  • The Schnee Family Semblance of Glyphs is the most diverse semblance we have seen in the RWBY series, encompassing multiple abilities into one Semblance. So let's break down what each Glyph can do and how this semblance can be modified and changed through Dust Augmentation. Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

    A couple corrections:
    1) Weiss has summoned her Arma Gigas without using Myrtenaster. It is notable she hasn t used other Glyphs without her weapon.
    2) Weiss used Time Dilation a second time while fighting the White Fang Lieutenant at the end of Volume 2
3)Weiss used her glyphs with Wind dust in her fight with Flynt and Earth dust against Cordovin's Mech
Thank you to everyone who posted corrections in the comments! I try my best to include everything but I do miss things here and there. It's because of all of you that I will continue to learn more so I can bring you even better RWBY content! So thank you for offering corrections in a respectful manor 😊

Wiess' semblance seems like symbology or alchemy rather than magic. I think the basis of her semblance is using aura to manipulate, alter, enhance , and/or rearrange physical properties on a molecular level. The glyphs act as tangible 'pathways' and 'circuts' that allow a fine and precise manipulation of aura. In Volume 1 Phyrra explains to Jaune that anything a huntsman imbues their aura with can be used as a weapon. I think the Schnee Semblance is a very advanced version of aura projection that allows the user to use the world around them as a weapon.

The Snchee's glyphs are my favorite type of Semblance. Aside from elegant designs and aesthetic, it also posses different form of functions. Defense, Summoning familiars, Plataforming, Iceskating and Synergy with Dust.
*5:39* - However, I wanna correct that Weiss actually used Time Dilation *TWICE* both back on Volume 1 and Volume 2, during the chapter "No Brakes", against her fight against the White Fang brute with the chainsaw.
Another thing to point out that about Weiss's Glyphs is that she only uses her two fingers from her free hand.
Last edit. I would like to add that Winter also have her own style of using Glyphs. Back on her first debut on Volume 3, Winter seemed to use a similar speed-propultion-move during her fight against Qrow. Although she seems to relly more on her Summonings than using different varieties and her dual-wielding fighting style.

Weiss was captured by Raven, Vernal took her weapon and Weiss was still able to summon her Arma gigas and change it's size without Myrtenaster.
Sooo yes, she can use glyphs without use off her weapon :P.
Also yes, we have seen Weiss use other types off dust beside ice and fire :) example would be when she used Earth to block Cordoven's shot and wind to block agains Flynt's sound based attack.

Completely agree. I think the weapon is just for fusing dust to her glyphs to make it different eg. Ice, Fire, Electricity (time dilation rip) etc.
I think the basics she can do without the weapon such as push/pull and summon (not really basic).
Back in the character short, Weiss couldn't do anything to get out of her situation without her weapon, just pushing and pulling couldn't stop her from being pinned. She needed her summon (hasn't unlocked it yet) or other glyphs. If she could use other glyphs, that would have helped but she didn't (from no weapon to fuse the glyph with.)

Elise it might actually be a little bit more than that. Think about it in terms of Harry Potter, where their wands are a focal point for their magical powers. This could be the case for Weiss where, in high stress situations such as combat, it helps her focus her semblance to make the glyphs appear easier. That being said, unlike Harry Potter, Weiss doesn’t need Myrtenastsr in order to summon her glyphs, as she’s done so multiple times when not in nearly as stressful situations.

What if the Schnee liniage comes from one of the daughters of Salem and Ozma because they were shown possesing power. We don't see them getting killed. For me, in a narative, unless you see the body, or someone says they are dead I will assume at least one of them survived. And they probably had kids too so I think the Schnee bloodline might have a descendant from one of those children. BEcause the glyph semblance seems passed down from generation to generations, it's more of a magical summons and I think they tap into their aura for the summons but what they do after with them is more akin to magic and how it works. ANd I disagree about Weiss sumoning with only her weapon, it might help her focus and direct her Glyph but when she was imprisonned in the camp with Blake she had no weapons and she summoned her Knight... She made the Glyph appear.
But yeah... I suspect magic comes into play, the Schnee family does use magic but are limited through time time that passed and had other bloodlines mixed with them.
Another indication would be the hair, all of the Schnee descendant seem to possess white (or platinum) hair. That would be a really hard gene to keep and yet each generation seems to be born with it. I don't think it's coincidence.

