I’m a bodybuilder who literally ate meat 6 times a day. One time I decided to do a week water fast and ate only fruit & vegetables for a week prior.
During that period I had time to reflect on my health and the environment. Then something clicked in my head, and I decided I didn’t want to eat animals anymore.
Been a full-blown vegan for 6 months now and are very happy.

@Jonne Soimula Are you asking if it's harder to get an erection with a WFPB diet? If so, then definitely not. Not typically a subject that is deemed appropriate but as far as I know, the answer is essentially that erectile dysfunction is strongly linked to health of your blood vessels which a WFPB actively improves. I can link a few studies if you want.

I'm not a body builder (far from it T-T), but just going to the grocery after going vegan is a wake-up call. We can literally be surrounded on all sides by walls of meat at the store. I never really paid attention before. It was actually very horrifying when you realize the industry behind it. All these pretty packages, mostly completely covering the dead flesh inside, pretending to be something less than torture meat. Big giant signs in pretty fonts and little happy animal designs. Literally a horror show.

Where did you find recipes for pre work out and post workout meals?
I want to be able to go to the gym and have the right meals before and after but that's the hardest part of figuring out what to eat :/

    • @SodaiGoku
      @SodaiGoku 4 роки тому +23

@Bellasaurus Rawr I’m an experienced bodybuilder that has meal prepped for the last 10 years. It has always slightly changed over the years as my body, knowledge, food preference, and goals have changed. But now that I’ve switched to being a vegan, it’s not really that different, other than no meat or eggs or any animal product.
But there’s always one thing that’s stayed the same... the bulking, cutting, and/or maintaining goal system.
I think with maintaining, it’s fine to eat 4 meals a day (I do 2 prior, 2 post workout). But when it comes to bulking, you need one or two more meals. Each meal size should get you 3/4 full. While cutting, you can either drop a meal, down to 3, or reduce your carbs by around half. Another good tip; I always have higher carb meals the night before a workout, and breakfast and lunch before the workout. And the night before a day I have off from the gym, I’ll reduce my carbs, as well as sometimes drop breakfast on my days off.
Breakfast: Every breakfast I have (only on training days) Oats with berries and a banana, and crushed walnuts or almonds, with cinnamon or cacao powder. When cutting, I drop the banana and slightly reduce the oats. Instead of cows milk, I substitute it with Coconut Milk (I mix a can of coconut cream with a litre of warm water. I find it creamier, tastier, and cheaper this way).
Lunch: Either leftover dinner or quinoa-rice/sweet potato with steamed carrot, broccoli, spinach, kale, peas, or other greens, with one of 3 legumes; beans, lintels, or chickpeas. I like to have it with a sugar free hot-sauce! Some days I’ll fry with coconut oil, other days I’ll steam everything.
Post Workout: I’ll have fruit. Either watermelon, apple, pear, whatever you like really. I’ll eat myself 3/4 full on fruit. Rather than bananas, focus on something more hydrating. After my last training day workout, I’ll have a green smoothie afterwards instead of fruit, with Water, Cucumber, Celery, Spinach, Kale, etc. (I no longer take any protein powders or supplements, just get my protein from the legumes and vegetables).
Dinner: I’ll have a meal with the wife, and she usually picks. Anything that would normally be animal meat is just substituted with either vegan meat, tofu, or legumes. I’m a bit more flexible with dinners, and will even have a bit of feta cheese or goats cheese once or twice a week, for the b12 (Pesto and Goats Cheese Risotto is my absolute favourite meal the night before leg training the next day! 😉).
I tend to have salads more on my days off and when cutting (a sugar-free vinaigrette lively’s it up).
My final advice would be: Try to cook enough for two or three meals worth, and during training, drink 1/2 coconut water mixed with regular water before, during, and after your workout. The electrolytes help keep you hydrated and maintaining a good pump.
That’s basically it for me. Hope I gave you some ideas. Trick is to be consistent. Eat consistent, Train consistent (and well), and sleep consistent. Avoid eating at night (it just makes you fat and messes up your digestion), never skip leg day (because your gains start with you legs) and have at least one lazy rest day a week.

