Dragonsteel, which you’re holding now, is a good book-but, like a lot of my work during that era (1990's), is erratic at the same time. The various parts of it never quite clicked together. Despite my subversions, it played into a little too many of the fantasy tropes of the ’80s and early ’90s for my taste. It just didn’t quite land.
This book exists in a strange half-canon state. A lot of the lore is still relevant-indeed, though during the writing of Elantris the Cosmere was unformed, by Dragonsteel I had a lot of the ideas in mind that would eventually get used in Mistborn and become full canon. You could call this the first real Cosmere work.
However, I’m still proud of this book. Rough though the writing is, nascent though the ideas may be, the ambition is there-and the seeds of what I would become as an author, sprouting alongside the seeds of what would become the modern Cosmere.Once I hoped this would be the book that made me famous. Today it is but a curiosity. Fortunately, it is an interesting one. I hope you enjoy your first trip to the planet Yolen.

I just finished reading it. I was gutted when it ended knowing the story in that form won't have a continuation.
Wait, u finished the whole thing in a day???
@williamsshane1342 it took me a few weeks. It was available to a down load for a while. I wish had time to read a book over a full day
We'll have to wait for Dragonsteel Canon and hope it picks up at least some of the threads
Absolutely love this book. 😢 wish this book series would be finished.
I thought it was a great story! Thanks Brandon. I would prefer a continuation, of course
I wonder if it was a mistake to listen to this before reading stormlight....
I'll come back to this in a few months and let you guys know.
Also this was the very first audiobook I've ever listened too and I'm really glad I gave it try. Loved this story.
Honestly don’t get all the comments here frustrated that this is only one book- or that it wasn’t published. Absolutely loved it- but if he’d published this we would have never gotten stormlight- or at least not in the same way. Just remember, as awesome as Jeri is- Kaladins bridge 4 is so much better. I’m glad this story built the foundation for our stormlight archive- instead of being published as is.
Just finished and loved it.
Yes the parts of it don't click together (we go from learning to be a scholar to fighting in the eternal war very quickly( and I am a bit horrified by the amount of character death.
Yes the shattered plains arc was done better in the Way of Kings.
But it was still a good book that mad me hooked from start to finsih.
Damn, this is much longer than I expected
To be fair, it's so a Sanderson
What is the next book after this?
Why didn't he publish this?
He briefly mentions it in the Acknowledgements section 1:28:24
Mostly because editors and publishers didn't want to publish it and he didn't try again later because he acknowledges that the quality isn't up to his current writing standards. Also because it isn't canon to the Cosmere since it was basically an early draft only starting to explore those things. He is going to re-write the story of Dragonsteel sometime in the future to make it fit with the Cosmere that's in his published works. Cephandrius/Hoid/Topaz will be the main POV character. It will focus on the Shattering of Adonalsium and exclude things like the Shattered Plains that he included better versions of in other canon books.
Man, early Sanderson is bleak tonally.
🥲 I almost like him more then kaladin
Ok but this being a book 1 shouldve been mentioned at the beginning i thought i waa getting a full story
