As a veteran and now clinical therapist, and all around observer of this jacked up occupation we live under, nothing but facts stated here. Dissociated psyches are easy to program. But to a degree I feel like some of us came with the warrior spirit and the military provides that outlet. Epic discussion.

When kids grow up in horrific situations and poverty they learn how to survive. They stop being children. They stop crying and they focus on doing what needs to be done to survive. They are learning how to recon tasks, how to troubleshoot problems, how to maintain silence, how to not give away their position or secrets, they are learning how to run psyops missions. When you live with monsters you learn how to recognize them and how to survive.
When your back is to the wall you keep your fists up and you protect your face and belly. Mentally you live in a hyper paranoid state of fight or flight to be ready at a moments notice.
You learn what pain is. You learn how to disassociate from present suffering and you push through whatever is happening in your present and deal with it later when the brain allows you to deal with it later in safety.
You learn critical thinking skills and you learn how to keep functioning while horrific things are happening all around you.
Those kids who have lived in a protected state in childhood have not had the time and years of experience to develop these skills. In war or a battle they would suddenly be forced to do so in real time. This would cause freezing, paralysis, confusion, inability to make decisions, severe mental trauma. And people like this are dangerous in war when you have to focus and have a clear head.
This is why I don’t trust Officers who have had a protected life. It should be mandatory to work and live among privates as a private for several years before being allowed anywhere near a rank where you are in charge of people’s lives. This is the minimum. It won’t come anywhere close to what a hardened troop has developed over time but it’s a start. Triggers the brain to stressors and starts the mental hardening process of resiliency and grit before being tossed into a meat grinder.
Edit: I know the creators don’t read these comments. But maybe some kid with childhood trauma is.
Kid, you are better and stronger than you know. You are tougher than your upbringing and you are valuable. Go out into the world and make it a better place. Make it better for all the kids who did not survive.
And Kid, pick up a book any book, comic, newspaper and start reading. Read anything and everything. Reading more than any other task will serve you in more ways than I can tell you.

I've had this discussion too many times. I'm an ex therapist, adult child of a Vietnam vet and friend to a few SF and SOF vets. I've studied and come to the conclusion that it's nearly impossible to become that elite WITHOUT some heavy childhood mental, emotional and/ or physical trauma. Those that have not been properly protected would be willing to give their lives for strangers and are able to compartmentalize so efficiently to survive. Rising Above is exactly what needed to be written. Can't wait to buy the next. They'll be passed on to those in need. Promise.

I would look deeper into the person who does those high risk jobs. A higher risk job choice can be correlated to early life high risk environments.

The DoD doesn’t put that much time or effort into anything. People will go where they go within the military. No one is plucking a certain personality type for a job, the person will gravitate there naturally.

Yet, these are the states that produce the most Navy SEALs. Interesting, eh?
