My Opa left for 14 years, leaving my Oma alone, in a strange country, raising 4 children. But as I listened to the song and read your English translation, I realised how deep and romantic this song is. The sensitive and tender farewell of an officer to his beloved girl, his lady of the heart, going on a campaign, and the hope of meeting her in the future, the anticipation of it. This is fascinating! In Russia, before the revolution, hussar songs were famed for their similar meaning and subject matter, and adored by girls and ladies all over the country. And now that memory is still there. That is why these songs are so close, familiar and dear to us, Russians. Only the heart of a true noble man or gentleman can understand it.
