    Direct quote from TNO "If there is anything I have learned in my travels across the Planes, it is that many things may change the nature of a man. Whether regret, or love, or revenge or fear - whatever you believe can change the nature of a man, can. I’ve seen belief move cities, make men stave off death, and turn an evil hag's heart half-circle. This entire Fortress has been constructed from belief. Belief damned a woman, whose heart clung to the hope that another loved her when he did not.

    What stuck me most, is that actual ending is sculped right at the start, and final battle takes place at the begining. You are being foretold by your deceased love about everything, you only have to choose means on how to get there. Flashback story, sense of inevitable end and amazing art that holds against curse of time are traits of this masterpiece. Play it if you didn't, and prepare to be amazed.

    This part of the story springs from one of the three cornerstone principles of the Planescape setting: the Unity of Rings. It states that everything has a tendency to come back to its starting point, both physically and metaphorically. The other two principles are the Rule-Of-Three, which is discussed briefly in-game and which is exactly what it sounds like, and the Center of All, which argues that for any subject, the multiverse centers on *them*. The last one isn't really played up in-game.

    I think he has already accepted everything that he is and has done. Two things remain, then: reparations and, eventually, self forgiveness. Because he's going to need the latter if he intends to fulfill the former correctly, because he'll need to work from places OTHER than the Gray Wastes to do that. All the same, a few millennia in hell might still provide some much needed voluntary soul cleansing first. Hm... but he did say that time works differently in hell, so maybe he'll get to meet his companions in the meanwhile. Well, the ones who would both still be alive, or "alive", and WANT to make the trip for him anyway.
    Considering what the Wastes of Hades do to people, especially long-term visitors who came alone, he's going to need them.

The issues with your companions were resolved and there was a great sense of closure at the end. You got everything you deserved to get, considering how you played. ME3's ending was a mess and utterly unsatisfactory. And too bad, because the game up until then was quite nice.

    Planescape Torment doesn't inevitably end in the protagonist's death.
    Mass Effect 3's ending only compares to that of Planescape Torment in that they both had a golden opportunity to argue with the antagonist. Unfortunately, Casey and Mac squandered that opportunity in favor of pseudo-artistic nonsense.

It's probably meant to be stoic and meditatie and all that good karmic stuff, but it comes off as if he's thinking, "I'd rather be doing a thousand other things right now." Yeah, this is one of the plot holes of the game. It seems the Nameless One's immortality curse has finally "stabilized" or something, finally working the way it was supposed to. This issue even comes up in the final conversation with the Transcendent One (aka the NO's mortality).

    • @CloudOfJudgement
      @CloudOfJudgement 9 років тому +2

      +CountBifford It has only "stabilized" briefly. It's mentioned several times throughout the game that he could lose his memories at any moment if he dies too often.
      This doesn't happen, for gameplay reasons, I'd assume.

    • @Lurdiak
      @Lurdiak 8 років тому +1

      The deaths that steal his memory are the ones caused by the shadows.

    • @CountBifford
      @CountBifford 8 років тому +4

      Lurdiak The shadows are people who died in his place to fuel his resurrections. The NO encounters these shadows in the final level, and if they kill him there he doesn't lose his memory.

    • @YunoCake
      @YunoCake 7 років тому +4

      I came to think that the "Justice" is a product of his mind. The game explains many time that simply believing in something can make it exist. Which could explains why "Justice lends him strength" when facing a stronger injustice. Which could also explain why Vhailor was an exceptional Mercykiller, because he believed more than anyone.

    It's funny how people say that ME3 made no sense, considering that many people, including myself, predicted great chunks of it as early as when ME1 came out. It wasn't a huge twist at all, and fit perfectly with my expectations. The only thing that I was left missing was a couple of sadistic choices.
    People who insist on lack of internal consistency never got the Mass Effect franchise in the first place.

    The ending had to go through quick revision, which is why it was originally published in a clearly unfinished state, but it was for the better by a long shot. The stupidity that was the "Dark Energy"-ending was thankfully wiped out like it never existed, as it would have destroyed the franchise for all time (Mass Effect without mass effect? Yeah.).
    The actual ending fortunately fixed the matter, and contains a promise of future games to come.

    The endings would have been connected with the alignment system and would each present a different ending to the question (which else? :D) "What can change the nature of a man?". In the EVIL ending (this one) its - nothing, that's why TNO is send in the Blood War - if nothing can change the nature of a man - the evils he has done - he cant achieve redemption. The NEUTRAL ending would have left him in the Blood War again, while in the GOOD he would have achieved the True Death.

    I agree. ME3 was like a Hollywood movie. The ending felt rushed and extremely confusing to a majority of fans. Planescape is the kind of game you can tell had shitloads of effort put into making it. The ME3 ending felt too rushed to make any sense. PST might not have a very info-filled epilogue(what happens after TNO leaves the fortress), but it leaves you with a lot of possible guesses; guesses that aren't hard to fathom with all the back story provided. ME3 ending explanation made no sense.

    well, how can you be sure he would be in baator? A man such as him, having experienced all paths of alignment would likely not lean toward chaotic evil or lawful evil forces in the war, more likely he is to forge his own path, its hard to tell how he will proceed but no matter what he does he is far greater than all of the powers and even lady of pain herself....god i wish there was some way to find out :(

  • @Lightice1

    You are exaggerating the situation badly. Consider the fact that many professional writers have ended up changing the endings of their books in the last minute because they didn't like the original product. Believe it or not, a new ending can be made to fit with the stuff that was written earlier, and sometimes ultimately fits better than the original attempt.
    The ending was made to fit with the information we were given in the earlier installments, not vice versa.
