.
Sorry to see you loosing your figs 😢! I’m very proactive about keeping my fruits including figs and setting traps 🪤 to remove any intrusive pests that’s what I have no issue doing, I don’t kill them but I give them a free ride few miles away 😅
