  • Black Madeira often grows slowly on its own roots, though not always. To ensure good growth, we grafted a Black Madeira onto Brown Turkey rootstock in January 2013 and this tree has grown vigorously. Some of the cuttings taken from this tree and rooted have grown very well on their own roots while others grow slowly. Some people have alleged there are various strains of Black Madeira and I disagree. Also, I believe that Black Madeira, Figo Preto, and Violeta are the same variety with Violeta being the only formal variety name. We continue to use the variety names for our various trees as we received them
Fruits have a very nice berry flavor of moderate intensity, is moderately sweet, are jammy with a bit of seed crunch. The skin can be a little tough, though that's not a problem for most fig enthusiasts. This is a very delicious fig and a top favorite for many, including myself.
