No one can convince me that the team behind Velma didn't steal the idea of a dog killing off the MC from that parody video with over 12M views on UA-cam
Okay, in their defense, animation takes time, so it's not too likely they stole the idea, since they were probably underway making it when the Avacado video dropped. But the similarities are still weird. EDIT: Accidentally replied to one of the bots rather than the original comment, fixed that now.
The fact that them trying to redo the "scrappy is evil" bit by having him kill velma managed to actually sort of break the curse and redeem him in the eyes of many scooby doo fans is honestly very impressive, I hope we get more heroic scrappy in the future just to further spite the velma show
The problem with scrappy was just that he was annoying and poorly written. I really could have liked him if he wasn't so insufferable but he was just SO irritating as a kid. I think if they'd just played him a litttttle bit differently, not done the "PUPPY POWER" thing, he could have been a good enough character.

Now I'm picturing Scooby as Iroh speaking before singing "Leaves From the Vine" 😂 "I'm rawry I riddent rotect roo my run...." Reeves rum the rhine...💔🎶😢
But he's not a villain. He's a hero this time. If the writers say he's a villain, just remember that their main character is a misandrist racist heterophobic asshole.
Masterful twist? More like mean-spirited point-missing. They took an attempt to appeal to kids and turned him into a grating monstrosity whose early "death" was meant to be cheered by the audience.
I have not seen any Scooby Doo show or movie (that I can remember) and have only watched 2 reviews of Scooby Doo media. This show and the movie that came out in 2002. In both of those Scrappy Doo was the surprise villain. Is that just his thing, that he is always the surprise villain? It seems like it would get much less surprising pretty fast because now that he is 2 for 2 I am going to suspect him every time he shows up If I ever see him in anything.
My one question about these dislike farms is why ask “who asked” to comments that aren’t a question? It just looks sad that they try to plug an irrelevant channel using what looks like SPAM not realising half of the people wouldn’t even be able to even follow the link even if they wanted to, most people would just not do it out of spite
What I don't understand is that she didn't want to put Scooby-Doo into the show but yet it's okay for them to put Scrappy in the show. And what they did to him was absolutely ridiculous
I think it's because Scrappy was already a hated character so they thought whatever they do with him doesn't matter. Ironically though, they made Scrappy a well loved character now because of what they made him do.
Warner Bros didn't want to risk them ruining their Mascot (smart decision) so they gave HBO the rights to Velma on the condition Scooby would not be included, Scrappy was never a very popular character and widely regarded as annoying so they probably didn't care if his character was ruined.
Oops, all bots! Technically, WB didn't want Scooby in the show because they didn't want to ruin the character for the kids. I guess they didn't care too much about Scrappy because of his bad reputation with the franchise.
The fact they got Frank Welker, the original voice of Fred, to participate in a show where (for much of it) they drag his character through the mud is such a slap in the face.
I agree It's like having Frank be Megatron or Soundwave and treating both of them like shit It's worse then what happened to Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime in the live action films
@@BenTheBakedBean I never hated him personally when I was younger, but now that I’m older I find him annoying. A lot of fans of Scooby do hate him for it

