RPM 100% does affect fuel economy. I have found, shockingly, that the cube root of the ratio between rpm is an incredibly good approximation for the difference between fuel consumption, all other things being equal.
For example, if your car cruises at 2200 rpm at 60 mph at gets 40 MPG, if you downshift to a lower gear and instead cruise at 3000 rpm, your mpg will be reduced by a factor of cbrt(3000/2200) which would be 36 MPG.

10th Gen Civic Hatchback owner here - ordered my new 2018 LX (5 years ago) with a 6 speed, 1.5 turbo, love it. Have 87k on it now. The fun having the low rpm torque is a huge plus over the N/A engine. I just didn't want to give that up vs having to rev a N/A engine out a bit. I average 40 to 42 mpg at 70mph on the highway, about 35 in town. Your point about the tach and speedo readouts is right on! 10th gen has big digital mph readout which I love. My 10th gen MSRP was $19,900 and I bought it for $700 below MSRP back then ($19,200). I truly believe that if I don't "tune" the 1.5T engine (which I have no plans to do), it will last at least 250k miles. I think that little 1.5T engine is tough as nails because tuners are getting 250+hp out of them and they run them hard. Just drive it spirited, and the 1.5T will last a long time, just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the POV drive! I commented on your initial video about this car, and I decided to get one as well. Have a silver 2.0 liter with a 6 speed reserved. I got lucky, for me its the exact trim and color i wanted all for MSRP, so im OTD in the $29k range in PA. The car has been built and set to deliver in 1-3 weeks. Happy the car seems quiet on the highway, I was concerned about roadnoise when i drove a cvt sport sedan. I agree about the trip odometer, that's a pain. Although I honestly shift by sound, but this car seems pretty quiet. Really hoping I dont have the leaking hatch issue, but I appreciate you are documenting it and hopefully we have a known solution soon.

There's probably bigger aftermarket sway bars, stiffer struts, and stiffer coil springs, like the Eibach that you get two choices of height lowering. I was not aware of the hatch leak problem. Good to know because I am still considering a Boost Blue Pearl Sport Hatchback if I don't opt for the HR-V Sport. I would rather have this N/A 2.0L over the 1.5L turbo any day. The detuned 2.0L turbo from the previous Accord would be a good thing to have for the Sport Touring or Si... Or maybe the Sport Touring should have the present Si version of the 1.5L turbo and the Si have the detuned 2.0L turbo.
But the Civic Sport Hatchback/Sedan is the best bang for the buck.

I think this car is a flashback to Hondas true origins, and it is for a reason. Only thing missing is analog or semi digital cluster that really would have sent us back to a full nostalgia. So this may be the very end of the line for Honda 6MT with multi-point and this is the last hurrah by be 2-3 years away before total EV w/3 cylinder engines are the only choice going forward.
We had a 1978 MT Civic hatch that I learned to drive, and a 2024 would be a good epilogue for me to finish out my car ownerships. The only thing that killed our 1978 Civic hatch was the Michigan rust, it otherwise ended the cars life way ahead of its intended time.

Congrats on getting the vehicle for msrp. Seems like every year the msrp price goes up. What's the ride height or ground clearance between your 8th gen civic and this new sport manual one? I would have loved if these modern cars still had a physical handbrake and didn't have that auto start stop since this is a manual. I agree with you, I might get one before this year ends because not sure how long Honda will produce the model you have in this video since the hybrid model will be available next year. So in 2022 I bought a Corolla hatchback with a manual transmission because they were cheaper, had more features that I preferred, and was dual injection. Seeing now that the Civic Sport isn't just direct injection makes me regret my decision a bit. The most lacking thing in the Corolla is the cargo space; the Civic is huge in comparison! But one thing I'm really grateful for on the Corolla SE is that I have a fully analog guage cluster. I really didn't like the idea of the XSE having a fully digital one, so I don't think you're being too picky at all. I'm enjoying your Civic content, it's interesting learning now about the Sport 6MT, even if likely will never own one. But who knows, never say never!

      @singular9 Рік тому

As someone who owned Toyotas my whole life, switched to an accord and the tech is absolutely worse than anything I've ever used. Firstly it's horribly unreliable. The safety systems shadow brake repeatedly so I turned off emergency braking entirely (but you have to turn it off every drive, it turns itself back on every time) and the lane assist can sometimes just not work. The infotainment literally deleted devices every few days from memory, so I have to repair my phone except you can only do it when stopped, so if you didn't notice, no pairing all drive yay! Either way, all I learned is Honda electronics are all looks and no reliability compared to Toyota.

