  • I went down to Goodwood on setup day in my Porsche 930S to check out the historic 911 race cars the Porsche Museum brought over for this year's Goodwood Members meeting. Here's a behind the scenes look at these iconic race cars.

The rear track of that RSR is insane, looks like it’s hauling a plough when you look at it from the front

I couldn't stop looking at that too. The wheel-arches are just cosmetic covers over externally mounted wheels!

You can keep your Ferraris and Mclarens etc but my dream car has always been the original 911 turbo or 930 as its often called i drove one to Cardiff from Sheffield in 1990 i cried my eyes out when i got in it because myself and my twin had a picture of a few 911,s on our bedroom wall and he'd passed away following a crash in his 205 GTi i realised then that i couldnt tell him about the adventure. Thanks for the uploads and sharing your passion Harry.

Those rear wheel arches on that RSR 911 are beyond radical - those crazy guys at Porsche really like to go hard. I think its first iteration was in the Can-Am Challenge Cup with a 5-litre flat 12 engine developing 850 HP, then a 5.4-litre engine developing 1500 HP.

I wonder what size the tyres are, and if any of the width is inside the original body line?

Great video, big thanks Harry! Great to see that you keep looking up things in historic books. We should do that more often. Paul Frere was the man i always read in our Belgian car magazine, De Autogids. A part of my childhood. He was such a passionate gentleman. He really gave me the Porsche bacteria. What a person he was. You made my day by mentioning his name and his book. Thx!

Wow! The sound of those turbo flat 6s at the end of the video, Harry...it takes me back to when I was sixteen in 1977 and I rode my bicycle in the rain from Dartford over to Brands Hatch to watch the World Championship of Makes Round. Jackie Ickx won in the Martini 935, with Manfred Shurti racing the Jagermeister sponsored orange example, in second place. I even took my Philips cassette recorder with the microphone to record those very engine sounds! The normally aspirated 3.0 RSRs absolutely wailed echoing off the trees out on the Grand Prix circuit!... thanks for re-kindling those memories, Harry!

When I was younger I used to look at Porsche's and think "boring, they all look the same" and I'd look at Lambo's and Ferrari's etc as superior. But now I'm a little more mature and these kind of cars are vaguely in my wheelhouse (a normal Porsche that is!), and you drive them...then you appreciate the engineering, the precision and kind of what the words "sports car" mean. I've seen these legendary cars up close and it's brilliant to hear Harry describe driving one, must be a dream come true.
A 911 is definitely next of my list of cars to own I think. Whether that's a classic or otherwise I'm not sure. But another great video thanks Harry. It truly shows the lengths Porsche go to to make a car perform to such a standard imo

You mentioned Nick Mayman in your recent Porsche video. I knew him in the early 80's, he was living in Llanbedr in North Wales. I rented garage space at his house for my Porsche 356. He was no longer practicing as an architect but restoring cars. You may not know but he was the person that rescued Jim Clark's 356 UUL442 from a local scrapyard. He was still restoring it when he sadly died from a brain tumour. He was an extraordinary and very eccentric character. Still missed by all his mates in the car world. Great videos, best regards David Edelstein.

As an aside, the red #5 935 in the video is near and dear to me. Last century, early eighties, this car was THE ticket in IMSA racing. The owner/driver Bob Akin a consummate gentleman, spent an inordinate amount of time explaining to my son about the car and let him sit in the drivers seat and go BAROOOOM! I hold grudges, I am still very jealous! Cheers.
