Pearl Mimic Pro - A Few Default Kits
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 жов 2024
- I got my Mimic Pro a few days ago (one of first in UK I believe). It is incredible. Frankly, this recording does not do it justice. It sounds much better than this. The Pearl team should win every award going for this.
I suggest you listen through (good) headphones, rather than loudspeakers, unless you have a great system and can play it loud.
This is a simple recording taken only from the master line outs 1 and 2. These are the 'raw' drum sounds, with only a little compression added after recording. There has been NO mixing so in in some cases eg the cymbals are way too hot.......
Kits played:
First kit - Warmtape
Second Kit - Beauty
Third kit - Whispers
Fourth kit - Masters (with new REF toms added by Pearl to the Mimic website (for owners to upload) two days ago).
The touchscreen is fantastic. It takes a while to get the hang of the menus etc if like me you have been on Roland modules for years. But it is intuitive and brilliant. The sounds are from Steven Slate. They rock. The control over the sounds in the Mimic is incredible. It really is mind-blowing.
It's been a few years since I uploaded any videos on here. iGenesis seems to have gone very quiet. I have been happy as a gigging drummer, playing in UK and Germany in various bands and genres. As you can see, I now have a rather lovely drum-tec kit - a Pro-Series in a gorgeous shade of creamy white. I visited one of their stores in Germany, and fell in love with their kits. Ordered one on the spot. In my view, I have one of the best looking kits on the planet :) It is a joy to play.
Forgive the playing on this video - I was improvising and trying to showcase the sounds. There are plenty of mistakes by the drummer :-)
I'm going to record out to separate tracks and improve this for future recordings - I feel like I am in danger of doing Pearl and the Mimic an injustce with the relatively poor quaity of this recording. Apologies to all.
That first kit easily the best sounding electronic kit I've heard. Amazing!
I agree - it is rather gorgeous!
my very first thought as well! esp coming from a Strike Pro video :P
The Only thing that i could possibly dislike in this video is the carpet. And i like it too. Nice kit, nice module, Nice drumming, Nice house. Congratulations!!!
Ha! Ha! Ha! My drum carpet is my favourite bit :) Thank you for a very entertaining and kind comment!
Dang! Great video man :) That sound amazing, sweet kit too
Thank you so much! Yes, the Mimic is incredible. And yes, I am in love with my kit, I promise you :)
65 Drums if you sell all your td30 pads separately you could get the mimic probably with no extra cost. Obviously module bring the last piece to go. Just saying though. That's what I would do anyway lol I'm already trying to find ways to afford it. A part of me thinks waiting to see if they come out with a stripped down version (td25 Vs td30) that would be cheaper but that's just an if and could be another year or two before that theoretically happens :(.
I could see me using all these kits... but especially the first one.. So realistic that I can close my eyes and imagine acoustic drums.
Very very nice demo! And first one where drummer use a LOT of room. Kinda surprising to hear that! Thanks!
That's very kind of you, thank you!
Finally real drum sounds on an e-kit
WICKED! thanks for this Alex. Very nice to hear you improvising. SWEET.
Weldone man. I just bought one 2 days ago. The best buy I ever made!!
Very, very nice to have you back. What a great surprise! Fantastic lookng kit
I'm blown away that people keep saying that. After three years I thought I would be long forgotten! Thank you so much. Yes, the kit makes me smile every time I walk into my drum room......
My dream kit.
Nice playing! This module sounds amazing.
Thank you 😊 This video is a few years old now - the Mimic has been updated very recently, and the default kits sound even better. You might want to watch my video on this, which I did a week ago.
Cool drumming and amazing drumset. Thx for the vid!
Thank you so much!
What a great new drum kit you have. I didn't see your latest videos because the bell was turned of. I hope I will see them again, I do like your videos very much. Congrats with your awesome kit!🍺🍺🍺
Thank you so much!
Wow that really sounds amazing!!!!
You should have done your version of the one handed drum solo, lol. This sounds AWESOME! brilliant piece of kit.
Welcome back! Missed your videos.
Thank you so much!
awesome playing and it sounds great
Well Done! Love your e kit!
Sounds amazing! Awesome kit! Some awesome beats too man! If it sounds that good with minimal setup, imagine how good it will sound after some tweaking! Can’t wait to hear it once you’ve had some time with setup, looks awesome too
It gets better all the time. I used it live last week on tour in Germany, and the audience refused to believe it was electronic. And it looks sexy as hell on stage under lights. Improvements are being made all the time to the kit, and I am fortunate enough to be involved in helping the developer with beta testing and things. The attitude of Pearl to this module, particularly the software team, is just incredible. More videos coming shortly, including footage from my live tour last week.
