It's not like they could buy their way in but they could study their way in because they had enough money to just do that and strictly study. I say that because I had to work to help my family and still managed to get in one of the best universities of my country so it pisses me off to see these spoiled rich kids being lazy.
@tee vee Trump literally refused to release his grades and there were reports that this is how he got in. Cruz came from a wealthy Cuban family(and bought his way into Princeton). Tucker Carlson is heir to Swanson Foods with studio quality production equipment to broadcast his show from his MULTIPLE houses. Meanwhile TYT started from a basement and filmed their show on the host's ipad, and Stephen Colbert and Conan filmed on a potato quality camera. Even MSNBC's Racheal Madow did her few from-home shows on potato quality cameras. Fox News hosts and their filmed their shows from their homes while telling YOU plebs to risk your life. But sure democrats have "every advantage". The ONLY advantage Democrats have is more people support their arguments.

It’s infuriating.
What pissed me off is when rich people always cheat and get what they want. And people that are not rich, works their butt off to do all the work so that they can get into the school that they love and does not get in.

I just finished watching this documentary and i am absolutely speechless. I love the message at the end when they say your education is what you make of it. You can go to any school and have the best education. When I graduated high school I didn’t give a damn about Ivy League schools. People look at Ivy League schools like designer bags or the latest fashion. It’s asinine

@@Lazymath007_ I actually have no idea why they’re called Ivy League schools to be honest lol 😂 all I know is that they are super expensive and the acceptance rate to get in is so low and hard to get accepted there. I’m guessing because their so prestigious dates back years ago and has to do with the schools history and objective.
Candy The Ivy League is originally a sports league. All the Ivy League universities still participate in this sports league. It is not a high level sports league, actually. Of course their athletes are talented, but generally speaking if you want to be recruited for the NBA or something you shouldn’t go there.
Why does it still matter? Because these universities are some of the oldest ones in the country with the most prestigious names. Of course, not all of the top universities are ivy league, such as MIT or Stanford (I’m sorry Americans, but I actually don’t consider SCU or others mentioned in the documentary ‘top universities’. They aren’t on a global level.).
Lastly, it is of course utter nonsense that it does not matter if you go to the ivy league or not. What they said in the documentary is a blatant lie. Of course it matters! All you have to do is look at the average salaries of all these people that graduate and how it differs from the worst universities! Does it guarantee success? No, but it sure as hell does help an awful lot.
As a former college athlete if you think this is bad you would be appalled at the strings these same major schools pull to get athletes accepted and kept eligible.
i mean if they prove their talent and the value to a school i don’t see the problem. it’s not like they did not work hard for their sport. a college’s image is not just based on academics, good teams are important also.
At leas they still had to work hard enough and have enough actual skill to get that spot
@Michelle Rodriquez colleges have to maintain their status and one of the ways is through sports. the colleges aren't accepting athletes and giving them scholarships for fun because they like to lose money. clearly they add value
I am not the least bit surprised. I remember at the university in my hometown there were football players on full scholarships. Plus, they were given a lot of perks. Many of them were given sports cars and "jobs"where they were responsible for turning on the automatic water sprinklers in the field.
@@sherrysicle I think the question you should ask is what business a school, a place to get an education ever started to care about sports and think that somehow it shows merit or value in that realm? Sports should be separate. It has nothing to do with learning math, language, biology etc.
It's about money. College sports teams make money. So of course they pull strings because colleges always want money. Smart students from poor families don't bring in the cash, but a poor football player who bumps up the team average can.
Education got corrupted a long time ago in various ways. Sports focus is one of many.
Don't get me wrong, sports has value, but not in the field of education.

I think this documentary said it best: the demand and pressure students feel to go to the "top" universities is ridiculous. A lot of hardworking students go to regular colleges/universities and they do just as well.

There were parents and university officials willfully engaging in fraud and other criminal behavior, and yet Olivia Jade's name is thrown around more often than any of the university officials involved, or any of the criminal parents besides Laughlin and Hoffman. You're all confusing pettiness for justice. Anybody that actually cares about reforming college admissions isn't focusing on one child.
There are plenty of other kids at USC who took another persons spot. At least Olivia Jade dropped out, how many are still sitting in another person's seat? Other unworthy kids are still going to get their prestigious education and degrees, the price their parents paid for them just turned out to be higher than expected.

