Recorded at Barrowland, Glasgow, 5th January 1985.
This is the last of the 3 New Year gigs the band were performing and recording. A live album was supposed to appear but only 4 tracks have ever been released.
This is a Malcolm Beaton master recording. Thank you! 👍
Songs are:
01. I Travel
02. Glittering Prize
03. Book Of Brilliant Things
04. Up On The Catwalk
05. Speed Your Love To Me
06. Promised You A Miracle
07. Celebrate
08. Someone Somewhere (In Summertime)
09. The American
10. East At Easter
11. Waterfront
12. New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) - [with Bono]
I wish I could have been there to listen live! Almost 50 years old and SM changed my last 42! What a band! What a gig! The last track with Bono gives me goosebumps every time. THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing!
Wat a band back then fantastic happy days
Great gig, the legendary 3 ... Up On The Catwalk - for me the best version of it ever, Charlies guitar, amazing! Thanks for posting
100% agree, the best version hands down. Dripping with atmosphere.
Nice one - classic Minds - I recorded the 2nd of the 3 Barrowlands gigs using Sony Walkman Professional and an Aiwa directional microphone onto Maxwell Gold cassettes ..... gig was longer than 90 minutes - must master these and upload them here! In a twist of fate my now wife was at the same gig - but we did not meet until 20 years later
As I work from home I’m going through a lot of Minds live stuff, most of which I used to have on cassette back in the day - its great! A cool twist of fate, great to have that link! If you master night 2 could you let me know? Cheers!
this is stunning
Liz McGarry Glad you liked it Liz. I was at the night before and enjoyed it a lot.
Some new versions of old favourites!
All the best and bye for now.
This is AMAZING!!! I have a soundboard boot of this that sounds like trash! The only sounds I’ve ever known from this concert were from that muffled, crap recording that was missing I Travel and Someone, Somewhere... this recording offers a totally different perspective! Fantastic!!!
Hi there Scott. Glad you enjoyed this recording. I had a cassette that was labelled Mixing Desk as well but it definitely wasn't. Did yours sound anything like this?

There are some 30 Seconds clips on here thanks to Ronnie Gurr.
Would love a complete soundboard some day!
All the best.
I think this was the last ever gig performed by the 'classic' SM lineup of Kerr, Burchill, McNeil, Forbes and Gaynor - quite poignant.
Starting at 22:05, this version of Up On The Catwalk with the squeal a half minute later sounds like the version on the back of a 45 I bought in junior high.
ETA: It is from this recording, evidently edited a bit.
I travel version is anticipating ghostdancing : amazing
It's because I travel and Ghostdancing have same of structure to the lyrics so the band decided later to make Ghostdancing of this different verion of I travel!
i travel = black is black aussi

The legendary version of New Gold Dream (86-87-88-89) feat. Bono.
Mick Macneil is textbook on those synths. Definitely prefer these kind of recordings over some of their studio stuff though being honest.
John 95 Same here John. I prefer most of the live recordings to the studio ones. Mick is a real class act and was such an integral part of the band back then. To be honest I do miss him when I go to see the band live these days. No disrespect to Andy G and Mark T who are both great musicians. Just something about Mick and his style of playing!
Take care John, all the best and thanks for commenting.
Thanks for uploading this gig, incredible quality!
Do you have Big Country from the Barras 1986 by any chance?
@alanstephen67 sorry but I don't! I take it this was another goody? Daft question, of course it was, it was Big Country!
@ArtAndTalk indeed it was. They were another great live bsnd. I used to have the june 1986 tapes they were also good quality.
@alanstephen67 I'll see if I can get a copy for you. Not promising anything, but here's hoping! Bye for now and all the best!
Thanks for posting what a night it was ....
Its always summertime in glasgow..... was it this night ?....or the one before that was a double white vinyl boot....back in the day?
***** It was the night before Tom. It got released on double vinyl LP and then double CD as "Summertime In Glasgow". That's why I put this night's gig up, to give people the chance to hear the full concert on the 5th.
Thanks and all the best to you!
1st track was nore a ghost dancing mashup than I travel!...
Had definitely morphed into it completely by the time they played Live Aid later in the year.
Jim's voice is so strong.
It is mesmerizing...... the depth is so DEEP.... it gives the power to his voice; the power of LOVE.
I was there for all 3 nights and they blew the roof of Barrowlandsssssss
I was there too for the 3 nights, great gigs
I was at this what a night best night ever, thank you for posting it as I had started to think this never happened lol
+MICK2474 It did happen and you're most welcome. Hopefully one of these New Year gigs will be released in complete form officially.
All the best!
Bono doing his usual shouting and bawling
Simply an astonishing band at the top of their game around this time