Must be one of the best sets. You selected great components.
Thank you very much. For sure, a Drum Tec Pro series kit together with the Mimic makes for an amazing edrum kit. The drum carpet helps too :)
Welcome back on YT ! Great sounding kit definitely!
You are very kind, thank you! I'm truly humbled that people keep saying 'welcome back'. Amazing :)
I like your different approaches to the different kits and your playing style. Recording is not as bad as you think bro.. Great for just out of the box! I am wanting get the same Drum-Tec kit. I imagine it "feels" wonderful! Cheers!
Drew
You are very kind, thank you. Yes, I thought it would be useful to use different grooves with each kit, to try and help show how the kits really can produce entirely different atmospheres and soundscapes. Really glad you appreciated that. Yes, amazing for out the box - I hardly changed a thing. The drum-tec kit blew me away when I tried it in their store in Germany. I damn near wet my pants, and placed an order on the spot. I have not looked back since :)
That rim shot sounds do good!
Great to have you back. We've missed you! Would love to hear you playing Fading Lights!
Ha! Ha! Thank you! That's very kind of you. Yes, it has been so long (3 years?) since I signed in to youtube that I struggled to actually get back in and post this last night. Forgot my password and everything! It took 2 hours to recover my jouxplan channel. Fading Lights.......... maybe!
Fading Lights- You can do it!!! PS, your passion playing the drums is fantastic.
Fading Lights... now that I'd like to see... I did a solo keyboard pub gig last year and my official finale was Fading Lights... Wish I'd recorded it, but then I certainly didn't do justice to the vocals... Programmed drum machine by ear beforehand (a second version with more snare and cymbals for the instrumental section), but mainly playing one part with each hand and bass pedals with my feet. Fun but mentally exhausting.
Great to have you back! Miss those police sessions!
Ha! Ha! I think I will be re-recording a few of the classic jouxplan videos, using my new kit and the Mimic. So perhaps some Police will come your way in the next few months ;) Thank you!
jouxplan love that Purdie shuffle you threw in there by the way. Don’t be a stranger!
I am green with envy!
Amazing
Hardy gets better than that. E-Drum technology has gone a long way.
Mike Luke I was having second thoughts on whether this was an edrum kit
Bom dia Jouxplan; Fiquei absolutamente em catado pelo seu set...
Essa bateria hein...
Im sold...im going to buy a pearl mimic pro when it becomes available in Australia.....just have to decide whether spending the time converting my pearl export series to electronic is worth it in comparison to buying a drum-tec set. Im already looking at around $7,000 to convert my 6 piece pearl export with quality components and a drum module....so im guessing a drum-tec kit would be around that price too.... or maybe more depending on the series and shipping fees to Australia.
Is it in Australia yet
Amazing groove you got!!. You'll sound fantastic no matter what you play on. You can be on Cheapest Roland HD1 kit and you'll still sound amazing.
What an incredible thing to say! You are very kind, thank you so much :)
Hey man, I'm amazed with your kit and those Mimic sounds! Gorgeous look along with top-quality sounds. This is much better (in my opinion) and less expensive than TD-50kv. Drum-tech set + Mimic Pro is my dream kit definitely! Btw, very nice drumming, there is no reason for apologies :)
Best wishes from Belgrade!
Hey, thank you so much!
Nice bit of Rosanna groove sneaking in, and some Ballroom Blitz too? In the first few seconds I thought "he's gone back to real drums?" then realised it was new digital kit with the look of real drums. They sound and look fantastic! Nice to see a new video!
Certainly a half time shuffle, (Rosanna) but not with all ghost notes and a less busy bass drum pattern :) I actually had Radar Love in mind, but Ballroom Blitz would work too! Love that you thought it was an acoustic kit at first. It does look kinda good, eh?! Thank you so much!!!
Reminds me that sometimes on keyboards during breaks in band rehearsals I set out to improvise something in the style of one song and suddenly someone will say it sounds almost exactly like some other song. Sometimes I've used those observations as ideas as songs for my "solo" performances. Hopefully will see a bit more of this kit in future videos?? All the best with your musical endeavours.
real sound omg nice
Ha! Ha! This quite old now. The sounds are even better these days. Have a listen to some of my more recent videos 😊
I was actually wondering if you weren't playing an acoustic for the first few seconds! This has to be the best drum module on the market right now, also counting the facts that it has those sounds and cost 2500 euros makes it practically dirt cheap in comparison to the Roland, Yamaha, etc. modules out there.
Ha! Ha! Well that is very high praise both for Pearl's Mimic Pro, and of course Drum-Tec's Pro Series kit - they almost fooled you :) Glad you liked them so much!
