It’s FlexGate Friday in upsidedownland thanks Tim
This reminds me of repair i did to my dslr camera whose focusing motors flex cable were ripped off at the sides due to prolonged opening and closing of the lens. I am not a professional repair guy but due to curiosity and being a electrical engineer I opened the lens on my own to figure out what the problem was. It was kind of intimidating at first to open a DSLR lens but then i figured out somehow and noticed the flex cable that was wearing off . I went to Nikons official service centre to ask them if they can fix it for me but they straight away told that they will replace the entire lens . I was totally shocked getting such a reply from official service centre how come the official service centre not have replacement flex cable 😅. Then i asked with some local camera repair guys they also denied servicing up . I took it in my own hands and did a similar fix not so clean but it does the job . Maybe some time in future i will try to do this as clean as yours . The video is in my channel if anyone wants to see 🙈.
Excellent tutorial, Tim. Thanks for taking the time to record it and share. Greetings from Lake Forest, CA
Hi you can vaporize the black coating by a blue or violett laser diode from a good laserpointer (2-3W is sufficent) (or a cheap laser engraver machine) from a distance of some cm, not to near that can cause damage of the inner layer of the flex . :)
I really love that you guys find solutions to typical screwups that manufacturers make. It is so impressive. Stupid question: Is it possible to use like a fiberglass pen to remove the coatings? I don't have your stable hands. I have tried to remove coating on flex cable (broken cable for learning) with knife, but screw up. I did everything wrong with the knife so I gave up. I'm so impressed that you find all of these solutions. Thank you for a great lesson Tim.
I haven’t tried with a fiberglass pen yet. Worth a shot for sure!
Use a knife blade like a card scraper in woodworking, and you are a lot less likely to scrape too deep or cut through the copper.
Paul from Rossmann Repair uses a fibreglass pen in this video on FlexGate actually ua-cam.com/video/hiT81o-afu4/v-deo.html
@@MrPnew1 - I’d count that as an authoritative yes on the tool, assuming it worked well for the repair... have not watched yet
I like how you burn through that last layer. I scrape to it and sometimes through the dang copper.
Excellent video. Thank you, very informative. All the best from Buenos Aires.
impressive works. thanks for sharing.
How amazing. Very well explained and presented. Love your content!
Scraping is normally better done with one’s blade at 90+ degrees to the direction you are scraping. Look at video of using a card scraper in wood working. Would be nice to have custom jig to lay the screen in that would support that cable flat, for scraping too. Excellent repair tutorial! Thank you!
Thank you for the great video, very informative, but wouldn't it be nicer and easier if you use a thinner soldering tip for the job.
No.
Excellent job. Congrats.
use a Fiber Glass pen to scrape the coating off the ribbon, its a lot easier
Thanks, very precious and great work.
Tim got the intro ! Tim's gangsta, you guys didn't know that.
Maybe use some Jessa Tape to hold down the screen side flex just for scraping?
Spotted two of the LED detect traces are joined, Im assuming this is ok? Just I have seen many other videos and non of them do so. Thanks.
Those are the led return lines, and yes, we bridge and combine them all. It adds redundancy as if one line fails, the display will be unaffected.
@@TCRSCircuit Amazing to know thanks!
hello. have a good day. thank you for the videos that are very useful for me. can you tell me the name of the blue glue you used to paste on the solder area? and how much is the copper wire? How many mm? Thank you
great video dude, I just noticed that my A1708 camera does not work. I wonder if its the same issue. Do cameras flexgate also snap on these?
They can, but it’s more rare. I’ve seen a handful but more often than not they are ok
Hello, many thanks for the video, would you please let me know what specific of the wire you used to connect 6 signal pins? Thanks again.
I don’t have any donor display to grab a flex cable from, do you know where to buy one that would work to solder on? If so what part should I be looking for? Awesome video too , it save me big $$ if I can fix my one. Thanks
I have not yet tried this. I keep soldering a wire, LOL. And yes, I have to keep redoing it. LOL.
Is this enameled, or bare copper wire being used for the jumpers? Looks like a very tiny gauge.
Bare copper. I’ll check on the gauge tomorrow, but it’s about the size of a human hair for the 6 return lines
0.020 is the gauge...
I like your video and is a solution to my current laptop problem- 2017 model. What is the cost for this service?
Hello, we charge $259. If you’d like to send in your laptop please visit www.tcrscircuit.repair
If it’s ok to connect all 6 lines together, would it be better and easier to use a piece of wick?
