I went for the 1.5m (5 foot) telescopic rod and reel (Amazon) which came in the Lixada bag (see pictures and video) as my local river is not huge.
The rod is very well made and although most of the action is in the tip section that is to be expected due to the telescopic nature of the rod - the lower sections need to be quite stiff since the rod folds up into itself.
The closed length of the rod is only 31cm (approx. 12") making it a good choice for packing into a backpack or suitcase and the reel has a folding handle which allows for flatter packing.
I would advise getting a reel cover to keep the reel clean if it will be spending time in and out of a backpack.
The reel has a nicely made design which incorporates an effective drag dial and a handle lock to prevent handle being turned backward if you want to rely on the drag while playing fish (that is my choice of set up - lock ON and drag set to enable a decent sized fish to safely pull line). Reel fits securely into the reel seat and the seat has a double ring lock system to ensure that the reel stays in place while in use.
Casting is easy and the bale arm doesn't flick back over while casting unless it is knocked quite hard. Using the 1.5m rod I can easily cast an 8g spinner around 30m without much effort - that gets it to the other side of the widest part of my local river so it's all good there.
Reeling in is very smooth and totally silent indicating that the internals of the reel are well put together and running properly.
The guide rings on the rod are a decent size which is great to see since many of the small telescopic rods available online have tiny guide rings which affect casting distance - this feels more like a 'proper' rod.
As with all telescopic rods care must be given while opening and closing each section of the rod and it's definitely best to avoid pulling on the rings or they will eventually weaken and snap off - I've shown the correct method in the attached video for reference.
So, in summary.....
Does this rod and reel combo perform well? YES
Will it catch fish? YES
Will it last a long time? YES, with sensible care.
Could you rely on it in a survival situation? YES
Will it pack down into a backpack? YES, although a reel cover would be advised to protect the reel.
How many stars? 5, all the way.

Nice review, the rod and reel set up looks like it's worth buying. What's the name of the silver spinner you were using?
@@wolfenstein6676 That one is a 'silver fox' and it is a weighted version of the Mepps type spinners. It rattles a bit in the water which is meant to attract fish more but I don't fine them any more or less attractive to fish than the ordinary mepps or similar spinners.

Thank you so much for this video. I have been looking for a good compact fishing rod and reel, but, none of the reviews for other ones are very good. They are mostly made very cheaply and not worth the money. Then I came across your video and I am going to buy two of these. This is exactly what I have been looking for.
Yes they are very good and as I mentioned in the video / description make sure you go for the rod with the bigger rings (they do 2 versions) as the quality is better with the type I showed in this video - that's the one I link to in the video description.
As long as you have realistic expectations for the rod it will perform well but it's not going to be hauling huge carp in without some risk of breaking, lol

Yes it is much better than the other telescopic rods I've bought in the last year or so.
Today the problem is that without honest reviews online it's very difficult choosing an item of any type and I've bought loads of gear to bulk out my survival / bushcraft kit which has been a pure waste of time, recommended by people who have either never used it or have been paid to 'feature' it on their channels.
You'd be amazed at the offers of payment I've had to 'feature' products on my other channel - it's like manufacturers know they can buy most people once they get to a certain level of success or subscribers.
Balls to that, I don't need the money and I don't want 'fame' so if something is crap, I'll say it's crap.

Yes, I bought a few different rods and reels and this was definitely the best combo although Lixada do a couple of different versions themselves. The cheaper one with smaller rod rings definitely wasn't as good.

I've never fished in my life and just picked up one as an entry into it, didn't want to spend tonnes in case it isn't actually a hobby I'll enjoy (and God knows, I've made that mistake with enough hobbies 😂) so really pleased to hear its a decent little starter set up.

Well i have bought this rod and a month in.....it definitely is not bad especially for a beginner like me think i paid 42 British pounds for mine and its decent at that price range. You have to pay well double to even tripple that for a very strong durability high spec one so thank you for the review. I am enjoying fishing.

