    About The Killers:
The Killers are a Las Vegas-based four-piece who formed in 2003, featuring the talents of singer/keyboardist Brandon Flowers, drummer Ronnie Vanucci, guitarist Dave Keuning and bassist Mark Stoermer. The band has received countless accolades for their artistic achievement, including multiple Grammy nominations, American Music Award nominations, MTV Video Music Awards, NME Awards and more.Their first album, Hot Fuss, was released in 2004 to worldwide acclaim. The album contained the singles “Mr. Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me,” in addition to the anthemic song “All These Things That I’ve Done,” which has since been referenced by the likes of U2 and Coldplay. The band toured for two years straight behind Hot Fuss, playing more than four-hundred shows, and eventually returned to Vegas to begin to work on the follow-up album with legendary producers Alan Moulder and Flood. The result, a love letter of sorts to their hometown entitled Sam’s Town, was released in 2006 and spent forty-two weeks on the Billboard Top 200.A b-sides collection entitled Sawdust was released in 2007, followed by their third studio album, Day & Age, which was released to widespread critical praise in 2008, anchored by massive single “Human.”The Killers released Battle Bornin September 2012, which saw them expanding their world tour into countries they’ve never visited before, and finally were honored to perform at the world-renowned Wembley Arena, one of the most monumental and significant shows of their career. After a decade of making music, in November 2013, The Killers released a “Best Of” collection, Direct Hits, which featured two incredible new songs alongside classics from the band’s revered catalogue. The band, who have sold over twenty-five million albums worldwide, and headlined all of the world’s top festivals (Coachella, Lollapalooza, Glastonbury), released their newest studio album, Wonderful Wonderful, in September 2017, where it landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart the week of its release, as well a stopping the charts in the U.K. and Australia. The album is the band’s fifth consecutive number one in the U.K., and Brandon Flowers’ seventh U.K. number one overall.

The message is clear for anyone who feels like listening. Unfortunately, the wrong people are in charge of the world at the moment and it isn't getting any better. One of the few bands to have the balls to stand up and say it in all it's painful damning truth.

Can I reply with a song by Queen + Paul Rodgers?
«I believe we need a hero to step boldly from the shadows
You believe there must be someone on the scene that fits the bill
A man or a woman who knows how to say "I'm sorry"
With courage in his heart to match his creed
A leader who can build a brand new morning
And match the tide of changes
Match the intent with the deed»
And we need to vote for him/her.

4 years later its just as powerful and urgent a message , yet we as a country still have made little to no progress, too many think everythings fine as it is. I Hope Brandon Flowers continues to shout it from the rooftops, and use his presence on the world stage to try to drive the point home.

I think people forget that there are countries like Honduras or Venezuela where the situation is so dire and desolate, that it’s either run or be killed. I personally know people who have crossed the border illegally because, well it was either that or their children would have to join a gang. The legal issue is one that we, as Americans, look at from a comfortable side, from the other side of the wall. We criticize without empathizing, and that’s where we’re wrong. Thank you to The Killers for highlighting one of the many areas that we can still fix in the Land of the Free.

    Lyrics:
Can't wipe the wind-blown smile from across my face
It's just the old man in me
Washing his truck at the Sinclair station
In the land of the free (Ooh)
His mother, Adeline's family, came on a ship
Cut coal and planted a seed
Down in them drift mines of Pennsylvania
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
    (I'm standing crying)
When I go out in my car, I don't think twice
But if you're the wrong color skin (I'm standing, crying)
You grow up looking over both your shoulders
In the land of the free
And we got more people locked up than the rest of the world
Right here in red, white and blue (I'm standing, crying)
    Incarceration's become big business
It's harvest time out on the avenue
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Move on there's nothing to see
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
    Oh-oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh-oh
    I'm standing crying (Oh-oh-oh-oh)
    I'm standing crying (Oh-oh-oh-oh)
So how many daughters, tell me, how many sons
Do we have to have to put in the ground
Before we just break down and face it:
We got a problem with guns? (Oh-oh-oh-oh)
In the land of the free
Down at the border, they're gonna put up a wall
Concrete and Rebar Steel beams (I'm standing crying)
High enough to keep all those filthy hands off
Of our hopes and our dreams (I'm standing crying)
People who just want the same things we do
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
In the land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free
Land of the free, land of the free

An opportunity to be born in the U.S. and be a legal citizen. A college education. A good future. Thanks mom and dad for everything. I do often think about what they’ve sacrificed for me, but this made me sit here and cry and reflect upon my life for a solid 15 minutes. Do you let strangers into your home when they need shelter? If you don't, then use that logic to understand borders. Rome did, and when they couldn't hold their borders... huh, they collapsed. So strange.

