We just did a major declutter. We emptied two storage units!! No storage unit for the first time in 7 years. We had a massive garage sale sold most things for a $1 and we made $1500!! Then we donated the rest. And now we can park two cars in the garage and aren’t paying for storage anymore.

Since you’re used to paying for storage units … maybe redirect that
      $$ into savings 😀

My husband left me 9 months ago, I have gone through everything in my home and trashed or donated so much stuff. I had been holding on to an old Kirby vacuum cleaner. Finally this weekend I texted him asked him if he wanted it,because when we bought it he joked that if we get a divorce he wanted it. I told him that in the text, he never responded so I wrote back and said I put it in the trash. He then gave that response a thumbs up. Little did I know that me throwing it away was cathartic, the act of throwing it away was like throwing him out. I feel so much better, he’s gone and so is all the crap that reminded me of him. 😁

my ex passed away (we were separated at the time) and I threw away 99% of his stuff, and the stuff I kept was more things I thought the kids might like to have. The act of throwing away his things was probably more healing than any divorce could have been. And I got survivors benefits since we werent divorced yet LOL

Yep, I do find a certain amount of joy in our small, rented apartment. None of these extra rooms, and takes a fraction of the time to clean. I think downsizing is the new trend, instead of buying bigger and bigger homes.

I gave my adult kids 6 months after they finished tertiary education to get their stuff out of the house. They didn’t declutter before they moved. 18 months later, they were still refusing to come home and do it so I packed it all up and sent it to them (interstate). No one was happy with me but I was so overwhelmed and was also living with a hoarder who filled up the area the kids’ stuff was taking up after it was gone. I still believe it would still be here if I hadn’t have sent it to them 10+yrs later.

I did this too. Got a storage for three months as a courtesy for the family Member who was storing things in my basement. They freaked out because after five years of asking them to pick up their stuff I decided to do it for them. But now I can actually use my basement and I’m not depressed about my situation anymore.

When my husband died, nearly 8 years ago you couldn't park a kid's power wheels in our garage.
He was what you just talked about- have to take everything out and organize- and that meant it never got done. I spent a large part of that first year ( I was 70 yrs old) picking away...first I found out there was a floor under all that stuff. There were so many duplicates, because he couldn't find something... there were so many things that had never been opened, I made almost $300 returning things to Home Depot and Lowes.

    • @lisaa8795
      @lisaa8795 3 місяці тому +1

I understand what you must have gone through, my husband died earlier this year. He was a bit of a packrat, kept lots of stuff because parts of things "might come in handy some day" but he was nice enough to arrange for a big haul-away of large items just before he got really sick. I'm one to talk, have entirely too many furniture pieces, clothes and media items (books, dvds, cds) and am slowly selling off my stash. It's not going as quickly as I'd like, but I am a boomer after all, so not getting any younger.

We just decluttered our attic, did it about 6 months ago, and just did it again. We moved to our first house with a 1 month old baby, and our family that helped us move basically moved most of our unidentifiable boxes of crap to the attic at our request. The first time through the attic was miserable. The second time felt amazing. The main room is now basically empty, and we’re considering moving our office up there to make it a really cool usable space.

On the question about three rooms of grown kids items. Here is my tip, next holiday or gathering at your house, give each person a box/bin, post it pad and pen. Tell them to put anything they want to keep in the box and take it with them that day. If there is something large that they cannot take that day, like a chair or other furniture, put a post it note on it with a date by which they will pick up, or drop off, etc the item and then everything else goes away. If they need two boxes that's fine, but those boxes have to leave with them that day. No exceptions. Then you can donate or throw out anything else left behind.

This would also work great for clearing out a house for a deceased family member that way people can limit the arguments over physical stuff. I work in a nursing home and you should hear the stuff people argue about while their elderly family is at the end of life. People forget hearing usually the last thing to go so as they're dying they can hear everything they are saying around them

Removed over 100 items for this week and it's only Monday pots, plants, rubbish, empty boxes, broken items, old gardening stacks, bag of hardened cement, items removed that have been dumped put were they go. whooooo!!! for body doubling. Thanks Cass you are the QUEEN of DECLUTTERING you help us get the job done. the dump pile is getting big. will get one of my son in-laws to take to dump when we need it gone.

