@user-vr2ew8js5q Music touches people differently and it's not surprising that our reactions are not always similar to others. There is a mystery somewhere ...
@vlpr-en5cc I appreciated your thoughtful words and unfortunately it is true what you say about the path to the irrevocable, and so well put. Yes, it is a tragedy when a person dies (RIP Eric Carmen) and, as you say, some very talented, cheerful people are passing away at the moment. I am thinking right now of Maurizio Pollini, a wonderful pianist, who died about two weeks ago. I was shocked that hardly any news of his demise was reported by the press and the television. For the last two days I have been listening on UA-cam to the four Rachmaninoff piano concertos played by the excellent Ukrainian pianist, Anna Fedorova. As you say, his piano concertos are all masterpieces and I must say that I am now particularly attracted to No. 3., one performance of which was played by Rachmaninoff and conducted by Mahler in New York ! The beginning enraptures one. Yes, longing, yearning, sadness, passion is there in his music. Just listen to his "Elegie" no. 3, played by the composer himself on the Telarc CD "A Window in Time" .I believe his first three concertos were written before he fled Russia in 1917 and the fourth was written in 1926 and revised two or three times. Apparently after having left his beloved Russia he could not really compose music and devoted himself to giving concerts. I have a small book entitled "Réflexions et Souvenirs" where texts which appeared between 1910 and 1943 in English or Russian have been translated into French. It is highly absorbing and revelatory. In the first chapter he talks about the Russia he had known and how he loved the Steppes, the cornfields, farming, etc. There is a very interesting DVD about him too where we "meet" his grandson who at the time was living in the house that his grandfather built in the 1930s outside Lucerne. I fell under the spell of Rachmaninoff many years ago and am still there !
I know, how you feel ! His songs touch and rescued me . Loved his song for years, But his name wasn't pushed out there ! I loved his songs but didn't recognize his face or name. I know Carol Bayer sager, Joanne Mitchell, Lionel Richie, Burt Backrack ( I know I jacketed up the spelling of their names) ERIC CARMEN'S NAME SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN OUR EARS, A WHOLE LOT MORE ,AND HIS NAME IN OUR EARS JUST AS MUCH. GREAT ARTIST
Thank you RedneckSwede for your message. I absolutely agree with you. Eric's lyrics and beautiful gift of voice is and will remain a blessing. I wish I still had this original album. Yet at my young age - - - LOL! Even @ 65 years young, his voice and songs bring me back to happier times in my life. Tale Svenska?
Shortly after graduating from high school, my girlfriend died in a car accident. After a few months of trying to heal from her loss I enlisted in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. I eventually found myself in the middle of the Mojave desert at Marine Corps base 29 Palms as a field medic/base dispensary corpsman. A "sand sailor"...and about as isolated as one could get. At that time you couldn't get radio or television reception unless you paid for a cable sevice. 1976 I found this album at the base exchange and could really relate to this song. On my "down days" I would play this song from time to time. I still have the album. RIP Eric Carmen.
I remember this song very well. I was in the Air Force 1977. I was stationed overseas hanging out at the recreation Center when I heard this. I was alone on the base and I just arrive there. I didn’ know anyone. So I sat there on the couch listening to this song. I felt alone. But little by little I started to meet new friends. Some where in the same boat as me. We all became friends. Thank you Eric Carmen for being there. I will never forget this song.
As a young guy in the 60's and 70's living in L.A. wasn't easy. I never really wanted to be alone. I looked for love and friendship all over. In 1977, New Years eve, I met the love of my life and for 40 years we were all we had, or needed. We had friends, but preferred OUR time together even more. In 2017, they passed away and here I am again, all by myself. I'm thankful for the glorious, wonderful love filled years I had, but when you lose that half of you ,the pain and emptiness never goes away. I was lucky finding that ONE someone special to make me whole and make my life better. Now, it's time to be by myself again. Thank God for the memories......
Its wonderful that you lived in L.A. during the 70's, and preferred the time alone. You have the right attitude. You have the memories. I'm in L.A. and lost my best friend of 19 years. It hurts more than anyone knows.
I had this song going around in my head after speaking to my 85 year old father on the phone. I'm almost 60, and he is alone in the house I grew up in, and my mother and my brother are deceased. I'm alone 200 kilometres away and I don't have transport to go and visit him. I just got melancholy thinking of all the people who are alone, although not necessarily lonely. My father and I both use a walker to get around as he is old and I am disabled, but thinking of us wandering our mostly empty homes just bought this song into my head and I had to listen to it. It is as beautiful as I remember, and I am saddened to know that the man who sang it is no longer with us. We will all be dust again, but the music lives on! Thank you for the melody!