We know this because cholesterol metabolism is absolutely essential for human health and optimal functioning. In terms of the claims of lipo-protein carriers causing heart disease its also unfounded and supported by weak associative data with no under pinned biological mechanisms. Especially when lipo-proteins(LDL) exist specifically to ferry nutrients throughout the body, and their inhibition by statin medication physiologically degenerates people... Meta-analysis of statin clinical data shows there's no benefit to toying with cholesterol levels, why?
Because the liver controls the levels of lipo-proteins in your blood... it does this because that's its job, to regulate your energy system based on your physical need... Statins are also used to mimic a genetic disorder in humans called Mevalonate Kinase Deficiency(MKD), so as to study its disease pathophysiology...

And all the omnivores ate at least as much of the vegan meal as of the non-vegan meal.

    Awesome video.
I have been vegan for 11 months and counting. I went vegan mainly for animal and environmental reasons, then health came later. I have always been a tall skinny guy and never really had my weight mentioned by others until I went vegan. Now all I seem to hear is, "oh you aren't getting enough nutrition" or, "you've lost so much weight since you went vegan".
The truth is I actually weigh more now than when I ate meat! It's true what you say, as soon as people find out you're a vegan they suddenly act as if they are a qualified nutritionist.
So now I've started calisthenics, mainly to become the best I can be but, to also prove to everyone that I can be a healthy and strong vegan and hopefully change their perception of a vegan. I have gained 2.6kg in two weeks which I think is really good.
    My question is:
What are the top foods you'd recommend for calisthenics training and why?
I have just subscribed and I look forward to future videos.
    Thanks,
    Matt.

Hey Matt. Yes, you are totally right. Any health concern you have from now on, will be viewed as being caused by your vegan diet. Even just being lean like you mentioned, people aren't used to seeing people lean, so you must be protein deprived.
2.6 kg in two weeks is incredible. What top foods would YOU recommend? Haha.
I would say sweet potatoes (the orange ones) and bananas are tops for me. They are super nutritious, a good source of b vitamins and vitamin c. Lots of minerals, especially potassium. High in antioxidants, easy to eat, delicious, full of healthy carbohydrates. I also like lentils and beans. High in protein, fibre, iron, folate. Super good for keeping you satiated. Can't leave out flax seeds. Sky high in omega 3s, lignans, which are super powerful. They help detox our bodies, balance hormones, more fibre, antioxidant. Turmeric and black pepper are amazing for recovery. Super great at reducing inflammation all over the body. I could go on all day. Brazil nuts, great source of selenium which helps us build testosterone... Those are some of my favourites.
Thanks for the sub Matt, I will hopefully have time to make more videos soon.

So glad to have found your channel! Your lean, muscular physique totally debunks the myth that vegans do not get enough protein. Can't wait to share this video with my family and friends. I lost 50 pounds after following Dr. McDougall's plant based starch based diet. My cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar all returned to normal levels. I have never felt better in my adult life at the age of 58! I sleep better, have more energy and enjoy what I eat having a clear conscious that no animals were harmed. Looking forward to more of your videos!

I've been working as Vet Tech for years. I love my job. I love being the person that gets to help keep animals healthy and happy but I was still eating meat. Never really thought twice about it. It wasn't until a few months ago that I saw a video that flipped a switch in me and opened my eyes. The stuff I saw... it hurt. Deeply. Here I was helping these animals we have as pets but eating the ones that I know I'd love and never want to harm... wtf?? Why? Why had I never thought about that before? I instantly felt so guilty and angry at myself. I am an animal nurse. I love the ones no one wants to love, save the sick and dying and help ease their pain when no amount of medicine can help anymore. I'm there..... To help them go in peace and give them their last moments of love if an owner chooses not to be there with them..... This is what I do. Sometimes it's not easy but its my job, my life, my purpose. After watching that video I felt like the biggest hypocrite. From that moment on I've change my outlook on alot in life. I feel more compassion for everything and everyone like I've never felt before. I've given up meat for a couple of months now. Still very new and sometimes not sure I'm doing things right but I do feel better not just about not eating meat but just in general. I'm happier. Thank you for all your posts. I'm learning more and more of what I should be fueling my body with so a big THANK YOU to you!