Watching this brings back the anger I felt back in my uni days. I had sacrificed a lot and studied like crazy to get into a good university. I was assigned to do a team project with this girl and she wasn't pulling her weight at all. She was one of the most undriven and laziest human beings I have ever met in my life. After a while, I just got tired and asked her point blank why she chose to study something she didn't care for at all since the course was not cheap. She told me that she didn't take any loans and her family had paid everything upfront. She told me that she decided to study because she was bored. At that moment, I saw red. RED. I wanted to yell at her that she was taking up a space that could have gone to someone else who really needed and wanted it. Many of us put in everything we had and we invested everything for our degrees. Rich people like her would never ever understand this. It angers me every time I think about it. To this day, I think someone else should have been accepted and not her.
Rich people work hard in school too. Not to mention, many private schools can kick out kids who have bad grades and many rich parents send their kids there.

Exactly. And this is especially true in the business world. I've never seen someone's career progress impeded because they didn't go to a highly selective school. The name of the college you attended is just trivia to your boss, your colleagues, your customers, and your competitors.
This documentary made me so angry because these kids were attending these prestigious schools that made a dent in their lives but in the background, took an opportunity from someone which would've completely changed their lives. Rick helped over 700 kids? That's so many people whose futures were completely taken away from them...
School is the one place you can at least change your circumstances and even that's a sham.

Now within Berkeley your major matters too, for example, if you're in Berkeley Haas School of Business (one of America's top 10 undergraduate business programmes alongside Wharton), then yes it will SIGNIFICANTLY affect that ROI. Not only ROI, but you will never be able to enter the same circles and spaces that you would've been able to with a Berkeley Haas on your resume.
If you don't believe me just check average starting salaries for undergraduates at Cal Poly vs Berkeley. You'll get your answer.

Imagine all the kids who managed to graduate before the FEDS caught on to this scandal. "Advantage Absolutely " could've gone even further into the work force numerous Alumni happened to get hired at a certain company. Bosses and managers not knowing how to do anything. These very people are the ones to always say "If you work hard you can get to where you want in life." Yet, it's just not as fast as having deep pockets.

Ted Cruz wealthy parents from Cuba, Trump (which wasn't even an Ivy League school), Tucker Carlson Hair to Swanson foods. ALL of these elites went to fancy schools and either are or pretend to be stupid. Considering Cruz's Cancun stunt, he might not actually be pretending. Clearly this is how they got in and graduated.
Actually some of the kids are still enrolled. For instance Matteo Sloane whose dad was convicted for the scandal is still enrolled at USC and author Jane Buckingham's son is also still enrolled at the school he was accepted into. Although most of the ones who hadn't already graduated were expelled.

A year before the scandal broke, she went on her YT channel and bragged about wanting to come to college only to party & was cancelled by her fans. She apologised, went back to being a mega-successful Influencer & then her Mom & Dad's scandal broke and we find out she got into college because her parents paid for her to be a fake athlete. This is one of many scandals featuring Influencers who were awful people pretending to be something they are not, but Olivia Jade was the only one caught up in a federal crime.

Oh, it does not stop at the front door either. Over 30 years ago when I was in college, a professor came to me and asked if I would be willing to "tutor" some other students. I told him that I had to think about it because I was already taking a full course load and working at the university. A few days later I showed up at his office to say I would do it but he was not there and there were two other girls, sitting there writing papers. We started talking and I found out that the job was NOT tutoring, it was taking tests and doing the work for rich kids and athletes! The girls thought it was funny but I didn't wait for him to come back.
Poor kids on scholarships were being paid to do the work of dozens of students who were too stupid to even get into college...I was not going to be one of them, I might have been poor but I was never dishonest.
I am just suprised everyone here seem so suprise you can buy education in US. It was said at the very beggining of the documentary and during and at the end. This is not something new these loopholes were created by universities that build this system in US.

This also exposes how grades don't matter if you play a sport. That's bigger than the cheaters. Athletes get preferential treatment.
This has always confused me about American. Like what does a sport have to do with your academic education? In my country, you play sports in your free time, no one cares about it, least of all universities.

