Like any FWD-based sedan, this car under steers. To take advantage of SH-AWD you actually power through turns instead of breaking through turns which is usually the instinct. You can sometimes really feel the rear torque vectoring helping out, although you can never really fully get rid of under steer.
Like you said, you just can't be afraid to give it gas in a corner and let SH-AWD do its magic. If you do that, the understeer is almost non-existent and can even turn into slight oversteer. I got the rear to step out a bit a few times when I had my 4th gen 6MT, even in dry conditions.
A simple intake really wakes up these J series, I've got a short ram on my J32 and while it heatsoaks, the sound is amazing. Low-end, almost V8-like growl and roars when VTEC kicks in. I can't wait to get a proper cold air intake.
I kinda prefer these videos over the winding road ones, in these you actually test everything I would want to know like handling, braking, and acceleration 👍🏻
UA-cam has figured out that I'm a freak for these Acuras, and has started recommending me EVERY ACURA VIDEO YOU'VE EVER DONE. It's stunning to see how much improvement the brand has had in under a decade. Wow.
"for a..." ...this is the type of thing muscle car bros who only like V8's say. V8's aren't the only good sound in the world, there are engines of all sizes that can sound good and have their own character, it's like saying only one type of instrument sounds good because it's the loudest and angriest, not true at all and this is an outdated way of thinking. Even Toyota makes a V6 that can sound incredible when fitted to the right platform; *see Lotus Emira V6*
Great to see Acura getting their shit back together with the exterior styling. They probably want to change the interior as well, but like all mid-cycle refreshes; it is nearly impossible. I look forward for the next generation of Acuras, since it seems like Acura is bringing back aggressive-looking vehicles. Maybe the next generation TLX will feature a 400bhp TLX Type-S. Wouldn't mind picking one up for 60 grand.
Just discovered your videos and I've gotta say, well done. Video and audio quality are perfect and your style of reviewing is fantastic! Keep it up man, you'll go far
Of course it's going to understeer... You weren't on the throttle through the on ramps... The SH-AWD doesn't work unless your right foot is planting the throttle pedal down... Even on ramps and corners, you still need to feather the gas in order to get the rear end to rotate. Just thought I'd put that out there as a current 2018 A-Spec SH-AWD owner.
it's not about the AWD it's about suspension and tires, the handling is lacking in corners. Yes it is about the AWD when you're getting out of the corner, but not when you're getting into the corner, where you have zero throttle.
yup , you can see the transfer in the dash.you need to have a bit of throttle for sh awd to work. it work based off steering input and thorttle input. check my channel for bunch of 6mt sh awd videos
Hell yes! I want one. This would be my 6th Acura. Love them all. With SH-AWD, you need to nail it around the corners (at the apex) and let the SH-AWD rip you around the turn. My RL and MDX both with SH-AWD ripped corners once I got comfortable and trusting of the technology. Once you hit the throttle on the apex they felt like they were pivoting around the apex.
Really nice car - just wish it was closer in performance to the q50 and 340 - but if you don't care about blazing speed- this car would be the most reliable and best to own long term if that's your thing
I love Acura. I am 15 and am considering buying a car. Looking around, many dealerships only let my parents test ride the car. My dad, is very picky and biased, making it hard to feel what the car actually feels like to drive. With my learners license, I was able to actually test drive the car myself, and with it being the first ever sedan I’ve ever driven, I’m pleasantly surprised. It is an amazing car, I hope I can get it. I just need to find a job first.
@@quakerome4594 am glad you like yours- at the end of the day the size of the Q60 came to why I went with Acura.. am 6”2 and it felt too small in there with the Q60
There is ALWAYS an option for better tires. BUY THEM, either through the dealer or make you own deal for a new set. Lots of people simply wear out the first set, then when they re-tire, they get better performance tires.
Why would you want an already massive, torque-y and heavy V6 with an addition of a turbo powering an Accord? Do you know how illogical, gas-wasting and expensive that is? Sounds like enthusiast fun I guess, but it has no sense to it at all. You're probably the kind of guy that wants everything to have an option of a manual.
I dont have a problem with my 2017 TLX 3.5, has some kick to it. I slapped a Takeda intake ans so far the sound is nice, and oh yea i can see 6 cylinder camaros and mustangs on my rear view mirror💪
Michelin Primacy tires are great for what they're made for. They're great for comfort and in the rain, etc... A good bit of the understeer wasn't the tires' problem.
I bought one. I wasn’t sure about the front either. I used black matte plasti-dip on the chrome logos and that silly bronze grill trim. It looks so much better.
Yeah, this is what the TLX should always be. Interior is looking dated but- for the price and considering that a specked out Audi A3 will cost about the same- this is for those who endear to the montage "more bang for your buck"
This is an entry level luxury vehicle. It has just decent performance when compared to other cars which are designed to be sports cars from the ground up. Acuras may look similar, but the quality and driving feel is quite better than Honda. I’ve owned a salvaged 2007 TL from 70,000 miles to now, at 195,000. If I add up all my repairs bills (I self perform), it would be around $1,500. That’s five years of ownership. If you’re looking to win your street races, this car isn’t for you. But if you enjoy a comfortable ride, low maintenance, and entry level luxury, this might be a good option. Btw, don’t expect any complements from “car guys” if you’re driving this thing around town.
Do yourself a favor and don't get one. They have a terrible and extremely annoying vibration at highway speed around 70-75 mph. When you go to the dealer and tell them about it they will tell you its very slight and most people don't notice it. They will also tell you they cannot fix it. As for how Acura handles customer service...forget it. Client relations will tell you the car is designed to shake like that from the factory. They will tell you they are calling engineering and have no idea when they will hear back. As a further note they will also tell you to "exercise" your right under the consumer warranty act if you don't like they way they handle your claim. That is short for saying "sue us" without coming right out and saying it. Do yourself a favor and take my advice. On a positive note, the audio system is kickass and the AWD is nice.
@12:00 Yeah, those are grocery getter tires. I have Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ and the have tons of grip! And no, they're not uncomfortable, they're amazing! For a "performance sedan" Acura should have put better tires on them! It would translate into a better test drive and driver experience.
If my theory is correct, within the coming years, they should release a Type-S model with the new RLX's 378HP engine; similar to what they did w/ '07-'08 TL, they put the RL's engine in the type-s models of the TL. I'm crossing fingers here for their sake. They need a 300+ HP beast to even at least compete with the likes of an Infiniti Q50s or a Q60
One last comment, I for one, just one guy, would take Honda Quality Control over Audi any day of the week, though I admit Audi may be on a par, these days. But Honda/Acura has EARNED a reliability reputation--though I do realize that is not part of the review here. You mention an Audi handles better--probably true, but for me, it would be this car all the way.
It’s crazy that people don’t realize that Acura puts only the most reliable of tech in their products not necessarily the higher tech components Example : they found out the 1.5 turbo has issues so they’re not putting it in the new tlx or this the tlx next Gen so they decided to put the 2.0 in the new tlx/type a since they proved reliable in the 2018-19 accords..some tech in this car is old but proven to outlive new tech Look at Lexus sticking with the IS look and only changing very small things like front bumper.
I test drove a new one and got to a point where I had brake fade. That was a show stopper for me, sorry. As usual Honda fitted it with undersized brakes for that weight and engine power. For it to be competitive it should be between 330 and 350 HP.. I like luxury but I am more performance biased. I got a Q50 for a few dollars more.