This is a huge coincidence as I got rid of some of these things a couple of weeks ago! Cleared out most of the camping gear, sold our MASSIVE tent on ebay for a good chunk of money, and gathered the majority of stuff left over, put it in a box (like a camping stove, plastic plates, water bottles, stove kettle) and sold it on fb marketplace for £25 and a camping table for £10! I got rid of old swimsuits before going on holiday last week, and when I was on holiday I took all my mini cosmetics, and all the half used mini handcreams etc and used them up while on holiday! I also got rid of so many pots from the garden last month, someone took them all for free!! 😀 oh also we used our firepit (on the one weekend it was nice weather) and burned ALL THE OLD WOOD and an OLD BENCH! It's gone!! I'm in the UK and it's been raining so much, so I'm glad I don't have this stuff any more as it's not being used

I have been supporting community service organizations for most of my life. So, now it is hard to ask for help. But, I have learned that it makes other people feel good to help those who need it. I am now learning to ask for help.
Also, I am going back to my Slob Sisters Basic Week Plan which includes a Deep Cleaning day. This will be my appointment for decluttering part of my kitchen and part of my office each week. This may seem like procrastination to most people, but if it is scheduled it is more likely to get done. I do save large boxes for my donations, then give my daughter a chance to see what's there. If she doesn't want it, it goes to Goodwill or my local Hospice thrift store.

Of course I’m still placing things in the recycling bin, disposing of sharps and medications responsibly, taking electronics to the tech recycling place, etc., but I need that reminder that it’s ok to put the old pool noodle in the trash (that I don’t have to refashion it for it’s second life as door stop or coffee table bumper pad for some day grandchildren). I also need that reminder that things don’t have feelings (that a broken toy won’t be depressed if it leaves the cozy box where it hangs out with all its friends in the bonus room). Your posts are so very helpful. thanks Cas.

My husband tried to get me to throw stuff in drawers without folding them for years. I always resisted. After I found your channel, I took your quiz and found out I’m a lady bug. I decided to start throwing underwear and towels in bins. And now I’m hooked! If it’s not hanging up, it gets thrown in the drawer or a bin. So much easier to put away laundry. We have also decluttered to the point where everything has a home. It leaves me more time to hang out with my toddler without worrying about tedious tasks and stuff shuffling.

😆Didn't have any of the 20! Part of that is my ongoing decluttering, but a bigger part is that I don't have a garage. Garages seem to be clutter magnets, and it has been such a relief not having one. (I live in a condo with underground parking). But listening to the list did remind me of a spinmop I have that works great but I don't use, so I'll be donating that today!

I* have been working on my dad's house since I moved in with him. I got rid of most of my furniture except for my bedroom and a couple special pieces I could fit in. His house is small and was sooooo cluttered. My mom complained about her mom keeping everything when they had to have their estate sale, but she was just as bad. You could bare walk around in the garage and basement and had to park outside. I did not have garage at my house, so I wanted my new car in that garage. Truckloads of stuff has gone out of here donated to Lupus foundation and Vets and both cars are in the garage. A lot of things have been gone from basement and many others put into container up on shelves. Long way to go yet but getting there. My daughter may move her stuff in the basement to her father's house. His basement is dry and mine is damp, so I am thrilled. Half the basement will be emptied is she moves her stuff out. Fingers crossed. Chipping away at it.

Kid toys: I keep the outdoor toys for the most part in a large deck box. Balls go into a tall laundry basket in the garage. Indoor toys are in/on a tall book shelf/cabinet. Each child has their own space and their stuff needs to fit there. And great use of under bed storage.

You inspired me to get rid of an eye shadow pallet that I didn’t like but felt like I should keep it anyway. And the fluffy eye shadow brush I got for it. It made me feel bad every time I used it and didn’t like it. So now I feel better cause it’s no longer taunting me.