I remember in the SMITE x RWBY skin showcase of the Weiss skin they mention that while working with Rooster Teeth they were very particular about getting the glyphs accurate. When it comes to the summons, what they can summon isn't just a tough fight they had, but rather an unforgettable experience that impacted who they are, which they draw from to make their summons.

I think we’ve already seen Jaune boosting Weiss’ aura and it’s impact on her summoning. This was in volume 5 after Cinder critically wounded her. After she had already been healed by Jaune boosting her aura, she produced a glyph in her palm and told him to “keep it up”. Shortly after that, Weiss summoned a Queen Lancer powerful enough to impale Hazel, who was outside the building, and yank him back into the building - a distance I’m guessing was at least 50 yards, but probably more. Not only that, but it was particularly durable, as it lasted longer than I’ve seen most summons last, even while sustaining damage. I’m guessing the reason why this Queen Lancer summon was particularly nasty was because it had been supercharged with Jaune’s aura.

  • @LumeanTV
    @LumeanTV 4 роки тому +8

So essentially, Weiss is a glass canon.
I've thought about this a bit lately, but I've wondered how semblances and auras work.
I've noted that certain people's auras seem stronger than others, like Blake and Watts, who've been shown to be physically a bit weaker than the rest of their counterparts. [I think.]
Out of team RWBY, Blake's has probably been the one we've seen flicker the most, despite being able to take a few hits. Watts' gets hit maybe once or twice and his was just shattered like a dropped mirror. As opposed to maybe someone like Yang, or Ruby, who we know to be probably the most physically strong in their team. Ruby, carrying a six-foot scythe All The Time, and Yang... Well. Being Yang.
Then there's Weiss, who seems to do well against grimm, but has had a hard time up until now against human opponents. I'd say she's the baby of the team, weaker even Blake in strength. But her Mental strength has to be doing numbers on everyone else's, even Blake's.
Not to mention, Semblances do form from someone's personality, right?
So this has made me wonder recently. Does how long someone can last in a fight depend on their strengths? Mental, and/or physical, as well as their personality? Is Weiss Able to do so much Because she's gone through so much, constantly evolving into better versions of herself through the series, while being able to take on other things, like her father, Whitley, her mother even at some point, training, the company? I'd say that'd qualify her as some sense of a multitasker. Maybe that's why she has no real issue handling everything she does at once. It also makes me wonder what her breaking point is. What her limit might be. If she's using a gravity glyph for lifting something heavy, does she struggle in lifting it if that thing is *too* heavy?
I'm rambling here, but this has made me think a lot and I've finally been able to form my thoughts properly! Thanks to your video.

5:43 Wait, wasn't Time Dilation also used against the WF lieutenant or was that gravity?
7:40 Ruby also used her semblance on Nora as far as I remember in V4..
But yes, the Schnee Semblance is pretty much op and with enough practice and time, Weiss (or any Schnee) could become like 1/2 Maiden 1/2 Normal Person (?). And also considering this, IF somehow Weiss gets the Winter Maiden Powers, she'd be unstoppable, literally untouchable even. Plus at some point the Relic of Creation, in her possession, could be used to give infinite amount of aura to someone.🤯🤯🤯😲

I always thought that her glyph turning red in Players and Pieces was the addition of red dust, because It seemed early in the white trailer that red dust had repelling capabilities, as we saw weiss blocking the arma gigas' sword when her myrtenaster turned red. And then in volume 1 we saw Weiss roll her revolving chamber before launching Ruby, I thought that meant she was switching to red dust

Red dust is fire. In the trailer I'm pretty sure what she did was use the fire as a sort of explosive shield, so she could nullify the impact of the arma-gigas' attack.

Someone already clarified the Glyph without Myrtanaster.
Mind you this has only been via the summoning Glyph and no other and even was a point of contention for Weiss in the fight with Flynt where she was helpless without her rapier and sacrificed herself. She did indeed also do it twice with the boarbatusk as well. Once at the party and during the reunion.
Time dilation meanwhile has been stated as the process of speeding up action. And it has been used twice. Weiss used it on herself on the train against Banesaw.
Winter has also summoned a pack of Beowolves and a Centinel.
Now I've seen the theory that the size of the summon can be made larger than they originally are based on the Alpha that Winter used being far larger than one we have ever seen but I think it's just she killed a much bigger one.
What I find interesting is how physically exhausting glyphs and summoning seem to be yet they tend to maintain a fair bit of aura. It seems to take more of a physical toll than an aura drain. But the defensive aura they have does not reflect the capacity. Meaning the aura used by the semblance itself is surprisingly low instead of meaning a massive aura capacity. Because they seem suffer breaks no different from anyone else. I'd argue Ruby has a stronger defensive aura than Weiss.
The source is obviously up for debate and could be magic related and I'd like it to be. But either way it is the most powerful and versatile semblance in the series by far.

