As the boys grew up, so did the rest of us...but I'll never stop looking back now and then to see the fun and sad times we all had. Madness played a huge part in my life. And always will. ❤

Me too lads . My school dinner lady was called Cathy Bedford, the mother of Mark Bedford from Madness. It was about 1978-79 she gave us all us kids badges, with nutty 7, the big M with a pork pie hat on top, and all other deisgns. She told us all that was her sons band, and we would hear about them soon. Little did we know..... I wish I kept those badges. But great memories. Still listening to them now.

Madness are real musicians, not the run-of-the-mill music industry fodder with trust funds. Hardworking musical geniuses disguised as goofballs. The song “Our House” has been in my head this week, because it still blows my mind how it gets right under my skin and sounds eternally familiar. Only a group of uniquely experienced & talented professionals could pull something like that off. All these years later and I appreciate them more than ever.

So poignant because they had peaked and were on their way out as this came out. I find it even more poiganant because my grandfather passed away the day after I heard this song for the first time. My grandfather was a wonderful man and I still miss him now. I can't watch this video without thinking of him.

Yes, I remember that feeling they were hanging on despite being in danger of answering the description in the title. But I thought this was good. I never saw the vid on TOTP, just a clip from it in the countdown. And I never heard it on the radio more than twice, but it was catchy enough to remember on that. Brilliant record, but less successful than the follow-up "Uncle Sam" which I thought was a tad mediocre.

@*Uncle Joe* The real trouble with this country, in my opinion, assuming you are talking about Mrs Thatcher, is we should have had two Poll Taxes. One for the very rich say pay £100, and the poor pay about 5 or 30p. Or every country whose turn it is, to run the EU, treat it like a General Election, be the governing economy, for every five years.

    An insolent speck of youth
    Being taken for a walk
    So tightly by the ear
    That he can hardly talk
Yesterday's men, hang on to today
To sing in the old-fashioned way
It must get better in the long run
Has to get better in the long run
    A metropolitan marathon
    Marathon
    Has been held today
But who you need to catch
Will be coming the other way
Yesterday's men, hang on to today
    To sing, any old way
It must get better in the long run
Has to get better in the long run
Because when you're told to start
    How far can you go?
    When your race is run
    And you already know
Because when you're told to stop
    Stop!
    How far will you go?
    When your race is run
    And you already know
Yesterday's men, hang on to today
    Hang on
    To sing, any old way
It must get better in the long run
Has to get better in the long run
Will it get better in the long run?
Will we be here in the long run?
    (Saxophone)
    Do-do-do-do-do-do
    Hang on
    Yesterday's men, hang to today
    Hang on
    To sing, any old way
It must get better in the long run
Has to get better in the long run
Will it get better in the long run?
Will we be here in the long run?
    Do-do-do-do-do-do
    Hang on
    In the long run.

I often feel bitter sweet about this song. I was eighteen when this was a hit and wonder if Madness (who were one of my favourite bands knew it was going to be one of if not their very last big UK hit. It wasn't as big as their earlier stuff in terms of chart position but in my opinion it's actually one of their best all time top 3 songs. The other 2 are in my opinion Wings Of a Dove and the incomparable My Name (is Michael Caine).
So many great songs sung irreverently but with such serious messages and undertones that they still resonate today. I was ecstatic to hear they still perform live sometimes.

MrPeterpiper1969 Is 1969 the year you were born, Mr Piper? Cos if it is, you were 15 instead of 18 when Yesterday's Men was a hit. I know so cos I was born in 1969. But you are right, it's one of their many best songs. The b-side to this song, a song called "All I Knew" is also very good. Madness is far better than a lot of people aka music industry and critics give them credit for.

Greatest1979 I could've sworn this was an '87 release not '84 mate. Other than that I completely agree, they were a fabulous band who never got taken quite as seriously as they deserved to be.

Exactly. But believe me Yesterday's Men, Uncle Sam and Mad Not Mad all have been released in 1985. I know so cuz i've bought all their records back then. In 86 they released Sweetest Girl and Ghost Train and broke up. In 88 four of them came back as The Madness!

Hi Ray Booster, I am from India and that song from 0.03 to 0.44 is "bar bar dekho hazar baar dekho" from the 1962 Hindi Language Film 'China Town'. It is a classic film starring yesteryear heartthrob Shammi Kapoor and this song was sung by The Voice (Indian) Mohammed Rafi. Both have passed away, Rafi Saheb, sometime back and Shammi Kapoor recently. Any song of Rafi Saheb picturised on Shammi was not only to be heard, but also to be seen because of Shammi Kappor's crazy dance moves and mannerisms. To sample another Mohd. Rafi song, try this, "jan pehchan ho" used in a Heineken Commercial. But no, it does not have Shammi Kapoor. Read the comments there too! And yes, I am sorry I am late in posting this. All the best.

As I remember it, this was received as something of a post Madness comeback record after all the earlier 80's success. It was certainly viewed that way by all my Nutty Boy mates who'd followed their every move up until this more mature sounding release. I wasn't a Madness officionado at all, more a Simple Minds/U2 kind of a guy but thought this was a tremendous, inward looking, soulful tune and still love it now. A bit like Duran Duran's 'Ordinary World' lyric a few years later, to me it was about getting slightly older and looking back at former glories, with an eye to moving on. God knows if that's what either song was about but it made sense to me in my mid teens era back then.

Amen to this observation. Back in the day, I used this track as therapy as a college kid frightened to f#####g death of the future. I'm still here. It worked. I salute Madness today and forever more.

This is true, 1983 was their peak, when 83 turned into 84 they found themselves out of step with the U.K. pop world and it was a slow decline until the split in 1986.

The melody in this is just beautiful. The lyric makes me wonder if they felt they were buring out at that point as a band trying to keep on top of the charts. I suppose they had to live up to the 'nutty boys' image with the comedy video but it takes away from the song which to me calls for a more contemplative and simple treatment. This song is highly underrated as well as well as many other songs they wrote.

    • @blackmore4
      @blackmore4 7 років тому +8

Yes, apparently they did feel 'burn out'. Funny now but this and a lot of the parent 'Mad not Mad' LP were all about weariness and ageing... written in their 20s!

They'd had hit after hit for 6 years by that time, starting with The Prince in 1979.

    • @robertstorey7476

Totally agree. Clowning around just doesn't suit the song. The song is generally a thoughtful reflection on how we all too soon become yesterdays men but have to carry on with life anyway. It was surely inspired by how they saw themselves as the end was in sight for the band as a major force.
