One of my favorite memories with my dad was us sitting in the garage with our tv screwed into the corner with a makeshift antenna, tornado warning flickering on the tv. We’re just watching the green sky, weird ass clouds, hail, crazy wind and waving to the old couple doing the same thing across the street lol.
My dad debated going inside when a big ass tree in the front yard cracked and fell, blocking the street, but we didn’t go inside until my Brazilian mom (who hated that we did this in the first place) saw a funnel cloud starting and came out yelling...
It didn’t even touch down! We could’ve stayed lol.

I used to live in Georgia and moved to Kentucky before I moved back to California again, and dhang those tornado alarm scares the heck out of me. They are super loud for the whole town to hear. And it is to be taken seriously because the clouds are really black and thick as heck. However, it seems like most people who are so used to it are so prepared of what to do or probably know where to hide. I would panic and lay blanket on the tub so me and my son can hide in it. What's difficult for me at that time when in Georgia was I was almost due to give birth and my stomach was so huge that I literally would take the whole tub. Luckily my oldest son was only 5 then and he can just squeeze in. We rented a house off post with just one tub. My ex hubby at that time was in Iraq so it was just me and my son. So it was really scary for me. I felt the same thing when in Kentucky. When me and my kids moved back to Cali, I have this feeling of relief not hearing the alarm /siren and not having to see those scary black clouds in the sky. It looked creepy in person.

I came from NY to KS and will honestly say every time the sky gets black I would tell everyone back home I love them lol Nobody told me they do checks every week either so the first time the warning went off and the sky was blue and sunny I was alone and didn't know what I needed to do lol. Can say though the first tornado that I went through I was starting to panick and turned to pick up my 2 yr old granddaughter and the panic stopped in its tracks and I picked her up and went into our shelter calmly to not make her cry. Scary af.. the 2nd one I was alone at a different house and had nowhere to hide. Tried under the stairs in the garage and the suction coming thru between the doors pulled the door open like the hulk. I just stood there and watched it thru the windows. I was fortunate to come out ok and see the 100 yr old huge trees pulled out by the roots across the road. The barns around my house were gone. My property 200 yards from the road had just branches on the ground. I always cry to see devastation for others. We lost power and those guys showed up in their yellow t-shirts like 50 minions and worked their asses off for almost 24 hrs straight to get it back on for us. Be grateful for those MEN that help keep our society working.

Jo I'm sitting here in Nebraska cracking up. I've lived my whole life in Kansas and Nebraska tornado Central and you know you're so spot on because when did sirens go up we're so used to it we just go to bed you know we just say screw it we might look out the window if it sounds noisy or winds blowing a little more otherwise we're just going to bed there's probably been one or two times in 7 years I actually went to the basement. You go down in the basement this shit's going to come down on top of you anyway so you take your choice. My sister lived in emporia Kansas when it hit in the seventies and she was in an apartment behind a mall on the top floor and she grabbed her baby and got down the steps on the main floor in a closet and when the storm was over which she said sounded like a freight train coming through all that was left of her apartment was the toilet so I say just go to the toilet and I'm saying LOL A lot of people around here don't have basements anymore they just have safety rooms and they're usually the bathroom. If you never seen distraction from a tornado you've never lived it does the most freaky crap you've ever seen it it can take a triple semi and turn it over like a little Tonka toy and then it can just leave a sunroof in a Yugo car like I had a 1989 and Wichita Kansas all my windows were beat out of that car and it looked like somebody took a sledgehammer to it but the sunroof was undamaged and it had just popped it open. Thing you don't want to do is be on the highway or an open factory like those poor people in Kentucky because all that will just come on down on you what you want to do is get a helmet because that stuff is going to impale your head it takes those little sticks and it just beats them into stuff you'll see sticks impaled and stuff that you never knew could be impaled and then you'll see a piece of paper that wasn't even touched crazy crazy wind man it's not like a landslide or a wildfire you just know it's going to come on down when it's ready you don't get prepared like a wildfire or something like that it's interesting but after a while you just become like the guy that was with you now it's not going to come here I've lived in this town since 1963 and it ain't came here yet so you know you get kind of used to those sirens. When I lived in Wichita Kansas 1989 now it did come there it came there four times and one day every time it would leave it will come back from a different part of the town that came from the south that came from the west and came back from the East it was crazy that day and when I emerged from the basement from my neighbor's house cuz I lived in an upstairs apartment they came and got me the sidewalks were actually on fire in the cracks because of all the heat and then the ice that hit it it was crazy stuff man weird weird stuff you don't want to be there if you're from California LOL.