After all the discussion today awesome to see you dropped this, Tim. Thanks for such a great video.
What gauge jumper were you using (the smaller - you mentioned you mentioned the size for the actual backlight traces).
Discussion?
@@TCRSCircuit in the group Tim, in one of my posts where I linked this video
Tim said this in a later comment 0.020 is the gauge
which size jumper wire to repair flex gate? 0.1mm? or 0.05mm?
Hello, what 'glue' are you using to join the cable?
How amazing
Thanks Tim 👏👏👍👍
Mine is 2019 and have same problem
Good brother
Display shuts off and backlight shuts off are different topics
Thank you so much for the video! I've seen people use the loop method in other videos but didn't quite understand the reasoning for it, so thanks for explaining! Just curious, have you ever tried a flexgate repair for the webcam? The traces are much tinier and closer together, its almost impossible not to bridge them. I wonder if a loop would also work for those traces 🤔
Loop would not work. In my opinion it isn’t practical to do the webcam repair
@@TCRSCircuit haha yea, tried a couple of times and gave up 😅
Loop won't work, but it can be done, practice, practice, practice, you can do it! Touch id on iPhone 7-8 is much more difficult and it can done fast once you get really good at it, practice more.
Amazing!
Can this be done with only 3.5x magnifier?
No.
🎉 how to set up tbe toshibz computer
So can basically replace the wire only which is much easier, I guess ?
(and then have to replace it in a few years again I guess)
Am I right ?
No.
The cable is extended so it should never have the problem again.
Replacing the backlight flex like this is much harder than replacing the display itself, but it is cheaper when a skilled repair shop does it.
Thx for the answer! Well.. what a bad luck then 😕 warranty time is over so I'm screwed. This is no daily business for a "normal" repair shop I guess so I'm wondering if in Germany someone offers this.
Hy! Apple changed my display (on an A1708 model) for free, despite out of warranty (purchase was Dec. '2016). Happy now! But yeah, let's be honest, for this model they were least 2x service programs (display and keyboard) so it's not a flawless piece of gadget.
@@ballyp81 Lucky! Usually they send you packing!
Can’t deny being happy about it. All would cost 606.- swiss francs (484.- display, 79.- work, 43.- tax)
So is it fine to bridge all 6 thin wires? 42:30
Yes. Those are all the LED return lines. Bridging them durability as if one trace breaks down the line, you will still have complete display function. Basically all these lines do is complete the circuit between the 6 LED strips in the display.
I dont have a microscope can i use magnifying glass instead?
Absolutely not.
@@TCRSCircuit i see. Thanks!
@@MrNixified Just get the experience to open the LCD and swap the LCD panel from a housing with the backlight included from a cracked screen. That is how we repair customers screens by only charging around £100.
I LOVE YOU! MARRY ME!!!!
GREAT VIDEO!
Unfortunately for me my screen is cracked. Very small crack at the top of the screen now made the whole screen go black when turning it on. Backlight works but the screen is just black, no logo no sound, tried all the things like reset the vram and so on and still nothing, I was told it’s the way apple is designed as soon as it detects a screen failure it just won’t let me use it, so a screen replacement is the only way to repair it. The thing is I paid around 1,000$ for this macbook pro a few years ago and I’m not gonna pay 500$ for a screen, does anyone know a cheaper place to get those screens? Mine is a 2016 A1707 macbook pro touch 15”. Thanks
No, that is the cost of the screens unfortunately, no way around it
I am now legally blind so you are now legally sued 🤣
Most annoying problem ever
How much would you charge to fix it? I wouldn't mind shipping you my computer!
Hi Malik, We charge $259 for this. If you want to send your macbook in, please create a new ticket at www.tcrscircuit.repair/newticket . Thank you!
@@TCRSCircuit OK. Meanwhile, how does ths shipping work?
@@malikd2509 all the instructions are on that link. Basically you ship it in at your cost and we handle the rest.
@@TCRSCircuit is it $259 for all laptop models? MacBook Pro 15" 2016 Model? Which size FedEx box fits best Small, Med or Large, or do you need your own custom box? Thx
@@Allen2989LA flexgate is the same price regardless of the model. The FedEx one rate large box works well,
Mmm
Wooooooooo!!
lol
Looks like a dumb way to fix this not gonna lie
I can do what you did but faster
