- Hey guys, here's a story on my recent experience with my very upsetting death of my anemone. Please learn from my stupid mistake. Unfortunately it cost me the life of my anemone....
I know better for next time and I do plan on getting another given my clown hosted fairly quickly with no encouragement from me. Very cool symbiotic relationship these animals have. Please subscribe! Comment with tips or questions or just to say howdy! Thanks for watching.
Also, I did not document the repercussions of the death of my anemone due to me being very upset.

it's rough when a pet dies, especially when it doesn't know any better.
Thanks for sharing and I hope you figure out how to stop that from happening again!
+Herowebcomics thank you!
The whole time I was waiting for you to say it walked into the powerhead
Don't sweat it man, it's sad but the fact is we really only get better at this hobby by killing things.
Paradise Reef this sounds halarious to me for someone reason 😂😂😂😂😂
Paradise Reef; Very sad, yet seemingly very true.
oh boo who, go bleed your heart elsewhere, or go boycott every scientist in the world because they all take samples and kill them to learn. and if your one of those I'm a vegertarian types, plants are living things also so stop eating
Corals are not plants
Yea tell me about it they call me terminator at my local pet shop lol
I knew anemones were alive, but I never knew they could move around the tank! Awesome!
Its really fascinating to see it too!
You just saved me about 70 bucks man. I just purchased 2 bubble tips. A green and a red. I'm putting them in a biocube....with an additional powerhead...I didn't even think about the powerhead issue. I will definitely take care of covering it immediately. Good thing they dont arrive until Tuesday. Sorry for your loss, but know you've saved my r/gbta's. Thanks again
So sorry this happen to you but I appreciate you sharing. Great to know because I would have never thought of it.
Thanks for sharing! You probably saved dozens of bubble tip anemones because of this video.
Thought u we’re gonna start crying
mine died today, exactly what happen to you. Moving forward what have you done after that to prevent this from happening again, I'm not sure if I was still plunge and buy something like this. Will still cost a few bucks then it will die.
You should get rid of the maroon and get another ocellaris
Wow.. Would never have thought about that (Im a very green newbie).
Thanks for sharing!!
Honestly when you said rookie mistake, I thought this was gonna be a situation where you bought the anemone before your tank was stable.
Do you cover the back half of the pump... Were the water gets sucked up and in to the power head? Or do you have to cover the entire thing...except for the front of course.
Yeah just cover wherever you feel water is being taken in. That’s really the only danger area to the nem.
When you say power head, are you talking about the wave maker?
Joe - thanks for sharing your not so great experience. You convinced me to get the as-of-yet unused foam sleeves for my MP10 pumps out of the boxes and slip them on today, just before adding my first RBTA. The decision to add one to my reef tank took much deliberation, so I'm hoping that my ocellaris clowns are hosted by it.
sorry to hear about your loss :( found your channel through PsychedelicBabe's shoutout. Love your videos, defo worth a sub :)
DTMs Reef thanks for watching and subbing. I appreciate it!
Marroon clownfish in a 12 gallon? thing is gonna get YUGE
Clark Jacobs I'm thinking same thing. for not even a fully grown maroon 12 gallon tank is to small. I'm upgrading to 120ish gallon tank in a couple weeks after my first tanks power blew and can't fix it lol
That maroon clown is gonna kill the other clown too, that light doesn't look strong enough for an anemone, and is that tank an all in one with an overflow? if so, you dont need a power filter
Tropaquarium is one of the best stores in New Jersey for marine life. Brent is one of nicest and most knowledgeable people I have met in my 20 plus years in the hobby.
Store is closed now..Brent works for world wide corals in Florida now
Thank You For Sharing Your Story... I impulse bought a rose & a green anemone today. After seeing your video I put a stocking over my power head... in the meantime my green anemone has crawled into a hole in the rock! I hope it doesn't stay there! Paid a lot for it to hide inside a rock!!!
My anemone got caught in my wave maker, some tissue lost but its not dead. It's not looking that great now , do you think it will survive ?
Brilliant info. Do you only need to cover the wave maker during the settling down of the anemone?
Thanks for the advice
yooooo, this is so cool. I work in that area and has been going to that store for a few months now. Jade is the best she really know her shit!!
Viz S nice! Yeah I've been going there for years! Love it there. Love their coral prices too. Always a good trip going there.
when adding an anemone cut the top half of a soda bottle off, drill some holes in it and take the cap off. fit that over your powerhead. if the anemone should then choose to sit on it, you can just remove it from the bottle and theres no danger of it getting blitz in your powerhead.
Thank you for sharing this. I would have never thought of this happening...
Also, if you have an intake to filtration, cover it as well. Anemones get sucked in those all the time. The sad part is that's a slow death. Made that mistake, but I was careful to cover the power head. Lessons learned.
just got a green bta .. gonna cover my powerheads with some mesh now .. chin up man your tanks doing good, keep doing what you do and enjoy it.
im making a tank just like the one you have there. also ive got many plants from that exact store in ocean and plan on getting more stuff. just ordered the same anemone as well wish i saw this vid before hand lol
That really sucks. Sorry to hear about your anemone. Reading about them moving a bunch and getting caught in the power head kept me at an emotional distance. I have too much coral in my tank to take that chance. That being said. I do have a rock flower anemone. He doesn't really move, and clowns can't really host them.
