Black Madeira Fig Late October Update

  • Black Madeira continues to form new fruit while still ripening several nice fruits for us late in the year. I believe in a warmer climate, this could produce fruits continuously. Unfortunately, ever winter we have many unripe fruits that eventually fall off in the winter. We have another Black Madeira in our high tunnel (unheated greenhouse) in hopes we can extend our season for this variety.

    Hi there, I live in zone 8b and was wondering if grafting a Black Madeira or say an I258 to a Brown Turkey in the same way you've done would ensure the plant keeps the hardiness of a Brown Turkey and allow the tree to become a perennial in my area. Or is that too simplistic a thought process? Unsure where you're based Just found your videos and enjoy the few I've seen so far!

    Harvey, have you noticed any difference in ripening times between the grafted and non grafted black madeiras. I’m wondering if rootstock can effect ripening times on figs.

      @Figaholics  3 роки тому +1

      I have not. I have them side by side for quite a number of years now and don't really see any difference in the fruiting results except for a larger harvest on the larger grafted tree.

    How about the portuguese fig that in the USA is called "Craven's Craven". Is is also the same as Black Madeira?

    • @Figaholics
      @Figaholics  4 роки тому

      I've thought that is a distinct possibility, but mine has grown slowly and hasn't fruited yet for me to compare. What are your thoughts?

    • @fmdsv
      @fmdsv 4 роки тому +1

      @@Figaholics I don't have the fig tree and I didn't taste the fig. From what I saw on the Internet, it looks the same both outside and inside, and I don't know any other portuguese fig that looks like it, other than Figo Preto. One of the things some say is they say it grows faster than black madeira, but for you it has grown slowly, so I think it is people's imagination or some trees of the same variety grow faster for many reasons and some trees of the same variety can also taste a little diferent for many reasons and even fig from the same tree can be bigger and taste a little different too. It also might be a naturally occorrence mutation from the original black madeira, but most probably is the same as black madeira. That's what I think.

      @@Figaholics Also, I didn't want to say this, but in some cases the new names with the promise of being better than the original, might not be just people's imagination, it might be to be able to sell cuttings at very high insane prices. Sorry to say this but you know how reality can be.

      I suspect this is sometimes the case, but don't really have any opinion on when as I am poor at reading minds. I have only given a name to one unknown fig and have never sold it. It's probably Black Mission and I named it after my uncle's family's former property (largest fig tree around here).

      I don't believe in the use of the names of strains associated with Black Madeira. See my comments on this matter at facebook.com/Figaholics/posts/1506696739390734

      That is a great climate for growing all of the varieties we show. I suggest you try a few different types to see what flavor profiles you prefer.
