  • Well it happened! As suspected the leleupi were cooking up some lil babies in their cave, and I came home Wednesday night to find the fry hatched :O Interestingly, in the past I have left them longer and noticed more fry than what I did this time. I'm glad I got the ones that were there while I could!
    In this video I show you the process of catching these little guys and setting them up in their new breeding rack/grow out tank :)
    Timestamps:
    1:14 - The grow-out tank/breeding rack setup
    2:40 - Finding the African Cichlid fry
    5:17 - Removing the fry - 2 attempts...
    8:25 - An update on the fry! How did they go?
    Let me know.... What are your best fry raising tips? This is my first time ever attempting to raise fry!

    Yea. A smaller tank would be easier. But they are quite active already and swimming around. Which means they are searching for food as well.
    One great tip is to get a shrimp tank. It will build up with small bugs and worms because shrimp do not eat them. So when you see many of these creatures in the shrimp tank, you can put a batch of fry in it and they will have the perfect natural food and clean the tank up as well. Then move them to another tank when they get bigger. And support them with some ground flake food as well, to get them used to it.
    I am breeding killifish myself. I have tried almost all methods to hatch the eggs. Putting them in damp peat moss, on paper towels, in water, and so on. But the best success is just tossing the eggs into a shrimp tank. Shrimp are perfect for keeping the environment clean and tumbling the eggs around.

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  Місяць тому

      Wowwww, how cool!! Shrimp would be so much fun to have too. Thank you so much for the tip! I might actually try that at some point :)

    get a prefilter sponge, or get a sponge and wrap it around the filter intake and secure it with zip ties.

    Kaity, I would separate the parents in a breeder tank and let them breed and care for the fry. Once the fry get a little bigger, then you could put the parents back in the tangynikan tank. Or, you could let them just continue to breed in the main tank. You won’t get all of them to survive but, the parents will get better at protecting them over time, and you’ll get some survivors.

    I LOVE my Leleupi Lemon Cichlid in my 20Gal Tank with their babies that spawned last October 2023. And I am glad I got a hold of a 20Hal Hexagon Tank to let these BABIES grow out. Until now they are a treat to look at and the way they change color and get darker. Hope your baby físhys grow big and not get sucked up into your filter!

    Kaity great job and video! As you learn the tricks of raising fry I am sure you will read many useful tips from all your subscribers. A few tips that work for me is siphoning with an aquarium depth rigid tubing attached to some flexible airline and a small shut off valve at the end. Works well for cleaning debris and moving the fry. You can control the flow precisely by using gravity to back flow by raising/lowering the siphoning line in a plastic container. Another tip is using snails as your aquarium cleaners. Algae isn’t such a problem when they are eating it constantly. All the Best! Dave

  • @hoboelephant37

    Just to give a few more reasons why this is the better way is you can suction cup the cage with the top rail just above the water line so the fry cannot swim out. the fry while in the collapsable mesh breeding cage can't swim into any filter (so you dont have to use your foam covers). And you can target feed the fry in the much smaller area of a breeding cage(3 or 4 times aday) and still let the rest of the tank operate normally. Hope this helps.

    Putting some fine filter bag around the filter intake will work. The foam as you have is fine.as long as holes are smaller the fish. Saves have puréed fish.
    I opened up a prof 3 canister filter nd found an electric yellow in there about 1” long. Not sure how long he was in there for. As no other ” babies in the tank.
    The heater is fine it would drop and they would take off.. hopefully you got yourself one of those inkbird controllers or something similar to watch temps as you don’t want them to cook

    The fry you have from the Leleupi, shell dwelling Multis look exactly the same but they have blue eyes.. don’t worry too much about your water quality as the fry will have an extremely low bio-load and the filter will mature at the same rate the fry will.. it must be baby season as today looking in my tank I have 3 successful Multi mums and the fourth one her shell is at an awkward angle to see if she has fry too, time will tell, it really does raise your spirits when fish breed and is the best indicator that your run a very healthy tank.. take care and best of luck 🤞 ❤