So. It's stated that Semblances [the name implying it's a semblance of the power humanity used to hold] evolve over time. Since Glyphs is hereditary, it has existed for 3 generations, and thus evolved over generations.
Glyphs probably started as a summoning semblance, allowing Weis's grandfather to summon enemies he'd defeated for a few seconds.
Then his daughter was trained as a huntress and used wand techniques, and probably learned that she could combine Glyphs with dust the same way Blake does. Either her or Winter discovered that you could create a Glyph that could channel more dust than aura, and you'd just get an effect out of it.
Now we have Winter, Weis, and Whitley if he accepts the Schnee legacy as a Schnee rather than just his father's son. These three have boths summons that are powerful and last for ages, as well as advanced techniques in manifesting dust effects at the point of their glyph.
Over Weis's lifetime I can imagine Glyphs finding a new stage. Maybe it can end up imitating other semblances. Or maybe it will advance with the next generation (ignoring that all Schnee blood is in Atlas right now).
Either way humanity has a predilection towards magic. Having powerful Semblances of that magic like Raven's semblance, Overactive Imagination, Glyphs, and Petal Burst alongside things like Jhoan's level of aura and the presence of noticeably more powerful magical warriors says that humanity is becoming more powerful despite the absence of the gods.
Let's say that Salem were pushed back and her next plot took 1000 years to hatch. For one thing she would have to take out the Schnee family. If fhe Schnee line existed, in one name or another, for 1000 years Glyphs would be almost as powerful as the ancient magic, just more telegraphed. It would also be relatively widespread as cousins and siblings would disperse into the world.

I believe summoning comes from when a schnee wins a very memorable fight against a grimm. If you look at Weiss, her main summons are the arma gigus, a boarbatusk and a lancer. The fights that match this are the white trailer's fight, professor Port's class in volume one and the lancer fight in volume 5. In all three she showed defiance against her name and learned to distance herself from said name after the fight. The boarbatusk fight is a bit hard to realise but it is there. The fight taught her that her team is her family and that she can rely on them unlike her main family.

Slight correction: she also used the "Time" glyph against the White Fnag Lieutenant in No Brakes.
However, interesting thing there is that before that fight, she gave her dust cartridges to Blake to go fight Roman, meaning that for this fight she was seemingly dustless. So, either she secretly kept some Lightning Dust on her that we don't see OR this is actually a thing the Glyphs can do on their own, which would just add even more to this theoretically OP set of abilities.

I am still maintaining my theory that they glyphs are linked to Salem. The white hair as well. I think Nicolas Schnee found a little more than dust mines when he searched the world. Remember there seems to have been a quite a long time between the great war and attack on Beacon. Glynda said about the long period of peace the world had been experiencing and I wonder if that was Salem finding some measure of distraction with Nicolas and then when that fell apart she went back to her plans to destroy Ozpin.
Lets face it, glyphs are as close to magic as you can get and even Salem used glyphs to summon the Grimm arms to attack Hazel. I wonder if Nicolas taking ill and needing Jacque to take over was due to something Salem did to repay him for taking Willow away from her. I have said it many times since V6 but it would be awesome for a potential rift in team RWBY if it was discovered that Weiss was a grandchild of Salem, would Oz even take exception to this and not trust her anymore?

  • @leyrua
    @leyrua Рік тому +2

I doubt the writers put this much thought into it, but I think it would be fascinating if, rather than teleportation, the fundamental concept behind the glyphs was one of "structure".
She's not teleporting dust through the glyphs: the use of dust is giving her semblance the blueprints to restructure itself and copy the energy pattern created by the dust.
Creating her summons takes time because she has to _fully_ visualize every detail of the creature before her glyph can recreate its physical form.
She wasn't teleporting her summon through the glyphs: she had already fully visualized its "structure" in her mind, and was holding onto that image, so momentarily dropping its physical manifestation to remanifest it somewhere else was no problem. But this is an advanced technique because if her concentration waivers even slightly in that moment of transition, she has to resummon it from scratch.
It would also provide a neat explanation as to why they can only summon things that have challenged them: those kinds of fights leave a lasting impression, and the adrenaline burns the image of that enemy into their mind. They wouldn't be able to cheat this by handicapping themselves, because they have to genuinely fear for their life.

