      @@ScenicFights Honestly curious, since we know a bit more about how fight scenes are crafted, how would you go about giving the decisions of choreography consistent character, while still selling the fight as "these characters are in danger"? Would you be able to weave more believable mistakes into the fight to make the fight last the length the director needs for run time and rising tension of the fight? How much would you factor the position of the camera and lighting into your choreography recommendations?
      I have no doubt if a choreographer is involved at story boarding and scheduling of script, especially if there is a proper rehearsal budget as opposed to day of shooting choreography, that must make a big difference in the quality of a fight scene.

    • @ScenicFights
      @ScenicFights  3 роки тому +43

      @@CanadianWolverine This is a great question and something we will answer in depth in the future. I will keep it short for now, it really comes down to the director/producer vision and how much focus they want to put into the fight choreography. Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick series, is an experienced stuntman and a huge fan of old school martial art films, that is why the John Wick choreography is often praised in Hollywood because the Director can clearly communicate his vision to the choreographers, and the producers will let him. Chad also understands that a good fight choreography can enhance character development, and be further enhanced by dramatic lighting and camera positioning.
      Having a fight scene being a multiplier of character development and plot development is not unusual in Hong Kong cinema, but it's relatively new in Hollywood.
      The issue with most Hollywood films is they don't put any planning into fight choreography, they usually have stunt actors improv on the spot! Furthermore, the director/producer don't care about it or the cinematographer doesn't know how to properly shoot it or the editor doesn't know how to edit it. Therefore, a good choreography can look bad if it's not shot well and a fight scene that was shot was well can also look bad if the editor doesn't know how to edit it together (like not editing out camera tricks that will look like mistakes...)
      With that being said, the producer really needs to make a team that really cares about fight scenes, which is often the last thing since it can be expensive and time consuming.

    The fight scenes almost made me turn this movie off. I was excited to see you made a video about it. Although while watching I was waiting to see if you would bring up the horrendous choking techniques in this movie, they were absolutely despicable. I totally agree with you and many commenters on here. Especially since movies like John Wick I feel like there is no excuse for action movies now a days to not have excellently choreographed fight scenes with proper weapons work, especially with firearms as there is so much consumable content both online or available at training facilities like Taren Tactical. No excuse for an actor to not know how to properly handle a firearm and make it look like they are properly managing recoil. As far as hand to hand goes, so many looping telegraphed hooks. It was cringy!

      @@logan607 true. The firearm handling wasn't the worst I've seen in movies and tv but still not great. I just feel like the stakes have been raised and now if you don't live up to the bar that has been set it just looks corny. An action movie or show with bad fight scenes and weapons handling is like an MMA fighter in the UFC not knowing any of the ground game. There is just no reason for it.

    For the first scene, if they wanted to keep the "throw him off" for flow reasons, my first thought was to do a hip lift escape. Sure it doesn't work so well against someone experienced without a few extras (like tucking a leg and rolling to the side) but it is at least far more "realistic" than the funky arm push off and keeps the fight flow the way they had it.

    Great tips! Here's some of mine:
    On ground from back can also grab back of elbow with 1 hand;let's say left hand&back of neck with right hand, which then you move right elbow up or down to stop punches. On hand grabbing elbow, they won't be able to punch&it's relatively easy to hold onto someone's elbow. Then trying to flip them in 1 direction hard, then as soon as they push back, I switch directions&they help my flip them.

    Great break down of the Ava fight scene, just from watching the sequences of the movie fight scenes and Chad’s demonstrations 2:29 from the knee into the tailbone region into the arm frame to the ankle control is it possible from that position to literally reverse it to where you’re on top???
    And to Chow sorry for the mispronunciation of your name, the rock vs knife scene I’m in total agreement, from that side step and redirect of the initial low line thrust position alone with rock in left hand hook to body, hook to the head followed by a straight right good night the confrontation is over...