First let me say hello and thanks for sharing this awesome technology and your skills! I have to say I am jealous. Perfect choice for a kit plus the sounds from SSD5 built into a module without the need for a computer?? Pure E-Drum HEAVEN! I'm sold
Ha! Ha! Thank you so much, you are bery kind :) Yes, I think this is edrum heaven. It is a joy to play and I think it sounds incredible. It looks sexy as hell on stage too :)
those sound great
Thank you! Yes, I think it sounds pretty amazing :)
drum tec. Always a good choice
SUPER SOUND ♫♫
sick sound, pro skills
as I understand you are a pro player? otherwise why such a waste of talent?
You are very kind! I am not a pro player. Its a long story. Short version is I had a day job and drums was a hobby. I joined UA-cam 2006 (I was 42), started posting drum videos and suddenly realised that you all thought I was good. iGenesis came along. I had lots of hits on my videos. I started playing in bands more seriously. Four years ago I was 'found' by a pro musician local to me. He introduced me to all sorts of genres and challenges and I started playing gigs in UK and Germany with various bands. Everyone I worked with loved my playing and passion. I got better and better. I am still improving every day. Two years ago I went part time at work (3 days) so I could devote more time to drumming. I'm like a little kid, playing with incredible pro musicians from UK, France and Germany, and I can't believe how lucky I am. It is all very humbling and I am so happy. And then to have people on here saying 'welcome back' and they've missed me after my 3 year absence from YT - I'm stunned :)
Yes, I am no one to judge, but for me playing drums starts when you listen to jam like this one and you do not miss other instruments, drumming so good it makes story on its own. Very rare indeed. Pure art. Beautiful.
Wow! What a beautiful comment. I am humbled. Thank you so much :)
Nice! Welcome back!!!!
That's very kind of you, I am humbled :)
These are only ones I use. I prefer acoustic. But damn. This sounds great.
YOUR BACK
YES
Thank you so much!
You're alright. Nice.
I thank you!
Great video and nice drums! I'm still old school playing the td20 kit since it was introduced but I will be purchasing the mimic pro. Off topic how do go about getting your drum less tracks on your other videos if you don't mind me asking.
Many thanks! My other videos don't have drumless tracks - except for the iGenesis ones where we have all recorded our parts from scratch :) With the other videos what you here is my drumming on top of the original drumming.
Best Edrum and best price too ..
Too expensive 🙃
Hello. I'm not sure what you are saying, so don't know how to respond :) The second sentence seems to be the opposite of the first. I think the Dum-Tec kit is an exceptionally good kit, that is for sure. And yes, it is expensive - but so are high end acoustic kits. I'm playing a Pro-Series kit, which is the 3rd 'best' in the Drum-Tec Range. They have 4 ranges / models, starting at the 'Jam', then the 'Diabolo' , then the 'Pro-Series' and finally the 'Pro-Custom'. The Jam and Diabolo are affordable and comparable in price to mid-range Roland hardware :)
Hey! You're back. Nice :)
Ha! Ha! Thank you! I'm amazed any of you still remember me after all this time (3 years since I logged onto UA-cam and uploaded anything I think?)
I've been checking your Genesis "covers" from time to time. Iv'e been doing my own seventies Genesis covers using midi drums and sometimes I got stuck on whats really going on with the drums. Checking your vids helped me get the idea. Like this one, still got it's midi drums soundcloud.com/bribedant/firth-of-fifth-cover-fina130312l
Lately I've got a real drummer to do the playing tho. Men are better than machines :)
Super nice Drum-Tec kit with the cool Pearl Mimic Pro module .
BTW : Is this room only intended for you end the awesome drum kit ?
Ha! Ha! There is no doubt this kit deserves such a room! Alas, no, I am not supposed to have the drums in this garden room. But I figure that for UA-cam videos, it is just the perfect place. My wife has noted it has been in the room for two weeks now, however..........I will soon be in trouble :)
Fantastic. Your humility is refreshing! Great video, freestyling with some minor mistakes is human! Still a great display of skill and really helpful insight into the mimic pro. Nice one mate :)
That is very kind of you, thank you :)
this module has got the Steven Slate drum sounds pre loaded on it
I just got pearl mimic pro along with almost the exact same set up you have. Could you share with me your cymbal settings? I’m not quite happy with the settings yet! Thanks
Hello, apologies for the delay in replying. I'm using the default cymbal settings I think, for the Roland CY14 and CY15. Or are you referring to the hi hat - which is more tricky to set up, and is different for each of us not only because of diferent brands of cymbal, but also becuase of different brands of hi hat stand and hi hat spring tension and gap between top and bottom cymbals and then our foot technique. Let me kow which cymbals and settings you are after/ having problems with :)
Great video! Which audio interface did you use? Thanks.
