I saw John Cooper Clarke do this in the movie "Control", which is about Joy Division and Ian Curtis. I'm glad that he's still around. He hasn't changed a bit.
EPIC, never gets old... i can watch this over and over... i recited it a couple of years ago in a bar on cusco... it was decent, hardly as good as john though
@Jeff Baker It sure is effective, however, my number one defense is my moat stocked with crocodiles. The drawbridge tops it off to make it fully impenetrable. In the rare case an intruder makes it beyond the amphibious reptiles then I give them hell with 3 week old tuna casserole.
He is god..He was also having dinner with Martin Newell in my local pub in Wivenhoe tonight.....long rule to Cooper-Clarke...big up to the style he has.
Remember 'Something Else 1979' John, It was our TV programme you were on, Remember the Arndale in Manchester too, Where we tried to film, but security blew, Us up the road, and back to the loo, we all go. To film you in your prime at BBC studio. You inspired me to write, I've a full book of wit, Hey, no, its not like a bucket full of s....t, Its whacky, its shocking, its fun and well bad, Well, i had a good teacher, yes you John my lad !! If you do not know what poetry is then you certainly don't recognise this as true poetry. This is poetry of the highest order it reflects the society of it's time, Betjeman worked under constraints of censorship, hence you have John Cooper Clarke fighting rebellious against an age of suffocation, his work is more relevant today than anything that Betjeman has said.
And yet... It would be lovely to hear JCC doing a version of Slough. I think there is a common thread in some of the anger and the nostalgic yearning for a version of the past that was never really there. It's there in Orwell and Osborne's Look Back in Anger, too. I suspect that time will place JCC in more of a traditional role than his use of the f-word (in the original) and his punk stylings might suggest.
Isn't there's a version of this recorded somewhere where the second line is "bloody-minded, bloody mean" instead of "to bloody keep it bloody clean" or the more sweary version of that? Maybe it was a Peel session version or something. Anybody else heard that version?
Hello, I'm from the North, and in the North we have various iiitems. Chicken. Potatoes. Glasses. Tarmac. Road Signs. Biscuits. Grandmaas . . (continue ad nauseum until you can think of no more iitems . .
Terrible, I'm yet to receive any financial, social or sexual reward for my impeccable generic Northern accent.. All I've really managed to do is upset a few close friends and drive a few acquaintances loopy.. But it's all worth it in the long run..
@Meepmeeple It's an expression that is not meant to be read with semantic literalness. Kind of like, "you ain't nothing". Besides, everyone else seemed to have understood it.

I like them both. Neither is the best poet by certain standards, but both caught the mood of a particular time perfectly.

This isn't particularly insightful or eye opening but I can't help but notice how much like a young Bob Dylan young John Clarke looked.