@@GoodGranted I was merely posting the lyrics , I was not commenting on the political stance of the song. I agree with what you're saying, but as with anything it is never just back or white, and there is obviously the human element to be considered. One of the other points of the song was about the irony of the view that anyone can come to the "land of the free" and make a name for themselves, except actually they can't - so how can it be land of the free.

@@GoodGranted Rome didn't collapse because they took in immigrants and refugees. That's what you're implying. There are a number of things that contributed to the fall of Rome. There's a huge difference between an invading force and having people cross the border illegally. The biggest contributing factors to the fall of Rome were an over-reliance on slave labor, invasions by Barbarian armies, unstable economy, over-expansion of the military, overspending within the military and rampant corruption within the government. Which kind of sounds familiar. So your fall of Rome comparison fits here. Just not the way you think it does. Pick up a book sometime.

Well I guess that settles it. It is now more important than ever to funnel these immigrants to a legal port of entry so they at least have a chance in the future of becoming citizens.
To encourage them to cross illegally just puts them immediately on a course where they will never achieve it unless given amnesty... Think it through. We are now in a place politically that the democrats would need to win the house, senate and presidency and push through amnesty and then lose all power in the next election...hoping to grant enough amnesty to increase their own political power. The remainder of America including all immigrants who came here legally will turn away from democrats for decades after that. Only 14% of legal immigrant Hispanics in America are against the border wall. 86% are for it. The wall would be good for the democrats too. If they succeed in blocking it...they are just shooting themselves in the foot. The Republicans will make it clear that every criminal or terrorist act after that by an illegal is because of the Democrats. Coastal liberals are taking polls within their own coastal liberal communities. Take a poll in the "fly over" states where all the "deplorable s" live. See what they think.

On December 12th 2012, I woke up, unlocked my phone, and, like so many others, saw the pleas to “Pray for Sandy Hook.” The news was devastating. Heart wrenching. A gut punch. But, sadly, not as shocking as it should have been. As a father I’ll never fully comprehend what that community and those parents went through. But my church upbringing taught me to mourn with those that mourn and I did it the best way that I knew how. I cried for those kids and teachers. I got on my knees and I prayed for those families.
If there was a single moment that I mentally began to assembly “Land of the Free,” that was it. In the months and years that followed, America would be hit with an onslaught of more mass shootings of innocents and too many examples of racial injustice to ignore. After some self education and soul searching- with the help of great beacons like Ava DuVernay’s “13th,” and my friend Jimmy Kimmel’s powerful opening monologues- I couldn’t help but sit down and commit how I was feeling into a song.
We dishonor our values, our ancestors and our heritage when we tear gas our brothers and sisters seeking asylum. I see my family in the faces of these vulnerable people. After all, it wasn’t that long ago that my grandmother and her family immigrated from Lithuania to escape the U.S.S.R’s oppression. They chose to leave everything they knew behind to come to America, and work grueling jobs in dangerous coal mines, rather than endure tyranny at home.
I love my country. I know that these are complicated issues but whether you stand the left, right, or straddle the line, you’ve gotta believe that we can do better.
    -Brandon Flowers

I did a lyric analysis of this song with my 11th grade English students. It was pretty powerful. The Killers' use of Rhetoric is outstanding in this song, not just in the lyrics, but the tone as well. It's so heartland American, which is who he is making his plea to. It is a call for understanding when people have closed their hearts and will not see people, only difference. We've also cross referenced this song with Bob Dylan's "Shelter From The Storm".

From Mexico here. My parents have 5 children. All born in Mexico. Many years ago, they managed to take us all to the United States for a better life. They left first, leaving all their children behind, promising they'd take us with them eventually. That they'll see us again eventually. Little by little, they found the way to bring us with them. Me and my sister were the last to leave. I was just 4 years old. My sister, 7. It was a 3 to 4 day walk to cross the border, not mentioning the trip from where I'm from(Puebla) to the border. I feel this song so much, because my parents had to cross to give us a better life. It was definitely one of the things that changed my life forever.

How can one be proud to enter the nation illegally? If I went to another country and entered illegally and set out to stay there without following protocol, then when I get caught I deserve to sent away because I am violating their laws. People need to follow the law of the nation they wish to enter. People don't oppose immigration - they oppose illegal immigration - side stepping and dismissing the laws of that nation.

Great to see The Killers put into song an issue that they care about, well done. And a powerful short film to accompany it, symbolising the paradox of the Land of The Free, for some at least, with the Stars and Stripes flown upside down, indicating distress. Apt symbolism that strikes at the core of the issue.