That's very kind of you :) I used a cheap audio interface - and that is why I lost some audio quality between the Mimic and what I recorded into my Logic software. It was an M-Audio Fastrack Ultra 8R. Of course, the audio on this video is (in my view) really good, but the point I am making is that actually, the Mimic is even better sounding than this in reality. I shall be up-grading my interface to try and match the quality of the Mimic.......!
jouxplan thank you jouxplan. Yes, audio quality is good, but we have always to improve, right? You know well your mimic, so only you can say that the mimic sound is better. I will purchase a mimic module in a couple of months, so I am preparing the ground to receive it! I have a mid audio interface, I will make some tests first and if needed I will upgrade it as well. Thank you for the response and for this great video. Regards,
WICKED
Hi, what kind of Hi-hat pedal are you using?thanks!
Hello and huge apologies for the delay in replying. I've been off UA-cam for a few months. It is a Tama Iron Cobra :)
Is the mimic easy to use or is there a large learning curve?
Hello :) If you come from a Roland (or any other module) background, then it certainly takes a bit of getting used to, as it is fundementally different to all the other modules. If you have never used an edrum module, then it also will be a little overwhelming to start with, especially if, like me, technology scares the crap out you. I came from 8 years of TD20K and TD30 experience. I think the interface and touch screen is fantastic. You have to think differently from Roland - meaning you have to think like a sound engineer. Example - Roland toms have their own fader, and you turn it up or down. Mimic toms also have their own fader, but in addition, the toms are part of the 'overhead' fader and the 'room' fader. This is a replication of the direct mic and overhead mic scenario in any studio, and its great, but it confuses a lot of people who are used to the simplified Roland approach. The Mimic has huge flexibility and ability to calibrate for your own style - the hi hat is especially good. Yes, there is a steep learning curve, if you want to get deep into it. But you can play pretty quickly without having to worry over-much about the intracacies. I managed it, and I'm stupid! And yet now I am one of the beta testers for the software and I talk a lot to the Mimic developer, assisting in the whole project. It's a great module - don't be put off by its seeming complexity :)
TY good to know
I’m thinking maybe it’s time to upgrade from my td9😂😂😂
Ha! Ha! :)
Are you running any splitters are can the module take that many actual inputs?
Hello. No, not using any splitters. As Mark says, this thing has plenty of capacity for kits larger than the standard Roland configuration - for example, there are 5 Aux Trigger inputs. I'm using only 3 Aux for my kit 7 pc kit here.
Can you tell us a llitle more about your kit? sizes Brand, sensors?
Hello :) This is a 7pc drum-tec Pro Series kit in white. It has mesh heads. 20" kick, 14" snare, 8, 10 and 12" mounted toms, and two 14" floor toms. It usually comes as a 4 or 5 piece kit, but I like lots of toms :) Cymbals are stock Roland CY14R and CY15R from my TD20KX which I got in 2010. They are at the end of their life - pretty beat up now (hence a mis-trigger on the china in this video). Hats are VH13. I don't like the Roland rack, its not good for gigging, so I use my (very) old Pearl acoustic rack. Much more robust, plus I think it makes my kit look far better. I use a Sonor Perfect balance single pedal. The Meinl drum carpet is perhaps the best bit!
Do you mind uploading your trigger settings somewhere? I have the same kit pretty much and it doesn’t sound that good with my mimic!
That's odd. The thing is, I have not made any adjustments to the default kits! All I did was to increase quite a lot the overhead volume and the room volume on the Main Mixer. I increased the reverb a bit, again on the Main mixer. I made absolutely no changes to the individual kit settings (ie mic position, compression, eq, etc). I recorded directly the Master Out 1, 2. After recording, I added a litle compression to the whole kit. In terms of trigger settings themselves, I obviously set all that up as required for my drum tec pads and Roland cymbals. There are no suggested drum-tec settings, so I used the ones drum tec recommend for connecting to Roland TD30 (ie mostly PD128 and 125 settings). I did have issues with the kick (very sensitive), and had to make it much less sensitive (increased threshold). But trigger settings should not really be the cause of poor sound, unless you are doing something very weird?
What cymbals are you using?
They are Roland - they came with my TD20KX kit, which I got in 2010. They are the silver ones. CY14s and a CY15 ride. Hats are the VH13.
What is the price of this kit you are playing with mimic pro brain?