I am actually friends with someone who works behind the scenes of the show. They are part of the story developing department and they told me that the relationship between the head writers and producers...aren't good to say the least. It's been chaos. And Mindy Kaling is the main culprit.
Well… I‘m not surprised that Mindy was the problem. She has as much acting talent as James Corden. Aka it isn’t really acting if she plays herself Update: Typo corrected
Damn, to think the savior of this bastardization of a beloved classic would be scrappy mfing doo himself. Dude clawed his way up from the underbelly of the franchise after years of obscurity just to smite the false velma. A beautiful tale of tragedy and redemption.
The fact they had scrappy doo kill Velma feels like someone knew this was going to be awful. Because it says something to have the most disliked meme character kill off your main character. You cant tell me that was not done at least in part as catharsis
@UTTPWorldPolice you guys and you’re dumb thing you’re doing made fun of a guy dying from cancer and made fun of Technoblade dying. Y’all are just a bunch of attention seeking morons You don’t have any Dads Because they went to get milk.
'Thos show doesn't feel like a love letter...' Yea it feels like those whiplash texts you get from creeps on dating apps who swing wildly between off color comments, 'quicky' humor, and threatening, unhinged rants about how people don't 'get' them
Mindy Kaling was born a rich nepo-baby. Yet in the show, her self-insert is "poor", and it feels like she's larping as disadvantaged when she wasn't. She pretends she's this underdog fighting the rich but she is rich and always has been. She also postures as progressive, but has a VERY problematic past.
Feels like Mindy likes to pretend to have "marketable" traits. Underdog & progressive... She's basically the concept of "shallow platitudes" in human form.
who would have thought that after so many years of being despised, scrappy was finally able to become the main protagonist by killing off 1 of the most hated characters on 1 of the most hated shows of all time. congrats on your redemption arc scrappy
The thing about making Thorn old is that the Hex Girls should be around the same age as the mystery gang. Making them old IS just spiteful to fans like the rest of the show.
Yeah. This is really oversimplifying the issue. Like yes call them out for being angry at the wrong people.... But like try to understand why people are angry in the first place? Like it's basically his job to do just that. Thorn encapsulates some of the issues this show has and he just ignores it.
I think it comes down to WHY did they age up Thorn? Because for one thing, she's not old, she's in her like what, late thirties, early forties? Like... ya know... a lot of Scooby Doo fans? I feel super gross defending this show for literally anything but I do want to at least say there IS the possibility out there they could have done this to be like "Hey here's a hot version of a Hex Girl for the people who are now in their late thirties and forties who can be like 'Wow this is someone who's hot, a Hex Girl, and in my age range, NICE!" But, I haven't (and will not) see the episode, I've only seen these clips of her in this review and from what I SEE it doesn't look like they made her gross and unattractive or anything, still hot just older. I'm just very much on the side of de-stigmatizing women aging and my kneejerk suspicion is that a lot of the backlash is due to "ew they made look not 18" rather than anything else. Edit: After talking with MewGirlZ I believe my comment would be better served in saying "I think it comes down to WHY are people reacting to the aging up of Thorn as angrily as they are?" rather than attempting to analyze the creators' intent, since without knowing that it's really not something that's worth attempting to explain or attempt to justify. I do think it is important to acknowledge and analyze the factoring of stigmatization of aging, especially women aging, in the fan reactions regardless of the creators and their intentions.
@@HiddenDarkHM Nah. She is just old. This is not what anyone would describe as "hot" by any conventional standards. And how obsessed people are with milfs nowadays there were way to make her hot and still look way over 30 or 40. lol
@@HiddenDarkHM I understand where you're coming from, but given how mean-spirited and offensive the show tries to be in every other regard, I don't think there's a modicum of good intent behind it. I appreciate the perspective and 100% agree that destigmatizing the concept of aging needs to happen. I just have a hard time imagining that that's what they were going for here. They could have done a lot worse to Thorn than making her older, yes, but when has this show included anything else even remotely serviceable to the established Scooby Doo fanbase? I wouldn't trust Mindy Kaling to be in charge of trying to be respectful and nuanced with a classic character if she was the last person in the professional entertainment industry.

Velma's version of Thorn makes me uncomfortable to be honest. Part of it just feels, like, it's not just that they aged her up, it's that she feels like a stereotype of a 30-40 year old "hippie". They give her very little character and what character I have gleaned feels... Ehh immature? Ditzy maybe? And it doesn't feel coincidental that they chose to make her like that, the wiccan character, one of the only wiccan characters I have ever seen in children's media. I'm not wiccan so I can't speak for them, but personally, it made me a little uncomfortable that they were taking a beloved character from a marginalized faith and treating her like a fanciful idiot.
wait.... scrappy doo shows up and kills velma? Didn't Avacado Animations make a parody of Velma of that happening? Where scooby and scrabby-doo were the same and she was killed over and over again?
I think it was like, ever so often in timelines, the Scooby crew would become self aware, and have to be killed by Scooby, where he then restarts everything to try again
To be fair I and likely others would disapprove of the Hex girl cameo regardless of what she looked like. On account of the key fact this all got greenlit but the Hex girl movie was completely cancelled 😅. Kinda like pouring acid in a fresh wound.
I'm mad about the in universe lore because the Hex Girls aren't supposed to be that much older than the mystery gang. They could have had Thorn play the role they gave to her daughter and it annoys me to no end. Though you're right, I don't think they could have included the Hex Girls in any way and not get backlash. The spite is still so palpable.
Might be the strangest take away here, but just looking at the animation for all the body melting, the possessions and other gory clips in this video, the people who drew this and coloured this, if separated from the Mindy or have no attachment to the writing staff, I'd love to see them do a Scooby Apocalypse run.
I would say "don't hate watch" but that has proven to have the opposite effect via reverse psychology unknowingly, considering it got into the top 5 in US Max. I think the true saying is: "watch something else."
Classic case of "good or bad publicity is still publicity", which is why this show got second season without second thought, hate watch only made it stronger lmao