Yes it is fine for smaller situations but for sea fishing (long casts) or larger fish it would be risking damage to the rod / reel. My son and I have caught loads of trout on this set up with small spinners on my local river. The rod is fine for casting 20-25m with light spinners but anything further would require a 'proper' set up.

Subscribed, just bought this rod from Amazon. Going to try it out 2mrw. Any advice on what's a good line to use? It came with a reel of line and a few accessories but no description on what the accessories are. I'm a newbie at this. You mentioned a spinner? What about hooks, best type? I live in Bournemouth so going to fish on the coast mainly. Any advice would be appreciated.
I'm just using standard 6lb breaking strain line as the fish in my river are not very big. Any spinner / baited hook suitable for the situation will catch fish if the fish feel like biting but as far as sea fishing goes I really don't have much idea about specific set ups as I very rarely fish anything other than fresh water. If I was going to fish the sea I'd go for a reel suitable for saltwater as it is very corrosive. When I've done sea fishing it has been using feathers from a boat or spinning with silver 'spoon' type traditional spinners for Mackerel and Pollock from rock drop offs from the shore in Scotland so I'm not exactly a fountain of knowledge where sea fishing is concerned, lol.
My preferred way of fishing is fly fishing in small rivers.
Very nice review. I'm new to fishing, and I'm considering this as a starter kit. I'm a backpacker and would like to use this mainly at larger reservoirs... which size would you recommend? I was looking at the 2.4M version, but after watching your video, I'm not sure if a smaller version would do me. Also, what would you recommend for narrow rivers with stronger streams, and what about sea fishing? I suppose there is no such thing as one fishing system that fits all purposes, so apologies for the newbie questions...
An 8' (2.4m) rod will cover most situations but for saltwater ideally you'd use a specific rod / reel made for saltwater use as it will quickly corrode metal parts unless they are stainless steel.
The 'best' choice of rod will depend on the water situation for example in the sea you could be fishing straight into deep water and only need a 6'-8' rod or may have to cast out to find deeper water which will need a much longer rod - same with reservoirs. I'd say get one rod and reel for the smaller rivers / streams and then go for a larger set up for sea and reservoirs.

Subbed. Bro give me some tips, i tested tons of baits and equipment but here in Sweden I just dont get anything not even a hit in a few days it is actualy driving me mad. Also what size rod you recommend for shore lake fishing? Is 2.7meter overkill?
(my other account) I'm not really up on what works in Sweden as I'm in the UK but the length of rod will depend on how heavy you need to fish and how far you need to cast. Most of the videos I have seen in Sweden have people fishing from a boat for Perch and Pike with a variety of spinners which seem to work well. The Mepps type spinners are particularly good for Perch.
Fly rod would probably be the way to go for Trout, Arctic Char and migratory fish but they will also take small spinners too so I'd say give the Mepps type spinners a go of you only have spinning rods. The Mepps spinners tend to stay quite high in the water too so are good for shallower areas.
I'm not really a bait fisherman but a good old earthworm has always worked for me - everything seems to eat them.

@@ozzygrunt4812 I generally use 6 lb Daiwa Sensor Monofilament for river fishing (spinning, bait) and 4 lb for fly fishing but anything does the job.

@@ozzygrunt4812 For most fishing in the UK there is no need to go so heavy, especially if you're after Trout in small to medium sized rivers. You'll catch many more fish on lighter gear as the fish are less likely to see the line and you will be able to throw the bait / spinner much further on 6 lb line as opposed to 20 lb line too. I wouldn't go above 10 lb for river fishing in the UK unless I was expecting Salmon or Pike.

I think it is Daiwa line - 6lbs breaking strain. That is quite light line but the fish in my local river rarely get over a pound in weight and I like to fish with very light gear.
The Chinese have improved a lot in quality but you must know what brand is good. New carbon rods with aluminium seats are better than glass fibre. Managed to drag 15 kg catfish to shallow water ! The Chinese brand, I tried the Dukio brand, feel and spin like a Daiwa. It's beautiful design and painted. I tried it because, I was curious. Reviews said it's good and 1/5 the price of mid range Daiwa, so I bought 2. Will buy 2 more if there's no tangle or gearing problem. They even sell an optional double handle !