Me too! My girlfriend and I listened to the Raspberries and his solo songs as well. Very romantically arranged and we would make out passionately while his music played in the background....😢
I was lucky enough to meet Eric Carmen in person. I was parking cars at the Gates Mills Towers in Mayfield Heights Ohio, where Eric lived at the time.(1985?) I was a 21 year old valet for Milano's Italian Restaurant running to get a car in the underground garage adjacent to the restaurant. There in the garage, Eric appeared out of nowhere. I said hi, and stupidly said, you are all be yourself...he laughed, got into a Mercedes 450 SL convertible and drove away...I still remember it as it if were yesterday. RIP.
Rest in peace. This song has always brought tears from my eyes. You spoke to the lonely hearts in the world and let us know we were not alone in being alone which gave a little comfort somehow. Thank you.
I just got the news that he passed away peacefully in his sleep. This song tore my heart out of my chest I must say! Incredible music production all around! Reminds me of an Anerican Elton John, especially with all the fantastic piano playing..
The melody was taken from the 2nd Piano Concerto by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The verse harmonies are right out of that piece. Wait until you hear Horowitz playing it!
I've never been able to listen to this song without my eyes welling up with tears... even as a child...6 years old in 1975... I felt the sadness flow through my body when i would heart it in the radio (KFRC in San Francisco), yet I had no idea what the meaning of this song was. I still have the same feeling every time I hear it. Such a priceless masterpiece. ❤
I know that feeling... as I read your post a beautiful memory came to me while I was listening to this song, I was 6 years old while riding in my dad's car back in 1984 in Mexico City, and while listening to the radio, this song came up, and it resonated with my mood at the time because I felt melancholic and sad, but it felt good to hear the song because it transmitted a comfort, soothing feeling, so after this song they played , Paul McCartney, Let em in,it felt so good, that the memory keeps stirring up my head over and over again. God Bless...
I'm just a decade behind Mr. Carmen, and his amazingly emotional music has long been the stuff of important interludes in the soundtrack of my life. My big regret is that I hadn't visited his official site to thank him while he was still with us. Long may his music continue to live on to help generations to come, the way he penned tunes that spoke from the heart of mine.
Rest In Sweet Peace Eric.❤ I used to sing along with your record when I was a kid growing up. My Mom bought two 45's of this song. We ruined the first one from overplay! Then my Mom got tickets and we went to see you on tour, I think it was with Olivia Newton John! Thank you Eric for being a huge part of the soundtrack of of my life and beautiful memories with my Mom! My sincere condolences to his family and friends.
As a teenager, when this song first came out, I thought it was kind of sappy and stupid. Now at 60 and having just lost my wife of forty years, I can't stop listening and crying. Funny how life changes things.
3:13 - 5:18 has Eric Carmen ever gotten props for how absolutely perfect this piano interlude is? It is THEE perfect complement to Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto #2, second movement AND to All By Myself. Genius.
I'm now 75 and widowed.. Most friends have moved far, have been lost for years, or have died. My children are grown adults with families of their own, but I am estranged with two and close with my eldest. I am battling brain cancer, have sold my home and been living in my own apartment, alone for years. Both loneliness and being alone haunt me these days. This song speaks volumes to me.
Hey brother. You don't have to be lonely. Your a great man. You have moved mountains in your lifetime. You can do this. Find that strength inside like you did when your family was young. You can be that man again. We care about you. Fight, fight till your last breath.
I have a strong feeling that he’s not by himself. He’s with friends and loved ones and he wants us to know that he is with us as well. We’ll see you later Eric. Peace
RIP Bro! This was the first song that made me cry in a good way, and exposed me to the complications of musical form. I was just a child, a child who spent far too much time alone in hospitals, so I related to the music as I could, as I needed. Thank you for the outlet and the education! I only wish I'd have commented before.
"I used to think that the worst thing in life was to end up alone. It's not. The worst thing in life is to end up with people who make you feel alone." - Lance Clayton
Pretty much... Eric did write this song and the music, which is the hard part. Doing a cover is 1000 times easier than writing and composing the music...@@kermitfrog593
I remember being a teenager listening to this song over and over and crying and now that I am much older I find that it still brings me to tears. Only now I understand it even more deeply than I did so many years ago.