Kudos for answering the call of your soul to do things from another more loving perspective. Contrary to currently held beliefs
We live on planet that had infinite intelligence and every other form of life is also governed by their infinite intelligence.
Not quite sure based on what and when homeo sapiens decided they were "King Pin and could eat everything including other intelligent life forms. Yet sadly they do and justify their self righteousness on account of not knowing the animals personally thus they don't matter....
Fortunately, that change old Sam Cooke sang about is well and truly here - in Canada alone 64,000 people stopped eating meat...!
It's not a trend it's a tangible sign of our collective and individual conscience finally hearing the "wake-up call...🤗😎🌎💜🙏🏾

You be like wow I didn't know I could cook without animal ingredients and still taste amazing 😄. Then it becomes habitual after that to try more vegan recipes then you start inventing your own lol.
Other great vegan cookbooks that OMW so delish are: "O she Glows" and "Veganomica" those ones I started with and soon became my go to addiction lol simply because it surprised, amazed and motivated many of my carnist aquaintances (not sure if I'm spelling that right lol) The recipes look so amazing so tasty and so freakn delish 😋 you will love those cookbooks. 😊

My partner and I started this way of life because of health reasons, then we were even more encouraged by the impact we make, as small as it may seem, to the environment and animal rights. Anyway, learning to cook and prepare your meals is something I was reluctant to do because of laziness or working too much, etc. Derek himself talked about this in his videos. BUT I tell you, it gets easier. I'm subscribed to so many wonderful nutritionists and cooks including Derek and Young Man Cooking (check just one if his videos and you'll get hooked) among others that later you start creating your own version of cooking. Id argue there's a fourth reason, alothough it's kind of intwined with the caring for animals branch: ethics. It's possible not have much care or compassion towards animals yet seen an ethical conclusion. That there's no reason it's okay to kill animals but still have an objection to things like murder against humans. I found I didn't have a reason I objected to one but not the other so I stopped eating meat

Silvio M. It's only easy if you a true vegan not just plant based. Because many that stopped eating the animals and their secretion only did it as a diet thing or as a fab or as an ego thing and think that makes them vegan... well it doesn't, because many of them could care less about the animals as it's just a food thing for them for their health, ego and or fab NOT about the animals and so it's easy for many of them to go back to eating the animals and their secretion. And so people that stopped eating the animals and their secretion for their health and or ego or as a fab are called plant-based dieters NOT vegan.
It's why the word vegan was invented... to separate those that stopped eating the animals and their secretion for their health and or their ego (and for other reasons other than for the animals) from the people that stopped eating the animals and their secretion because they do not want to contribute to animal cruelty. Veganism is NOT A DIET, IS NOT A HEALTH FAB , it's an act of kindness towards the animals, a compassionate move and an adopted lifestyle to help save animals from all sorts of cruelty and abuse.
A true vegan don't EVER go back to eating the animals and it's very easy for them not to go back that's because a true vegan ofcourse stopped eating food of animal cruelty for the animals sake, living up to the word vegan.
You see... vegan means to abstain and or restrain oneself from anything and everything that contributes to animal cruelty in any way shape or form.
And so, many people that stopped eating the animals and their secretion for health and or environment, ego, etc are not really vegan they are just plant-based dieters because they STILL contribute to animal cruelty in many other ways such as smoking, drinking certain alcohol and or beer, riding horses or ok with it, taking photos with wild animals at fairs or think it's ok, visits zoos, circus, aquariums and or think it's ok, buy products besides food products that were tested on animals or have animal ingredients in them. Wear clothing that is from animals like wool coats gloves hat's scarfs, feather stuffed coats pillows quilts, leather/suede shoes boots belts wallets and bags and so on and so on. And since they really stopped eating the animals only for their health and or ego not really for the sake of the animals for so many of them when the animal craving comes back to them strongly it's hard for them to resist and many have gone back to eating the animals.
It's important to classify yourself as plant-based dieter and not vegan if you stopped eating the animals and their secretion for your health and or ego and or for the environment because so many of those people do not live up to the meaning of vegan and or has gone back to eating the animals and their secretion making us true vegans look bad when they falsely called themselves vegan.