As a lifelong Californian who has worked with many people from elsewhere (covers the rest of the US) it cracks me up to see the differences in how people handle earthquakes. If you’re in mixed company and the bldg starts to shake Californians are calculating the size of the quake ( nahhh 4.1 at most). Is it a roller or a jolt etc ! Sometimes it’s just a big truck driving by. I know several people that left California after their first quake! Now if I were in the path of a tornado, I’d be trying to dig a basement with my fingernails!! 🌪 🌪

I grew up in Oklahoma, tornado Alley, and his impression of the siren is SPOT ON 🤣🤣. Although the Kentucky guy was probably right. In OK we didn't even get the siren in a warning, it was only if one was spotted on the ground directly near you. We had the weather channel on but didn't really get concerned in a warning unless we heard the cat, then it was probably time to take shelter.
Now I live in CO wherever they maybe get them a few miles west of I-25 but my husband and I get such a kick out of people. "We're sheltering in the basement for this tornado watch". No no no, you go out and WATCH until the siren goes off.
Been here 18 years and that's the first question I get asked when I say I'm from Oklahoma "have you ever been in a tornado?!!". "Have I ever been in the funnel cloud?". No, but EVERYONE from Oklahoma has been "in" a tornado according to CO standards. We know what that cat sounds like, we've heard it all our lives 😂

It missed them though. Luckily. Where I'm at, in the middle of the country, more north, there were strong winds, but no tornado as far as I know. The wifi was having trouble, too, but I don't know if that was the winds or just a car, possibly, hitting a pole around my home. I didn't see for sure though. Just what it sounded like. To me, it sounded like hundreds of trains coming your way.
Of course, by the time you hear it, you may not have much time to get away and into an underground shelter- UNLESS you're already prepared.

I lived in Okinawa Japan for most of my life and Kansas for the past 30 years. I'll take a tornado over an earthquake any day hands down! Earthquakes are so scary!! Especially if the ground splits open! At least you can get to a basement and be safe in a tornado. I, like you after moving to Kansas 30 years ago experience my first tornado. The siren thing is spot on!! 😂😂😂 I was wondering the same thing... It was SO LOUD and I was like WTF is that??! Lol!! I learned VERY quickly and was very lucky cause the "dark cloud" I was facing at the intersection WAS THE FREAKING TORNADO!! I drove 100 MPH home to get to safety! Thankfully? I was only a mile away from home! You're so awesome!! We love you!! 💞

A couple of years ago we had an earthquake here in Tulsa Oklahoma a 5.8.
I hadn't experienced one before. So it didn't occur to me at first that it was an earthquake. I honestly to God thought a huge jetliner was about to crash into my apartment building.
Admittedly I'd just gotten up & it's too early to think right then.
After about 20 seconds I realized it was probably an earthquake & moved to a doorway. Then I had to go get my cat from the living room a few feet away because she was scared & crying out.
So I ended up standing in a doorway holding one cat & the other at my feet wondering just why we're getting a damn earthquake in tornado alley.

Lol. I live in Edmond, OK, and I used to work at Walmart. A newlywed couple had come by to pick up their site-to-store merch, and the tornado siren went off. So apparently they're from Alberta and had moved to Oklahoma because the wife had a pretty good job opportunity. So they hear the sirens going off and the husband says, "What's that siren mean?" I just casually say that there's a tornado warning in effect. "So does the siren mean there's a tornado in the area?" "Uhhh, yeah, it's possible." And the wife freaks. "Well do we need to get to some shelter or something???" Again, I'm all calm, "I guess you can if you want. If you live here in Edmond you should be fine. There hasn't been one to hit us since '86. Just be glad you don't live in Moore." They were so panicked and couldn't figure out why I was so nonchalant about it lol.