shoutout to anyone who worked on this show who has to explain away any gap in their employment in the field on their resume by explaining that's what they were working on
Thing is, if they animated any of the horror scenes they really ought to be featured prominently on their portfolios and demo reels. Or if they’re the background painters. It’s not like they made the trash scripts, and a lot of the art is great!
Strictly speaking 95% of actors seem that way, but a lot of them get away with it. Like Bill, Murray has apparently been a complete jackass to work with for the last 20 years, but we've let it slide. So I guess if people think you're funny, even if you're not you can get away with it. But people didn't think Mindy kaling was funny, despite the fact that her and Bill Murray's humor is basically the same, but like making fun of the opposite groups.
It feels like they are trying to do what Smilling Friend did, but without the unique appearance and world design that come with the weird thing that is happening in the show.
Ding dong, the witch is dead! And she's food for the buzzards! Three cheers for Scrappy! Sorry we were so hard on you all those years ago! Who's a good boy? You are! Yes you are!
And Velma’s relationship with Daphne is so toxic and terrible. There chemistry just sucks. The fact Iscream and Fwench Fwy have a healthier relationship and they are a demon and wish dragon from heaven, literally opposites and they make it work.
9:27 Honestly, I wasn’t bothered by an older depiction of one of The Hex Girls. 🤷♂️ What DID bother me was the very idea that ANY depiction of The Hex Girls was used for THIS f🤬ing show!!! 😤
This show has a lot of "I am not Starfire" energy. That type of self-insert media that you've seen snippets of and could swear is just a fan-project at most, but eventually realize has full-on studio support as they shove it next to truly great shows and try to convince you that you have no taste and it's actually the best thing since sliced bread. The James Corden of animation, really...
It pisses me off that they decided to release both more of this and Teen Titans Go but NOT the Coyote Vs Acme movie that everyone said was the greatest movie of all time
they do this because people keep hate-watching. they don't care about the actual quality of the content, if people are hate watching and talking about the thing and pushing it they're getting their traffic and clicks
The whole Hex Girl thing genuinely confuses me though. The original Scooby Gang had Velma as 15, Shaggy and Fred at 17 and Daphne at 16. Which appears to be about the same ages they are here in this show. So..... The Hex Girl aged up from early to mid 20's to looking like maybe mid 40's.... but literally nobody else did? I mean, that actually doesn't make sense. But then again, nothing in this show makes sense. I still genuinely believe Mindy did this just to make people angry and try to ruin Scooby Doo.
I could care less that she was aged up its the fact that in other scooby media the hex girls are conventionally attractive, now she looks like a disheveled hippie woman who thinks shes hot and still hip with the kids, when in reality she is far from that
I took it as they're trying to get the kids who watched the Witch's Ghost originally and are now in their 30s/40s as a way to relate to the Hex Girls being their age in the show. Like a weird nod
Take what I’m about to say with a grain of salt but I’ve heard other people say that Velma was originally a original show with no ties to Scooby-Doo but because WB was nervous to make a new IP they instead made it into a Scooby-Doo show.

It’s actually hilarious that the new most hated character in scooby doo (this Velma self insert) got killed by the old most hated character in scooby doo (Scrappy doo) Velma made Scrappy look pleasant
I'll say it like this the reason people are so mad about the hex girl thing is because the girl looks more older then what she should look like as the ones from the original are believed to be in there twenties to mid twenties. They made this girl look like ozzy osborn at his current age.
There is really no point of this being one of the Hex girls other then to shoehorn in another Scoody doo reference. She could’ve just been any random goth, occult leader, or former band member of whatever and it would’ve had the same impact, she barely appears in general. There was no point of this being Thorn or of the hex girls.
Yea it's weird as the hex girls were the same age as the gang... so shouldn't thorn be velmas age? They could even get more material out of a high school goth instead of a washed up rocker.