@@91clarie In the United States, the professional sports leagues such as the NBA, NFL, MLB, etc... draft their players from the universities so for the athletes, college is professional training. Millions is invested to get the best players, make money off them as students (they're essentially professionals who aren't paid a salary), sell the story their success as in getting to the league to get more student athletes and repeat the cycle. Some of these professional leagues even require the athletes to play a minimum tenure on a college team to be eligible for the draft. The universities and professional sports are very interconnected. The top universities, the ivy league is called such because that is the name of their football league.

The free Ivy League admission for kids with rich parents donation or alum must be eliminated. This priviledge then transfers to workforce and creates more inequality.

This documentary also confirms that Olivia was compliant. She asked her parents questions about what to say to her high school college counsellor. I think that’s a huge detail that’s being overlooked considering she’s denied involvement up to this and blamed all of it on her parents. She knew lol
I keep asking this over and over and over again: Why didn't the counselor question Mark Hauser about his co-conspiring with Rick Singer?
As for the complaint thing, even if she knew, she followed and listened to everything her parents told her to do. That's what minors do. She wasn't 21 yet, which is adult age. It's not like they told her to rob a bank or go and murder someone. Ergo, I don't think she or her older sister should be punished for something both parents made them do.
Imagine spending your whole life trying to get into a prestigious college just to get denied because some rich family got into the school using a side door.

Our daughter got admitted to Stanford in 2012, this pisses me off. I know how damn hard she worked to get herself considered for admission! To know that people got in this way is disgusting. Especially Stanford, their admissions process is very different from the Ivy League’s, it is much more difficult to get through.
Yes you have to pay 50 millions to get there by back door. I hate like you all act like the university is not to blame. BUT actually those universities made this system and created loopholes in it. This whole "money first" approach created all of this.
I am so happy that in EU we don’t have to go through all these to go to the university, neither graduate with massive debts! I hope after stories like this the system will change and everyone will have a chance to education!

Unfortunately if you have money it’s not hard to get off on this kinda stuff if you play your cards right! It’s not the first scandal nor the last and as long as the college and government are getting paid it’s not happening.

apply for early decision 1 in ur top choice college the result comes out before the regular decision deadline. that way you’ll still have a shot at other colleges
I’m a plain student, I don’t do any extracurriculars because we have 15 mandatory subjects and tons of homework and tests everyday (6/7 different subjects daily), I’m not talented in any sport, APs, honors, etc. are not available here. I’m pretty smart, but I don’t stand out and can’t “show off” because I’m an extreme introvert. I come from a normal middle class family, I didn’t have a rough childhood I could write about in the college essay, and I’m not even a spicy white European. Therefore, there’s just a 1% chance I would get into some good college/uni even though I have good grades (not even straight As, because I’m in a pretty hard private school and our tests are not multiple choice and I’m not a valedictorian - we don’t even have those). There’s also a different grading system in every school, and some schools are harder than other, so a B in my school could be an A in another school. Our unis are v bad (800-1000th in world ranking), but the admissions are based on an entrance exam, maturita grades and an interview, which is (in my opinion) more fair than the US admission system. The uni ist also v cheap, almost cost-free. I’d like to study @ Berkeley, UCLA, or UMich, but there’s no chance I’d get a scolarship, let alone get admitted, so I already gave up hope for studying in the US.
Depends where, lots of schools accept basic kids with good grades.

If you're wondering if this documentary has all the focus on both Hollywood starlets, it doesn't. They're only occasionally mentioned. Most of the focus is on Singer.
And honestly, I think both of them are very relieved that there isn't much focus on them in this Doc.
This is really so sad ! Students from other countries who work so hard and look forward to spending a fortune , sometimes end up disappointed with no call letters. The price one has to pay to get educated in prestigious universities of the United states !

In India, there's something called a MANAGEMENT QUOTA in all private colleges, where the college is allowed to set a small number of seats aside for this quota, and the college can offer it to people who can pay a certain amount for this seat.
Generally i think it comprises of about 10% of the total intake capacity of the college, and the rest 90% are filled by entrance exams and previous performance/grades/marks (i.e. on merit)
The government educational institutions don't do that and take admissions solely on merit. That's why the top colleges in the country are mostly all government institutes, be it the IITs, the IIMs, the AIIMS or the IISCs and other government colleges.