I was holding onto camping equipment, because "one day we might go camping." My son wanted to set up the tent, and I unfolded it to discover 1) Mice had made a home in it, chewing as they went, and 2) the elastic in the tent poles had disintegrated. Into the trash the whole thing went.

so wonderful and funny. I finally needed the laugh about the garage and how the men of the house will never notice the 4 years not even used, as they had no idea about the bugs that love boxes of cardboard in there....the tons of awful tools too hard to use at our age 70plus and the awful extra suitcases they left open. You push in the best way to those who say too many "what if I might ..." thank you always, dear "Clutterbug" lady!

I just found you and you’ve really motivated me.
This morning i timed myself cleaning my kitchen and doing laundry! ( 20 minutes total!)
I also started my 5 category paper organization!
I cleaned out a drawer to house my flower farming business records.
i decided to have a “ basket by the door” on a narrow table to put things that need to go to my car and to have a place for my grandkids and their families to find things they have left at my house.
I know myself, I lose motivation, so i’ll be tuning in regularly!

I have chronic pain...it sucks! But 2 to 3 times a day I set a timer for 5 to 10 minutes and do what I can. My house is so much better for it. Many times, I end up going over the timer. For me, I just have to get up and start and most times I feel better doing a few small things. I plan larger jobs like going through paper, clothes etc. while sitting down. Bigger things get delegated to my husband or son. Thankfully I have a wonderful husband that does help with everything.

The polystyrene in the cardboard boxes is a major project in itself. I had a few days dedicated to hunting and breaking it down (no kids here) and vacuuming the lounge afterwards. I ended up having about 3 full car loads and it took about 3 months to put it in the bin. Rubbish bins in Oz are half the size of the recycle bins and you can’t break the foam down into really small pieces.

My in-laws had 8 adult children that had items left at home when they moved out of state, etc. They gave a deadline to pick up or it was all going to donation so they could convert the space into a family room: everyone could enjoy when they visit. Most showed up from out of state, etc. and the rest was donated. At that point if it wasn’t important to the adult children it wasn’t important. It worked!

We wrapped our flat screen tv in blankets and quilts, taped it and it went in a shipping container. It was stored in the blazing heat and cold/damp for 2 years before we moved it into our house. It was older, so we weren't fussed if it didn't make it. It's still working. The thing is 15 years old. Flat screen boxes aren't precious. What is it that makes you feel decluttering is necessary? For me it is PAPERWORK. I am German and I am a civil servant and hoarding old paperwork is definitely MY bad habit. I also could let go of some books and of some furniture.

I’ve just demolished 2 large rotting aviaries and have started breaking down the recycling and rubbish. The trick is to not fill up the car for the recycling centre as you don’t want to damage the car with wire, etc. and just do more trips. Didn’t realise how much stress they added to my visual clutter threshold. Now I’m just doing a session of breaking the trash down every few days to prep it for the bin or a recycle trip.

I don't know exactly how many coolers at home, but in any case, none is mine, they are my parent's. See, that's how coolers work in my country. When you are a parent, you buy coolers and you give it to your children full with food. Then they eat the food, and they forget about bringing the cooler back, so you buy more coolers that you give to your chldren full with food. And repeat.
Jokes aside, I'm so grateful to my parents for keeping an steady suply of coolers all these years.

1 thing about camping gear. You may want to keep for emergencies. If you don’t have heat due to winter storms, set up the tent in a living room and you can keep your family warm. Also great if you need to evacuate. Some decluttering items can go into a bin for emergency evacuations.

I am definitely a perfectionist and I've been trying to remind myself that there are certain times where I want to make sure I do things well (for example, my dad is a contractor and we don't take shortcuts with home renovations, etc.) but it's ok to be less-than-perfect and take shortcuts on other things. It's a balance between the effort and the outcome. My former boss/mentor always used to say that we are always juggling a number of balls and some of those balls are rubber and some are glass. We need to keep the glass balls in the air, but sometimes it's ok to let the rubber balls BOUNCE.

If you want the right size and functional tubs and furniture, make them. I’ve made several pieces of furniture and under bed storage. I was amazed the storage boxes held 2.5 times the amount than the nearest sized tubs. They were only a couple of inches wider and longer than the tubs.
