I honestly don't feel like Jerrod is going to give us the nuance and intelligence we're looking for around these topics, he is a man in the midst of crisis. He is unpacking a lot of trauma and is actively doing shadow work on camera for all of us to see, he probably won't be able to reflect on any of this properly for a very long time but we can see it because we aren't wrestling in the claws of HIS self loathing. Now what this man HAS done is woke up a very needed conversation about the lasting impact of childhood trauma and family rejection that many black gay people live with. It's long lasting, deeply, deeply wounding and, when one doesn't want to sit in that sadness, they wear it like a badge of pride instead, self harming or self medicating their way through life, convincing themselves that they're at the top of the world when we can all see them falling further and further out of reach. Jerrod almost had me feeling sorry for him with Tyler but he is not a good person, not a good friend, not a good boyfriend. I really dislike the interaction he showed with his dad- not to dismiss his dad’s past discretions but that was ugly.
The dad literally had a whole family and he was at school with a whole Sibling. That was INSANE. He actually let him off SOOOOO easy as he still looks after him.
@@RHJonTV Agreed but to ambush him on camera was not cool. His dad definitely needs to be held accountable & answer those questions. This is the 2nd or 3rd time Jerrod has included his dad’s affair in a special. It’s time to have the conversation off line.
I agree...Jerrod's dad needs to be held accountable...BUT OFF CAMERA!! That scene where he ambushed his dad with that line of questioning regarding his infidelity and other family was so hard to watch.
I completely agree. It was obvious that for his dad, his philandering is not something he's proud of and didn't want to talk about at all, let alone on camera. It might've been one thing if Jerod had warned him that he wanted to do this road trip with him and talk out all their issues, but it seems clear that that's not how Jerod sold it to him. His dad thought this was going to be a bonding trip for him and Jerod, but Jerod spent half of it trying to shock him with all the detailed descriptions of his sex life, and then sucker punch him by bringing up all his dad's f-ups. Even his father was like, we can talk about this, but why on camera? Seems to me Jerod is trying to absolve himself of all his shortcomings by publicly shaming and blaming his parents. They do need to be held accountable for their treatment of him, and for his father's infidelity and lies, but doing it on camera feels immature, exploitative, and self-serving. And from the many apologetic phone calls he had to make to friends, sounds like he's also a shitty friend and a shitty partner. On that note, can we talk about how he kicked his friend out by getting her an apartment (surprise!) but didn't bother to tell her he only payed for one month's rent? I just... Nothing in this show so far has endeared him to me, which is too bad, because I really loved Rothaniel.
These antics remind me of “Jackass”. It was funny to me…but I was also 25 years younger and dumber. There was another show on MTV that was a spin-off of “Jackass”, Bam Margera? (white people stuff) Anyways…he was always pranking his dad, and I HATED IT! He would destroy the house as if he were TRYING to give his poor mother a thrombo. The shows were successful, af…and started the biggest, dumbest trends of the whole 90s. Jarrod is the same age as me, and Inwill bet money that he was a “Jackass” fan…most guys (like him…nerdy) back then were. Sacrifice your family on camera is wild. There had to be a better way to have those conversations…even if still on camera…just not in an ambush. 👎🏾
@@jae15. one of the lead characters sells out her family to publish a best selling book. they end up forgiving her like nothing happened. and that wasn't the first time she betrayed them.
Was it reported that those shows were cancelled, specifically to make space for this one? Is that actually a thing? lol Let's drag Jerrod, but for stuff he's actually responsible for lol
Bo Burnham’s comments are so interesting because he had a show from 2013 called Zach Stone is gonna be famous where Zach (played by Bo) is trying to get famous and it explores where that instinct comes from (a significant sense of inadequacy being on of them) and how cameras and seeking fame negatively impacts his real relationships. I don’t know if that is something Jerrod is aware of or referencing that but it seems like a wild coincidence.
You're the first person I've heard even mention this Bo Burnham section - everyone is talking about the toes and Tyler the Creator, but that section is so important. Considering Bo Burnham's long time criticism of this style of media due to his UA-cam background. Like of all the people to ignore feedback from, but I guess it's the point. Doing it and knowing it's probably a bad idea, and doing it anyway but we have to keep asking what for?