I am a 63 year old physician and completely agree with this video, excellent presentation. With regard to the leather since we slaughter approximately 7500 cattle every day in this country I don't see any reason why people should not use some of those hides for useful articles. They are certainly more environmentally friendly than plastic Crocs that are made out of petroleum and last ten thousand years in the landfill. Just one other way of looking at it. Good video.

I've been transitioning to veganism for a while. I don't love animals, I respect them, as much as I do respect the environment too and how much I love my personal health as well. What I find frustrating is regular vegans taking animals suffering on their own skins and wanting to pass it to others who don't even understand the concept yet forgetting about the environment or even to leave a healthier planet to our new generations. It's like vegans I met before only care about other species and forget about their own. I came from a place where nobody cares about animals more than they care about people, they should care about animals too but how to change the mind of ten millions? And that place is not the only one. I liked how objective you are, 3 main reasons for veganism and you didn't place one above the other, I felt the respect we all should have, and I feel that's the approach veganism needs. Thank you, you earned a loyal subscriber with one video only.

Totally agree. I think sometimes the most radicals of vegans make other repel the concept.
What they try to do is to show the hard reality of the meat industry, but in doing so, they just scare people always instead of getting the message across.
I think we need to be better at getting that message across and this video does that.

I had a greater understanding of animals when i went through a life threatening experience, i could see the same terror in thier eyes as i had seen in mine , i relized they feel similar emotions to us. All the best. Its amazing experience to share a bond with an animal it just touches your heart.

I takes a while for the stomach flora to adjust to the new vegan diet. You may find yourself "loose" on the toilet at first. But after a few weeks the right kind of bugs multiply in your digestion system and the meat digesting bugs die off. Then things return to normal.
You will find that acid indigestion diminishes on a vegan diet. Meat causes excess acid in the stomach.
You will experience diminished mood swings and enjoy a more stable outlook on life. Veganism really is a lovely experience and the best way to enjoy life. Vegetarianism does not give the same benefits as Veganism.

I’m encouraged by the popularity plant based food is getting. Let’s all keep spreading the word!

Brey Sanchez .... If you went vegan supposedly for your health then it's not vegan it's plant-based dieting. Those are the people that go back to eating the animals and or their secretion (dairy) again.
No true vegan do not EVER go back to eating the animals and or their secretion because the animals the reason why they went vegan.
The word vegan was coined in the 1st place to separate the ones that went meat free and or dairy free for their health from the ones that stop eating animals and their secretion to help save animals from abuse and murder and to not be contributers of such.

    • @miriamschiro1773
      @miriamschiro1773 6 років тому

MorginFremun ...O... so you are really a plant-based dieter/environmentalist for the environment. As cowspiracy is an environmental movie it inspires people that cares about the environment to go plant-based. Vegan is when you stop eating the animals and their secretion to help end their suffering... So to not be contributers to animal cruelty.

I've been 100% vegan for a little over a month now and it's actually amazing what small changes you see in your body. Yes, as a vegan you typically have to eat more (Especially considering I am a weight lifter as well) but I've never felt bloated or overly full from a meal. I've also started to see improvements in my skin, less bloating, less inflammation and overall more energy when I'm working out as well. The substitutes for meat (depending on the brand) taste really good and he's right, if you eat enough calories in a vegan based diet and you're eating the right foods, you should be getting the protein you need. Plus there are vegan proteins out there that work well. I encourage anyone who is interested to give it a try.

Beautiful video here. It was me watching "What the Health" 5 weeks ago that turned my light on. I made a decision to vegan at the end of the video and am now 5 weeks in. It was an amazingly quick transition. Like you say in your video there has been a transitional period of figuring out that I'm eating less calories, but they are nutritionally more dense. I used to eat a low carb diet which worked well for me. Meat was great because it was filling and had lots of protein so I could slam something meaty or cheesy and get all my calories and minimal carbs. I was worried at first about eating too many carbs. Now I'd say I do eat more carbs but less calories and I have lost some weight which is good. I'm really getting ripped now honestly and am not feeling like I'm missing anything. I'm spending alot more time thinking about food (mindfulness) and bought a blender and now a food processor. Those are two great tools for eating healthy. I've always had pretty healthy habits, like exercise and meditation but now with this diet I think the sky is the limit. And I've always been a HUGE animal lover and it makes my heart feel good knowing I'm not contributing to animal agriculture any more. Peace, health and happiness to all who come along this path!