    • @leyrua
      @leyrua Рік тому +1

Time Dilation more than likely affects the target's perception of time rather than time itself. If Blake, for example, used it to "move super fast" in order to cut up the rockets shot by the Paladin, her perception of time would need to be altered too.
The faster you move, the faster your brain needs to process your surroundings to facilitate that. So I believe it alters perception and possibly physical ability, not time itself.
Edit: I think Myrtenaster is literally just a way for Weiss to manipulate dust and use her semblance at the same time. Though the idea of her sword being a "conduit" might imply that while she doesn't *need* her sword to use her semblance, it might make it easier to do so.
(We've seen Weiss use her glyphs without Myrtenaster at the party where she summoned the boarbatusk and after Raven captured her, she summoned the Arma Gigas.)
So it makes sense it might just be for dust manipulation. It seems Mytenaster "shoots" dust into her glyphs.

I wonder, We've seen Salem use magic to create Grimm arms to attach to Hazel. And we all know by now that semblances are a fraction of the magical powers that Humans used to have. What if these could be what the God of Lights Creations would look like as opposed to the Grimm? We all know he gave humanity Silver Eyes to combat Grimm why not give them their own Creatures to fight off against the monsters of the night. I think they could have been his solution to the Grimm overflowing the world. He couldn't get rid of them because that would mean war with his brother. So he creates an ability that can be passed down from bloodline letting all who come from it get this power and would eventually spread across the world letting them all defend for themselves.
But as I write this I can't help but feel that perhaps instead it was a result of a some of the God of Light's pool getting mixed into their bloodline as humanity rised from the ashes.

    I always figured:
-No Dust = Basic Glyph, simply a solid platform
    -Hard Light = Summoning Glyphs
-Gravity = Black Glyphs, can hold something in place or launch it forward
-Wind = Speed Glyphs, can speed up the user
-Lightning = Time Dilation Glyphs, allows the user to precieve time in slow motion, while still being able to move normally
-Ice & Fire = Ice & Fire Glyphs, obviously
Another theory I had was that all Glyphs are Summoning Glyphs, just being able to summon different things depending on how they were used. For instance, Weiss could summon ice in the shape of a fist (V3C1) or in the shape of her Knight's sword (V2C12), she could summon a gravitational pull (Or, I guess, anti-gravitational push?) with Gravity Dust, etc. Time Dilation doesn't really fit into that, though.

Weiss Used Time Dilation multiple times, including in the White trailer, during the train fight and against Flynt Coal. It seems to Speed up Her local time, making her move faster, but it Also results in Her Slowing down VERY much once the effect wears off and she "syncs" back to local time. You see this in her fight on the Train where she moves lightning fast while hitting the White Fang dude with the chainsaw, but then all of a sudden she slows down and is moving in slow motion. Slow enough for him to be able to grab her face. I think that's the downside of using that technique, it speeds her up for a while, but then it slows her down to re-sync with the surrounding time reference which leaves her Vulnerable for a period of time.

Well Phoenix, you asked for it. So here's an abridged version of my unified Dust theory, as applied to Weiss' glyphs.
First of all, her standard Glyph does not require Dust, nor does her Summon Glyph. As has been pointed out by others (such as commenter Melvin Dekkers below), she could use them when deprived of her sword, and is not known to have access to other forms of Dust at that time.
However, we have seen the same snowflake used in conjunction with ice (no visible change), fire (turns the glyph orange), gravity (turns the glyph purple/black), and hard light (no visible change). These are not "special" Glyphs, but her regular propulsion/motion-altering glyph being used to dispense Dust. When it dispenses Ice, it creates weapons made of ice. When it dispenses fire, it shoots fireballs. When it dispenses hard light, it fires beams she can curve and redirect to a limited extent. When it dispenses gravity, the regular abilities of the glyph are amplified.
Weiss can also shape these into some form of shield. Ice and Hard Light make a spherical barrier, Fire creates a broad sweep of flame to push back and harm enemies, and gravity simply used the normal glyph to block and trap weapons or entire combatants.
Then you have Time Dilation. Like Summoning, it visibly changes the appearance of the Glyph, confirming that these are special techniques and not just a regular Glyph with something added to it. Also, you misspoke when you said she's only demonstrated it once. She used Time Dilation on herself when fighting the White Fang Lieutenant on the train in Volume 2. (more to follow in self-reply comments)