I call it, "Mindy's Mysteries." Because the show is so far removed from anything recognizably Scooby-Doo, that it's pretty much just Scooby Doo in name only. Had it not have the Scooby-Doo branding slapped to it, I bet people wouldn't hate it as much. Oh, they'll still hate it, but not as bad.
If I had a nickel for every time Scrappy was the surprise twist main villain in a Scooby Doo IP...I'd have two nickels...which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
Think you could add a third one, as Scrappy was a villain in the Scooby Apocalypse comic, which I'm convinced is where the Velma writers got their idea for him, since he's ALSO a genetically-engineered monster there.
Btw, the practice buying a long season and breaking it into two EXTREMELY common. Nearly every studio and every show does this now. If you see an announcement of a second season/release date for a show within a few short months of the first finishing airing, then it's likely it was done this way. They do this to avoid having to pay artists more when a season gets renewed, since there's union rules regarding it.
I can‘t deal with the fact that Velma, one of the most hated shows ever by literally everybody get’s a second season, but Our Flag Means Death doesn‘t get a third one. I will always be salty about that

That feeling when you are literally such a loathsome character that you by-proxy accidentally redeem one of the most hated characters in children's animation history.
I'm convinced that Scrabby broke into this version of Velma's reality to unironically end this evil version to save us all from any more embarrassment.
Thank you for saying all the nice comments about the artist. I was a character designer on this project and the art team was great to work with. Honestly a well oiled machine compared to the other projects ive work on.
tbh I generally really like the character designs in the show, I could have seen them being used in a much better written show and nobody batting an eye. Solid work
Them brining back Scrappy to kill velma was actually a win in my book. Really hope it stays like that and not the execs blaming on the viewers thinking that it’s getting another season.
Was it accidental though? I mean this show had a terrible response since the moment it was announced. This entire series feels like a social experiment. It's ragebait in its purest expression.
I don't hate Velma because it's "woke", I hate it because Mindy Kaling is losing her goddamn mind and thinks writing for the office makes her capable of carrying big network shows on her shoulders. She should have figured out by the Mindy Project that injecting television with her narcissism wasn't going to make success. People didn't love the Office because of Mindy, they loved it because of Steve and his job acting as Michael. Kelly was the same kind of person as Mindy, so it wasn't very skillful to do that acting. Her relationship with Ryan as Kelly is pretty much the exact same as her relationship with Danny in TMP. Narcissism is not talent, sadly.
The thing is... you can do all sorts of "woke" projects, as long as you do it with actual love for the art and the audience. "Velma" might be a work of narcissism, but it's not even a work of self-love. It's detached, self-loathing and only there to feed into the outrage-machine. Even if the actors match the ethnicity of their characters - who wants to be represented by SUCH characters?
Woke is a 100% legit reason to hate it though. Its just that in velma s case, being woke pales in comparison to other problems. Like comparing acne to skin câncer.
Mindy Kaling made Evil Scrappy to shout, "DON'T LOVE THE DOG!!! SEE!!! IT'S BAD!!! LOVE ME INSTEAD!!!" and everyone is cheering that Minda/Velma dies. Well, at least we don't really care anymore so the hate watching will stop or slow down tremendously so the show won't have a season 3 (hopefully).
Saberspark the problem with the race swapping is that they use it as a shield by saying if you don't like it it's racism, not that they have shitty written.
Not only that but it is a lazy way to go about representation. Making new characters with appealing personalities and their own goals requires actual effort while on the flip side picking any random white character and simply changing their skin tone requires no effort at all.
@@PeterGriffin11I mean that's absolutely not true if anything Since people take "white" as the default the thousands of variations that drastically add nothing are the norm Versus a race swap where there very existence is put into question and is usually done to add a diffrent context to the character For a long time Miles was shat on as just black Peter despite contributing to the new motif of Spiderman being a symbol and not just a single individual For Example not the first colored Velma nor the first Bisexual Velma but just as a premise people threw a lot of racist remarks before the show Same as Norville the issue with him is just he's boring but in the hands of better writers there was a good premise It's actually harder to do race swap especially with the reactionary crowd and people victimize themselve while being racist or sexist
My primary issue wasnt even the race thing. It was all the characters felt flat or so self centered. Then we get into it and all the political social commentary, the most things that important to the mystery goes bit by bit until some big reveal they tended to stumble upon. And that is why it felt unneeded to race swap. Heck call it anything but velma and it may have taken off with others. Then add the treatment for the ghost attacks. Oh no make me laugh or I have to eat to stop this. A potato chip or a half ass laugh isnt going to stop a panic attack on the level it nearly killed one of them from the shock. Then add they tried to make fred unlikable but he was the most relatable if you can say that. Heck even his dad had more character change in one episode then most of them did. Well save norville after this brain thing. But the show felt like nothing is really given time to develop and the things that should be to feel good was ham hawked and rushed. The only thing I grew to not mind was the animation the ghosts felt like a real thing but wasted on insulting mental health. Then as to the hex girl cameo. The only thing I saw most disliking was she almost looks like she took meth. Or something idk but seeing velma scoff at the idea of the occult felt weird to just to get to eat crow when she died. I didnt mind the lead hex girl cameo save the interactions felt odd. But hopefully if they make anymore they get someones help to fix the writing. Because it hurt my head most the time listening to the interactions.
@@demonking-zm3rs I disagree. Most people don't complain about race swapping because their racist but because it's lazy representation and hypocritical as well. Usually people who say race doesn't matter are the same people who would complain if any black character had their race changed to anything else. Race swapping of any kind is always going to be controversial and divisive. I think A better solution would be to stop race swapping characters and just makes new ones. Also in the case of Miles Morales. I know some people didn't like him in the comics because of how they killed off peter to introduce him and when Peter did inevitably come back people weren't fond of how he was characterized and felt that his personality was off and some people felt that the writers were making Peter unlikable to make Miles look better. People aren't always going to immediately like new characters but overtime once Miles came into his own people warmed up to him.