I plan to finish eating everything that I have, it will only be once a week, I just don't like wasting food. I also have had problems with B12 deficiency and I want to make sure I get some naturally before going to the vitamins. Right now I am just focused on actually preparing good food, finding recipes I like and know I can prepare, without worrying about supplements.
Thanks for being open with your journey, I think the more people who are open about their non vegan slips or reasoning behind an old belt or shoes, the more open other people will be to explore the idea. Being strict on other people does not open their hearts or minds.

Hey Derek - thank you very much for the reply... Im doing fine so far - I have been diagnosed with Adrenal fatigue, low testosterone, and I get VERY BAD migraines 1-2 times every month - sometimes they last for days...... it is real I am literally exhausted everyday.. Im being patient and taking it slow...I am also reading Rich Roll's book Finding Ultra - very inspiring...I love juicing!

Thanks for the update. Our bodies want to heal, give it the right fuel and it will. You are doing great, keep up the juicing and researching. Do they have you on anything for the adrenals? I know there are some great formulas out there usually containing rhodiola, ashwaghanda and often sumac root. All this work will be worth it in the end! All the best.

As you said it''s all about choice. I hate militancy in any form, whether it be religious, political, sexual, gender-based or lifestyle. It is all about quietly setting an example. I have learned from you - Namaste.

I am slowly transitioning and it's already been challenging. I tried going cold turkey but found out quickly that I didn't have the culinary skills to sustain a plant based diet after almost 50 years of eating meat. I am at about 95% plant based and I have people questioning me constantly. It's a pain in the ass to explain to someone that's it's a personal choice so mind their own business. When I do come across other vegans some criticize the pound of meat I eat a week. I used to eat probably 10+ pounds per week. Anyway it's good to see someone with an open mind and supports the route I am taking. I hope to find some additional easy meals to prepare to help me transition through my final phase.

Some people have success going cold turkey (I did) others don't. Some vegans can be harsh because they're so passionate and unfortunately that discourages many people aspiring to be vegan. It seems like you're persevering though.
Meal prep is the most helpful thing you can do. Having a bunch of fresh greens on hand at all times as well as chopped up veggies and several dressings you enjoy makes it easy to throw together quick, delicious salads.
A well-stocked pantry including good quality spices also helps of course.
It gets easier and easier the longer you do it.

It's not just a nutritious diet, it's an ethical choice. You don't have to be a vegan extremist doing activism against meaties and the meat industry, the saying goes just eat your broccoli and be sad, just, and make it a rule, be a gluten-free vegan, and if not, choose whatever's right for you (I know what this is like because years ago I experimented with what made me a fussy eater, I even tried vegan and gluten-free, so be a gluten-free vegan).

Day 23 for me after reading The China Study. Very great and informative book that examines the link between the consumption of animal products (including dairy) and chronic illnesses such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and bowel cancer. I would have never imagined myself becoming vegan, it literally happened overnight. Already lost 15 pounds (currently weigh 220, before I was 235 ) I now have a healthy relationship with food and couldn't see myself going back to my old crummy destructive habits. Thanks for your content It's been making this transition a hell of alot more fun !

I'm going into day 4. Today was valentines day, and I received a box of chocolate. I didn't open it, and I have the box on my desk to remind me that I don't want to go back to my past. I am on a weight loss journey, but I fell in love with the idea of getting healthier and happier with a side effect of losing weight. So my mindset completely shifted from weight loss to try and get healthy, and in return, weight loss will happen. I started cold turkey after watching one of those documentaries that show you the sick treatment of animals. My starting weight was 226.8 Ib, and I'm currently 221.2 Ib. I believe I am just losing water weight right now, and I'm excited and motivated to keep going. Day one was very hard, but after that, I feel like it has been getting more comfortable. As of now, I have been only raw vegan; however, tomorrow, I do plan on getting oats, lentils, beans, etc. My biggest struggle right now is liking vegetables lol. I love fruit. I could eat grapes, kiwi, and strawberries all day, but vegetables or a different story lol. Wish me luck. If anyone has questions or wants an update, go ahead and reply. I'll try and post if I get the notification.
