Im torn on the simplified designs. When i first saw some of the designs for the new S/V pokémon i didnt like them. But after i saw them rendered in the OG pixelated formats, and even in a recreation of Sugimori's style it all clicked and i liked them a lot more

I think Pokemon needs to start doing what Zelda has been doing all along: alternate between open-world games and 2D-style games. The 2D games would require less development time, and alternating releases would allow the open-world dev team more time to cook. There's clearly still an audience for 2D Pokemon if the ROM hack community is anything to go by.

2D anime graphical video games are pretty much easy to make, and they have saved memory space for extra gameplay content.

I’ve always wanted custom options since discovering nuzlocks. I love pokemon and will gladly play their games.
Sometimes you want to shut your brain off and just glide though the game, but other times you want a real challenge, to have a real meaning to your team and their move sets. Giving us custom difficulty would allow us this.

The other being that felt like there was less secrets, that is finding something that is hidden that I cannot see from running all over the place. There being some really hidden pokemon that could only be found in out of the way places, or certain requirements. Outside of say the legendaries.

The problem is that ever since the Switch Era started, Gamefreak has been making each game from scratch with nothing to build upon. If they would’ve stuck to one cohesive style they wouldn’t have to make assets and code from scratch every game development cycle, like every era before it

There is a claim that the Pokémon models and moves were taken from the 3DS games. If that is true, they should have copied the human character models also from the 3DS games, and just change the hairstyles, eyes, and clothes as a shortcut in creating new characters and even based on the past ones in a similar ORAS manner. I can even take 3D Pokémon games designed like LGPE.

Gen 2 pokemon were designed at the same time with Gen 1 ones. So the `and maybe a bit of Gen 2 as well` makes no sense since they literally came from the same artistic generation, being made at the same time. But I get what you were trying to say, no worries.

  • @viruschris3160
    @viruschris3160 7 днів тому +1

Honestly, I don’t mind that Pokémon has a light-hearted story. Though I like some stories like Explorers of Sky, but Pokémon don’t need an overly deep and dark story to make it interesting.
    Simple is fine.
I wish the 3D models were better. The fact that the models from Pokémon Colosseum, XD, and Battle Revolution are better with amazing animation is a crime that GF can’t do it. They used the Stadium models as a base!
I don’t like the Open World of SV. I think something similar to Legends Arceus with the segment world parts. And having Pokémon with field abilities like surf, dive, cut, flash and such to open up and explore hidden places would be fun.
Also I really don’t like how they keep on removing options like the Set and Switch option in SV. I keep Switch but I know some people prefer Set so losing that sucked for them.
Not to mention not having all of the Pokémon in the same game anymore.
There’s things I like and things I hate with Pokémon games, but I wish they were consistent with the features instead of removing them.
Also, Character Creation is the worst with the lack of clothing options. Doesn’t matter what face I create, no one could tell how different I look because everyone wears the same outfit.
I miss Third version and prefer it over DLC.
Who knows what Gen 10 will bring to the table. But simplifying some things might help in the long run.

End of the day, its a Nintendo franchise, like Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Animal Crossing & Splatoon (albiet with GameFreak as an unfortunate middleman). These franchises don't need robust stories, really nothing more than the basics, but we should hope for more innovation within their gameplay formulas to keep them from getting stale. The last couple games achieved this already IMO and were excellent, though GF dropped the ball on graphical quality and performance. Beyond that, they are hitting the mark on how they should be and people are overstating the issues they have.

This may sound like a weird suggestion, but this series really does need to introduce adult or YA characters who have arcs around mature decision-making.
Leon's stake in the Sword and Shield story would have been so much more interesting if he had to question whether he wants to be a champion in a corrupt Pokemon league. Or maybe introduce a sibling character who had to put their career on hold to support a rival or the MC, but decided to pick it up again. Or a character who got hurt because of the actions of the rival, which forces both characters to reevaluate their approach. Or an evil team member rival who has to make a "push the button" moment. The character writing is so patronizing nowadays.

    • @ErekLadd

I do not think Pokémon needs a massive open world, especially if Game Freak is involved.
Smaller versions of the wild area in between major hubs that are designed well with full detail should be enough in the my opinion .
Smaller, more varied environments like we saw in Arceus maybe?

  • @frost8077
    @frost8077 6 днів тому

OMG, that Gold in Bravely Default art style looked amazing! I agree that voice acting is starting to become needed now since the newer games feel strange without it. Many of the new Pokemon designs don't appeal to me either, as if they aren't even Pokemon. Ten years ago, I remember upsetting people by saying to either increase the move list from 4 to 6 or completely remake the battle mechanics entirely to a single energy meter for all moves, so I guess that's too much of a radical change for people to make it more like other RPGs. The idea of a Charizard forgetting how to bite and scratch just seems outdated to me, and it would also solve the HM issue from taking up move slots. If I was in charge of directing a new Pokemon game, it would certainly divide the fan base apart and you'll never hear the end of it.