I agree, we have to be extremely careful when we know how repressive, restrictive and even uninformed caregivers with good intent can delay the development and experiences of (young) people. Assuming age equates with experience puts a lot of people in dangerous spaces tbqh. we have to be a bit more critical in our expectations of people being settled beyond age. It isn’t to say we should force ourselves to delete our expectations or assumptions - just being more critical and attentive to it when it sprouts.
So far I watched the first 2 episodes and you articulated my sentiments perfectly. For me as a 33 year old gay Hispanic male who came out in my early 20’s, slept with a few people, had the “loss” of my mom not accepting me I had to learn to make adjustments for myself that were gonna fulfill me and nurture me for the better regardless of who stood by me. This time around I have a better sense of myself and who I am but it does feel awkward seeing Jerrod on screen, a man almost in his 40’s still having the sexcapades of a 20 something year old. Him introducing his bf reminds me of people who “celebrate” a 5 month anniversary. And maybe unbeknownst to Jerrod but not realizing the power that he has as you said with the cameras surrounding him and what that means for people entering his orbit, where most entering aren’t a Tyler that can sustain not getting sucked in vs those that are so shocked and amazed and then outta frame the next morning.
A lot of resentment builds up for your parents/family when you grow up in a homophobic household. I still don’t like and support Carmichael but I can relate as a gay black man.
Kim have you seen the indie film "Femme"?? It is tough to watch gay black men depicted as self destructive immature man-children, but the main character in "Femme" interestingly drew a lot of similarity to Jerrod's persona in this series.
I saw that film and I agree with you fully. It seems like Jerrod's behavior is giving "I desire sexual revenge on white men". Only in Femme the revenge was justified.
Honestly the way Tyler chases boys who are either not black or light skinned makes it seem like maybe he’s just too black for Tyler. I don’t want to say it like it’s fact based on mere speculation but I do believe that’s the case, not to say Jerrod deserved reciprocity nor would he know how to recieve it healthily even if it were reciprocated.
They both love white twinks so I dont know why Jerrod is out here playing it up as if he ever dated a black man or even showed interest in dating a black man.
Very much that, he's aware enough not to say 'I don't fuck niggas' anymore (like he used to in interviews back in the day) so he gaslights him instead with this 'you're my brother' bullshit
@@yaggayaggaya9918it couldn’t be he feels like he’s a brother to him and isn’t attracted to him in that way regardless of him being black or “too dark” ?? Like damn
I had no clue about this show until I opened TikTok… I almost took Jerrod’s side surrounding the Tyler scenes… and then I actually watched a few clips of the show, and got turned off by his performative behavior. I’m not gonna label him anything, but he does have some character development to do. He reminds me of me in 2018-2021… I came out in 2014 at 18, had to suppress myself for more years after until I ventured from home in 2018, attempted a very selfish hoe-crusade abroad, then returned home and continued my crusade, until I realized how emptying being so wayward feels. I’ve been celibate for going on a year and half now. I’m thinking about getting back out there and having some fun with healthier boundaries, but I’m also leaning toward just remaining inactive. I definitely see Jerrod actively trying to mold himself on a grand and monetized scale.
I agree. His approach to the first two episodes and the third in parts feels very exploitative. But BayBEE, wait until you get to episode FOUR, Kim. It gets MUCH worse
Your video analysis of 'Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show' is entertaining af! Never heard of the show, not really familiar with this young man but Kimberly Nicole Foster, you are a great storyteller. I was intrigued from the start! Thank you Kim!
So Kimberly this is the best take on the Show. I’ve seen on the internet so far. It was so fun listening to you and talking to you through the tv lol…. I loved your takes and I feel and see a lot of what you said. But I gotta be frank, I don’t think this a reality show like the Real World used to be. I think there’s are scenarios that happened in Jerrod’s life that’s he’s reenacting for the camera. To tell a board story of a black men who came out in his adulthood who is struggling with acceptance from his family and searching for identity. All things you touched on. While your observations are factual. I think we as viewers should extend some grace to Jerrod because he’s no different than any other human. And how would we react if it was our friend experiencing the same things off camera. And I hear folks saying that it would be different but in my experience I haven’t seen different. I actually see people shame folks like they did Jerrod for sharing our or having some of those same vulnerabilities shared. Like black men’s affinity or habit dating white people, black men’s need/desire for hyper sexuality, black men yearning for true acceptance of who they are fully. Gay or straight. I just feel they are all met with this expectation of needing to be perfect not open to their humanness. That could be some bullshit but that’s what I think. I’d love to hear anything you have to say in response.
