Also, from reading a few of these responses, I now realize the repeated syllable nickname thing is not only my family. Lol.
Neneng is standard for girls tho. Same with utoy or totoy for boys. There are way more unconventional ones like my aunt's for example. Legal name Jonalette, nickname Duds. Like how??
Neneng i think usually goes for the eldest daughter because an aunt on my mother's side goes by the same nickname. Tl;dr: filipino nickname semantics are weird af
Our family uses our baby names and its always the repeating ones. Red is Yeyad, Bless id Bebe, Ryu is Yayong, Chiyo is Teyong, Ralph is YapYap. I was expecting an entirely different punch line when he told that her aunt wasn't calling her Jo Koy. I was already laughing hard because I thought he was going to say she called her "syokoy" as an insult. But it turned into a more wholesome story instead. Edit: here's an excerpt of syokoy in wikipedia: The Siyokoy (Syokoy) are creatures in Philippine mythology which were members of Bantay Tubig (merfolk). They are usually illustrated as green-skinned humanoids with scales, webbed limbs, and fins.
I'm Filipino and my name is Jophet but they call me Pedro which is my father's nickname, everytime someone calls pedro, me and my father responds..hahaha
Everyone in my family calls my great uncle "Uncle Dada" because apprently when I was young I heard some relatives calling him "Uncle" and some relatives calling him "Dad" and one day tiny little me called him "Uncle Dada" and it has stuck since 🤣🤣🤣
I just realize, since Indonesian and Tagalog have similarities, "ko" in Talagog means "ku" in Indonesian. "Ku" is from the word "Aku" means "My / I". So, if Jo Koy is Indonesian and he also misheard his name, it would be Jo Kuy. In Indonesian slang, "Kuy" can be mean "lets go". So, if his aunty said "Jo-ku, makan" (My Jo, eat), and he heard "Jo, kuy, makan" (Jo, let's go eat), it still makes sense, but his aunty is really posh then.
If I'm not mistaken, Indonesian and Tagalog share the same language family (all the way back Sanskrit I believe) and through time (and Spanish colonization) changed.

Jo was hands down the best show ive seen. Never laughed so hard in my life. Highly recommend seeing him anytime
So funny. Herbert is a rad name, too. One of the funniest men ever. Salamat, JoKoy! 🏆🎭🇵🇭🇨🇦
AWWWWW!!!! That is not where I thought it was going, but that is so so sweet!!!
This was so sweet and effing hilarious at the same time
Indonesian language and Tagalog come from the same root. If " my Jo" Tagalog is Joko, in Indonesian is Joku (short for Jo aku)
Ako in Filipino means i/me.
Ako ay Filipino = I am a Filipino
Joko in Indonesia means young men... Boys teenager 😊😁
In the Philippines, you get a name, a nickname, and a Filipino nickname that has NOTHING to do with your name. An example: Patricia > Patti > Neneng
@@finnmurtons8727 Duds might be short for Duday, pronounced Dood-i ( I, like in 'I am')...a common nickname for girls
My parents named me “Michael” but everyone calls me (and no BS) “Manok”
At least not “Burnok”
"manok" means "chicken" in one of our native languages.
so,,, ikaw ang bunso? 😂
Maybe u didnt want to come out when u were being born. So Ur mom said “ Manok! “
Ikaw paborito ni Papa mo manok , yun lang talaga yun hahahahaha
I don't know why I am crying, I lost my aunt in 2018, she loved me like her son
When your nickname hits you decades later 😁🙏💜this
My first time watching him and I'm already in stitches.he Connected with me instantly.
I feel my heart crack at hearing JoKo's origin
This accent of ours Filipinos when we speak english and he does it spot on. IT ALWAYS GETS ME LMFAO
So funny & heart centered 💕
Our family uses our baby names and its always the repeating ones. Red is Yeyad, Bless id Bebe, Ryu is Yayong, Chiyo is Teyong, Ralph is YapYap. Some how we owe it all to our bunso Teyong because thats how he pronounce our names when he was a little kid. :D And up until now we still use this even we're grown ass adults. HAHAHA
I was expecting an entirely different punch line when he told that her aunt wasn't calling her Jo Koy. I was already laughing hard because I thought he was going to say she called her "syokoy" as an insult. But it turned into a more wholesome story instead.
Edit: here's an excerpt of syokoy in wikipedia:
The Siyokoy (Syokoy) are creatures in Philippine mythology which were members of Bantay Tubig (merfolk). They are usually illustrated as green-skinned humanoids with scales, webbed limbs, and fins.
I'm Filipino and my name is Jophet but they call me Pedro which is my father's nickname, everytime someone calls pedro, me and my father responds..hahaha
filipinos mostly call their sons Boy and their daughters Girlie.
Or Baby.
Niece as Denise and Nephew as Denephew? Jok 😂✌️
His impression of his Tita Evelyn, SPOT ON. I rollled!!! And had some small flashbacks, but it was ok….
Love this and yes some tears along with laughter... God bless you and thanks for helping me to learn some Filipino.
My name in birth certificate is Nguyen , and my mom called me Na 😂😂😂
His Aunt said “Jo Ko eat na!” If you say that fast enough it sounds like Ji Koy because of the letter e in eat.
Everyone in my family calls my great uncle "Uncle Dada" because apprently when I was young I heard some relatives calling him "Uncle" and some relatives calling him "Dad" and one day tiny little me called him "Uncle Dada" and it has stuck since 🤣🤣🤣
Koy still means my in laos
So technically it still means "my Jo "
LMAO I FELT THAT My actual name sounds nowhere near my nickname 😂
Is makan means eat?Because in our dialect(Ilocano in Luzon area)Makan means eat
@@phoebelyngonzales3899 yep makan means eat in Malay (including Indonesian, since it was based on Malay)
@@benrasjid it's an Ilokano word. One of dialect in our country. But in our national language,"KAIN".Seems like Luzon have more similar Malay's and Indonesian words. In Mindanao, they have Spanish words. Maybe Indonesian and Malay settled in Luzon area before
@@phoebelyngonzales3899 from what I learn before, Tagalog and Malay shared a common ancestor. Maybe that's why we shared some words across the archipelago.
Growing up I had an older uncle who my dad called “Mang Victor”. It seemed to me at the time like the ultimate sign of respect
This is awesome!! I wish I could just hang put with him and my friends. He'd have us crying. Naturally funny!!
Glad I found Jo Koy on UA-cam. I like him. Very funny.
When he acts like he's going to cry!! That is so funny!!
I have a friend named Vicente Leobruhildo Chavez.
We all called him Jojo.
My dad is using the same nickname and his name is Hanzel. I dont even know where the nickname came from 🤣🤣🤣
Excuse me how!?
@@diosdehuecomundo that's how it is in the Philippines. My name's Aniceto but people call me Anuk.
I still cant get over this punch line. Effn hilarious😂😂😂
I had a school mate nicknamed Jokoy, his real name is Ralph...
Even there is humour in getting his name.. Jo Koy is just hillarious.
I just LOVE 🩵 Jo Ko! 1 of my favs!!!! 😂😁 He's earned everything he's received thus far 👏🏼 Continued blessings 🙏🏼
Aunt Evelyn : "Jo Ko!!! Hoy! Eat!!!"
"My Jo!! Hey!! Eat!!"
My name is Samantha but my dad always called me “chinga su madre”. I feel so special 🤣🤷🏽♀️
The hell lol
I can relate and I have a similar story too as I'm sure a lot of other Filipinos do as well.
It did make me cry too. 😂
Awww~~~That is the sweetest nickname!
Awww. That's so precious!