I think the accord even has a better looking interior (both 9th and 10th gen). so what you are paying for actually is the SH-AWD. I own a 6-6 9th gen, and live in phoenix. no need for AWD. I drive it all year round on pilot super sports (sounds like an overkill for an accord but trust me it works brilliantly) and i love it.
Okay, guys, I have a question. When in sport + mode you don't have to use the paddle shifters like he did in the video? I thought they were necessary in that dynamic.

Namely the RS3 being so much quicker with better handling dynamics.
I don't see any benefit in this PAWS system which turns rear wheels when car is turning. For everyday driver it is useless. You never feel it during normal driving. You only feel it when the actuator which moves rear wheels fails and it costs $2,200 to replace (just one wheel)
Call me weird, but I like the way this car looks, a lot.

What’s better. The TLX vs Buick Regal GS!?
Dislike the front, like the rest. Performance wise I'd opt for the KIA stinger for the price.
Do have any idea when your getting your hands on the 2018 Regal GS? and see how it compares to the this TLX A SPEC
I don't see any benefit in this PAWS system which turns rear wheels when car is turning. For everyday driver it is useless. You never feel it during normal driving. You only feel it when the actuator which moves rear wheels fails and it costs $2,200 to replace (just one wheel)
It sucks that you’d have to rev it high to get an engine sound