Jerrod should have given himself some time as an openly gay black man in real life before trying to monetize off of being out for HBO. It’s like being gay has completely taken over his persona and frankly, he doesn’t have the range nor the experience to talk on said issues. Hence his backtracking on Dave Chapelle.
Regarding this topic I can't watch it As a black queer born male I understand what hes speaking about on his show and it's a painful reminder of my pass and Im not ready to face it But I get a lot of his sentiments but it required a lot of work and self healing But to be black and queer is more complicated than we like to really discuss and the rejection from your own people makes you explore parts of yourself that I don't think I wouldve explored had I felt safe as my authentic self in my own community Will watch but it's gonna take me a year or so to watch
Of course, and don’t rush yourself. Because the show is very raw. And can be at points, triggering. So take all the time you need to heal. And if in a year or two from now, you decide not to watch. That’s okay too. Doesn’t mean you’re too weak or anything of the sort. Just mean that this show isn’t for you, and that’s okay.
@@yaggayaggaya9918 oh it is. Especially the scene with the dad and Tyler. If you are someone who can’t handle confrontations or situations where you feel like a person is being mistreated this show is not for you.
@@gurlemo9720 I can't handle watching another black queer person yearning for their families love and being rejected for who they are I dabbled in the white spaces and it gave me an illusion of safety, but these are still yt men And it's just the idea of watching someone go through this is too real to close to home and I get it
You nailed this critique. Thank you. Saw four episodes last night. Told alla my friends watch it so we could talk. My black queerness thinks it's a brilliant show even as I find Jerrod unlikable, insufferable, and a brat. The brilliance lies in his insistence to be/and appear vulnerable. And stupid. And unreliable. And kinda anti-black. Alla that and I think he set out to punish his parents--and himself--from jump. It's not only awkward and mean-spirited (hurt people hurt people) it feels like something you would do to exorcise your demons, and he's doing it (well, a curated version of it) for the camera. I wonder if the idea for this show blotted out the sun and he HAD to do it to move on to other projects, you know what I mean? I'm going to watch the entire series because it's thought-provoking. I can't see a Gen Xer like me calling my mama a bitch. That's some Millennial -ish. Anyway, great job. You gotta great brain and heart and I hope you heal well from your surgery soon.
I almost felt sympathy for him this latest episode but I then realized he had no intention to bond with his Father, just film. Although the Father is trash, I think he genuinely wanted a moment to bond with
Sometimes people tell you who they are but we don’t want to accept it because we believe the their true form is a reflection on ourselves. Also, it will shatter our perception and truth, the story in our head that we want to believe.
I feel really bad for Jerrod having to deal with homophobic parents and the lack empathy people have for him dealing with that is gross to me (idgaf that he called his momma out her name honestly she’s a bigot who cares 🙄). But I also do not like the way Jerrod treats the bw in his life that actually do love him. They way he treats Jessica is disgusting to me
wow, girl, u really broached a lot of topics that r GREAT food for thought moments..! u deliver a perspective of Carmichael & the show that make me want to watch the show in order to expound on & delve into points u've made that present/represent a deeper narrative..! 1st-time viewer & i found this vid VERRYY interesting & satisfying!!
We don't know that. I still don't even know what Tyler is. And if it is true ..great, who would want to be wanted they way they apparently want these non black folks. I don't know what Tyler does, and Jerrod treats Mike like sex/emotional support/ toy.