It will also let you hit the gas and brake pedal simultaneously to correct for power understeer in the snow. I induced about 15 degrees of oversteer under braking and I felt zero intervention from the stability control. You have some misconceptions about rpm, lugging, and mpg. If you break out a scan tool and monitor what the CVT version of this same car and any modern car with an electronic throttle body and automatic transmission (basically anything made after 2001) is doing, you will quickly find out that the ECU is applying 70-90% load on the engine as low as 1300 rpm in many cases. 80% load at 1500 rpm correlates to a throttle position absolute of about 20%. Just because you push the pedal down 20% of the way doesn't mean the engine is at 20% load, granted you have a car made after 2001 or so. When more power is requested, the ECU just tells the PCM to delay the shifts or initiate a downshift and allow higher rpm with the same torque to achieve higher power. There is a little bit of wiggle room, but it's all in the top 50-90% of the engine load range. The reason they do this is for fuel efficiency. And most of them you literally would not notice them doing this because they're designed for it. Most automatic cars made after 2015 or so very rarely operate under 50% engine load under regular driving conditions, and the only way to cause that to happen is to shift to neutral or to reduce the throttle input position to single digits while driving.
You seem concerned about lugging your engine on the highway, and I'm here to tell you that you shouldn't be. 6th gear in this car at regular highway speeds is just about guaranteed to be over 2000 rpm, and possibly over 3000 rpm if traveling faster than 80mph. While it wouldn't be the most efficient option, you can floor the accelerator in 6th gear with this K20C engine at 2000 rpm and you won't hurt it one bit. Dialing it back to 90% over 100% would be more efficient, but believe it or not, driving at full throttle in 6th gear is actually more efficient than creating the same amount of power with less torque in 5th gear, or 4th, or any of the lower gears. And that's a fact you can convince yourself of quite quickly by monitoring live data on a scan tool. There is absolutely no reason to be afraid of low-mid rpm and mid-high load scenarios on a modern, NA, port injected engine. On a direct injection only engine, you'd be doing the engine an yourself a favor by avoiding driving with the engine rpm in any of the dead zones where intake air and fuel don't mix very well. This is usually between 1500-2000 rpm but it can be a tad lower or higher depending on the design of the engine. On a turbo engine, especially a modern high compression one, you would want to avoid driving in boost at lower rpm, that's also good practice.
But in your case with your car, you would only benefit from making 6th gear your best friend above 35 mph or so for simple cruising. There isn't very much torque available in 6th gear at any given time, so you will need to downshift if you wanted to maintain speed up a steep hill or to accelerate quickly. Other than that, don't be afraid to lug your engine because unless you're near idle speed, you basically can't.

I had a 2015 Impreza, but CVT, because I wanted adaptive cruise. Subaru *FINALLY* added manual transmission support to EyeSight in late 2023 (BRZ only), but now, the only manual cars they offer are BRZ and WRX. If they still had Crosstrek or Impreza with manual (and obviously EyeSight), I'd have bought one by now. Specifically, Impreza 2.5RS with manual + EyeSight would've been mine. Too bad for them, I'm going for a Civic, because of their stupid decisions.

Thank you for posting quality content on the 2.0 Manual 11th gen! This is the closest I'll probably get to a test drive before ordering one, lol. There's so few of these cars out there. Even the sales staff I talked to at Honda dealers have had to look at their computers to confirm a 2.0 manual hatch even existed and could be ordered, haha. I'm also a fan of port injection as reputable direct injection motor walnut blasting costs a fortune and I don't want to risk chunks of carbon or walnut shells making it into my combustion chambers. I've also seen too many turbos blow on friends' cars on 3-5 year intervals, costing $5000-8000 to replace each time to order the turbo civics. Also I like the 158hp in this motor because then I can drive flat out, foot to the floor, in the first 3 gears without risking my license! I was watching the iihs crash tests for this car and there's a huge airbag in the center console to stop the driver and passenger from head butting each other during a T-boning accident! That's genius! My one concern with this car is the rev hang. Can I clutch in, upshift, and not have to count 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi,3 Mississippi before the revs drop enough to let out the clutch?

9:18 Absolutely not. 26.7 MPH / 1000 rpm is very conservative cruising gearing.
For reference, my 1994 Accord is at 25.9 MPH / 1000 rpm, which is effectively the same as this civic, and it simply does not lug at all once I get above 55 mph and it's happy to be floored even a 70 mph at 2700 rpm.
For another reference, the 2006 Honda Civic with the R18 and the 5 speed auto was doing 31.9 MPH / 1000 rpm and it gets into 5th gear even down at 45 MPH (which would be 1400 rpm with the torque converter locked) and it handles it fine. 2200 rpm at 70 mph. Of course that is a rather extreme example and there is no appreciable torque for acceleration in 5th gear on that Civic but it will cruise fine.
Also this same car with the CVT will do 38.5 MPH / 1000 rpm with the CVT which is 1800 rpm at 70 MPH ... and it also handles that fine. If you probe into the inner workings of the transmission logic on the CVT, it will comfortably run the engine at 93% load down as low as 1300 rpm at 50 MPH ... so no, you won't be lugging this car in 6th. You'd have to be pedal to the metal under 45 MPH to truly lug it in 6th.

No such thing as maintenance free, and the L15 has shown to have issues, but there are also a lot od people who have 200k+ miles on their turbos withoit a single issue, and it all comes down to changing oil at every 5k miles and not the BS maintenance minder that tries ro push your oil change past 10k miles every time, and also not using 0w20 unless you are in the winter. The turbo engines will burn and degrade a lot of 0w20 oils so using 0w30 or 5w30 is prefered. Changing any transmission fluid is also important, liftime fluid doesnt exist, and CVTs like Manuals, should be done ebery 30k miles. On GDI turbo enginrs, you can just use CRC valve and turbo cleaner every 10-20k miles, its cheap and works really well. In the end, its about tamikg care of your car. The k20 will last longer, but you can make the L15 last a long time if you just do the maintenance needed.
