Made my wat down there somehow with a mate ( we'd just finished at uni). Don't even know how we met up tbh, he was coming from London and I was coming from North Wales, no mobile phones...I guess we had skills then we have since lost! Either way, the Minds were probably beyond their zenith by then, but my word they were, and still are a formidable live act!
I was there. Incredible. They are still a great band but back in the day they were something else. They have never been given the recognition they should have as one of the best live bands ever!
This brings back incredible memories. The bridge in Real Life in part 1 of this post gives me chills every time. Just listen to the crowd during that bit going apeshit. I had to laugh when listening to this on Radio 1 (and taping it of course!) a week after seeing them at Maine Rd. The bass during the intro to Big Sleep had almost split my chest apart then, and hearing it distort the sound on the FM broadcast seemed priceless!) I made a double cassette box for the tapes by putting two together with super glue. The boxes were clear, I recorded it on SA tape bought specially for the purpose and I took it round with me on my paper round for weeks afterwards grinning like the Cheshire Cat I was - as I relived it whilst gleefully banging copies of the Manchester Evening News through all the letterboxes.
I was there... what a night and what a performance by Simple Minds. especially Belfast Child. Thanks for uploading this and bringing back the memories.
Nearly 23 years ago Derek. Tempus Fugit! You are right they were presented with a "Q Award" for "Best Live Act" in 1991 as voted for by the readers of "Q Magazine". Well remembered! Some year with R.E.M. and Nirvana on the scene!

Awwwww Adam. Just found this gem. You are a similar age to me. I was 18 at the time and it was my first concert. That day will live with me forever.
