- The number of patients being treated for Covid in hospitals across the UK has risen above 30,000.
More than 1,000 deaths were reported in the latest 24-hour period, the highest since the peak of the first wave of the pandemic in April 2020.
The London area is at the centre of the crisis. A BBC team has been allowed to film inside the intensive care unit at the capital’s University College Hospital.
Huw Edwards presents an extended BBC News at Ten special report by medical editor Fergus Walsh, cameraman Adam Walker and producer Noel Titheradge.

Those staff don’t need a clap on Thursday’s. What they need is a solid pay rise and thoroughly deserve it. Claps don’t pay the bills. Physically and more importantly, mentally draining.
I worked years in social care. Yes we aren’t paid loads but if I were to demand higher pay many clients would not be able to afford carers and nurses.
Quit repeating jargon you have heard and just jumping on the bandwagon.
It’s pathetic and weak
The clap is the public thanking us, they can demand pay rises and stuff but at the end of the day, it is how the people want to thank us. I think it is a nice gesture, they cant do anything about our salary

Let’s all just blame everyone else instead of looking at how some of us have behaved even though we have been told time and again. A large majority of the population thought it only affected the old and the vulnerable and the amount of people who wanted their life to carry on, holidays, visiting friends eating and drinking out etc etc. Since last March I haven’t done ANY of this, maybe because my mum died of Covid at the end of April. @@EricBlair-jg2ux Youre missing the point. Low risk for many, but still high risk for a significant amount. That significant amount is getting sick and need care in our hospitals. The more people that get sick with covid means the less hospital space and staff, which means people who suffer with mental health, cancer, heart attacks and then non urgent issues get pushed to the sidelines. Eventually the system is over run and more people die on both spectrums.

It appears to me, though none of you's could ever dare to seriously consider it, that something has taken leave of your usually good senses here.
They worked fine back in Feb/Mar last year...just like me you watched the 1st two cases being given military escourt to a `high security specialized ICU` in London. Watched that 1st broadcast from Boris & his sidekicks..."Sadly, i'ts likely that no family will escape unscathed from this killer virus"
The unbelievable amount of money being allocated to this dire emergency. For sure...you shat yourselves same as me.....we all had the good sense to understand what a killer pandemic meant, we could all picture that horror...& fear it most justifiably.
So....where the hell is it? Putting aside the MSM, the masks, the lockdowns....please, step back & with nothing other than your five good senses, take a good long look around you. Everything is entirely normal according to those senses...bar the abnormal we've been `told` to adopt in fear....si?
If there was a killer virus on the loose then we wouldn't need the MSM to inform us of it would we now? We'd be witnessing it only too horribly well with our own five good senses...the same good senses that would lead us all to immediately stay at home, shut the windows, shop only for essentials, every bugger in the UK only too happy to wear mask, shield & gloves whenever they stepped outside, if they should even dare...only too happy to lock themseves away to protect others.
Why oh why or what oh what has taken leave of your five good senses & caused you to instead, completely ignore them?
I have to assume it's that fear that we all felt back at the start, 'cept I don't have a tv or radio & I've never read a newspaper in my entire life, so unlike you's I'm not willfully exposing myself to the avalanche of fear-mongering from the MSM on a 24/7 basis.
My mother by the way is 88yrs old & not in the best of health sadly....like any year, this time of year is a worry. If she should catch the flu or some other respiratory condition then that could well be her demise. Should the worse happen she'd enjoy the celebrity status of being the only flu or respiratory condition death to be recorded in 2021...'cept it won't be, will it? It'll be just an extra, convenient, didget added to that damn number that your fear has focused your good senses on....the dreaded Covid Daily Death Count!!
I'm a clinical psychologist at a hospital in the North West, covid is real. I've seen it. I speak to nurses, doctors, surgeons, they're my work colleagues. I've worked for the NHS for over a decade. I just want to point out, I'm kind of sick of hearing people in the comments blame the surge in cases on people not wearing masks. Firstly, when I go shopping in sainsburys, literally everyone but a few people wear masks. Mask uptake is extremely high. Secondly, cloth masks and the type of masks everyone wears in public etc, they aren't fitted. In a hospital, masks are fitted and there aren't any gaps on the side etc, and the material is designed to block particles that are extremely small (measured in microns) these work. The cloth masks, not so much. On a cold day you can still see the "fog" as you breath through a cloth mask, same as when you breath out on a cold winters day without a mask. Thirdly, there's been a few peer reviewed research papers based on studies on asymptomatic transmission of SARS CoV2 recently, the latest a huge study based in wuhan, the original epicenter. They concluded asymptomatic spreading isn't statistically significant in regards to spreading (this means that it didn't happen enough times to actual reason it as a vehicle for transmission, P < 0.05)
We've know for years that anything other than a medical grade, correctly fitting mask is next to useless, that's changed and it's honestly due to politics. No doubt I will be attacked for my science and evidence based comment, despite being a frontline NHS worker myself. Covid is a nasty disease, but it's been overpolitized and for whatever reason, asking questions and debating is now, seen as a negative. Asking questions such as why there hasn't been any impact assessment on lockdowns makes you a covid denier. Despite seeing a huge surge in suicides and mental health degradation in my job, I will still be attacked for asking such questions, despite a professor from Bristol University recently predicting 560k people will die due to the austerity, poverty and lack of health treatment caused by repeated lockdowns.
Can we please normalise the fact that asking questions, and wanting to weigh up the pros and cons of lockdown isn't anti covid, or anti anything. We need to consider both sides, we need an impact assessment.
Apologies for any typos, I start work in 30 minutes and I don't care to proof read, cheers!
I wish I could give your comment more likes!