    • @Ricksblitz4

What exactly is this “issue?” So many confuse broken humanity and our broken world and that reality and blame it on a country where you can do any job you want, go anywhere you want, date anyone you want, that has brilliant Constitutional checks and balances that allow “We The People” to challenge the government and make incredible change (Look at Brown vs bd. Of Ed). It isn’t always perfect, but don’t blame the country. All of us are empowered to make individual decisions every day that are protected by the Constitution and this great Republic.

    Hebrews 13:2
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.
    Leviticus 19:33-34
“When a stranger sojourns with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
    Romans 15:7
Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.
    Leviticus 19:34
You shall treat the stranger who sojourns with you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
    Exodus 23:9
“You shall not oppress a sojourner. You know the heart of a sojourner, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.
    Leviticus 24:22
You shall have the same rule for the sojourner and for the native, for I am the Lord your God.”
    Deuteronomy 10:19
Love the sojourner, therefore, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.
    Exodus 22:21
“You shall not wrong a sojourner or oppress him, for you were sojourners in the land of Egypt.
    Malachi 3:5
“Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.
    Leviticus 25:35
“If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you.
    Galatians 5:14
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
    Job 31:32
(the sojourner has not lodged in the street; I have opened my doors to the traveler),
    Isaiah 58:7
Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh?

Welcome immigrants, but following the laws.
      Romans 13:1-14
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the governing authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring God's judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right by the law of the land and you will be right with God. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s appointed, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s appointed, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves fulfills the law.
      Titus 3:1
Remind them to be submissive to rulers and authorities, to be obedient to the laws of the land, to be ready for every good work
      Matthew 22:17-22
Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar's.” Then Jesus said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's"
      1 John 3:4
Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness and lawlessness is sin
      Matthew 17:24-27
When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?” He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?” And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that first and give it to them for me and for yourself.”
      1 Peter 2:13-17
Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors appointed to punish those who sin and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people. Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for sin, but living as servants of God under the law of the land. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor and his laws.
      Luke 2:1-52
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child.

Rosellen Provost I posted a reply to cherry picked scriptures the OP used to defend ILLEGAL immigration. Looks like you want to twist scriptures around too. God gives free will to all people. Many choose to follow God and many choose to follow evil, including leaders. If choose to use scriptures as your defense for a political agenda, you better apply them in their entirety and in the context in which they were written, regardless if you like them or not, or you're applying a blasphemous message yourself. Western civilization have laws based on Judeo-Christian values and laws, regardless if you like them or not too.
I support LEGAL immigration 100%. I absolutely do NOT support people from other countries coming into our country and refusing to pay taxes when the rest of us have to. I also don't support illegal aliens receiving government entitlements or taking advantage of privileges like education, when they do not financially contribute to the salaries or facilities. It's unconstitutional because it's NOT equal. We do not have a surplus of funds to support them. I also do not support illegals request to vote. I cannot vote for foreign politicians while I am abroad, it is not my country. We are not a one-world order.
There are no excuses why people in other countrIes can't come to the U.S. legally. A million people migrate here LEGALLY every year and we welcome them with open arms. Do those numbers reflect a horribly, broken system? If you want to go watch a movie but don't have money for a ticket, or don't want to stand in line, do you sneak in the back door, kick someone out of their seat onto the floor, and demand their popcorn too? A poverty defence doesn't hold ground for jumping ahead of the immigration line for refugee status when many Africans are desperate to eat and face genocides, abuses and desperation far worse than citizens in South America. Their efforts should be focused on overthrowing their corrupt governments and fix their own systems, not run to and take from our people. Illegal immigrants cost us, the taxpayers, 116 billion dollars annually. 1/4 of my paycheck is taken by the U.S. government for illegals who jump the ticket gate, along with handing out money to other countries, and other BS, when millions of our own people are left for dead, struggling, hungry, or homeless. My question to you is: Why do you feel illegals should continue to be tax exempt? At the end of the day that's the debate. When our government runs a deficit, our money tree for locusts to eat is dead.
If they want a freebie from us, then working citizens living in other countries should be forced by their government to pay taxes for their own citizens regardless where they are, or if they choose to break the law. Those taxes should be collected by the U.S. government to cover their costs and ship them back. If they want to come to America, they can do it legally, pay the ticket, wait in line, follow our laws, and pay their own way.

I just heard "Wake up and smell the coffee" moment. Every word, every phrase, broke my heart. This is the most honest representation of the anguish this country has been going through for these longest, most bitter four years. I can't stop listening to it and I cry. It may not be an anthem. It feels like sorrow and fear and regret. Ever word sings America. Every word rings of truth. Truth that makes you want to hang your head in shame. Thank you Killers. You slay me. It hurts to hear but sometime truth and beauty hurt.