    • @TheCrazydude17
      @TheCrazydude17 4 роки тому

Summoning appears to be some special technique used with the normal blue-white glyph, with or without some form of Dust like ice, wind, or hard light. Evidently a type that doesn't change color like Fire or Gravity. Time Dilation on the other hand requires Lightning Dust, a Dust type with proven video-game "Buff" effects. As seen with Nora and Hazel, and Harriet's Semblance may be related.
I neglected to mention wind/steam in my original comment, because of the controversy. Originally, green was Wind Dust, and Weiss used some kind of white or light blue Dust to create Steam. Her steam attack can be seen in the fight against Flynt, and Mercury's boots also appear to fire steam Dust. However, according to the Official Handbook, white dust is Wind and green is a yet unseen Plant type.
I speculate that dispensing Dust with the normal glyph would: produce one or more lightning bolts (Lightning dust), throw chunks of rock or make a rock barrier (Rock dust), produce magma (Combustion dust), or produce vines or tangling roots (Plant dust).
However, there is also the possibility that each kind of Dust has a special technique, like Lightning with Time Dilation. Since Summoning forms Aura substance from the glyph into a physical memory of a defeated enemy, and Time Dilation forms a lightning haste field around the target, I will speculate that each one uses the element to surround and enhance the target. These would likely be: Saiyan/Yang damage amp aura (Fire), armor/agility defense amp aura (Ice), flight/knockback motion aura (Wind), armament/armor equip aura (Combustion), Gaara deceptive armor aura (Rock), force shield/platform aura (Hard Light), and possibly life gain/regen aura (Plant).

Didn't she also use the time dilation on herself against that white fang guy in volume 2? Or was that just a speed increase?

So Weiss's time dilation ability doesn't seem to overpowered to me. It would seem that the dilation is limited to an individual, or possible a small group standing on the glyph. So that individual is proving time different to the rest of the world, but it comes at the cost that they are technically aging faster as well. In my eyes it would be akin to the scene in doctor strange when steven is first using the eye of agamoto on the apple, except in one direction, unlike strange Weiss would seem to be able to age the apple, but not restore it to youth. Now if the glyph could be inverted, essentially allowing the occupants to time travel forward in time, that could be over powered, or if the dilation could result in reversing of time. But as it sits its basically only good as a speed buff to anyone standing on the glyph, attempting to use it for more would result in the character aging into a skeleton.

Hard to say how Neo would fare. On the one hand, we've seen that she can run circles against several skilled opponents at once, assuming our protagonists have improved significantly up to V7, and hold her own against someone as skilled as Cinder sans the Maiden advantage, but on the other hand, we have no idea how she fares against Grimm in general, so it's possible the summons could pose a threat to her. My money's pretty even.

I run probably the largest RWBY roleplay guild online, and this is great content. Explaining glyphs take a lot more time than I have, so I am going to use your video from now on! If you ever want to probe someone's mind about the details of RWBY feel free to hmu!

Weiss also used time dilation on herself during her fight with the White Fang general with the chainsaw in volume 2 chapter 11. Also, Ruby has combined her semblance with Nora to take down the Gheist grimm in the volume 4 premiere.

I think she doesn’t use glyphs without her weapon because she only uses her glyphs while fighting and while fighting she always has her weapon. (Except for some moments but in those particular moments she’s usually on the ground and I’m not sure her regular glyphs would be much help from there)

Weiss uses the black Glyph in V1 to launch Ruby at the Nevermore, too.
My take is that White Glyph is more raw, Black Glyphs are more focussed and controlled. Less power, but much more precise control.

See, I saw something a little bit different in that example from Vol 1: to me it looked like she created two glyphs - a black one on top of a white one. To me it looked like she killed the black glyph when she launched Ruby. So maybe the black glyph is a “gravity” glyph whereas that particular white glyph is an “antigravity” glyph? The reason why I suggest this is think back to the fight between Watts and Ironwood. Anytime Ironwood was in a purple zone he had to deal with gravity, whereas when he was in a white zone he had to deal without it. Perhaps it’s related?

She's used wind dust to launch foes with her glyphs more than once.