Yes this song makes me cry as a little girl I always knew I would be Alone and never be.married and now at fifty eight years old this song hurts even more it's a great song though
This song is actually taken from Rachmanninoff piano concerto no 2, so if you like the romantic feel of the song you would like to hear the original piece.
Eric Carmen was a nice man. He lived a hell of a life. I have the greatest respect for songwriters because its a lot of humiliation and you are just constantly producing bad song after bad song at first. I loved his work with The Raspberries. He was a hell of an all-around musician. He had a hell of a band. Then he probably wanted to move on and do a solo career. To me, though I don't know his entire discography, this is his peak in songwriting. This song is irreplaceable and will be considered a classic for ages to come. Songwriters are magical beings. He also kept in touch with his fans on the forums. He really did love them. That's a nice man.
Bellísima canción Evoca los tiempos inicios de siglo 20, clasica. Piano da un mágico entorno. Se inmortalizó Eric con su talento. Descansa en paz, nosotros disfrutamos tu obra musical.
Damn Rip a legend. I'm a pretty young guy very early 20's so I wasn't alive during this time however my Dad would always play this music since I was a baby so this tune is almost a like lullaby, I just get a very nostalgic feeling every time I hear it. As soon as I heard the news I rushed over to make sure it was true. Sad news but I'm glad he was alive to make this music. Legends never die.
Well of course its going to be played for 200 years considering its already been played for 120 years ever since Rachmaninoff originally wrote it in the second movement of his piano concerto number 2 Opus 18 in 1901... And Eric Carmen's song "Never gonna fall in love again" is totally ripped off from the middle of Rachmaninoff's Symphony #2 Opus 27. Eric Carmen has TOTALLY plagiarized and ripped off Rachmaninoff!!!
@@roberthotchkiss1 - of course, Rachmaninoff's originals are far superior... but he had no intention of plagriarizing. He did let people know his source. (He actually mistakenly thought the pieces had moved into the public domain when he wrote his songs... R's estate contacted him and they made an amicable settlement.) Nor is he anything like the only one to borrow a theme this way. It's been done forever. I One good thing is that sometimes it leads people to discover and learn to appreciate the original composer. Personally, though I grew up in a household that played plenty of Bach, Beethoven, et.al. it was hearing Carmen's songs that helped turn me into a big Rachmaninoff fan. (Another example of borrowing - the year before this pair of songs, Barry Manilow had one of his first couple of hits - "Could it Be Magic" - by building on Chopin's Prelude in C minor. Of course that wasn't remotely masked - he played the prelude itself at the start, then spun it into his song.)
@@lionsbru While I agree that plagiarism of the great classical composers is far too common in the music industry, I hardly find a 12% royalty share to be an "amicable" settlement. As I understood it, Rachmaninoff's estate was told "take the 12% or we'll see you in court". Eric Carmen and the record companies made tens of millions of dollars, and Rachmaninoff's estate got merely a small fraction of what Eric Carmen and Arista / Geffen records made off of Rachmaninoff's genius. While true that Eric Carmen did expose millions of people to Rachmaninoff's music, I have far more respect for an artist whose music is novel and original.
@@roberthotchkiss1 Rachmaninoff's estate, however, didn't write the piece. Rachmaninoff did. He was dead at the time. His heirs are lucky there's a law that gives them a piece of the cake.
As a former mental health worker, I can say with certainty that the greatest curse in America is the condition of loneliness. Working in the field of suicide prevention, I learned by frequent contact with callers to suicide crisis lines that the single most prevalent reason they call for help is that they do not want to live alone anymore. A significant percentage of those who have families and friends feel a deep sense of loneliness. Many are wrongly diagnosed with depression when in reality they suffer from loneliness. Putting them in social settings is often not the answer. They need a soul mate, for lack of a better term. Someone to share their innermost fears and hopes. Eric's song could be the theme song for those whose lives are no longer meaningful because of their lack of connecting with some person with whom they can share a two-way, unselfish relationship. I have become such a lonely person. My love for life was destroyed by a selfish wife who used me, deceived me, and betrayed me over and over again. I never fell in love again because, as the lyrics in Eric's song express, I did not want to suffer that degree of emotional pain ever again. I thank the classical composer Rachmaninoff for the melody that Eric borrowed to write this song. Eric trained to be a concert pianist and he loved playing Rach's piano concertos. The main melody in this song was borrowed from Rachmaninoff's Symphony No. Two, Second Movement. Look it up on UA-cam and cry as you listen to the hauntingly beautiful melody of Movement 2 as it begins. Those of you reading this who are under the curse of loneliness, hang in there and keep reaching out, reaching out, reaching out until you connect with that right person. I wish you more luck than I have had. I am old now and my chance for true love has passed.