    Ive found with algae blooms and green water the PH gets very high. Never seemed to effect the fish though. Awesome video! That's really cool you've got some fry now to grow on, you did a really good job catching them too given how small they are! Can't wait to see how they grow on 😀🐟🐠 The rack system is coming on well, have you got any other aquariums planned for it as well as the breeding tank? I breed goldfish at home from the pond and have some success with that. I wait for the fish to start spawning then transfer weed with all the eggs in into a water butt at the bottom of the garden which I let fill with rainwater over winter. This then gets an algae bloom in it just before the fish spawn which in turn causes a copepod bloom, so by the time the eggs go in, hatch then the fry use their yolk sacs there's a really good source of food for them! I then feed flakes in there once the fish get big enough and harvest it around October/November when the goldfish are big enough to go into the pond!

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  Місяць тому

      Wow, that is awesome!! It sounds like you've got a really good system going with the goldfish. And thank you :D I don't have any other aquariums specifically planned yet, other than I know I need to move the mollies inside. But the rest I haven't decided on yet :O

    U could squeeze a filter sponge or put some media in your fry tank to get some nitrate, I would worry u don't have nitrate and fry might die?
    Love the anubius in your other tank on the rocks! We tried it but the Africans ate it all after a few months.
    We used the syphon hose method once when we has some red Forrest jewels breeding in a community tank, we managed to save about 20 and grew them and gave them to our local fish store to sell.

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  Місяць тому

      Wow, that's a pretty good yield you got using the siphon! That's good to know. For the fry tank, I originally seeded it with media from my sump, and I was adding food to keep the cycle going, so I do think there were some nitrates that the algae was eating up like crazy. Because of all the Pothos in the sump the Tanganyikan tank it also doesn't get too high in nitrates (unlike the Malawi tank lol), so it wasn't too much of a change for them

    It's always a blast to see fry in a tank! But I'm curious . . . have you considered moving the parents into your garage tank and let them spawn and raise their fry with out the competition and danger from all of the other fish? And I'd venture a guess that the adults will raise them and you probably won't need to separate them. Just a thought. Enjoy the weekend, Kaity! ~Ron

    Kaity, don't worry too much about a pH of 8.8. The fish are adapted for these fluctuations. You can transfer fish into values like that. Slowly buffer the water later on. Values don't have to be spot on, fish don't measure pH in 0.1 increments, they sense changes within a range but they are sensitive to changes outside of their rapid physiological adjustment rate. This is something you learn as you go along, however, you are right to be diligent about testing the parameters. Let's see how the fry get on.

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  Місяць тому

    With your pond fish, if you were losing your ricefish one at a time, I would have said your swordtails were taking them out as there was a significant size difference between your swordtails and ricefish. But losing 7 ricefish and a swordtail at the same time would suggest an environmental issue like water parameters or disease. Maybe test the water with your test kit. Check amongst the rocks as you may find your missing fish but I have found with smaller fish the bodies can melt away quickly.

    When I was breeding maingano cichlids, while a small tank was easier I don't see it being a necessity. Fed 3 times a day, crumbled up flakes almost like a dust and mix it into the water column. They would often times eat while I wasn't watching.

    If you want them to have a better chance of surviving and to stay away from the cannister filter, I would add a couple of plants inside the tank for them to hide, and they will nibble on Algae that grows on them

    I’m so glad that other people have drama when trying to save baby fish 😂 I have done many silly things, in an attempt to separate babies and mummas. After much craziness, I finally had success by setting up a small 20 litre cube tank, popped mumma guppy in there and the next day she gave birth to at least 40 fry. She is back with her tank mates today and the babies are safe and sound, happily eating and swimming with no predators. I had babies survive in my community tank, but now I see I was losing more than half to becoming meals for the other fish. I have another pregnant guppy, but after two days in the labour ward tank, she refused to drop them and was very unhappy. I feared she might die, so today she is back and happy again in the main tank, but sadly I know her babies will be eaten. My husband thinks I’m nuts 😂 when he watches all the things I do, and mistakes I make. Don’t worry Kaity, once you transfer the parents, you will be a grandma to lots of babies in the future. I found that those breeder boxes put in tanks, are not great for the babies to survive in, which is why I decided to get a dedicated fry tank, despite having no room for it, I gave up some kitchen bench space…that’s tank number 5 now 😂 When I started this hobby 5 months ago, I was only going to have 1 tank 🤷‍♀️

      @@sparehead2163 Yes I absolutely have MTS (multiple tank syndrome) a phenomenon effecting many fish keepers, and there is no known cure 😆 Trust me, I am always trying to find space for another tank, but I’m completely out of room, unless I start putting them outside. Unfortunately I don’t have a garage. I just told my husband last night that I’m going to need a bigger shrimp tank, now that they are multiplying. I get the impression that he regrets encouraging this latest hobby of mine.