I'd personally say go for something made for saltwater use for both rod and reel if you're sea fishing as a cheap reel and rod fittings will quickly corrode if exposed to saltwater even if you wash it in fresh water after use - stick to freshwater with this one.
As far as gear for sea fishing goes it is so varied it would be best to ask a shop specializing in fishing gear - just tell them what you're fishing for and what you expect from a rod and reel and they'll have numerous suggestions.
Sea fishing isn't my area of knowledge. Best of luck when you go fishing.

What kind of fish weight can this rod handle? I have a canal in my backyard so i don't think i would have to worry about big or giant fish
I've caught fish to over 2 lbs but it would probably handle much larger fish when handled properly - some people can break good rods with bad technique, lol
For $17 for a full kit including rod and reel that is an incredible deal so you'd be ,mad not to go for that - just make sure that the rod has the bigger line rings as shown in this video since there is another version with smaller rings which is not as well made (and will probably fail quickly).

I wouldn't recommend a telescopic rod for fishing in the ocean unless you're fishing for small fish off the shore - get a proper sea rod for sea fishing.

According to some of the Amazon reviews people have caught double figure carp and pike on this rod. Biggest fish I've has was only about 1.5 lbs (under a kilo) but even when the spinner was stuck in trees or on the bed of the river I could rip it out hard without damage to the rod.

Lol what do u mean? That's how u cast a spinning reel. A baitcaster type has the reel on top when u cast. But he used it how it's supposed to be

You could certainly catch decent sized fish with this rod as long as they were netted or beached to land them but it is definitely not strong enough for lifting large fish up a ledge / pier.
Ive just bought one from ebay for £19.99. (2.4m with LE3000 reel). Ive never fished before in my life, but i want to start drop shot fishing as part of my bushcraft journey. What are your thoughts? I've used mine for spinning, free running bait and ledger fishing and it's been great. I just used it 2 days ago, same rod and reel in this video.
For beginners it's as good as anything else out there since the skills necessary to properly use any rod and reel are transferable to all types of rods and reels learning to fish with anything is worth more than gold.

The skills we learn are currency which will never devalue and if the clown world we're living in finally collapses you'll be in the top 1% of the 1% if you have a varied skill set.

Would you be able to catch mackerel from a pebble beach with this rod (or a bigger size version?) I'm new to all this so would be very grateful for feedback.
The 8' (2.4m) version would be the one to go for if you're spinning for mackerel and while I'd always say go for a 'proper' saltwater set up for saltwater fishing just make sure you wash the gear down with fresh water to remove saltwater after use and it should last OK.

@@simonellis778 Telescopic rods are really just occasional use / travel rods in my opinion. However, I'm not really one to be giving advice on sea fishing as 99.9% of my fishing is using a fly rod on rivers.
Saying that, I've just bought a sea spinning set up consisting of a 9' (2.7m) Abu Garcia Vendetta rod, Shimano Nasci C3000 reel, 40lb braid and 15lb mono as the trace. That will chuck 30g-40g spinners easily and handle heavier lures too if necessary.
I've not used it in the sea yet but it will be getting baptised when I go up to the Isle of Skye later this year and pounding some Pollack from the rocks.

Sounds like the mechanism may have snapped off inside - I'm assuming that you mean the lock which prevents the handle turning anti-clockwise?
Guys, please check the length of your rod. I checked mine, and found the actual length of 163cm for the specification of 180cm. A big difference !!!

@@pondguru They have 1.3m, 1.5m, 1.8m 2.1m and 2.4m. Obviously they made 163cm for size 1.8m (180cm). I found other buyers in China had same complaints.
@@Marc_Yu Is that for the version of this rod with the big guide rings (as shown in this video) or for the smaller guide rings (which is the one I advise people don't buy in the video description)?. The type with the smaller rings is not very good at all but I've got 1.5, 1.8 and 2.4 versions of this rod (bigger guide rings) and they're all spot on for length and quality.