I must say that I really enjoyed the documentary, the performances were very well done, I only feel bad for John Vandermeer, he was dragged into all that scandal without knowing anything, meanwhile Stanford kept all the money.
It's so horrible that this happens. I feel bad for those that work their butts off just to get bumped by some rich snob that doesn't deserve it.
Great documentary! Definitely a must-see. I'm disappointed at how most of the ultra rich folks involved only got a slap on the wrist. They should've been locked up longer. All of them received very weak sentences, except for Singer.

The rich get the seat, the middleman gets the money and a student who truly deserves it will find another way to rise through the ranks and won't give a shit about this. This is too deep here.

This is just so normal In India in schools like med schools and engineering school and is called back door entries. Kids in india commit suicide when they can't get in and then there are rich people who get in without any hard work.

As the end says...you can still get in through the backdoor, horrific for students who work so hard & will never have the opportunity. In Ireland you can get an affordable, yet high level education without having to bribe your way in. I've a Diploma, BA, & am studying an MSC part time. I also don't have rich parents, got in on my own merits, paid my own way, have zero student loan debt & am now earning good money.
I got into USC the old fashioned way - I studied. I borrowed money and received some scholarships. These rich punks are so marginal, they have to CHEAT.
I had to pause at 15 second, I wanna see it and don't want to get into further of the video and so I fast forward to the end to see the date, and it's today, can't wait to see it!!

The question is what is going to be done to stop this system from operating the same way it has in the past, probably not much. While you’re angry at the families, the man behind it is still free and won’t be prosecuted until all the families are, which is going to take a while

Most people only go their for the name and have a lifelong brag of how they went to Stanford or Harvard. Especially the upper class or popular colleges where people are paying to go to, so their parents look good
It's the fact that an education is so important, and the system in terms of admissions is so broken that minorities get overlooked and don't have the same advantages these rich kids have to stand out. Having parents who can afford SAT prep, ACT prep, private tutors, opportunities for piano lessons or some other instrument, or get to play obscure sports no one has heard about, go to private schools, or play masculine aimed sports (the word "masculine" based on the fact that women in these sports still get underpaid) such as football or basketball, get to be taught by the best teachers and counselors, basic materials for school, being white for some of them, etc. etc. and etc., all of these things give them one more boost than the next kid.
People work so hard to get into these "exclusive" schools, and get rejected and don't make the 6-12% of those who get accepted. For anyone going to college one day, trust me when I say that you can get a good education from state schools and private schools and online schools that are just as amazing an Ivy.
Ivy's are like Prada or Gucci, you ain't buying because you like what it looks like and feels like, you're buying it for the brand, the "prestige", the bragging rights. If that's what you want your education to be, then might as well not get one at all.
Also, the SAT and ACT is the worst assesment created, because as any educator that has a passion of teaching knows, every student learns differently. With a variety of learning styles comes different assessments and exams, because each students retains and applies information differently. The ACT and SAT is so generalized for THOUSANDS of kids to take, each with their own unique style. It's so sad. It needs to be nationally banned for the sake of students mental health and education.
Finally, each and every single one of you will do amazing things no matter what path you choose to take. It's unfortunate the amount of pressure that is placed on students, and oh god, don't get me started on everything you have to pay AFTER you get in. Education should be free, and hopefully one day, maybe 50 years from now, it will be.
We are the future Gen Z and Millienals, and anyone else invested in how this all just sucks.

Everyone would use an advantage if they had one. Whether lower academics and your black, d1 athlete, large donation to the college, etc are all advantages over a qualifying student. The only reason these colleges were pissed is that the money did not go into school pockets. Hypocrites these colleges.

Some people think that admission to UCLA or whatever is a meal ticket. Fact is, if you're not smart and ambitious, going to UCLA isn't going to make you successful. And if you are smart and ambitious, it doesn't matter in the long run if you didn't "get a spot" at UCLA.

Why am I not surprised. The day people get an education without handing over money to these colleges will put a smile on my face.
The college emphasises on extraordinary extra-curriculars but such types of extra-curriculars are only possible with ample amount of money. For example, a girl wanted a course in architecture in university of toronto and she applied for 100% scholarship. For that she built toilet in rural areas as a part of community services. Now judge yourself, is such type of community service act possible for middle class or people with income only to sustain themselves. If we are enrolled in the school, shouldn't there be more focus on grades and for extracurriculars the things which students are genuinely interested.what is the use of giving scholarship to the ones who are already wealthy. This just irritates me