Saying Jerrod “isn’t an effective cheater” is an understatement. He’s a rich and powerful abuser. And he preyed on Mike because he was vulnerable, as most rich men do, regardless of sexuality✨✨✨
I went to see Jerrod at a taping for this reality show over the Summer, and the things he revealed within the set were so dark that it was very clear he needs serious help. Even the crew seemed to be concerned about the direction of the show when he struggled through the set. I’ll be interested to hear how the show progresses but I probably won’t be watching tbh 👀
Kim my sentiments and feelings about these first two episodes or illustrated perfectly and so eloquently by you that I was rented speechless and screaming at the screen like yes girl like you were right here with me lol no but seriously though as a black gay man this is so horrifying to watch. I'm also from the South New Orleans and currently live in New York for the last 15 years and I've had a completely different growth experience although I'm not rich and famous I'm sure that as another layer but I find myself embracing not only my heritage but the beauty of my people that includes them and I'm attracted to. Yes I've had experience with white men and I don't have an issue with interracial love. But when there's the background noise of inner hatred? It just hits differently. It's so ugly it makes me feel dirty and nasty but I feel so heartbroken for everyone who's collateral damage in this whatever you want to call it LOL I'll keep watching and I'll definitely be watching more of your content because we want to know how you feel about it because you're one of my sounding boards. I love you love you love you keep up the good work
I love you and your take. I find it so intentionally jarring and we are made to see him as the villain. Him villainizing himself is very intentional. He is purposefully removing him self from a certain type of pedestal. This show is giving us so much to talk about Wether you like the show or not, we are all watching. I don’t feel sorry for him but I don’t think we were meant to.
Omg you're back. I got worried. I was like did I do something? I deleted my Instagram so I was stressing Hopefully by the end of the summer I should be able to afford your Patreon and king of reads Patreon I'm realizing if I can pay for Netflix I need to also pay for my sister's and brothers making fabulous thought provoking content
There are so many comments here that I don’t know if we have discussed that Jarrods voice was used on the transitions on Tyler’s ‘Igor’… there is something here. This project is giving ‘I’m Still Here’ Joaquin Phoenix’s 2010 mock-documentary in which he conceives a character and successfully convinces well known talk show hosts, Letterman amongst others, that he is becoming a rapper - the drama of this faux transformation playing out within the story. I think this may be as meta as that - it wouldn’t surprise me if this is a heightened version of his reality. Also, the full circle moments of Jarrod speaking about ‘Falling in love with his best friend’ when you think of the comment through the prism of ‘Igor’ and that character Tyler is summoning. All very interesting. I do think what you alluded to (constructing himself and playing it up for the camera) is what may be at play… it’s in line with the reality shows Real Housewives, Kardashian’s et al, where moments are contrived/scripted for entertainment. Just an Idea.
In regards to the commentary about his mom, I’ll never blame a kid for (justifiably) talking sh*t about their parents . People really don’t understand what it’s like sometimes to go through life, and especially your formidable years, under someone who is _supposed_ to love you unconditionally, acting as your enemy or biggest hater. We did not ask to be born, and life is already hard enough as it is. Or sometimes those who have had that experience still buy into that bs belief of respecting your parents no matter what. Fck that. Reaching out and “trying” now does not magically erase all the pain and heartache their actions and words caused. If I choose to still dog you out, deal with it. FOH Actions have consequences. These is them.
I’m getting secondhand embarrassment hearing all of this. This is what an Emmy winning writer who’s a COMEDIAN have to offer us?! I’m convinced he did something sus to get the Emmy because nothing is adding up.
i went ahead and watched the first 4 episodes of the show show after i saw some of your YT video and i’m not gonna lie i can’t stand it 😭😭😭 idc if the cameras help him he should not be putting his entire personal life on camera. like the ending scene in ep 4 w his dad was sad and i was on jerrod’s side (kinda???) but i was cringing the whole time bc he rly exposing his family history like that !!!!! 😭😭😭 insaneee
I disagree about the Grinder hookups not being able to say, "no". As someone who use to hook up with guys in my day, I always had a choice. I always could say no. And let someone tell me that there will be a camera crew and I have to sign a release and I would be like, nope. Most of the guys seem to not even know who he is. They didn't hide the cameras or the crew. Out of all the people on the show, I didn't feel awkward for any of the guys he hooked up with. They made a choice it wasn't based on love, power, or control, like you start to see with his boyfriend Mike. And to ask if they don't really have a choice is to say that these men are either too much of a slave to sex or to the possibility of fame. Because it wasn't because Jerrod was this famous powerful guy dangling a relationship or a job in front of them to get them to sign the releases. They stayed because they wanted the experienced, they wanted to have sex, they wanted to hook up. Jerrod could have been anyone to them, just as they were to him.
