Dragonsteel, which you’re holding now, is a good book-but, like a lot of my work during that era (1990's), is erratic at the same time. The various parts of it never quite clicked together. Despite my subversions, it played into a little too many of the fantasy tropes of the ’80s and early ’90s for my taste. It just didn’t quite land.
This book exists in a strange half-canon state. A lot of the lore is still relevant-indeed, though during the writing of Elantris the Cosmere was unformed, by Dragonsteel I had a lot of the ideas in mind that would eventually get used in Mistborn and become full canon. You could call this the first real Cosmere work.
However, I’m still proud of this book. Rough though the writing is, nascent though the ideas may be, the ambition is there-and the seeds of what I would become as an author, sprouting alongside the seeds of what would become the modern Cosmere.Once I hoped this would be the book that made me famous. Today it is but a curiosity. Fortunately, it is an interesting one. I hope you enjoy your first trip to the planet Yolen.

Just finished chapter 20. Here are my thoughts:
As the story goes on i find it more and more regrettable that Ryallas story probably won't be adapted into anything. There is nothing like it currently in the cosmere. Sure we've seen slavery but never a personal servant. Courteth is also a great villain.
I dont care as much about jerick's story. It was much more interesting in the beginning chapters when he was still learning
I love bat'chor. He's like a combination of Rock and Galladon. Although i dont think the chapters involving him really work. I didn't find the scenes with him and topaz stealing things exciting. They were funny, though i would probably cut them.
I can definitely see how topaz evolved into Hoid. Although, in this, he seems like a combination of Hoid's sense of humor and Kelsier's sense of justice.
Cool book so far. I like it more than elantris. Its strange how much better the politic sections are in this book