Samsambo --- I guess both of our statements are subjective. I don't think a person can be both lonely and in a MEANINGFUL relationship at the same time.
My grandfather met his soulmate and true love when he was 72 years old on what he thought was his last holiday before death. That was when I was twenty, I'm now 44 and he died 3 years ago, still in love with his soulmate after many happy years and life experiences together. Never give up hope my friend. My heart has been crushed, but one day my prince will come too. Until then, I'm happy alone xxx
My husband died in september 2017, I miss him very much, and the lyrics of this song go directly to my heart. I have no brothers or sisters that I can go to, I have but a few friends, and sometimes I miss someone to share my feelings with ! I heard the song again on Valentine's day, and it hurted so much !
Whats so funny about it? Maybe because a scene in Scrubs, when one of the patients sings that song. I'm not a fan of cheesy songs like this. But i'm a fan of classical music and Old time Rock N Roll (meaning, Classic Rock) Thanks to Eric Carmen for bridge the two worlds together, as well as Sergei Rachmanioff
@@Tbop3 Yes, but the lyrics go so good with the music. So sad and incredibly beautiful. As a whole song, it has everything. As my father said once: "That song is complete"😢
Ever since the love of my life was killed, I have felt alone excepting the presence of the Lord. That hasn't changed in the 5 years since her passing, and I am 77 now. This song has always been a part of me, but now more than ever!
I'm just now hearing this long extended version and I must say I love it! I've suffered from clinical depression and anxiety for many years. It hit me completely out of the blue when I was 26 years old with no warning whatsoever! I lost many years of my life to this horrible disease but I'm glad that I'm still here even though I contemplated suicide many years due to the horrific physical symptoms of depression. Believe me it's very real and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!! God bless and here's to a wonderful 2024!!!
I grew up with this song from 12 on with 3 sister and large group of friends but being the only white boy in the group they called me the Preacher. Then I was moved to a place smaller and was alone. I only had music and this saved me.
the antithesis to this all-too-sometimes-true song is that we can reach out to a friend. you are not alone. you are loved by another person. speed dial or text them ! God bless you too.
RIP Eric Carmen 🙏 When you came to the Hard Rock Cafe Cleveland with your lovely wife Amy, you were always so vibrant and loved life. Your songs will play forever more! ❤
The Original (with some help from Rachmaninoff) will forever be the standard we adhere to and relate to. Better than Celine's. RIP Eric Carmen. You are not All By Yourself. You never were. Your fans will remember you and love this song forever.
Jeanne Nixon i agree nothing to add.... I agree with Jeanne about the original ... sometimes we don,t want to .... far from the original. We can compare ... OK .... but ... our heart cannot be ....
Rachmaninoff would approve. These lyrics so capture “the feels” I get from his Concerto No. 2. Sergei and Eric would have made a killer combo if they had lived in the same era; they sure did here. ❤
Absolutely spot on. Many wouldn't realise the source of this piece, and attribute it to Rachmaninoff. It has the Rachmaninoff signature style. I was introduced to Rachmaninoff when I first watched Brief Encounter (1945) by David Lean. It is full of Rachmaninoff's music.
Rachmaninoff's estate certainly approved after they got a cut of the song and a full composing credit. Quite rightly. Rachmaninoff died in 1943 and so his music was not free from copyright in 1972. When Carmen recorded and released this song he believed the music was public domain and it was only after its release that Rachmaninoff's estate contacted him and explained the music was protected internationally. They came to an agreement. The estate got 12.5% and a full composing credit. So this song is registered as - Composed by Eric Carman and Sergei Rachmaninoff.
Fun fact: The melody was derived from Rachmaninoff's second piano structure: ua-cam.com/video/kS8hk0kL2sE/v-deo.html It's original but to a certain degree. Goes to show that some music can be so emotional that it inspires other people to make their own versions of it, beautiful nonetheless.(In this case, Rachmaninoff's music was passed on by Carmen)
I will argue that point on one song and one song only Johnny cash did a cover of a nine inch nails song titled hurt thst was so good one of the members of NIN said it wasn’t his song anymore
I always prefer this than any other versions. The way he sings it is really heartfelt. I don’t know if this is the original but I always like Eric Carmen’s version.
Yes, my dear, from someone that grew up in this era, this IS the original No one can sing it better than the artist that manifested this from their soul.
Это плагиат, это музыка русского композитора Сергея Рахманинова из его концерта для фортепиано с оркестром , это русская мелодия , это русская гармония , это русская музыка , это русская душа