If I remember correctly, the white drum-tec shells retail at about 3700 Euro - this is for the 7pc kit I have, kick, snare, 3 mounted toms and two floor. A standard 5 pc is about 2700 Euro. The cymbals are all Roland, a mix of TD20kx CY14 (4 No.) and CY15 (1 No.), and also a VH-13 hi hat. So it's more difficult to value this bit, as, apart from the hats, they are 10 years old. I've just started replacing the cymbals (they are worn out) with the ATV stuff, and it's costing me a fortune.......although it would cost much the same if I just got new Roland cymbals. Probably retail new for all my cymbals would be £2400 ish. Then there is the Mimic itself, and the hardware. The most important and best bit is the rug - £60 from Meinl :)
thank you :)
What model ride cymbal are you using?
Hello. It's a Roland CY15 from my original TD20KX, which I got in 2010. Funnily enough I replaced the ride yesterday (and also the hats and one crash) with ATV cymbals. They are freaking amazing :) The Roland cymbals you see in this video are starting to mis-trigger, after 8 years of being beaten to death.......
What kit are you playing?
This is a Drum-Tec Pro Series Electronic drum kit, together with Roland cymbals. The sounds are generated by the Pearl Mimic module.
can i buy the mimic module and just any old kit ?
Yes, the Mimic is compatible with any standard electronic kit out there, as far as I know - including DIY kits. It is just a matter of getting all the trigger settings tweaked for your partuclar set up.
how quiet is the kit. can you play it in a Condo or apartment.?
It is no louder than any other mesh head kit ie the same as a Roland - which is probably just a bit too loud for a condo or an apartment. The bass drum is always the big problem. Don't under-estimate the hi hat noise too. This is possibly worse than the bass drum, assuming you have a hat that comprises top and botom hats. These 'clack' together at incredible volume, whatever the brand. Stick noise on hats is also loud. I suggest trying various edrum kits out in a shop and seeing for yourself what I mean. I suspect that they are generally a little too loud for condo's and apartments.
Where have you been for 4 years ?
Ha! Ha! I have been busy playing live and had not even logged on to UA-cam for 4 years. I actually forgot my password and had a hell of a time recovering my account! :)
One recommendation, use more Toms. In a demonstration of a kit, you want to play all over the instrument, but you only played the Toms in fills
I thought the same.
I don't know why the shots on your snare sounds like a flam
Juan Castaño he just needs to adjust the settings so it doesn't retrigger.
mmmm, I understand. I hope that can be easily configured from the module, cause the flams are annoying hehehe. Thank you
Juan Castaño yes it's as easy as going into the settings and turning a 1 into a 4
Sorry for the delay in replying. I have not actually noticed the flams you speak of, when I'm playing. But anyway, I recorded this with a fairly old version of the software, and I have been in discussions with the developer who told me that there were some minor issues with the larger snares eg 14" drum-tec snares - and he created a new algorithm which solved this, and gave me a new update (not yet publicly available). I've been using my Mimic for live shows over the past month or so, and had absolutely no issues of flams. Hope this helps :)
Fairly compressed sound. Awesome though.
Symbols sounds it's too digitally
?? ALMOST EVERY KIT SOUNDED ALMOST THE SAME!!!!????? WTH??? MEMIC pro module costs over $2,000. But what?? Every kit just a slight difference between each one?? There should be a HUGE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN KITS - Not just a slightly almost undetectable difference!!!
Don’t get me wrong- It sounds Very Real just like acoustic!! Actually thee realest I’ve ever heard!
BUT COME ON - No one buys Electric ⚡️ drums only to sound like their playing acoustic!!!??
Hope it has Monster Kits like Big ambient sounds arena sounding and Actually Electric sounds if it doesn’t- Man what a waist of spending over 2-Thousand on a Module...
Also heard that actually this module only has -3 diff Cymbals to choose from and only like 3-diff Toms and bass to choose??
Hopefully that’s NOT true either because Damn?
Where did you get that toms?
Do you mean the REF toms? If you go to the official Pearl Mimic website, you will find a page for Mimic owners. The manual is there, the default library of samples is there, and the REF toms are there. This all for download, and you can easily update your Mimic library by importing the REF toms.
Wow men thanks, but i have seen its very expensive!!!! Like 10.000$ or something... lol!! I only have 3000$...
i mean buying that electronic drum set, i dont have
Oh, ok, sorry, I understand now! Yes, the drum-tec kit here is not cheap :( This is a Pro-Series kit, and I have a 7 piece version (I added the 8" tom and a second 14" floor tom), so yes, it is valued at around £3500 just for the shells. The 5 piece I think is around £2600. Drum-tec also have the 'Diabolo' range and the 'Jam' range, which are less expensive :)
