For anyone who actually visits Boston, this museum is amazing and they 100% still have the empty frames hanging where the art was stolen. It's very cool.
It's also like an "In Memoriam" to honor the lost art I guess. It's very obvious that due to the high profile nature of the works that whoever stole them kept the paintings for themselves. There's no way they can sell them in the open art market because they will get instantly recognized as the lost masterpieces. So they gotta be sitting in someone's basement or vault or hidden in an attic or behind a wall somewhere. Whether or not they surface one day remains to be seen. And that to me, would be the fascinating sequel and conclusion to this mystery. 😉
I agree! - Because they are not allowed to change anything. It was in her will to leave everything as is ... it never crossed her mind that this would happen. LOL It really is a great museum though
My mother went a few years ago and raved on about it! Shame that the paintings were stolen but when you have that much currency worth of art, others will want a piece of it.

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum is unbelievable. Before this happened, I remember going there to write a paper for an art class. I spent a considerable amount of time there. I don't remember, but I'm sure I a saw these paintings when I was there, because I covered every inch of that place. It's pretty incredible.
This is so exciting!! Went to this museum and it was chilling to see the empty frames. Hopefully this doc can help get the word out to a new generation
Imagine someone going into their parents/grandparents attic, seeing some rolled up paintings and casually tossing them out, completely oblivious to what they really are.
That is my deepest fear that this will be done to one of these pictures. Thank God Netflix is stirring the pot again to keep them in the cultural memory!
@@jessicamoore1314 These were almost certainly stolen as collateral for other things, not for their artistic value. Check out the Swedish National Museum theft from the early 2000s. That's why there's such a high risk of accidental destruction or mishandling damage. This isn't a movie where some corrupt billionaire keeps them in a secret gallery in his mansion. Some mouth breather has them rolled up in a basement lockup somewhere waiting for the day he gets arrested.
Watching this documentary, my heart broke for the stolen artwork so many people will never get to see. Seeing how one of the potential owners treated it so recklessly, just letting it waste away, rolling up centuries old artwork so it wound up cracking. Art should be enjoyed by everyone, not just the guy with half a million to throw around. And it was so infuriating that the FBI never really cared to give a good investigation & just assigned a random lackey. Also Bobby Guarente is the literal twin of the second guy in the drawings. Definitely believe he did it.

Omg yesssss the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum!!! It’s one of my favorite museums and they still have the empty frames of the paintings on the wall, in the hope they will be returned. The most famous art heist ever. Also one of the lawyers in this trailer was also in the Operation Varsity Blues documentary 😂 He represented the Stanford sailing coach. Yes, I have eagle eyes and pretty sure the only one who caught this.
The most perplexing thing about this heist, is how a museum with artwork valued at $500+ million dollars, would put the responsibility of protecting it into a Grateful Dead stoner who liked to do acid. What's the worse that can happen?