God bless you, life teaches to be resilient and strong.

I cry every time I hear it.😢
As a young guy in the 60's and 70's living in L.A. wasn't easy.
I'm so sorry u lost your other half may God heal your pain ....
😢
Its wonderful that you lived in L.A. during the 70's, and preferred the time alone. You have the right attitude. You have the memories. I'm in L.A. and lost my best friend of 19 years. It hurts more than anyone knows.
😢
I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you will be fine! I am with you in my heart.
This was music, when music existed, the good kind, when the stars were authentic, leaving things as wonderful as this song. R.I.P. Eric.
I was so sad to hear of Eric Carman’s passing today and I immediately thought of this song.
Who's Eric Cartman?
Me too. So I am playing it and singing with EC. ❤
Me too! My girlfriend and I listened to the Raspberries and his solo songs as well. Very romantically arranged and we would make out passionately while his music played in the background....😢
Now singing with the angels in Heaven, Eric Carmen, still not all by yourself. My heart goes out to the family.
RIP Eric Carmen. Music from my childhood. Thank you.
RIP.
Cute!❤
Lucky you 😂
So nice...
Wow. Nice interaction. If latest mobile phone only exist you might have a photo with him.

You Got It Get My Job
Dr. Don Rose (snort snort). The epitome of obnoxious. LOL

Beautiful song very emotional
Gorgeous
Моё субъективное мнение, но раньше музыка была лучше.
Sometimes the loneliest place is a crowd. Eric Carmen is extraordinary and nobody could sing this song better.

This song is going to be played 200 years from now. It's eternal.
@@lionsbru Blah blah blah blah, boring, whiny pathetic song, for total losers
I am old now and my chance for true love has passed.
its never too late to enjoy life. fuck what society says about age everyone deserves the right to enjoy life and love, no matter what.

it's addictive listening to these song, Unfortunately, artist today have no inspiration and no talent for music. Is this your favorite song?
The best is always unsurpassable!
Agreed. I love the link to Rachmaninoff No 2, makes me appreciate that concerto even more. Thanks for other informative comments here.

No matter how high a note Celine may have hit in the cover, it isn't as emotionally powerful as this. The originals are always better.
Fun fact: The melody was derived from Rachmaninoff's second piano structure:
ua-cam.com/video/kS8hk0kL2sE/v-deo.html
It's original but to a certain degree. Goes to show that some music can be so emotional that it inspires other people to make their own versions of it, beautiful nonetheless.(In this case, Rachmaninoff's music was passed on by Carmen)

No one can sing it better than the artist that manifested this from their soul.

I agree. Its it the best version because it is original. I was 12 years old when this song came out. Boy how fast time flies😊
Eric Carmen forever. RIP😢
No other singer or musical arrangement surpasses this. It's magnificent. Moving, emotional, haunting & passionate to me.
Это плагиат, это музыка русского композитора Сергея Рахманинова из его концерта для фортепиано с оркестром , это русская мелодия , это русская гармония , это русская музыка , это русская душа

@@Sonate-19// my dear friend. You are correct about the piano music ÍNTEGRATED to song … you must know that this is not the original. Original is from 1972 and it was the product of to songs converted to one ( written by a band called Badfinger. Nelson heard the song and made is version which is considered a classic. Until today i thought Celine's version was the original, i'm so glad i was wrong, this is pure gold, directly from the heart, amazing, you are huge Eric, huge.
May I suggest that you listen to Rachmaninoff 2nd Piano Concerto 2nd movement (adagio Sostenuto), if you think that this one is the original.

Eric carmine took an exceptional piece of music and made it into a OK pop song.
RIP our dear Eric Carmen. You will be missed by millions. Never all y yourself again brother. We all love you so much and will miss you dearly. 74 so young and so tragic.
In the 1980s when I was a student, my friends were listening to the latest songs, but my music textbook was your song, ERIC. It still hasn't changed. And it will continue to be the same. With gratitude and respect, I say "Thank you."
You can hear so much emotion in his voice. Makes you feel he's experiencing what he's singing. And the piano solo pulls out him reliving his past memories.
Mom is gone now I'm all by myself good bye Mom you were the best

Your song was my life. Having to marry because I was with a guy and my parents were Christian. So we had to marry. We are still together nearly 50 years later. However your song makes me think of what might have been.

sad. I was reading he maybe have died. I feel sorry for you. you really like him. I like all of his songs. oh well.
I have liked this song by Eric ever since first hearing it back in the 70,s. Most people find that it can apply to them at some time in their lives. Very beautiful although very poignant . Lovely piano concert.
All By Myself captures the essence of a lonely life alone!
I remember when this song came out around 1976. I was only 18 and had just moved out on my own. It was hard at first and I loved this song whenever I heard it. Many years have since passed, and now in 2022 I find myself alone again. This song is the best ever by Eric Carmen.
Myself as well. Graduated high school in 1976. I,m alone again as well! God bless you .