Why does everything in the modern era have to be super duper HD 3000k, real life simulator, textured facial pores, in fantasy games? Pokemon is MADE for 2D maybe 2.5D. Some Pokemon just look uncanny in 3D. Idk I’m not a fan. There’s literally years worth of post game content in some of the DS games. There will always be something to do in those games. These modern Pokemon games just aren’t it in my brutally honest opinion “opinion”. What’s wrong with animation and sprites? Sprites can look SO GOOD, with modern technology. It’s just a sad state of gaming right now, hoping it’s a trend of all the 3D super open world stuff. An open world 2D sprite game would be amazing for Pokemon.

    • @ErekLadd

I'll take a new pokemon game in 2D over anything they release now - hands down! I'd love an HD-2D look but I know they'd probably never do it. The sprites on the older games looked great! I'd love for them to go back to that as well.

  • @scarletsabre8383

The main problem with modern Pokémon is that whoever is running Gamefreak/The Pokémon Company just aren't giving the devs the time and resources that they need.
The games are being churned out with the budget of a ham sandwich to maximise the profit margins because they know the games will sell like crazy regardless of how they come out.
And the games HAVE to come out every two and a half/three years at most, because they HAVE to come out at the same time as the new anime series, or the new movie, or the new waves of merch and trading cards. Pokémon is like the fifth biggest IP on the planet and PRINTS money, but it's popularity is being used as an excuse for the games getting actively worse, because they HAVE to come out on this immutable schedule because they're SO popular
    It's infuriating

If Pokemon Black/White, Sun/Moon/Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon and Scarlet/Violet teach us anything, It is that pokemon definitely can focus a lot more on and make great stories when they are the last pokemon games on that system, most likely because they don't have to spend all their time with making/importing all new pokemon models and animations and can just focus on making the best pokemon experience they can
I know they will never do, But I do kind of wish that they would keep it to 2 pokemon games per console instead of 3 (a remake and a new generation game) so that they don't feel like they have to keep rushing games just for merchandising

  • @CuppaGi

Stamina is a tired mechanic, and yet for Pokemon...
If trainer battles were 2v2 or 3v3, I could see a system similar to the Brave and Default system from Bravely Default. Playing defensive lets you build up actions, or you can go into the negatives by taking multiple actions now in exchange for needing to recover for multiple turns.
If Pokemon were bulkier too, it would help a lot in removing that feeling of "Press A to win". Sure, having a type advantage is still preferable. But it no longer reliably gets OHKOs, encouraging players to actually strategize. Use set up moves, use hinderance moves to give themselves more time to build up to the big hits.
Maybe take a page from GO's book and have the big attacks require an energy you build up by using smaller attacks.

for the pokemon battles. i hope gamefreak works to streamline the process of battles. because pokemon battles are often SLOWWWWWWWWWWW because everything has to be loaded into 1 text or one specific animation. I don't need Fury Attack to use the animation 5 different times bruh.
Also I think the friendship system should be tuned for outside of story battles as well. I think the games miss the interaction from the trainer itself. I think the friendship system should be tuned into some sort of Command system. Like there is gauge that can be used for different commands like "DODGE THE POKEMON'S NEXT ATTACK" or "HIT THEM WITH A CRITICAL!" or "C'MON PLEASE ENDURE THIS ATTACK!"
Make the friendship mechanics not RNG, instead make it an actual thing with pokemon battles. Legends Arceus kinda made that into a thing with the Attack or Speed command system.

    • @THGMR-ox7sd
      @THGMR-ox7sd 7 днів тому +1

I agree with the moves like fury attack not needing to play the animation 5 times. Just play it once and have each hit just happen instead of slowly interrupting. If a crit happens then the game should obviously slow down to tell you each hit that crit but other than that, we don’t need to see the same animation 50 times for each hit.

I honestly think they should do away with the open world model and swap back to the original formula, just in a more modern way. The world of Dragon Quest 11 would be a great example of a world feeling grand in scale, lived in and vibrant, but still structured. I would love a new region where the routes are more like what we had in sword and shield, but treated more like levels in a traditional JRPG rather than a camera locked, railroaded path. Make every city a good sized RPG town with loads to do instead of spreading side quests out in an empty open world. Though I feel that may be a bit of an ambitious ask considering what we’ve gotten so far 😅

