  • Throughout history, women have often faced significant challenges and obstacles, particularly in male-dominated fields such as art. Despite these difficulties, many female artists have created powerful and impactful works that reflect their experiences as women. These works not only showcase their artistic talents but also provide insights into the female experience, offering perspectives that have often been overlooked or marginalized. By exploring paintings done by women of women, we can gain a deeper understanding of the diverse and rich range of female experiences throughout history and across cultures, and begin to reshape the narrative.

    If you were born a woman, you see the female figure differently you understand your own body and what’s around it, and how it influences how others see you.
    In UA-cam, you can pretty much see this difference in the art community as well.
    Doesn’t matter if gay or straight, it’s spot on when the person painting or sculpting a woman isn’t one.

      Hahah in an artist and i use my own body as visual reference a-lot, since all i have to do is look down. I have a good understanding of muscles and fat distribution as a result, it is so useful and i feel proud i can use this knowledge to work backwards and represent others that don’t look like me

    Hanna Paulis portrait of Venny Soldan-Brofeldt from 1887 is my favorite woman painting women. It was very controversial during its time since Hanna didn't pant her friend idealised, but as she saw her, her tired artist friend sitting tired on the floor. It's such a beautiful portrait

    The fact that "propped" by Jenny Saville was out shown by a man (supposedly anyway) honestly just spits in its face. If "love in the bin" is a critique of the selling of art then he's basically saying that such an achievement for her and all women is worthless.

    I have a question, often I've been under the impression that (in certain periods) the main form of education a woman could get for some time was art lessons (amongst sewing and embroidery) so if that's the case why were women so unrecognised in the field or disrespected by men?
    I mean I assume it's just classic misogyny but still, it's confusing.

    • @jmhatyoutube6283

      It’s my impression that young women were once taught watercolor painting in much the same way as they were taught embroidery or playing the piano. It was part and parcel of being a lady. You painted little pictures of the flowers in your garden, or scenes from a trip in a journal, or you entertained guests with a passable turn at the piano. You were NOT expected to do any of these things professionally, indeed, doing any of them professionally was out of the question.

      I think you can see examples of this exact sexist nonsense in other fields. Cooking is women's work, but professional chefs were mostly men. Sewing was women's work, but the "best" designers were men. Women learned piano but composers were often men. Historically, women have just not been taken seriously in most professional fields, even in the fields that are supposed to be "ours"

      It wasn't uncommon for women to understudy to influential male artists, often in exchange for modeling. Of course, because the women were being objectified as models they were considered more useful as props by their male peers and shuttered out of the world of gallery exhibitions. Elizabeth Siddall is a great example as well of how male artists abused their models. Elizabeth wished to study to become an artist herself and was told to model in exchange. She famously modeled for the painting Ophelia by John Everett Millias, and it nearly killed her. She wasn't able to persue much of a career after that.

      It was seen as more of a hobby then professional. I guess people simply tolerated women doing certain hobbies as long as they were not considered "professional". Actually, this mirrors chefs. More women cook then men, generally, due to old held ideas that women stay in the kitchen. However, despite this most "professional" chefs are men.

    I've been painting women as beautiful se×ual creatures since I was a child. I'm lucky to have grown up to kind of look like my own art. I don't think there is anything wrong with artists or women embracing se×uality and even allowing it to empower them. Does not mean you have to actually go out and use your body to do the actual act. I'm a dedicated wife but I do have this secret side to my personality and it comes out through my art. That's how I express it and how beautiful I think the female figure is in general.

    • @SylvesterLazarus
      @SylvesterLazarus 11 днів тому +63

      Do you think that was a genuine expression or feeling the need to fit in with the others, or feeling that to be natural because of art history's obsession with the subject?
      Just because your classmates were rolling with it and didn't express distress there's a high chance it was something that actively bothered them, which sounds like something you might not take into consideration.
      I'm asking as a non-binary person who is interested in (and made pieces with) explicit depictions, but much more deeply admires things like non-sexualized nudity and more realistic depictions of people.

    • @nsjs17
      @nsjs17 10 днів тому +5

      Not a single one in multiple classes, huh? Your language is very telling. You're attempting to excuse sexualization by pretending all the women you saw in your classes were participating and ok with it. Doubtful. I'd bet quite a bit that your bias drew your attention to those paintings especially, making you think there was an overabundance. Not to mention, your use of female as a noun rather than adj. tells me you likely overly sexualize women by default, likely are (pcorn)sick, and thus not paying attention to reality and instead ascribing your own perversions onto women and their intentions.