Started work in Nov 2020 as hospital porter, 1 mth in contracted covid. Passed it on to my household and was only paid SSP £94.00 a week. My HR said I couldn't prove I contracted it at work. How very caring....
It's funny how we clapped for the NHS one day, then slagged it off the other. We followed the guidelines when it suited us, but changed them to fit our own needs. We wore masks - but only to cover our mouths. We flocked to populated garden centres, that we would never normally go too- to help our mental health. ( to feel emotions other than happy classes you as mentally ill or depressed?)
We are a blame game nation, never owning responsibility for our actions - always pointing the finger. We always have to find a reason or a theory for why, because deep down we know the real answer is us. We'd sooner talk about what we don't have rather than what we do. A like is more important than happiness, and another's success is far greater than our own. (no matter how big or small).
Correct, we are sheep, and that's why we are in the position that we are today. If we all just knuckled down in the first place - gave a bit of consideration for others, and not just thought about ourselves, maybe our country would be in a better situation today.
*I would like to point out that this is not Pro-Boris speech. I do believe that the government holds accountable to a large extent for the trouble we are now in.*
You’re not wrong
You have rightly pointed this out and it's true
@Andrew Ferns Probably because they are busy dealing with people who abuse the system. You’re never going to please everyone, overall the NHS is a wonderful thing that is taken for granted. Don’t like it, go private. 👍
@Andrew Ferns well being in that 45% tells me that someone like yourself could afford to go private and not need the NHS. (You earn more, you should pay more tax) A lot of the country rely on the NHS and would be lost without it. If you hate paying tax, and you hate the NHS, move to Monaco. Though I don’t think you could party with Lewis Hamilton.
@Andrew Ferns Yes I agree with a lot you are saying here, but still you earn over the average, which is £30,700. Saying to privatise the NHS will not make it a fairer society, as a large percentage of people wouldn’t be able to afford care under private care. I do get what your saying but I still think the NHS is s thing that should be protected, and funded better. The small percentage of high earners should be paying more I agree totally with you.
I’m a private carer. Trying to keep myself safe for my clients so they can still stay at home and not end up in a home. Then possibly end up in hospital. That was selfish of me to quote about myself 1st. But you guys are bloody AMAZING I honestly can’t find the words to say thank you so much for what you are ALL DOING. THANK YOU 😊 XXXXXXXXXXXXX
Nice comment. Keep safe.
thanks for stopping them going into a care home, they are much better being away from these places. My elderly mother isn't in a care home and she is shielding and is ok. She would be gone if she went into a care home.