The live action Scooby-Doo already used Scrappy as the secret villain. You can’t do a masterful twist like that more than once
No no you misunderstand - Scrappy is the hero here.
@khazz33 that was my first thought too! The live action was very good, I watched it a few million times. Velma tried to frick the good memories.

@@HiddenDarkHM wrong demographic to do that to, in my opinion. As you say in the end, the only thing many people woud take away from this choice Is "eww she doesn't look like a teen anymore and therefore is unf*ckable"

I don't think this version of Velma should even be called Velma. She needs a different name or something to separate her from the real Velma.

Scrappy kills Velma? Good boy Scrappy. You've redeemed yourself.
Its funny how in all the episodes they try to make fun of Fred and in the end, he is the only good character
Him and the brave hero Scrappy. 🫡
Sweet irony.
So reminder the reason why scooby doo is not in velma Is because scooby doo is what makes a kids show a kids show
But Scrappy doo as a evil super soldier monster thing going on a rampage is allowed on velma ?
Of course because only an Annoying character can kill an annoying self insert character
Look let’s just be glad Scooby Doo was left out. We wouldn’t want him to be figuratively butchered like the rest of the cast. Also dang it this comment section is infested with bots.
I mean, that’s what basically happened in the Scooby Apocalypse series by DC Comics. Way more interesting than Velma btw.
Although in one of the episodes from the first half there is a Scooby Doo skeleton buried underground.
There's a demonic monster and a hero on your thumbnail...I think you all know which is which XD
JOEMAMA
Velma SUCKS
"Mister president, there was a second season."
I propose we call it ''Velmer'' to separate it from the real Velma.
I think Mindy is better
Afterall, Mindy plays herself because no one can see Velma in this ‚Velma‘.
And I think it should serve as a signal to how we think of her now…
Dude, come on! Dropping the hard r like that? Seriously?
@@EngineerMonkeyBTD6 What is the ‚Hard R‘ supposed to mean?
Does it stand for ‚r@cist‘? Or for something completely different?
And all what OP said was ‚Velmer‘… I don’t see anything wrong with it by looking at it
Velmindy, since it's just Mindy Kaling wearing a shitty Velma cosplay and spitting atrocious slime.
Thank you 😂
@@questworldiangreenknight7455 No prob. I live for the lulz. XD
Think you could add a third one, as Scrappy was a villain in the Scooby Apocalypse comic, which I'm convinced is where the Velma writers got their idea for him, since he's ALSO a genetically-engineered monster there.
@@Sea-Salt ...Huh...TIL THAT'S a thing. And ofc it's DC, that explains a lot. O.o
That’s a weird way of saying hero, scrappy is indeed the chosen one for this show
From the little I've seen of this show, the only part i genuinely enjoyed was the oddly wholesome interaction with Fred and Velma's mom
I will always be salty about that
It was lgbt bullshit,I'm glad its gone
I think it's just a Halloween special
Both seasons were made at the same time.
@@AllMight6 yeah, found that out later on, but the point still stands
The fact that this got approved and warner never dreamed of approving Batman beyond
I am 100% not surprised that "season 2" is originally season one, but cut in half. Streaming services are always trying to pull this fast one.
2:10 The most hated character in the history of hated characters Actually redeemed themselves???? I can't actually I'm saying it but Good job Scrappy!!!!