@@Marc_Yu That's a major bummer and why I'd definitely only recommend the version with the bigger rings. The type with smaller rings seems to be a totally differently constructed rod.
What line do you use for this rod
It is 6lb line. Rod still going well and we use it weekly. I've been really bouncing it when the spinner gets stuck on the bottom or in trees and no damage to the rod - it's much stronger than it seems at a first look.

The longer and heavier versions of this rod? Maybe but I'd still say go for a traditional 2-3 piece rod designed for the purpose - it will cost way more but will have so much more strength.

Can it be used in saltwater fishing?
The rod yes but I doubt that the reel would hold up very well in saltwater. For any long term use it would be best to go for a saltwater reel but for occasional fishing in the sea this would be OK as long as it was well washed through with fresh water after every use. Definitely best to go for a saltwater set up for saltwater use.

I can use this rod on sea?
People do use them for sea fishing but for something which will have long term use in marine environments it would be worth going for an upgraded reel which is stainless steel and saltwater resistant.

Highly WOULDN'T recommend it says it's made of carbon fibre but the top 30% of the rod is made from cheap wood. My rod snapped on a small snag that's when I found out it was made of wood
I'm not sure what you have bought but to my knowledge nobody makes wooden rods any more and telescopic rods are never made of wood or wood derived products - are you sure you're posting the comment on the correct video?
I bought a this exact same rod as in the video, worked fine for months until I broke it on a small snag, to my surprise the tip of the rod was made of wood
@@laurencemorley2189 That is madly strange as mine is most definitely carbon as are all my various telescopic rods. Wood wouldn't work for a fishing rod unless it was a non-telescopic split cane type construction and as a telescopic rod needs to have sections which slot inside each other the sections need to be made of something which doesn't swell or contract with moisture / temperature.

@@laurencemorley2189 I don't suppose that you have any pictures of the broken section or the rod do you? - I've had a look at the rods I've got and there is no way a wooden section could be made so thin and still function as a rod. My email is sales@filterpro.co.uk

I bought one of these in and can safely say it is the worst rod I have ever bought ,absolute junk,if you want a decent telescopic rod buy the Dam shadow.
There are 2 versions of this rod - one with small rings and one with larger rings as featured here.
The type with the small rings is definitely not a good rod which is why I recommend that people go for the one exactly as featured in this video.
However, the DAM rod has better fittings and is definitely a 'proper' spinning rod so thanks for the recommendation.
@@ThousandYardStare My apologies for thinking that was the rod I bought but you are right my one had the small rings and I honestly thought after the first cast that I could cast a boat rod farther ,it was really that bad but thanks for correcting me.
@@jvtaxi3766 (my other channel) thanks for the confirmation. The version with bigger rinds is still quite 'stiff' with a very pronounced tip action but it's definitely better made than the small ring version.
Both of them probably are nowhere near as good as the DAM rod and I'm really tempted to buy that.
@@pondguru I have the 7ft version of the Dam rod and I can honestly say its a brilliant little tough rod ,I hooked into a huge pike while fishing for trout last year and the rod was bent doubled and never snapped and I was kinda glad it got off after 10 mins ,I would say it is a better rod than the shimano stc mini I had and it retracts to a tiny size .
@@jvtaxi3766 (my other channel) That sounds awesome to me and I'm glad the rod performed well. I've only caught a couple of pike but they definitely raised my pulse.
Funny you rate this so high, as its a literal piece of garbage 🗑 bought one for a joke competition with my brother, the tip sections and likely the whole rods are made of the cheapest materials, looks like standard fibre glass, snapped within 10 minutes of being out the bag.
Both my son and I used our rods dozens of times since this video was made and they're still fine. The size we have isn't for heavy fishing so we use in small river for fish up to 1.5 lbs or so.
Maybe they have changed the manufacturing since we got ours? There are at least 2 versions from Lixada available online and the type we have have the bigger line rings.