      Hahaha, that's too funny!! I used to have a Betta tank on the kitchen bench too. Throughout my life it's just been a trial and error of adding tanks to spots then working out where I don't mind having them. This is my first time trying a garage though LOL. And that's good to know, I think I will definitely get to have way more babies if I move the parents in there!

    Ik ur an experience fish keeper, but id like to share to this you. Use a smaller tank so that you can see the fish and keep on track wether they are eating or not, use a sponge filter to lessen the chance of the fry getting sucked, dont use substrates/gravel, so that u can clean the tank without mixing the gravel and stressing the fish. But that tank is good for mouthbrooding cichlids since they just place the fry on thier mouth and u can know that theres fry around, bc of that big tank u wont be able to tell if there are any fry.

    Off topic for the video, Kaity, and I don't know if you broach it somewhere in one of your other videos, but how did you get Leila so tame? I have two (male) Pacific Parrotlets and they're not tame. Both bought in a store. Maybe Leila is a handfed baby you got privately? She's so cute, I always hope to see more of her (are we sure it's a female?) but I understand this is a fish-channel so to speak.
    Anyway, greetings from Sweden...👋

      She was hand-fed and raised by my Aunty before I got her which definitely helped, and my Aunty said Laila's personality was quite confident. She has laid an egg before so she's definitely a girl. The other thing my Aunty mentioned is that if you get one Parrotlet they're more likely to bond to you whereas if you have two they're more likely to bond to each other. I'm always happy to answer questions about little Laila and definitely show more of her :p

    The easiest way to save fry is to put mom in the nursery tank before she spits if you have mouth brooders. You just have to learn what she looks like when shes holding/pregnant.

    I used to think that cichlids keep them in their mouths to take care of their babies, which is true.. My aquarium was a back sump and one day when I put my hand into the sump, I felt that something was touching my hand and When I looked with a flashlight, I noticed about 20 small damasoni and electric yellow fish, and it had been a while since they were born because they were about 1 cm, but I don't know how they grew without feeding. In short, I was happy that day. And I transferred them to another tank.

    You can get sponge pre-filters for the hang on the back filter. Feed the babies live baby brine shrimp. Fry do not know what is food so they may not go after dead food. I found that live food (moving or twitching) causes the fry to investigate and eat them. You can use a pipette or something to target feed. You could create a fry station. See ua-cam.com/video/v3piX0S_qGI/v-deo.html. You could connect with Dean since he breeds a lot of fish and ask him questions.

    Do you have the lights on a timer or do they do have a daylight cycle? If timer Drop hours till algae stops growing like crazy. If daylight cycle reduce hours or intensity.
    I have ecotech radion even with daylight cycle it’s too long and get lots of algae growth. It’s the kind the pleco won’t eat. So become annoying.

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  Місяць тому

      They're got a timer on them, but I set them to be on around 12hrs a day. I normally check my tanks in the morning and night, so I find when I change it to be shorter hours I just end up turning the lights back on haha

      @@Kaityscichlids I have mine cycling opposite of true sun cycle i.e. their dawn is at 2pm and gradually lightens and colour changes to a “noon” at around 8pm then they have dusk about 1-2am so basically a 12hr cycle. But light is on for 8/9 hrs with max bright for about 4/6 hrs.
      I use room light to inspect. If I need to look in tank I turn on tank with the overuse. They are probably like “wtf man were trying to sleep. But they have no say as I am their master muhahaha… 🤣
      Just with algae have you considered putting up a opaque background to block light on the window tank. Other option is putting up a clear tint film with UV blockout as it might cut down algae growth and still look nice and see through.