Cheese Bread Eddy thank you! And thanks for watching! Anemones still bring a lot of life to the tank regardless if the clowns host.
I'm fortunate to live 10 minutes away from tropiquarium. I thought it was really cool when you mentioned that place, never really spoken to another reefer who has been in there
I have 2 btas on my 7 gallon nano for 2+ yrs now. It is possible to keep them as long as you are disciplined in the hobby and well prepared knowledge wise.
Oh man it can happen. Great lesson for everyone. I subbed
i was already subbed but i'm seeing p babes shout out for ya congrats hope ya get lots more subs from her even though this was a good bit ago lol awesome vid man can't wait for more:)
Paul Blaney she's the best. Thanks Paul!!
heck ya man thanks for your support . i did see that i forgot to hit the little bell so now i hit it and i'll be notified of your vids when they hit :)
Paul Blaney thanks brotha! I should hit the bell on your channel too with all your random live streams! Always a good time in those.
Lol watching this in 2023 but iv had 5 bubble tips in a 20 gallon cube with a powerhead for about 3-4 years and never had this issue, have lost a sea slug to a powerhead tho
You simply got unlucky my man. This is very rare, usually it will not roam to a powerhead.
What type of power head do you have I am starting in the SW hobby and I would like to know what type of power head should I have for a 13.5 gallon tank, plz answer.
I'm on 0:41 and i don't want to go farther. My guess is it went into the powerhead. We shall see if im correct.
Damn. Everything was going well until then. Lesson learned. This is the one reason I never bought a nem. Glad everything else is doing well
Infamous Aquatics thank you for watching! And yeah still hitting some bumps with this hobby but it's going great nonetheless. I sub'd you!
So I need advise on this, this actually happened. What you recommend doing. I can't do a water change since I'm at work today, will it be fine to wait a day until I'm back to do it myself?
I think putting a Maroon clown in a 13.5 gallon tank was your first rookie mistake.
Thanks for the advice Joe!! 😁
He was probably on the quest for more light. Moving up closer to the top of the tank along the glass to get higher. I see you don't have many rock formations for that.
Adrian Massi the only place I could think for it would be the top left. And my LED bar is at 100%
A maroon clown can get 5" and is very territorial and can get very aggressive. Guarantee that your naked clown will be dead in a few months. I'd get rid of the maroon clown. Your tank is too small for a BTA, in my opinion. Your water volume is small and the quality will be making huge swings. That's why they say bigger tanks are easier with saltwater, smaller water quality changes. Also, that BTA was bleached out to begin with, and likely would have been dead soon anyways.
action camera that escalated quickly.
It happens to the best of us. I know how you feel Though, it sticks when you lose a new coral.
That happen to me too. Sucks.
i finally have an anemone i keep it in my small jar with an actinic blue 460nm light and a moderate water flow via aeration i just feed it today and its soo cute they call it glass anemone and its beautiful...
Nice tips and also look like you are making a lot of mistakes at a beginner, Including mixing different type of clownfish but hey you know learn as you go but do your research before hand will go a long way
Maroon Clownfish in a tank that small? C'mon dude. Also whats the other clown fish in the tank? Because Maroon Clownfish as massive bullies and you will struggle to introduce other fish
he's just starting out. help him succeed, don't bash him.
Sorry I didnt mean that in a condescending way just trying to help. Maybe try some Ocellaris clownfish first they will get along with everything, stear clear of Damsels at all costs though.
Thank you for the info Joe, it really helps, I'm out on a hunt for an anemone
Thks For Sharing!
My bubble tip just ate my Yasha. I wanna fricken drop kick it
Thank you for sharring this
The key is finding a healthy anemone. Lot of times you buy one from a store they are already dieing. Find an ebay store or fish store that is small to medium that specialise in the hobby. I ordered an rbta from live aquarium it's foot was damaged you can tell they probably just ripped it off the rock and put in a bag sent it.
Bro I literally watched your video, went out bought a bubble tip anemone, and he got sucked into the pump and died I’m so stupid
I got another one and made a DIY mesh cover for my wave maker, now even if he went up there he couldn’t get sucked in, LEARN FROM THIS GUY AND ME AND DONT LET YOUR ANEMONE DIE! COVER YOUR WAVEMAKER!
By power head do you mean the wave maker?
Yes
That anemone looked really bleached. I wouldn't have bought one that white to begin with since it means they've expelled all their zooxanthelle and would likely slowly waste away no matter how good the tank.
Good advice
Great video
Nice video I just subbed your channel 🤗
RIP tropiquarium
I lived in NJ and have been to Trop. Its a pretty good lfs.
How do you even cover a power head ?