Tyler actually does make a Chris Brown reference on ‘Steak Sauce’ I keep hearing about this show and I don’t know if I want to watch it. I watch and enjoy Nathan Fielder’s morally dubious work, but Carmichael seems to be on a different level
I don't understand being in a relationship and actively cheating... with a whole camera crew there to record the deceit and the in your face lies. It's disturbing and diabolical. Smh.
Exactly my thoughts as usual you are very right! And I love how you saw that Tyler scene was also him kind.of counter performing...which I didn't catch but later I understood Tyler was not here for Jerod's bs
I’m glad I’m I not watching this mess. Bringing in your dates/hook up and cheating with your partner on camera? Not only that he sounds cruel and egotistical
I only saw the 1st eps of this reality show. I think the friend who wore the masked summed up much of the theme of the series. Public honesty on masturbatory. With Jarrod having the final edit. I find that interesting cuz much of how he portrayed is not favorable but also he is forcing the “honesty camera”onto people who have no control. So he may willing to be shown unfavorable doesn’t mean others are willing or ready to be revealed on that lvl. Much of that meet up with Tyler I was on Tyler side about why he didn’t communicate with Jarrod after he told him how he felt.
At 29:35 I became so overtly appalled and out done by the audacity of this man and the ego of him to not only be this way in real life but to SHOW IT to the world with such … openess is crazy as hell. He’s one of the worst people walking this earth. And as a person who just had to come to terms that my self loathe and self sabotage made me a terrible person to other people in this world throughout my 20’s I’ve had my come to Jesus moment I regret ALOT and I also have put my trauma out on social media for the world to see but NOT THIS EGOTISTICAL WAY!!! It was repentance it was release it was a way for me to forgive myself and to move on. I want to be a better person, he doesn’t … and that’s the really sick part to me. We’ve all been hurt a lot of us has had terrible lives and upbringings at the hands of family but in no way does that make it okay for us to bleed out on everybody else. Disgusting.
normal ppl take rejection and move along, but then there’s Jerrod Carmichael…. People don’t have to be with you if they don’t want too. To put Tyler in the situation and to try to make him look wrong for rejecting him is in a way evil. The guy told you no once.
Im sad that i feel he was hoping Tyler would go to the Emmys with him for a " viral" moment. I hope im wayy off but i know what awful shit publisists and managers ask of their cash cows. They would have no problem asking him to use his friend and some people ( most in hollyweird TBH) would exploit their closest friend for some more fame.

@@chelseashurmantine8153 YES!!! And Southside.
Ew. I feel like this could have been a tiktok series.
Was it reported that those shows were cancelled, specifically to make space for this one? Is that actually a thing? lol Let's drag Jerrod, but for stuff he's actually responsible for lol
He really lost me when he showed his dad a pic of his bf in underwear 🙄 who does that?
Bo Burnham’s comments are so interesting because he had a show from 2013 called Zach Stone is gonna be famous where Zach (played by Bo) is trying to get famous and it explores where that instinct comes from (a significant sense of inadequacy being on of them) and how cameras and seeking fame negatively impacts his real relationships. I don’t know if that is something Jerrod is aware of or referencing that but it seems like a wild coincidence.
😂😂”I’m big straight on that!” 😂 ☠️
You're the first person I've heard even mention this Bo Burnham section - everyone is talking about the toes and Tyler the Creator, but that section is so important. Considering Bo Burnham's long time criticism of this style of media due to his UA-cam background. Like of all the people to ignore feedback from, but I guess it's the point. Doing it and knowing it's probably a bad idea, and doing it anyway but we have to keep asking what for?
I’m counting on y’all to watch and review this show because I just can’t
“You’re too old” shouldn’t even be something people should be saying. We all live differently. There are no rules or deadlines.
Girl please some things people are too old to be doing. Periodt. Unless there is a special circumstance.
Shouldn't there be some standards and time limit on things? Just asking.
Exactly!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I’ll check it out!
Many people have guessed the same. Maybe a Jaden smith type might’ve pulled but not Jerrod
That were my thoughts. I feel like as straight black women, we could pick up on that because we’ve experienced the same within our community
Your avatar eats ❤❤❤ happy you’re feeling better!