Hey, i guess even the most hated characters of fiction can redeem themselves, if they just try!
Well, except the the rest of _the..._ Whole_ cast..._ And uh... *Y'know what? Nevermind."*
That feeling when you are literally such a loathsome character that you by-proxy accidentally redeem one of the most hated characters in children's animation history.
I laughed so hard when I heard she was killed by scrappy 💀💀💀
Dang the Scrappy redemption arc is crazy
I'm convinced that Scrabby broke into this version of Velma's reality to unironically end this evil version to save us all from any more embarrassment.

Thank you for saying all the nice comments about the artist. I was a character designer on this project and the art team was great to work with. Honestly a well oiled machine compared to the other projects ive work on.
tbh I generally really like the character designs in the show, I could have seen them being used in a much better written show and nobody batting an eye. Solid work
Did you get comments direct from Mindy?
@@HebiHouse I never directly interacted with her but she was nice about work just particular . That’s any show tho
@@cyanthrope thank you! Again the art team was great and my art lead did a great job with the style
This show does not deserve such good art in it. The character designs are phenomenal!
I don't like shows that think they're smarter than I am. I'm glad you mentioned that. I had the same feeling as well.
Them brining back Scrappy to kill velma was actually a win in my book. Really hope it stays like that and not the execs blaming on the viewers thinking that it’s getting another season.
The good ending.
This show succeeded in one thing. Making me actually like Scrappy Doo for once.
The best thing about the show is the accidental redemption of Scrappy
Was it accidental though? I mean this show had a terrible response since the moment it was announced. This entire series feels like a social experiment.
It's ragebait in its purest expression.
Scrappy's redemtion arc required him to kill something even worse than himself
Mindy really just played herself in the office, and was the annoying gossiper of the show. Who would’ve thought she had no freaking talent xD
yeah , me too, but also because its woke
@@fermintenava5911 thats just cope, woke needs to go out the door already
Mindy Kaling made Evil Scrappy to shout, "DON'T LOVE THE DOG!!! SEE!!! IT'S BAD!!! LOVE ME INSTEAD!!!" and everyone is cheering that Minda/Velma dies.
Well, at least we don't really care anymore so the hate watching will stop or slow down tremendously so the show won't have a season 3 (hopefully).
@SkibiditoiIetyesyes_UTTP The fuck are you?
@@PeterGriffin11I mean that's absolutely not true if anything Since people take "white" as the default the thousands of variations that drastically add nothing are the norm
Versus a race swap where there very existence is put into question and is usually done to add a diffrent context to the character
For a long time Miles was shat on as just black Peter despite contributing to the new motif of Spiderman being a symbol and not just a single individual
For Example not the first colored Velma nor the first Bisexual Velma but just as a premise people threw a lot of racist remarks before the show
Same as Norville the issue with him is just he's boring but in the hands of better writers there was a good premise
It's actually harder to do race swap especially with the reactionary crowd and people victimize themselve while being racist or sexist