How does something get sucked up into it if it blows water away from it? Surely it wasn't that powerful or the fish would be stuck to the glass 😂
To late has happened to me a couple of times 😢😢😢😢😢
Same thing happen too me with my first clown fish
don't feel bad man I did the same thing about 1 and a half years
Pjs fish tanks I just feel for the nem and my silly mistake
yea we all make mistakes when we first start heck I still do ha
I make a Hugh one in my 75 and the tank crashed that was the worst day ever
start again man im on my first tank atm and my anemone was happy for 2 days in its spot then i moved the water jet and he wasent happy anymore so now he just moves around all the time
does it really need to be a RED pantyhose lol
Goes faster if red
Freudian slip
I wouldn't recommend putting a anemone in any tank smaller than 50 gallons and only after has cycled for 6 months
Also man. I don't think you realize how big they actually get. That thing would take up that whole tank full grown and they grow pretty fast. Even then it would kill all the corals in that little tank from exploring. Get the anemone first and wait til it finds its spot. After that I would consider putting in corals once you know your anemone is settled. Even then it's still going to do all kinds of weird things you might not want it to do.
REST IN PEACE
made the same mistake. but I did have it covered. it survived got it in QT now to heal and will reintroduce into DT in a week or 2. and cover it up with mesh or panty hose.
yikes. well sounds like you have it under control!
I don't mean to put you down by saying this. In my opinion your rookie mistake was to not read enough about anemones to realize that your tank isn't suitable for them. First of all anemones can reach 6.5 feet which means that sooner or later you´d have to upgrade your tank or give away. It pisses me off to see how many ppl buy them out of a whimsical impulse at the market. I guess the one to blame is the seller for not asking the right questions. They just want your money.
On the other hand, when you add an anemone into the tank you are exposed to several reasons why that anemone will never be happy in your tank but that's another story and a responsibility of the owner.
u going to the swap in pa?
Reefing with Billy Pipes when is that?
this Saturday
Reefing with Billy Pipes ah, the cranberry festival is happening this weekend in chatsworth. Already had plans for that.
yo Joe!?!
Reefing with Billy Pipes hey what's up?
dude. get a torch or hammer instead. it would look bad ass in that tank
that anemone was sick anyway, anemones aren't white unless they are bleached/sick
Tristan Georgiadis they turn white when the water is too warm
what a way to go lol
Lol making mine safe now thanks your video made sense
Nice! Thanks for watching!
🙄 your right this is a rookie mistake and if u been in the saltwater hobby dealing with anemones and still don't know to do then ur still a rookie as well lol if u do any kind of research on keeping them its always one of the main things is to cover powerheads and open intakes before adding a nem they will try all sorts of spots out and almost seem to be curious at times. Its a sad thing and can be avoided if you research enough but with that being said its also still a common mistake new nem owners make. Hopefully even though it was the hard way u still learned its just to bad u didn't learn before hand but hey it happens on the plus side u wasn't to ashamed to admit ur mistake and are trying to spread the word. So for that respect....just prep for the next 1 a little better lol No more nem smoothies 😅
lol poor thing... rip anemone
😲💫😏
sorry about your anenome :(
I named my anemone fred
Lol chop chop
Same thing happened to me
at least was a premna the killer clown fish. not a big deal.
That was some pretty bad advice from the LFS bud. BTA can grow very fast and big. I think your tank was too small for it honestly.
Reefer Nanoman yeah I think so too. I'm just going to focus on the coral fish for now until I get my new 75 set up going
I can't believe anyone else hasn't mentioned the fact that he seems to be mispronouncing anemone. It sounds like he is saying anenome. Regardless, that sucks that you lost it.
Cory Sanderson if you understood what he was saying, that should be good enough. What are you perfect?
*Not the power head!! Sorry for your anemone loss*
+Aquatic Angler thank you. I'll be getting a new one very soon!
Small tip. Sally beauty supplies you can find a blowdryer foam cover. It's the perfect thickness, black, big pores so good flow and already sewn into the perfect shape cylindrical to cover a small powerhead and the foam is thin most importantly. It's like 3 dollars. That's what I use on mine. Keeps the cleaner shrimps legs safe lol.
WaterspoutsOfTheDeep thanks for that tip. I'm going to look into that. Really good idea. I appreciate it
poor anemone
lol
Lol
Dont put clownfish together
Why not? How do they make baby clowns then?
Yo
Lmao I'm in NJ :D
Hahaahahah shit happens
Should have named your channel No Joe!!!
Thanks for good info and nice video.
Couriers if you got a new anemone?
You have a new subscriber.
When you get a chance check out my videos.
it's AneMone ! why everybody says AneNome
can you sound it out for me?
Well I'm a French-speaking guy and in French it's quite easier to get the sound right because the "e" at the end is mute. Son we say aneMon. But every time I watch an English speaking saltwater tank youtube they say AneNome even when in the title it is written aneMone I wonder why xD
@@Tombraxis lol, i suppose its such a common thing. That it just is drilled into most peoples heads. welp, cant fix the vid now! Thanks for watching!
Dood I've been keeping them for years. Your up against shippers and transitions before it got to you. I've gone through hundreds until some lived. They are crazy hard to find a good one. But when it does they go crazy. You will go through many.
Should of had a v8