I also really looooooved Tyler the Creator’s NPR Tiny Desk performance. The backup singers did their thing for sure
Your video analysis of 'Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show' is entertaining af! Never heard of the show, not really familiar with this young man but Kimberly Nicole Foster, you are a great storyteller. I was intrigued from the start! Thank you Kim!
Ikr...Im like "who"?
this was so well done im standing in my living room.... on my feet..... standing ovation...clapping
I'm careful about who I assign this label to, but Jerrod is really giving vulnerable narcissist.
Exactly that
I watched the episodes & I think he's a toxic narcissist. The way he treated his friends in episode 2&3 shows his toxic ways
If it isn’t all a “reenactment” do we still give him the same grace?
I’m surprised no one mentioned him saying that at 3 years old he was sexual with older kids.
Exactly 💯 he glossed over it. I don't think he realizes he was abused
Get better soon. We miss you face to face. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
Tyler's Tiny Desk is my absolute favorite!! I've watched it COUNTLESS times... I absolutely love it
I feel like those scenes with his dad was Jerrod trying to force that embarrassment and hurt that he felt as a child onto his dad.
Regarding this topic
I can't watch it
As a black queer born male
I understand what hes speaking about on his show and it's a painful reminder of my pass and Im not ready to face it
But I get a lot of his sentiments but it required a lot of work and self healing
But to be black and queer is more complicated than we like to really discuss and the rejection from your own people makes you explore parts of yourself that I don't think I wouldve explored had I felt safe as my authentic self in my own community
Will watch but it's gonna take me a year or so to watch
Of course, and don’t rush yourself. Because the show is very raw. And can be at points, triggering. So take all the time you need to heal. And if in a year or two from now, you decide not to watch. That’s okay too. Doesn’t mean you’re too weak or anything of the sort. Just mean that this show isn’t for you, and that’s okay.
Yeah I've been procrastinating watching this show heavy, it all seems VERY overestimulating.
@@yaggayaggaya9918 oh it is. Especially the scene with the dad and Tyler. If you are someone who can’t handle confrontations or situations where you feel like a person is being mistreated this show is not for you.

And it's just the idea of watching someone go through this is too real to close to home and I get it
You nailed this critique.
Although the Father is trash, I think he genuinely wanted a moment to bond with
As a gay black man, idk how I feel about the show. It’s very cringe.

Love your videos and the background!!
Do you know or have an idea why he would do it intentionally?

Ahhhhh Nicole, your creativity is so damn lovely. I hope you never stop.
FOH
Actions have consequences. These is them.
I'd be so keen to hear your take on the latest episode
That last conversation with his father (about him having another family)
Was intense
The rebrand of Tyler the creator is hilarious. Literal monster
I didn’t watch everything but I saw the clip with Tyler. I felt like Tyler was lured there under false pretenses

The other “them” KIMBERLY I CAN’T 😭😭😭
With in the black community theirs a lot of tramas we have to deal with and it continues in our adulthood.🔊👏🏿😮❤️🙏🏿🎯💯
Tyler actually does make a Chris Brown reference on ‘Steak Sauce’
I keep hearing about this show and I don’t know if I want to watch it. I watch and enjoy Nathan Fielder’s morally dubious work, but Carmichael seems to be on a different level
I don't understand being in a relationship and actively cheating... with a whole camera crew there to record the deceit and the in your face lies. It's disturbing and diabolical. Smh.

Much of that meet up with Tyler
I was on Tyler side about why he didn’t communicate with Jarrod after he told him how he felt.
Whatever Carmichael is doing this doesn’t seem healthy.

Disgusting.
I have no idea who this man or this show is but if Kimberly posts a review I will watch. 😅 all I can say about this man/show is what a mess.
normal ppl take rejection and move along, but then there’s Jerrod Carmichael….
People don’t have to be with you if they don’t want too. To put Tyler in the situation and to try to make him look wrong for rejecting him is in a way evil. The guy told you no once.
I suspect this is all an elaborate joke with a message behind it.
not too much with 1,000 being alot. XD some of us have bills to pay!
You gotta mention the fart lmao