Open World sucks. What we need is the games to give us what games like Crystal, Emerald, Platinum and BW/BW2 did: Rewardable Exploration.
Emerald had Shoal Cave where its the only place you can find Spheal and Snorunt, Mirage Tower where you find the fossils, Meteor Falls where Lunatone, Solrock and Bagon are located, Desert Underpass where you can find Dittos, the Battle Frontier has Artisan Cave withonly Smeargles, you can dive underwater and find Clamperl, Chinchou and Relicanth, Mt. Pyre where you can find Ghost type pokemon and Vulpix, the dedicated Caves of Groundon and Kyogre, Sky Pillar where there are a few rare pokemon and at the end Rayquaza.
The Regis caves and their intricate puzzles.
There is so much, so much to explore and to discover.
Gen 4 and Gen 5 games are the same thing. After you are done with the main story there is still so much to do.
Nowadays once you are done with the story there is a little side quest and boom you are done. Go beat that battle facility cuz we didn't bother expand the world of this region for you to explore.
That's the problem with recent Pokemon titles, starting from generation 6

The 3d graphics in FF12 from the ps2 area and remake look amazing as well as the amazing combat system. Coliseum, XD and Battle Revolution has way better graphics than current Pokemon games on switch and they are 15 - 20+ year old games on the GameCube and Wii.

I don’t mean this to sound like a snob, but if you’ve never really cared about competitive play, then you wouldn’t really understand why the battle system actually works really well. Your level 99 Charizard with fire blast or blast burn is not going to do a thing in a actual competitive battle, but it will bully its way through the main story of the game. If you play any ROM hacks online you’ll notice a difficulty setting that is really pivotal in upping The experience.. a smarter AI for example with level cap on the next gym makes things a lot more interesting. For example you can’t get your starter to level 16 and evolve it before your first gym if they cap out at let’s say level 14 and actually have a cohesive strategy when playing on a harder difficulty

No that's totally fair! I didn't have really anyone to play or trade with as a kid so of course I would brute force my way through the story. I suppose it's all situational in that regard. I'd love to get some more challenge through some of the rom hacks though, that sounds pretty interesting. I know next to nothing about those so I'd be happy to take some suggestions!

You kind of lose me at #4. The formula is good.

Bring it back to the basics!! Sun and moon/ X and Y were trash!! 3D models were ugly and the grass areas were pathetic!! Bring back pokemon walking sprites like in HG/SS. Make interesting map designs again. Back in the day we had to use our imaginations to expand the world of Pokemon. Now that they're trying to bring that world "to life", the games feel less alive than ever before.

I gotta say I agree with all of your points, which are hard to disagree with. I think Pokemon has become a hostage of its own system. Franchises like Zelda, Mario and many others have found success by changing game mechanics, finding new combats, new systems. Meanwhile pokemon has found itself in a situation where the main games can't inovate much. Their battle system is quite outdated but if they change it into an action game or whatever, their base fans will complaint as well, because people are so used to turn based.
I'm not saying they need to get out of turn based, but it is sad to see they can't take risks and try out new stuff like other franchises often do.

It can definitely stay turn based but just change the way that the battles actually happen. For example the stamina thing that I mentioned in the video or some sort of cool down period where it forces you to change the way you think. Some sort of new mechanic would have to be implemented to make it fresh but I honestly doubt they have the guts to do it 🤣

@@ErekLadd Exactly! I just want to see some innovation, anything! haha
unfortunately they have to incentive to do so. Their games are "cheap" as they don't change much graphically or gameplay and they still sell a lot. Pokemon is basically Fifa in that regard. I know it is a weird comparison, but it fits.

PP could charge for stronger moves so you would have to Tackle and Ember before unleashing another Fire Blast!
I like the idea of the strongest Pokémon charging slower while weak ones charging faster leveling the playing field some or a mechanic targeting unevolved Pokémon making them usable through the entire game.

I finally got around to playing Palworld 2 days ago with my gf and my god, even tho the gameplay isn’t truly like Pokémon, that game really feels like an evolution of what Pokémon games should play like. I haven’t had so much fun going on an actual adventure with someone else in a game in so long. I love how much of a role the creatures actually play into the world beyond just battles. Pokémon series has gotten so stale and lazy. The only reason the games keep selling is bc of the IP, no matter how half baked the games may be

Interesting! I’ve yet to play palworld but it seems decent enough. But yeah Pokemon will always sell incredibly well even if it’s half baked!

Change lol? That ship has LONG since sailed. Pokemon as a franchise lost its own identity/ran out of ideas after Gen 5 with the introduction of Megas and Fairy types. And it only have deviated even further down the 'rabbit hole' to the point of unrecognizable with the introduction of Z-moves, and Gigantamax. Along with different regional mons, and alternate Paradox versions of said regional mons. This was NOT the kind of change Pokemon needed AT ALL. 🙄 But what's done is done. It's too late to try and go back to fix it all now with everything that has been said 'n done. Pokemon had EVERY opportunity to make the series something more over the years with its material, but instead they chose to go down the direction of pandering whatever dumb ideas that seemed "cool" at the time. And to whoever that asked for this? I don't even wanna know. It's shameful that even FANMADE games are better than the actual main games... Ironic how the fans had a better vision for the overall franchise than the actual creators themselves. Smfh.