I burned out late 2019 early 2020 from stress. I've still not recovered. I've developed a bit of IBS and my gut tenses up at the slightest thought of stress even now. I've not worked in months (and now my knee has gone so I can't physically do my job, and I can't do much about it during the pandemic)
I'm not even a nurse. Those nurses put up with superhuman amounts of stress. I simply don't know how they do it!
I wouldn't take on such a stressful job for less than a £40k salary, yet they're on far less. Bless those hard working nutters!
Hats off to the camera team for agreeing to enter this area.
My dad had a heart attack in November 2019 so close to covid outbreak. My mother caught covid but luckily is fine now
Hearing that one guy speak about his symptoms, it reminds me of last january here in canada and my country was denying we were apart of the world wide pandemic that early but i know many people who knew they had it too. It went through my local city, and it pissed off many many people from the way the government denied we even had a single case last year this month.
Bet your flu numbers have vanished though... covid cures flu apparently.
They all had the flu cough cough
Hey London, stay strong. So sad to see whats happening. Greetings from Germany
I cant even imagine what it must be doing to them psychologically watching so many people dying every day.if it was me i will sit in a corner crying endlessly rocking back and forth.i salute all medical personel and i sincely wish you somehow make it out of this dark times mentally unscathed when things finally settles down one day.my thoughts and prayers are with you❤
Dont worry it is their job. Theyvare used to seeing people die. 64000 died in the recent flu pandemic. Also flu has dissapeared and been replace by Covid according to ONS so no real difference for the staff on a patient care level. They are overstretched every year because the government underfund the NHS. Overall mortality is normal for 2020 based on a five year average. Also up until November ICU and hospital occupancy in England and Wales were operating at lower capacity than usual, according to NHS leaked document.
Yet, people still stand there and claim covid is fake
Wow I feel so bad for them we don't know which one is worse UK or USA.
media are the same. propagandists at best.
Uk 100%
Why is there not homeless addicts dead on the street? I know not all of them have been housed
The USA don’t see this is a priority so it is not possible to obtain true figures; however, 300,000 are dead in the USA.
UK has been ' vaccinated more, so they are worser.
Rings a bell?
Find this hard to watch considering I still haven't been put to use after enrolling back into nursing with 10 years experience under my belt back in March when they asked. I wonder how many others haven't been reached out to either.
That's concerning...
Hello, my mother is a nurse of over 35 years and was sent home when this first started, she is still at home now and being told not to go in for any reason... i also learned today that the NHS spent 2 Million pounds on gagging orders to keep medical staff from talking about things, food for thought... :)

The anchor and the reporter are facing each other and talking without masks. They are barely 2 mt apart. And with the new strain? They need to interview further apart.
Rather poor journalism from Fergus Walsh to fit in, of course, with the biased BBC's agenda. There's no need for the journalist to prompt the interviewees. Let them say what they want to say, don't prompt them. He went in with a brief to be negative and tailored the report to fit his predetermined line. What happened to the nightingale hospital, why don’t they use it.
They are starting to open them up again now. NHS leave has been cancelled and retired nurses & doctors plus volunteers are being asked to support the overwhelmed workforce. Still some people seem to think it's all lies. Perhaps they should be made to volunteer so they can see the pressure these poor people are under? Looks like they need 8 or 9 for every one going by this video....
It is not nurses and doctors for each patient. Because there are so many patients it has become patients for each doctor and nurse. Each nurse and doctor has to treat several patients each because they are so overwhelmed. Often they go a whole shift without a restroom break.
Why are all covid patients not isolated in the makeshift hospitals thus freeing up ICU?
